1. Near the beginning of his sermon, Andy talked about the essential nature of setting in any story, and how our stories are inherently linked with their setting and context. Think a little bit about the stories of your own life that are either prominent right now or have been in the story arc of your life so far. Share a bit about the stories that come to mind and the ways in which the setting and context of the moment are/were crucial to the overall shape of the story. 2. Andy shared what he called a “mini sermon” in the middle of his sermon. That mini sermon was this: small is often the way of God. Spend some time reflecting on this statement. How does it strike you? In what was have you seen its truth (or not!) in your own life over time? How does reflection on this idea and its truthfulness affect you in this moment? How can you take this idea and apply its wisdom in the challenging and painful places in your own life today? 3. Andy reminded us that “Jesus wasn't born into a sentimental and idealized version of life.”He went on to say, “the story of Bethlehem points us to the true essence of the Gospel! The ash heap of sorrow and grief can be turned into the birthplace of the Bread of Life.” What does it communicate to you to remember that Jesus did indeed come into a very real and messy version of reality? How does that thought make you feel? Now reflect on the idea of the ash heap becoming a birth place for the Bread of Life. Have you seen this truth in your own life? What do you think it means for the bread of Life to be born into the ash heaps and places of sorrow in your life? What does it look like? Is it possible to see that dawning of new life take place as it occurs, or only in retrospect? Would it be possible to miss it altogether? How might one recognize it?
Boys in princess coats, women Uhauling off to Bethleham together, men making out in fields in the dead of night - there's a lot of really gay stuff happening in the Bible. After generations of straightwashing, let's celebrate the queers of scripture and usher them back out of this closet!

Today we have a special show for you. Christmas is in a few days, and we thought what a great way to celebrate by bringing someone on who specializes in Israel and leads trips or pilgrimages through the Holy Land and talk about the little town of Bethlehem. I invited my friend Brain Haynes on the show today to help me unpack some of the really neat aspects of Bethlehem and the importance of why God chose this location for the Prince of Peace, God's One and Only Son, to be born here. Brian Haynes serves as lead pastor of Bay Area Church and Christian School in League City, Texas. He graduated from Baylor University, Southwestern Seminary, and Liberty Theological Seminary, where he earned a D.Min for his work in discipleship and family ministry. Pastor Brian is an author and influencer having written Relentless Parenting: The Crucial Pursuit of Your Teen's Heart (co-authored by his wife Angela), Shift: What it Takes to Finally Reach Families Today, and The Legacy Path: Discover Intentional Spiritual Parenting. He is a contributing author for Recalibrate: A New Measure for Family Ministry and Family Ministry and the Church. In this episode we dig into why Yeshua was born in Bethleham and find even more evidence even in rabbinical sources about this event and what it means for him to be born in these fields of bethleham. Religion Today host Martin Tanner explains the "Wise Men" or "Magi" (the root word for magician" in English may have been Zoroastrian Priests traveling from the east, near or at Babylon. The Star of Bethleham could have been a comet, a super-nova or perhaps a super-natural event. Jesus was likely born in 4 BC or earlier because King Harod, who spoke with the Magi, died in 4 BC. These and other details of the traditional Christmas Story of the Birth of our Savior are described in this episode of Religion Today. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Advent week 2: Ray looks at Bethlehem and Faith. We have been hearing a lot from the British politicians of their promises and manifestos in the run up to election day this Thursday. Ray likens this to Jesus' manifesto when he reads the prophecy in Isaiah. Ray then delves into the history, culture and customs of the day explaining the significance of Bethleham, the stables and manger and the lack of room at the inn and a whole lot more. Enjoy the message. Passages: Luke 4:16-19, Psalm 146:3-10, Micah 5:2,4-5a, Luke 2:1-7

We’re continuing our series on Hope with Joseph’s story. The Bible doesn’t say much about Jesus’ earthly father, but what we do know paints a picture of a man who had hope when things weren’t looking so good in Bethleham.
Kelly talks to Chalis Montgomery, Congressional candidate in the Georgia 10th District, about her daughter's chronic illness and her husband's loss of his health insurance, about the moral imperative of the Poor People's Campaign, about the beauty and diversity of the 10th district, and about what it means to Fight Like a Mother.

In the message "1973", Pastor Jerry discusses the correlation between the Old Testament story of Moses, the New Testament story of Jesus, and a correlation with today, while exposing the attempt of Satan to silence a God-Seeking generation and hinder the impact of the Kingdom. Threatened by an explosion of the Hebrew population Pharaoh of Egypt put out an order, in approximately 1446 BC, that ALL the Hebrew male babies be killed. In approximately 4 BC King Herod put out a similar kill order to kill all boys near Bethleham, in an effort to snuff out the life of the new born King Jesus. In 1973 the Supreme Court of the US made a ruling that would allowed for the similar killing of babies in our country in this generation. This time it’s the preborn... and this time it was both boys and girls. If we look at history, we will see that Satan has used this tactic more than once. Through all of this, God has spared you and this generation. Satan has feared this generation, just as he feared the generation of Moses and of Christ. God has called you! Show the Lord you are NOT ASHAMED!!
Yolande Knell soaks up the atmosphere in Bethlehem's Manger Square as Christians worldwide prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Reporter Vishva Samani talks to women sleeping rough in Manchester and asks why their numbers are increasing. A Muslim, a Jewish and a Hindu family each describe what they get up to on the 25th December. Two years ago, the Butrus family fled persecution Iraq and Syria because of their Christian faith. As they prepare to celebrate their second Christmas in this country, they tell Edward Stourton about their flight and their hopes for the future. In recent years, Islamic extremist such as ISIS and Boko Haram have attacked Christians in the Middle East and Africa but there is growing concern for Christian communities in India, Pakistan and China too. John Pontifex from Aid to the Church in Need tells Edward why persecution against Christians is on the rise. Since 1983, the choir of King's College Cambridge has performed a new carol at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. This year's is by Welsh composer Huw Watkins, Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, we get a sneak preview. In the early years of the 20th century, 'the wizardry of Mr Marconi' enabled the BBC to celebrate a very British sort of Christmas with the rest of the world. To take a look at those first festive offerings from Auntie Beeb, Edward is joined by Paul Kerensa, author of a new book called 'Hark! The Biography of Christmas'. Sarah Mullally has just been appointed to the one of the top jobs in the Church of England - she is going to be the next Bishop of London. She talks about the challenges ahead and how her background in nursing will impact on her new role. Producers: Helen Lee Lissa Cook Series Producer: Amanda Hancox.

Herod or Jesus Luke asks: Who is your savior Caesar or Jesus Luke 2:34-35 Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
