We have always found this song incredibly moving, due in no small part to memories of the place and time when we played it in public for the first time.It was seven years ago at our favorite Charleston, WV, venue — Taylor Books — on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017. Honestly, had the gig not already been booked for months in advance, we probably would not have wanted to perform that evening. That's because for us — and for most of the people in the audience that night — images from the previous 24 hours were too fresh, too raw: hateful scenes of white supremacists and neo-Nazis rioting in the streets of the sweet, beautiful town of Charlottesville, Va. In that context, the poignant lyrics we sang at the show took on an even greater resonance. Chris Stapleton's SongSet in the Civil War, Chris Stapleton's haunting “Can You Run?” tells the story of a young slave pleading with his lover to join him for a dangerous dash to the Union line so that he can fight alongside “the freedom line of the Lincoln soldiers.” At one point in the song, he tells her: You know I hate to ask so late But the moment's finally come, And there won't be time to change your mind. Can you run?We still remember tears in the eyes of two old friends at the front table as they listened to our rendering of the song that Stapleton created at the very beginning of his rich and prolific career.About the ComposerOur region is so proud of Chris Stapleton. The 46-year-old Lexington, Ky., native grew up not far from us in the tiny Johnson County town of Staffordsville in Eastern Kentucky. To date, Chris has won 10 Grammys, 11 Academy of Country Music Awards and 15 Country Music Association Awards. Besides that, he also has been named the ACM's Artist-Songwriter of the Decade, and last year Rolling Stone magazine included Stapleton among the “200 Greatest Singers of All Time.”Stapleton had written and/or co-written nearly 200 songs. He has six No. 1 country songs to his credit, including Kenny Chesney's “Never Wanted Nothing More,” Josh Turner's “Your Man,” George Strait's “Love's Gonna Make It Alright” and Luke Bryan's “Drink a Beer.” His work has appeared on albums by Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift and so many others. As noted, “Can You Run?” emerged in the early days of Stapleton's career, appearing in 2010 on Reckless, the second album of The SteelDrivers, the Nashville-based band in which he was the lead singer. Our Take on the TuneOur Randy Hamilton brought us this song about seven years ago. Lately it's been back in the repertoire, with Danny Cox doing double duty, singing harmony to Randy's great lead vocal and trading solos with Sam St. Clair, all framed by Jack Nuckols' tasteful drumming and Charlie Bowen's little bit of banjo. Take a listen. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Nov. 9 at 6:50 a.m. CT: Republican presidential candidates used the third debate of the GOP primary campaign to show their support for Israel and display at least some willingness to criticize Donald Trump, the front-runner in the race. Some of the most notable criticism of Trump came from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Meanwhile, Trump's debate counterprogramming tour continued in South Florida before a friendly crowd about a half-hour's drive from where his rivals gathered. Negotiations are being held for a three-day humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza in exchange for the release of about a dozen hostages held by Hamas. That is according to two officials from Egypt, one from the United Nations and a Western diplomat. They were speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic efforts. The Israel-Hamas war, now in its second month, was triggered by the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel. WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly half of Democrats disapprove of how President Joe Biden is handling the Israel-Hamas conflict. That's according to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll. Taken over five days in November, the poll shows a deep divide in the Democratic Party over the war. The poll found 50% of Democrats approve of how Biden has navigated the conflict while 46% disapprove. The two groups diverge substantially in their views of U.S. support for Israel. The war could complicate Biden's reelection effort. He faces having to balance factions of his party with very different views on the conflict and who is ultimately responsible. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood's actors union has reached a deal with studios to end its strike. The contract agreement reached Wednesday must still be approved by the union's board and its members, but the leadership said actors will be allowed to return to work starting Thursday. They can rejoin writers, whose own long strike ended in late September. For the first times since spring, all the parts of Hollywood production will be back in action. The actors chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland tells The Associated Press that they reached a deal that was worth the cost on issues including pay and the use of artificial intelligence in production. Lainey Wilson took home five trophies including entertainer of the year at the Country Music Association Awards. The 31-year-old Louisiana singer also won album of the year and female vocalist of the year at the Wednesday night ceremony at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Rapper-turned-singer Jelly Roll both opened and closed the show with performances, and was named best new artist during the ceremony. Luke Combs won single of the year for his cover of Tracy Chapman's “Fast Car,” and Chapman won song of the year for the tune, 35 years after she wrote it. The 12 months ending in October were the hottest ever recorded on Earth and likely the planet's hottest 12-month period ever recorded, according to a report from the nonprofit science research group Climate Central. The report said burning gasoline, coal and natural gas along with other human activities are to blame for the unnatural warming. The Celtics, Knicks and Nuggets are among the NBA's big winners, the Panthers beat the Capitals in one of the NHL's three games and the Angels have a new manager. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — Voters have thrown their support behind abortion rights in races in Ohio, Virginia and elsewhere. And now, Democrats look to springboard off those wins by using the issue to drive turnout and shape next year's races for the White House, Congress and other elections. Ohio sent the clearest sign of the issue's importance more than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court ended the nationwide right to abortion. Calls continue for a humanitarian pause in the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. NEW YORK (AP) — Ivanka Trump is testifying that she had no role in her father's personal financial statements — the documents central to the civil fraud trial that could reshape former President Donald Trump's family business. Trump's elder daughter took the witness stand Wednesday at the New York trial. Her father and her brothers Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump testified earlier. Ivanka Trump has been in her father's inner circle in both business and politics. But unlike him and her brothers, she was dismissed as a defendant in the New York attorney general's lawsuit. It alleges that Donald Trump's asset values were fraudulently pumped up for years on financial statements that helped him get loans and insurance. He and other defendants deny wrongdoing. WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden's attorney says subpoenas issued by House Republicans to members of President Joe Biden's family are a “political stunt." Wednesday's subpoenas are the most aggressive step yet by Republicans in an impeachment inquiry bitterly opposed by Democrats. The move by House Oversight Committee chair James Comer to subpoena the Democratic president's son Hunter and brother James comes as Republicans look to gain ground in their nearly yearlong investigation. The Republicans have thus far failed to uncover evidence directly implicating the president in any wrongdoing. The White House and the family's lawyers say the investigation has been a political ploy but Hunter's attorney indicated that he could be inclined to appear “at the right time.” HOUSTON (AP) — A fire at a chemical plant in rural Texas had sent a massive plume of black smoke into the sky Wednesday morning but was contained by the afternoon. Officials ordered residents around Shepherd, Texas, to take shelter. They also closed an adjacent highway that connects the community to Livingston. Livingston and Shepherd are northeast of Houston. Officials say the explosion took place at Sound Resource Solutions and one employee suffered minor burns but was in stable condition. They say the fire was contained Wednesday afternoon. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said the plume could be heading toward the nearby Livingston area. BRUSSELS (AP) — Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia are moving forward in their quests to join the European Union. But countries in the volatile Balkans that have waited years longer to become members appeared to slip back in the queue. The European Commission recommended Wednesday in a series of reports that war-ravaged Ukraine should be permitted to open membership talks soon once it's addressed some shortfalls. Neighboring Moldova was told the same thing. Georgia was granted official status as a candidate to join. The recommendations provide technical guidance to the 27 EU member states about how much progress countries have made in aligning their laws and standards with those of the bloc. EU leaders will weigh those recommendations on Dec. 14-15. WASHINGTON (AP) — Four California men linked to the “Three Percenters” militia movement have been convicted on charges including conspiracy and obstruction for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Erik Scott Warner, Felipe Antonio Martinez, Derek Kinnison, and Ronald Mele were found guilty on Tuesday after a trial in Washington's federal court. Attorneys for Martinez and Warner declined to comment, and emails seeking comment were sent to an attorney for Mele. Kinnison's lawyer said he is disappointed with the verdict and they are considering all available legal options. FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Adidas says it may write off the remaining 300 million euros ($320 million) worth of Yeezy shoes left unsold after it cut ties with rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. The company said Wednesday that it will decide in the coming weeks whether to sell them next year to generate more donations to groups fighting antisemitism. The shoe and sports clothing company, which cut ties with Ye in October 2022 after he made antisemitic remarks online, has sold 750 million euros worth of the shoes in two stages earlier this year through Adidas smartphone apps and its website. Part of the profits went to groups like the Anti-Defamation League. TOKYO (AP) — Nintendo is developing a live-action film based on its hit video game “The Legend of Zelda.” The Japanese maker behind the Super Mario franchise said Wednesday said it's financing the movie with Sony Pictures Entertainment. It will be directed by Wes Ball, the American director of the upcoming “Planet of the Apes” film. It's being co-produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., which is behind the live-action Spider-Man films and headed by Avi Arad. The move highlights Nintendo's strategy to leverage various aspects of its business, including theme parks and merchandising to boost machine and software sales, and vice versa. DETROIT (AP) — GM's Cruise autonomous vehicle unit is recalling all 950 of its cars to update its software after one dragged a pedestrian to the side of a San Francisco street last month. The company says in documents posted by U.S. safety regulators Wednesday that with the updated software, Cruise vehicles will remain stationary in similar cases. The Oct. 2 crash prompted Cruise to suspend driverless operations nationwide after California regulators found its cars were a safety hazard. The California Department of Motor Vehicles revoked the license for Cruise, which was transporting passengers without human drivers throughout San Francisco. In the crash, a human-driven vehicle hit a pedestrian, pushing them in front of a Cruise autonomous vehicle. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. #932 - Josh Kear The Josh Kear Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? One of the things we like most about The Paul Leslie Hour is that we can uncover something that went out over the radio years ago and listen to it in the here… and now. People just like you listen to these interviews totally in the present. The present we're in. We're going to give this interview with Grammy award-winning songwriter Josh Kear a spin. Back in 2007, three songs co-written by Kear entered the country charts: “That's How They Do It in Dixie” by Hank Williams, Jr., “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood and “Bama Breeze” by Jimmy Buffett. (Josh wrote the Buffett track with Chris Tompkins and Mark Irwin) The same year “Before He Cheats” won the Single of the Year Award at the Country Music Association Awards. A few months later, it won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. It's one of the longest-charting hits in Billboard history. Josh Kear did this interview with Paul Edward Leslie to talk about some of his famous songs and also about “Blue Pearl Paradise,” his somewhat underground album of original island songs. Josh is such a nice guy he sent us the demo of “Bama Breeze” to play and we'll all listen to that together. Before you forget, remember to subscribe to Paul Leslie's YouTube channel and also like this video and leave a comment. You won't want to miss any of our interviews or reviews so ring that bell. Now let's hear from our special guest Josh Kear. Whatdya say? It's time we listened. Together.

With so much drama in the LBC, it's only right that we drop a dope NFT. Recording artists Snoop Dogg and Billy Ray Cyrus have teamed up to release a new smash single, “A Hard Working Man.” The hip hop-country mashup, produced by the legendary Avila Brothers, will debut on April 2 during Grammy weekend in Las Vegas. Cyrus' 2019 hit remix of “Old Town Road” with rapper Lil Nas X made history by going 16x multi-platinum in the United States. Asked about his genre-bending approach to music, Cyrus replied, “My philosophy to making music is no limitations. No rules, no limits, no preconceived notions. Don't try to think inside the box or outside the box, just think like there is no box.” Adding to the excitement of the song's debut, metaverse entertainment company Animal Concerts is hard at work (pun intended) developing a new 50,000-piece nonfungible token (NFT) drop to accompany the single. Cointelegraph is producing the artwork for this massive collection, which will be featured on Crypto.com NFT. The drop also features an exciting array of redeemables for music fans, from concert tickets and backstage passes to merch and free tickets to Animal Concerts' “Meta-Concerts.” Animal Concerts recently burst onto the scene with a host of high-profile live concerts featuring some of the hottest names in music, from Alicia Keys and Future to Meek Mill. Bridging the NFT world, the metaverse and utility for the community, Cointelegraph and Animal Concerts will be expanding their collaboration beyond this drop. In the coming months, the two will be releasing other high-profile NFT collections, including with beloved celebrity dog Izzy the Frenchie and some of the biggest names in music. Animal Concerts is reinventing the future of concerts. From interactive metaverse shows to immersive live events, Animal Concerts enables established and emerging artists to deliver amazing next-generation fan experiences. Stay up to date with all upcoming announcements, launches and Meta-Concerts by following Animal Concerts on its social platforms. Tom's next guest is an emerging star in the world of country music, and a native daughter of Baltimore. Midday first checked in with Brittany Spencerin an interviewlast summer, right before she made her second appearance at the famed Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Since then, much has happened in her career. After years of singing back-up for other artists, she is now headlining her own tour. She'll be playing at The 8X10 Club in Baltimore Sunday night. And a couple of weeks ago, she was featured on the Country Music Association Awards broadcast singing with two other Black country artists, Mickey Guyton and Madeline Edwards, in a performance of her hit song, “I Love My Hair.” Brittney Spencer joins Tom on Zoom for the second half of this hour. Their conversation was recorded last week, so we're not able to take any calls or comments. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

1. During last week's episode of Talking Through The Medias, The Country Music Association Awards aired without a few key performers who tested positive for COVID. CMA announced it would be moving forward with an in-person event at Nashville’s Music City Center. the CMA found itself in hot water after making a statement encouraging artists to remain apolitical amid the election. “It’s been a year, y’all. But for three hours this is a no-drama zone,” the group tweeted on November 4. Country journalists criticized the statement, including singer-songwriter Margo Price, who tweeted, “Once again, the CMA’s are censoring/whitewashing their show but who’s surprised? anyone still participating is a socially unconscious pawn. artists pander woke authenticity when it benefits them and then sits in silence as they collect their plastic trophies.” The CMA later backtracked with an apology, tweeting, “While our intentions with our social campaign were to communicate to fans that the show will offer a brief escape, we recognize that our phrasing did not convey that message”. 2. From Variety Fair, Taylor Swift Says Scooter Braun Is Trying to “Silence Her Forever,” But Promises She Still Has “Plenty of Surprises in Store”. Taylor Swift gave an update about the ongoing legal process of buying back her master recordings from Scooter Braun on Monday night but the opportunity to repurchase her music is not looking likely. After the news broke, the pop star tweeted out an open letter, explaining that while her team “attempted to enter into negotiations with Scooter Braun” his team allegedly demanded that she first sign an NDA stating she “would never say another word about Scooter Braun unless it was positive. Despite all these legal complications, Swift hasn't given up hope just yet. A representative for Scooter Braun was not immediately available for comment. 3. From The Vulture, it’s been discovered that the country icon Dolly Parton, was one of the major funders for Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine, which has proved to be nearly 95 percent effective in early data. Parton confirmed, ever so humbly, that she indeed made the donation through her research fund. “I’m just happy that anything I do can help somebody else,” she said. “When I donated the money to the COVID fund, I just wanted it to do good, and evidently it is. Let’s just hope we find a cure real soon.”

Ticketmaster is already planning for what life is going to be like after we get a vaccine for COVID-19 and how that is going to affect concert goers. Billboard Magazine is reporting that they are going to have a feature you can pull up on your phone to show that you are vaccinated or whether you have tested negative for the coronavirus within 24 to 72 hours of the show. The plan came after the news broke that Pfizer has developed a vaccine that is reportedly 90% effective at preventing the coronavirus. The Country Music Association Awards took place last night and fans were quick to notice that attendees were not seen social distancing throughout the show and few seemed to be wearing masks. Leading up to the award show there were a large number of musical guests that dropped out from appearing at the show. Cardi B has responded to accusations of cultural appropriation for a photo she was in promoting her Reebok collaboration. The photo shows Cardi who was photoshopped to resemble the Hindu goddess Durga while also holding a sneaker for the cover of Footwear News. It has since been removed from the publication's instagram. Cardi b captioned a video posted to her Instagram saying “I didn't mean to offend or disrespect anybody's culture. I can't change the past but I'll be more cautious in the future.” She then explained that the creative team told her the goddess represents strength, femininity and liberation, and that is something she loves which made her want to do it. Britney Spears has been trying to have her father removed as her main conservator. Britney has once again been denied his removal and her lawyer is now saying that she is not going to perform or create music moving forward since that will only benefit her father more, and put more money in his pocket. Her lawyer also said that Britney is scared of her father which solidifies the #FreeBritney concerns that so many of her fans have. It's time for the Country Music Association Awards hosted by Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker on November 11th. On this "RandumBonus", B.C. and his lovely wife J.C. will talk about this year's nominees (which are ACTUALLY good choices), the obvious omission (along with some that are glaring), and we will give our predictions for each award. Foy's second guest is four time Grammy winner and 2019 ACM Entertainer of the year Keith Urban. He's the only male Country artist to simultaneously top the charts in the USA, Canada, and Australia, and has had 24 #1 songs. Keith has spent the better part of his life harnessing a deep-seated passion for music—it's plot of his life story, with all its twists and turns. Urban's past collaborations include Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, John Mayer, Julia Michaels, Justin Timberlake, Dzeko, Miranda Lambert, Nile Rodgers, Post Malone, Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones and Vince Gill. But he's never done anything quite like this podcast with Foy Vance, where they touch on topics all over the map. Keith starts out with introducing his precious toy poodle and the chat flows organically from there. He tells Foy about an idol keeping his cool when guitars go missing on tour, and asserts that any version of “Crazy” is a good song. Foy and Keith bat back and forth about vegemite and promite and Keith gives a reading rec—These Truths by Jill Lepore. He spins eternal truths about going out laughing and communing with the dead. Together, the two ask: where would we be without music? Keith's quarantine has already been a busy one: he performed Steve Winwood's “Higher Love” for Lady Gaga's One World: Together at Home broadcast, and he was the first artist to hold a COVID-19 first responder concert at a drive-in movie theater. In the previous life, his last two albums garnered five #1 songs, including “Blue Ain't Your Color,” which won Best Single at the 2017 CMA Awards and Favorite Country Song at the American Music Awards. Besides four Grammy Awards, Keith has won thirteen Country Music Association Awards, fifteen Academy of Country Music Awards, four People's Choice Awards and four American Music Awards. He is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry. But Urban is far more than a musician. He's long supported numerous charities. His “All For The Hall” benefit concerts for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum© have raised over $4.2 million. He is the first Ambassador of the CMA Foundation, an advisory board member at the St. Jude's Children's Hospital and is a longtime supporter of The Mr. Holland's Opus Fund and The Grammy Foundation. Keith Urban's 10th studio album, THE SPEED OF NOW came out on September 14th and is available from wherever you purchase music. This episode was recorded in July 2020. Information on this episode's guest: From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genre-defining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels ( https://www.charliedaniels.com/bio ). An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 81, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need. Raised among the longleaf pines of North Carolina, Charlie began his career playing bluegrass music with the Misty Mountain Boys. After moving to Nashville in 1967, he began making a name for himself as a songwriter, session musician and producer. Elvis Presley recorded a tune Charlie co-wrote titled “It Hurts Me,” which was released on the flip side of “Kissin’ Cousins.” He played on such landmark albums as Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline and tried his hand at producing on the Youngbloods’ Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind. His own unique voice as an artist emerged as Charlie recorded his self-titled solo album in 1970 for Capitol Records. Two years later he formed the Charlie Daniels Band and the group scored its first hit with the top ten “Uneasy Rider.” Since then the CDB has populated radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” “In America,” “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1979 as well as single of the year at the Country Music Association Awards. Hurdl is bridging the gap between artist and audience using wearable technology and a healthy amount of innovation. Ultimately they are upgrading experiences in the multi-billion dollar live event space which hasn’t seen a change in more than 30 years. In November Hurdl introduced wearable tech to the live music scene and even became the star of the show at the Country Music Association Awards. Could technology now engage large audiences to create new relationships and personalized euphoric experiences? The PIXL LED wearable turns fans into interactive event experiences while its patented software provides clients and brand partners a new 1:1 communication network with all attendees for direct, real-time engagement to increase pre-, during and post-event revenue. Hurdl was one of 11 startups chosen from more than 30,000 applicants worldwide to work in close collaboration with TechStars Music which many of you might remember from episode 204. "We’re proudly pioneering a new, direct channel for our clients to include and engage their entire audience in a way that I was never able as an artist manager for 12 years,” said Betsy McHugh, Hurdl founder Betsy has lived and breathed the live music scene having worked with John Mayer and Bon Jovi, as well as in management roles for artists including Keith Urban and Hunter Hayes. I'm quite excited about how Hurdl is bridging the gap between artist and audience while being both accessible and affordable.

I just thank God I make a living at what I enjoy doing.”-2- Whether performing in the hit 80s movie Urban Cowboy, singing on Easter Sunday at his local church or leading an all-star cast at one of his famed Volunteer Jams, Charlie just exudes joy whenever he steps on stage and he's always been quick to provide a platform for other artists to shine. In 1974 he invited some friends to join him at Nashville's War Memorial Auditorium for an all-star concert he dubbed The Volunteer Jam. The event continued for years and was broadcast in the U.S. and internationally. Over the years, the Jam featured a diverse line up that included Willie Nelson, Ted Nugent, Roy Acuff, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Crystal Gayle, James Brown, Emmylou Harris, Amy Grant, George Thorogood, Kris Kristofferson, Little Richard, Tammy Wynette, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, B. B. King and the Allman Brothers. As diverse as his live shows have always been, his discography has also reflected Charlie's love of multiple genres. In 1994 he released his first Christian album, The Door, on Sparrow Records. The album won the Gospel Music Association's Dove Award for Best Country Album and “Two Out of Three” was named video of the year by the Christian Country Music Association. In 1997, Sony Wonder released Charlie's first children's album, “By The Light of The Moon: Campfire Songs and Cowboy Tunes'. An astute businessman as well as talented musician, Charlie launched Blue Hat Records in 1997 with his longtime personal manager David Corlew. Over the past 15 years, the label has released such memorable albums as Blues Hat, Tailgate Party, Road Dogs, Fiddle Fire: 25 Years of the Charlie Daniels Band and his first bluegrass album 2005's Songs From the Longleaf Pines and 2007's album Deuces, featuring duets with Brad Paisley, Gretchen Wilson, Bonnie Bramlett, Travis Tritt, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill,...
