Next Level Soul with Alex Ferrari: A Spirituality & Personal Growth Podcast
In a world teeming with noise and distraction, sometimes it takes a quiet heart to make the loudest impact. On today's episode, we welcome Maggie Doyne, a soul who turned the simplicity of babysitting money into a beacon of hope in Nepal. Her journey from suburban New Jersey to the remote villages of Nepal is nothing short of miraculous, a modern tale of compassion that evokes the spirit of Mother Teresa.Maggie's path was not one mapped out by ambition but by a profound inner calling. As a typical teenager from New Jersey, Maggie questioned the meaning of success and chose to take a gap year to explore the world beyond her suburban bubble. It was in the heart of northeastern India that she encountered the raw realities of life, where refugees and migrants fleeing the Nepalese civil war laid bare the harsh truths of poverty and displacement. It was here, amidst the rubble and chaos, that Maggie met a young girl named Hema, who was breaking rocks for survival. This encounter was the spark that ignited Maggie's mission.Maggie's response to Hema's plight was not a grand plan but a simple, heartfelt act. She enrolled Hema in a local school, recognizing that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. From this small beginning, Maggie's vision grew. She partnered with her co-founder, Top, and with her babysitting savings, they purchased land in Nepal. They built a home, not just any home, but a vibrant, loving sanctuary for children who had lost everything. This home became the foundation of the BlinkNow Foundation, a testament to the power of love and community.Maggie Doyne faced countless challenges on her journey. Navigating cultural barriers, dealing with the harsh realities of child labor, and confronting deep-seated societal norms required resilience and an unwavering spirit. In Nepal, traditions such as Chhaupadi, where menstruating women are banished to cow sheds, posed significant risks to women and girls. Maggie worked tirelessly to address these issues, using empowerment, education, and community engagement to bring about change. Her efforts were not without resistance, but her dedication never wavered. In her words, “You can pray all you want; shit can still happen.” This raw truth underscores the reality that spirituality and good intentions are not shields against the hardships of life. Maggie's story is a powerful reminder that while the path may be fraught with difficulty, the impact of genuine compassion can transform lives. Her work has led to hundreds of children being saved from the streets, given education, and provided with a future full of possibilities.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSThe Power of One: Maggie's journey illustrates that one person's actions, driven by love and compassion, can create ripples of change that transform entire communities.Listening to the Heart: True purpose often emerges when we quiet the noise around us and listen to the deeper callings of our heart. Maggie's decision to take a gap year and explore beyond her comfort zone led her to discover her life's mission.Embracing Resilience: Maggie's story teaches us that resilience and persistence in the face of adversity are crucial. The journey may be difficult, but the rewards of seeing lives transformed are immeasurable. As we reflect on Maggie's incredible journey, we are reminded that change begins with a single step, a single act of kindness. Her story is a beacon of hope, showing us that even in the midst of overwhelming challenges, the human spirit is capable of extraordinary compassion and resilience. Please enjoy my conversation with Maggie Doyne.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Maggie Doyne is an American philanthropist who built a children's home, women's center, and school in Surkhet. She is the founder/CEO of BlinkNow Foundation. She is also the author of Between the Mountain and the Sky: A Mother's Story of Hope and Love.
Maggie Doyne, is founder of the BlinkNow Foundation in Surkhet, Nepal. The story of that organization began in 2005, in northern India. While there and during a cease-fire in the Nepalese Civil War, she met a six year old girl who was barely surviving. She helped pay for her school, and then, using $5,000 she'd saved from babysitting expanded your efforts. Soon funds came from supporters worldwide, she purchased land in Nepal, and in 2007, started The BlinkNow Foundation. This nonprofit now includes a women's center, health clinic, girls' safe house, a Children's Home that is the legal guardian to more than 45 children, and a 400-student school that is the ‘greenest' school in Nepal, In 2013, this school's students took Nepal's District Level Examination for the first time. All students scored within the top 10% nationwide, 50% scored in the top 1% nationwide and the school was ranked first in its region. Maggie has been a Speaker at the Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy, and the Forbes Women's Summit and have received many awards, including the CNN Hero of the Year, as well as the Unsung Hero of Compassion award, presented by the Dalai Lama. But more importantly, in March 2022, she shared your personal story in your book "Between the Mountain and the Sky, A Mother's Story of Love, Loss, Healing and Hope.” Maggie believes in operating at the grassroots level of community, in focusing and promoting sustainability and self-reliance within community, and not least of all, getting down with the truth. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cutting-for-sign/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cutting-for-sign/support

The world today is as complex as ever. With some systems crumbling and others doubling down, navigating meaningful work can be exhausting and can easily lead to burnout. This is just one aspect of my conversation with Maggie Doyne that I loved diving into. I have long admired people (especially women) who do things differently than the status quo. Who have a desire, a passion and a fuel to do something big- and actually follow that calling. It's SO hard friends. SO freaking hard. This is why I was so fueled and inspired by my conversation with my friend Maggie Doyne, Co-Founder and CEO of the BlinkNow Foundation. In this episode we talked about: What it looks like to navigate privilege, radically listen and work through the "white savior compex" How to have scrappy, messy hope in the midst of todays cultural climate Ins and outs of motherhood in all of its shapes and sizes The power of simplicity and getting our basic needs met I loved having Maggie Doyne on the podcast to discuss her highly anticipated debut memoir Between the Mountain and the Sky: A Mother's Story of Hope and Love. As the CEO and co-founder of BlinkNow, a nonprofit dedicated to serving the children of Nepal, Doyne has been globally recognized for her community-based and sustainable initiatives abroad. The book highlights Doyne's inspirational coming of age story spanning over a decade since she journeyed from her comfortable middle-class New Jersey home for the college gap year that forever changed the trajectory of her life. When Doyne first arrived in Surkhet, Nepal the area was just coming out of a civil war that left families in poverty and many children orphaned on the streets. After an unexpected encounter with a Nepali girl breaking rocks in a quarry, Doyne decided to invest her life savings of five thousand dollars to buy a piece of land and open the Kopika Valley Children's Home with a vision to care for, comfort, educate, and empower the children of the community. Alongside BlinkNow co-founder Tope Malla, Doyne has gone on to open a school, health clinic, women's center, and more, and was recognized for her remarkable initiatives as a 2015 CNN Hero of the Year. When Maggie Doyne was 18 she saw a young girl breaking stones to sell in a dried riverbed in Nepal. She was taking a gap year until Hima stopped her in her tracks. All she could think was: “What am I supposed to do? In this moment, in this life? What are we, as a human family, supposed to do and be?” Maggie's initial calling to send Hima to school was the seed of a mission that soon became the BlinkNow Foundation, which now encompasses a thriving children's home, school, women's center, and more. It's also the place where she became a mother to over 50 children and supports the flourishing of hundreds more. Maggie devotes herself to her calling through love —“not in a rose colored glasses kind of way. In a way of: How do we use love as a tool for peace and joint humanity? It is a powerful restitution.” We gain a glimpse into what love makes possible in our conversation about her stunning memoir, Between the Mountain and the Sky.
