We’ve unintentionally breathed in and believed the lie that our worth is based on what we produce. Based on our success, achievements and possessions. We set an end goal, and everything that happens leading up to that goal is merely a means to an end. Eve
The Creating Meaningful Work podcast is an absolute gem that has quickly become my go-to source of inspiration and motivation. It is a podcast filled with intentional conversations that touch on a wide range of topics, from creativity and entrepreneurship to spirituality and self-exploration. Each episode is beautifully crafted, leaving the listener feeling uplifted and ready to take on their own journey of creating meaningful work in their lives.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the diversity of guests that Joanna Waterfall brings to each episode. She has a knack for finding culture makers and disrupters who share their stories and wisdom with authenticity and vulnerability. From entrepreneurs to artists to spiritual leaders, each guest offers a unique perspective that adds depth and richness to the conversations. This variety keeps the podcast fresh and engaging, ensuring there is something for everyone.
Another standout aspect of this podcast is how it counters hustle culture and emphasizes the importance of pausing and reflecting. In a world that often glorifies busyness, Joanna reminds us to slow down, know ourselves, and create meaning in our work and lives. The conversations on this podcast serve as gentle reminders to focus on the journey rather than just the end goal, encouraging listeners to embrace the process and find joy in every step.
If I had to find one drawback of this podcast, it would be the occasional lack of practical tips or actionable advice. While the conversations are always insightful and thought-provoking, there are times when I wish there was more tangible guidance on how to implement some of the concepts discussed. However, this is a minor criticism compared to all the positive aspects this podcast offers.
In conclusion, The Creating Meaningful Work podcast is an absolute must-listen for anyone seeking inspiration and guidance in their pursuit of meaningful work. With its beautiful conversations, diverse lineup of guests, and emphasis on reflection and self-discovery, this podcast has truly become a source of light in my life. I am grateful for Joanna Waterfall's vision and the impact this podcast has had on my own journey of creating meaningful work.

Listen to this episode to hear: • Why Jill has chosen to work for a winery vs. start her own • How you can still live in alignment and do what you love while working for someone else • The strengths of a female-founded, female-led team • Why Jill didn't enjoy being labeled a “female winemaker” for a long time • How Jill has navigated working in a male-dominated industry • Why being a sustainable winery is so much more than the environment (but why that's important too) • The skills Jill fostered that helped her land her dream job as head winemaker at Cambria Wines About Jill: Jill Russell grew up with a love of food and wine while living in the Bay Area and working as a server at a winery in Livermore Valley. She developed a love for the Central Coast where she attended Cal Poly, SanLuis Obispo in their new Wine & Viticulture program. Interested in experiencing winemaking abroad, Jill spent a quarter studying in Adelaide,Australia. After college she had the dream opportunity to make wine in Menetou-Salon, Loire Valley France. With all of her connections and work during college at Tolosa, StephenRoss & Phase 2 Cellars, Jill was drawn back to Santa Barbara County and established her reputation there. She was introduced to Paul Lato, who believed she not only had the skills, but the right energy to help make some of the best wines that the Central Coast had to offer. At Paul Lato Wines, she specialized in wines sourced from prestigious vineyards of the Santa Maria and Santa Rita Hills regions but found herself particularly drawn to the uniquely characteristic vines of Santa Maria Valley. Years later, the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself, and Jill knew it was her destiny to take on the role of winemaker at Cambria Winery, one of the quintessential wineries of Santa Maria Valley. Jill is thrilled to work alongside former Cambria Winemaker and General Manager Denise Shurtleff. Jill lived in San Luis Obispo for more than ten years, and shares a love of the Central Coast with her husband Torrey. They now live in the quaint winemaking town of Los Alamos. Everything in our culture tells us that what you need is "out there". It's beyond you. Outside of you. It's the water we've been swimming in. What if what you wanted wasn't outside of you, but rather already within you- you just had to remember it? I first fell in love with Alison when I saw her dancing unashamedly on IG before we were all really doing that kind of thing lol. Alison at first seems like she's all fun and games, (which she is definetly that) but there's sooo much more to Alison that meets the eye. This woman has gone through it, and opens up so vulnerably about her journey during our conversation. Listen to this episode to hear: • Why you don't need anything outside yourself to embrace your awesome • What Alison learned after her health forced her to take a year and a half offline as an internet entrepreneur • How Alison has learned how to create space in her life to feel joy instead of being crippled by anxiety Buy Alison's book here: https://alisonfaulkner.com/book Follow her on IG here: https://www.instagram.com/thealisonfaulkner/ ABOUT ALISON: Alison Faulkner is a branding and events expert, host of the podcast Awesome with Alison, consultant for Fortune 500 companies, writer, speaker, self-proclaimed nonsense dancer, and CEO of Alison's Brand School, partnering with Microsoft and Alaska Airlines among others. The world today is as complex as ever. With some systems crumbling and others doubling down, navigating meaningful work can be exhausting and can easily lead to burnout. This is just one aspect of my conversation with Maggie Doyne that I loved diving into. I have long admired people (especially women) who do things differently than the status quo. Who have a desire, a passion and a fuel to do something big- and actually follow that calling. It's SO hard friends. SO freaking hard. This is why I was so fueled and inspired by my conversation with my friend Maggie Doyne, Co-Founder and CEO of the BlinkNow Foundation. In this episode we talked about: What it looks like to navigate privilege, radically listen and work through the "white savior compex" How to have scrappy, messy hope in the midst of todays cultural climate Ins and outs of motherhood in all of its shapes and sizes The power of simplicity and getting our basic needs met I loved having Maggie Doyne on the podcast to discuss her highly anticipated debut memoir Between the Mountain and the Sky: A Mother's Story of Hope and Love. As the CEO and co-founder of BlinkNow, a nonprofit dedicated to serving the children of Nepal, Doyne has been globally recognized for her community-based and sustainable initiatives abroad. The book highlights Doyne's inspirational coming of age story spanning over a decade since she journeyed from her comfortable middle-class New Jersey home for the college gap year that forever changed the trajectory of her life. When Doyne first arrived in Surkhet, Nepal the area was just coming out of a civil war that left families in poverty and many children orphaned on the streets. After an unexpected encounter with a Nepali girl breaking rocks in a quarry, Doyne decided to invest her life savings of five thousand dollars to buy a piece of land and open the Kopika Valley Children's Home with a vision to care for, comfort, educate, and empower the children of the community. Alongside BlinkNow co-founder Tope Malla, Doyne has gone on to open a school, health clinic, women's center, and more, and was recognized for her remarkable initiatives as a 2015 CNN Hero of the Year. Do you ever look at people and brands you admire and assume they just have something special you don't have to build what they've built? That they're somehow superhumans, doing everything right as they build? Barret was one of our attendee's favorite speakers from our 2019 conference and it was such a joy to have him back in the Yellow Co. realm and he debunks this myth immediately. In our conversation, Barret speaks openly about his decision to go on Lexapro after experiencing the most challenging year of his life after starting ABLE, and what he learned through that experience. Barret and I talk about how ABLE is disrupting the fashion industry, working to be transparent about their lowest wages, providing inclusive sizing and help other fashion brands do the same. Listen to this episode to hear: Why Barret was found by his 2-year-old crying on the bathroom floor What is most helpful while moving through depression as a CEO of a company How we can't wait until we're perfect to be honest Why ABLE publishing their lowest wages is disrupting the fashion industry ABOUT BARRET: Leading a fashion lifestyle brand might be an unlikely role for someone self-described as “not a fashion guy,” but that's exactly where ABLE CEO Barrett Ward finds himself. As the visionary behind the rapidly growing Nashville-based company disrupting the fashion industry with a social conscience, Ward was inspired to start ABLE with the mission of creating sustainable economic opportunities for women. While living in Ethiopia, Ward and wife Rachel saw firsthand how extreme poverty forced many young women to make difficult choices for money. They wanted to give women the chance to earn a living with dignity. In 2010, they began ABLE by employing women who had overcome the sex industry to make handmade scarves. ABLE has since grown into a lifestyle brand carrying beautiful leather bags, jewelry, denim, apparel, and shoes with a primary focus on employing and empowering women in Ethiopia, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Nashville, TN. Beyond adding new categories and communities of impact, Ward and ABLE have also grown in their ambition for social justice. In 2018, ABLE became the first brand to publish their lowest wages, creating the #PublishYourWages movement and providing complete transparency to empower and protect the fashion industry's vulnerable workers – most of whom are women. Our very FIRST guest on the creating meaningful work is Reverened Nicole Garcia. She is the first queer transgender Latina ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as well as a working therapist. I first found out about Reverened Nicole from the Netfliex docuseries Coming Out Colton. Yes, there's a lot of controversy surrounding Colton as an ex NFL player cis genered white man getting a Netflix series, while most are cast aside. Reverened Nicole shows up in an episode about faith. Reverened Nicole shoots him straight. Telling him to own up to the pain he caused his ex girlfriend and figureout who he is. Her straightforward yet loving approach had me screaming at my TV... curious about this amazing woman and how I could talk with her. I found out she was the first queer transgender Latina ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as well as a working therapist. I gained so much insight from this conversation with Nicole. Her story of radically accepting herself is something we can all learn from, no matter what our experience. It's never too late to own who you are. It's never too late to step into your true, authentic self. When we do, that is where our most genuine, creative and impactful work comes from and Rev Nicole embodies that to her core. PS: If you have kiddos around, there is an F-bomb or two dropped in this one! Find out more about Reverened Nicole on her website here.Follow, subscribe and leave us a review! Tharangi's Poem from the episode: *Transition - a Passageway* by Tharangi Cumaranatunge Transition - It is not An escape - Nor an ending, Not a jump with no parachute And doesn't need mending, It doesn't need defending Nor ever pretending And no one's contending It is merely destiny bending. A transition is - A safe landing place before ... We travel up another stair case, When you are in the landing Cherish the pause, Rejuvenate the internal mission And the heartfelt cause. Live in the landing, fully aligned Take rest, sharpen tools, Open the mind, ...Be receptive and open to - what is. And get ready to be wowed and surprised. Creativity comes from unknowing, and the unknown And everything - you will eventually be shown. It is a passage that requires trust and faith A path that not all travellers take: Once taken bestows courage and bravery To arrive at a brand new place of discoveryFollow, subscribe and leave us a review!
