Why This Episode Is a Must-Listen The stock market feels more complex than ever—rising inflation, shifting interest rates, and non-stop headlines can rattle even the most seasoned investors. If you want to cut through the noise and build a long-term investing strategy that works, you'll want to hear directly from professionals who have navigated everything from market booms to bear cycles. This episode of Inspired Money brings together four leading investment minds to share real-world tactics, mindsets, and frameworks for surviving—and thriving—over the long haul. Meet the Expert Panelists David Stein is the founder of Money for the Rest of Us and a former institutional investment strategist who managed billions in assets as Chief Portfolio Strategist at FEG Investment Advisors. He now educates individuals through his top-ranked podcast, best-selling book, and investment tools platform Asset Camp, helping investors build resilient portfolios with confidence and clarity. https://moneyfortherestofus.com https://assetcamp.com Mariko Gordon, CFA, CFP® is the CEO of Uzume LLC, where she provides financial planning and consulting services to individuals and families. She previously founded and built Daruma Capital Management into a $2.5 billion firm with a distinctive, non-traditional approach to investing. With over 30 years of experience as a small-cap stock picker, she now helps clients navigate personal finance, entrepreneurship, and life transitions, drawing from her deep expertise in business, investing, and her multicultural heritage. https://marikogordon.com https://www.uzumellc.com Mike Taylor is the Lead Portfolio Manager of the Simplify Health Care ETF (PINK), the first 100% pro bono ETF with all net profits benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation. With over two decades of experience managing long/short healthcare equity portfolios at firms like Citadel, Millennium, and Diamondback Capital, Mike is widely recognized for running one of Wall Street's top-performing healthcare hedge funds. https://www.simplify.us Chris Wang, Managing Partner and Director of Research at Runnymede Capital Management, previously held roles as a research analyst and Assistant Portfolio Manager at TIAA-CREF. With over two decades of experience, Chris is known for Runnymede's unwavering integrity and distinguished track record in safeguarding clients' assets during turbulent financial times. www.runnymede.com Key Highlights: Building Resilient Portfolios David emphasizes the importance of asset allocation and diversification rather than focusing solely on picking individual stocks. By thinking like an endowment and blending global equities, bonds, and real assets, even individual investors can manage risk over time. He suggests, “As individuals, we can't just naively invest in the S&P 500 and hope things will go well… Our job is to understand the drivers and manage more like an institution.” Investing vs. Gambling Mariko draws a clear line between investing and speculation: investing has a positive expected return and is grounded in a long-term horizon and strong fundamentals, while gambling is driven by short-term bets and speculation. Her practical advice: “Do it for 10% of your portfolio and learn from your mistakes… Put most of your money elsewhere.” Adapting to Market Realities Mike shares that success in the market isn't about being right most of the time, but about surviving your mistakes and adapting. He reveals that the best hedge fund managers aren't right every day, but consistently compound small advantages: “The difference between a manager who's good versus great is literally 3% of days up more. And that, compounded, is your return.” Staying Rational in Volatile Markets Chris highlights the importance of sticking to a disciplined, research-driven strategy—and knowing when to be aggressive or defensive based on business cycles. Emotional investing and impulsive changes hurt performance. “Sometimes you just have to step away from the screen… avoiding the headlines and reading [only] on Sundays can help you keep perspective,” he says. Call-to-Action So here's your assignment for the week: Take 15 minutes and review your current investments. Ask yourself: Am I clear on why I own each holding? If you can't answer that confidently, dig in. Is it a value play? A growth opportunity? A dividend payer? Or something you heard about on social media? Clarity is the first step toward confidence — and confident investors stay the course. Find the Inspired Money channel on YouTube or listen to Inspired Money in your favorite podcast player. Philanthropy: More Than Writing Checks Jacob Harold emphasizes that strategic philanthropy requires more than reacting to symptoms; it's about “thinking structures, long-term impact, and tapping into a toolbox of solutions—from data to community organizing to storytelling.” He challenges us to ask: Are we using all the tools available, and are we learning as we give? 2. Tackling Systemic Issues Over Band-Aid Solutions Bruno Fierens shares his journey—including tangible success and frustration—supporting homeless initiatives in Brussels. His perspective: “Philanthropy is amazing and needed, but it's almost always going to work on symptoms—not enough on structural issues.” Bruno argues for systemic approaches like fair taxation alongside charitable giving. 3. Youth-Driven Action for Climate Solutions Jamie Minden highlights how today's young leaders, born into the climate crisis, are pushing philanthropy toward supporting community-driven and policy-level change. She shares, “Investing in grassroots organizations addressing policy and social change right now is vital if we want to turn the tide on climate.” 4. Why This Episode Is a Must-Listen What does your watch mean to you? For many, a timepiece is much more than a tool—it's a bridge between generations, a celebration of achievement, and a lasting legacy. In this episode of Inspired Money, we go beyond the basics of watch collecting to explore why watches become treasured family heirlooms, how to build collections that stand the test of time, and what every collector (from beginner to seasoned expert) should know in today's evolving market. If you're passionate about craftsmanship, storytelling, or the idea of passing something meaningful onto future generations, this episode is for you. Meet the Expert Panelists Paul Boutros is Deputy Chairman and Head of Watches, Americas at Phillips, where he helped build the auction house's powerhouse watch department after joining in 2014. A lifelong watch enthusiast with a background in electrical engineering, he led the record-breaking sale of Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona for $17.8 million, solidifying his reputation as one of the foremost experts in vintage timepieces. https://www.phillips.com Stephen Pulvirent is a writer, photographer, and creative director whose career has spanned leading roles at Hodinkee, Bloomberg, and Surface Media. Now based in Los Angeles, he is the founder of Rime & Reason, a creative agency helping global brands tell smarter, culture-driven stories, while also pursuing his passion for fine art photography. Stephen is also the cofounder of The Enthusiasts, a podcast and newsletter about the culture of watch collecting. https://stephenpulvirent.com Tariq Malik is the founder of Momentum, the Middle East's premier destination for vintage and collectible watches located in heart of Dubai's financial district. Driven by his deep passion for rare Day Date models, both as curator and collector he has developed a focused expertise that has made him a leading authority in this field. A lifelong enthusiast who began dealing Swatch watches at 16, Tariq has grown into a respected global voice in the vintage watch community while playing a pivotal role in establishing Dubai as a significant hub for vintage timepieces. https://momentum-dubai.com Dan Spitz is a third-generation Master Watchmaker and former lead guitarist of the award-winning thrash metal band Anthrax. With Swiss and American degrees in watchmaking and micro-mechanical engineering, Dan's illustrious career includes roles as the Head Master Watchmaker of Complications Specialist for Chopard, instructor, and juror for the prestigious GPHG awards. https://danspitz.com https://www.delraybeachwatchmaker.com Key Highlights: 1. Storytelling & Legacy in Watch Collecting Stephen Pulvirent explores why watches are more than just mechanical objects—“it's the stories that watches carry, the stories we tell ourselves about the watches we own and the roles they play in our lives that elevates them beyond ordinary, everyday things and makes them special objects.” Collectors aren't just building assets but capturing lifetimes of meaning that can be passed on for generations. 2. The Restoration Craft: Preserving Memories Dan Spitz demystifies the watchmaker's role in bringing legacy timepieces back to life. He shares moving stories of clients reconnecting emotionally with watches once thought beyond repair: “Some of them cry. You can see they want to reach out and hug me, and that's why I do what I do.” Restoration isn't just about function—it's about reviving memories and enabling the handover of treasures between generations. 3. Authenticity, Transparency, and Investment Smarts Paul Boutros provides insider guidance on buying for love, not just investment. He stresses the importance of authenticity, craftsmanship, and reputation: “Buy the best quality watches at the price level that you can afford… made by great brands who have pushed the state of the art.” Whether for legacy or potential appreciation, collecting watches well is about informed passion, not quick returns. 4. From Teenage Trader to Dubai Authority Tariq Malik recounts how Swatch trading as a teenager evolved into a global vintage watch business. His journey underscores the importance of transparency, relationship-building, and quality when buying or selling a timepiece. “Today it's a lot about the value, but the real richness is in the connection you have with the watch and its story.” Call-to-Action This week, pick one watch—whether you wear it daily or have it tucked away—and write down the story you want it to tell. Is it a symbol of achievement, a family heirloom, or an inspiration for the future? Share that story with someone you care about, or reflect on how your collection can become a living legacy. Why This Episode Is a Must-Listen Feeling overwhelmed by information overload? Struggling to turn ideas into action? In this episode of Inspired Money, host Andy Wang sits down with renowned entrepreneur and author Pat Flynn to discuss practical strategies for mastering “lean learning,” lessons from his new book Lean Learning: How to Achieve More by Learning Less. Whether you want to build passive income, overcome imposter syndrome, or finally break through the noise to implement your ideas, this conversation delivers actionable insights for professionals in today's fast-moving, digitally saturated world. Meet our Guest Pat Flynn is a serial entrepreneur, founder of Smart Passive Income (SPI), and a leading authority on online business, productivity, and education. He's written four books, including "Will It Fly?" and his latest, "Lean Learning: How to Achieve More by Learning Less." Pat is known for his transparency in sharing wins, failures, and real-world tactics for building meaningful businesses and communities. Key Highlights The “Just-in-Time” Learning Advantage Pat Flynn explains the difference between “just-in-case” and “just-in-time” learning. Instead of hoarding information for every possible situation, he advocates focusing only on what's immediately relevant: “Know your next step. Do that, and then you'll figure it out.” This targeted approach prevents information overload and accelerates real progress toward your goals. Turning Fear Into Fuel Pat candidly shares how fear of failure and perfectionism held him back early in his career—and how reframing mistakes as part of the growth process changed everything. “I'd rather fail faster,” he says, encouraging us to see failure as information, not a dead end. His story about iterating on the SwitchPod invention, and his advice for parents and mentors, inspire us to lead by example and embrace vulnerability. The Power of Community & Accountability Both Pat and Andy highlight the importance of community as the “bedrock of learning and development.” Whether it's mastermind groups, in-person meetups, or simply sharing your goals with a respected mentor, being part of a supportive ecosystem multiplies motivation, provides feedback, and delivers unexpected opportunities. “You can't read the label when you're inside the bottle,” Pat notes—underscoring why outside perspective matters. Force Functions: Create Your Own Deadlines Pat discusses the concept of “voluntary force functions”—deliberately putting yourself in higher-pressure situations (like agreeing to a keynote speech) to catalyze rapid learning and growth. This tactical shift turns intention into action and helps beat procrastination. As he puts it, “When we choose to opt into situations where we have to do the thing...we can harness a temporary and strategic stressor for life-changing transformation.” Call-to-Action This week, pick one area where you've been stuck in learning mode—then take a small, concrete action toward implementation. Whether it's launching a project, signing up for your first community meetup, or sharing your idea with a trusted mentor, make progress by doing—starting today! Andy Wang, a young office employee working in Shanghai, recently booked flights from Shanghai to South Korea's Jeju island for the upcoming Spring Festival holiday. The round-trip airfare cost him a little over 2,000 yuan ($274), half the price for round-trip flights from Shanghai to popular domestic destinations such as Harbin in Northeast China's Heilongjiang province. Going on a trip to celebrate the holiday, which starts in late January, has become a new trend among Chinese consumers, and many like Wang have found that some overseas destinations offer better value for money compared with domestic ones. For example, it is cheaper to book flights to Bangkok, Thailand, than to Sanya, Hainan province, during the break. Spring Festival bookings for outbound flights and international hotels this year have already more than doubled compared with the same period last year, according to Qunar, a Beijing-based online travel agency. International airfares for the eight-day holiday have on average dropped 12 percent year-on-year, while airfares for some popular destinations such as Tokyo in Japan, Cairo in Egypt and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam have on average dropped 20 percent year-on-year, data from Qunar showed. 20%。For some niche destinations in countries such as India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Argentina, hotel rates for the Spring Festival holiday have on average plummeted by over 40 percent year-on-year, the online travel agency found. Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival in China, and Chinese people tend to go home for family reunions or take short trips within the country. Therefore, major domestic destinations, especially those popular for winter tourism, witness a surge in prices during the holiday," said Cai Muzi, a researcher for Qunar. As most foreign countries neither have the tradition of celebrating Spring Festival, nor do they have public holiday during the time, the travel rush is relatively low, Cai said. With fewer number of tourists, the price fluctuations are not significant overseas, which makes outbound travel to some places cheaper than domestic tourism," she added.“由于国外游客数量减少,海外价格波动不大,会出现一些出境游比国内游更便宜的现象。” According to Qunar, Chinese users of the online platform have booked flights to more than 1,300 cities in 96 countries for the Spring Festival break. Some overseas destinations that have recorded higher growth in terms of flight booking volume include Siem Reap in Cambodia, Nagoya and Sapporo in Japan, Budapest in Hungary and Hanoi in Vietnam. Flight bookings to these places have more than tripled year-on-year, Qunar said. To cash in on this holiday travel trend, a number of domestic carriers have increased their capacities on multiple international routes. In mid-December, China Southern Airlines increased the frequency of its flight between Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and Phuket, Thailand, raising the number from seven round-trips per week to 14. The carrier has also increased the frequency of its flights connecting Guangzhou to Chiang Mai in Thailand and Sabah in Malaysia.12月中旬,中国南方航空将广东省广州市与泰国普吉岛之间的往返航线从每周7个增加至14个。 China Southern has announced that starting in January, it will resume its flights from Zhengzhou, Henan province, to Bangkok; from Shenyang, Liaoning province, to Bangkok; and from Changsha, Hunan province, to Singapore. A recent trend report by Singapore-based budget carrier Scoot said that Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand have become popular destinations for Chinese travelers, partly due to their visa-free entry policies and proximity to China, with many people buying tickets just one week in advance. plummetv.

Chef Shirley Chung is going through treatment for tongue cancer. Her options were to amputate her tongue or go through a more risky and less proven route of treating it with aggressive radiation and chemo. Being a media star and chef, losing her tongue was not an acceptable option even if it meant more risk. Shirley and her husband Jimmy ran her restaurant together but they had to close shop while Shirley undergoes treatment. My sister Caryl and their good friend Andy Wang (the three of them make up the infamous Dumpling Mafia), are doing what they do best, putting on a culinary event, but this time to help their good friend. So many great chefs and organizations are coming out to support Shirley. It takes place on Sunday, October 27th, 2024. See my bio for a link to get tickets. If you're not in the area but would still like to help out, there's an account set up that will get your donations to Shirley. It's @dumplingmafiaHQ on PayPal. Please give in whatever way you can, even if it's just sending Shirley your positive healing vibes!
