In this episode of Trumanitarian, recorded on the sidelines of the Center for Humanitarian Leadership Conference in Doha, host Lars Peter Nissen sits down with two sector heavyweights: Sofía Sprechmann, former Secretary General of CARE International, and Amitabh Behar, Executive Director of Oxfam International. Together, they confront some of the humanitarian sector's most uncomfortable truths. The aid sector is full of elephants—entrenched power dynamics, outdated models of partnership, performative reform, and organizations that may simply be too big to change. This conversation takes those challenges head by examining the Pledge for Change, a joint commitment by major INGOs to decolonize aid through equitable partnerships, ethical storytelling, and systemic transformation. But the discussion also goes deeper—into the contradictions of leading large organizations while trying to dismantle the very systems that sustain them.

In this episode, Nora Lindström, Senior Director of ICT4D at Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and Erin Quinn, Senior Director of Customer Success at Dimagi join the podcast to discuss the evolving role of the iNGO in the context of localization and advancing local leadership, the intersection of technology and localization in global development, and the ways that technologists in global development can center the people we serve in our work. In the conversation, we learn Nora's journey and insights into the transformative power of technology in global development. From empowering local communities with data to navigating the challenges of localization, Nora offers her thinking on balancing tech innovation with human-centered practices. Key topics: Tech as an Enabler, Not the Goal Nora emphasizes the importance of listening deeply to identify real problems before introducing technology. Successful ICT4D involves tailoring solutions to local contexts and needs. Different Approaches to Enabling Programs with Technology Erin shares the ways that iNGOs across the sector are equipping their teams with tech tools. Nora shares how it adapts its approach based on the partner and context. Empowering Communities with Data Nota notes global development's tendency towards extractive data collection practices and highlights her work making data useful for the people it's about. For example, in Malawi, village committees use CRS-provided data to advocate for local changes. The Evolving Role of INGOs As localization gains momentum, CRS is evolving into a capacity-building and knowledge-sharing role, preparing local organizations to lead development initiatives independently. Building Diverse Teams Nora highlights the value of diversity within CRS's ICT4D team, bringing together cross-disciplinary expertise to solve global challenges creatively and effectively. No speech in our sector is complete without emphasizing the importance of equitable partnerships and local leadership. At the same time, we see “America/Europe first” policies on the rise in donor countries. Their politicians want ODA to benefit foreign policy interests and control the inevitable risks. In recipient countries we see dissatisfaction with the results of development cooperation or even outright anti-Western sentiments. What do truly equitable international partnerships look like and how can we realize them within such a political climate? What is the future role of INGOs if such locally led, equal partnerships are a reality? We discuss this with Abdilaziz Musa, Director of Programs at the Somali NGO ‘Media Ink' who wrote a report about linking the concept of ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion' (DE&I) to international partnerships. We will apply these together with Daan Stelder. He works for the International branch of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG-i), being one of those international actors working in Somalia on issues of governance and democracy. Abdilaziz Musa is one of the founders of MediaINK, where he focuses on leadership, managing complex projects, and building strategic alliances with donors, and international and in-country institutions. His work is centered around bringing together different stakeholders starting with communities, with a focus on fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Daan Stelder works as Senior Project Manager at VNG International, the international cooperation agency of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities. He manages programmes to enhance democratic local government in East- and Southern Africa. This includes leading consortia of diverse organisations to implement projects on disaster risk management, local governance and accountability in various regions of Somalia. It's no secret that promises to deliver more humanitarian and development funding to local and national organizations have not been fulfilled. During the high-level week of the 79th U.N. General Assembly, Devex caught up with Degan Ali, who heads the Kenya-based NGO Adeso. Ali is a leading voice in the aid decolonization movement, which seeks to decenter the voices of Western decision-makers and shift more power to local leaders in the global south. Ali discussed the lack of trust and credibility given to local NGOs compared to international organizations, challenges in meeting the 2016 “Grand Bargain” target of 25% funding to local organizations, and how bureaucracy and risk aversion in organizations like the U.S. Agency for International Development is hindering localization efforts. And while she gave USAID Administrator Samantha Power credit for elevating the localization agenda, Ali called the effort to get bilateral organizations to shift to locally led development an “impossible, impossible uphill battle.” “But where I do feel like there's hope and there's opportunity, is for the [international] NGOs to change and philanthropy to change, and those are the spaces where we need to put a lot of pressure,” she said. “And that's what we're trying to do at Adeso with the Pledge for Change with the INGOs, and the decolonizing philanthropy work that we're doing.” Devex Global Development Reporter Elissa Miolene sat down with Ali for a special episode of our This Week in Global Development podcast series.
SummaryHow should INGOs discern what roles are still relevant, legitimate, and needed, at this moment in civil society history? And which roles they therefore should *stop* playing? Is there more here, over and beyond stopping service delivery? (Which on its own is quite the shift)In this NGO Soul+Strategy podcast episode, I interview Dylan Mathews, Chief Executive Officer at Peace Direct. Peace Direct has been quite vocal, and has acted as a thought leader on this role question -- which I consider fundamental, and which I don't see INGOs facing head-on sufficiently yet. Dylan's Bio:Chief Executive Officer of Peace Direct Director of International Programs at Y Care InternationalProgram Manager at CAREWorked on conflict countries and issues with Landmine Action, Oxford Research Group, and the British Red Cross We discuss: While the sector is changing, once again, on several fronts (in terms of programming approaches, shifting authority/decision rights to the place of program impact representation, biz models, operating models etc.), what seems to get less attention is whether the organization should go through a fundamental role shiftCommon sense would say role and function, as well as strategy, should come before the other types of changes mentioned aboveOne organization that is advocating that NGOs need to tackle the fundamental question of role shift is PeaceDirect, with Dylan Mathews as its leader. So what roles are still appropriate, especially for global North-founded INGOs?Dylan explains the nine roles that Peace Direct thinks are still appropriate for INGOs What are, importantly, the implications of a change in role and function for, for instance, board competencies and mindsets, organizational size, staff competency profiles, and culture?Dylan shares what gives him hope as INGOs traverse this journey, but also what makes him skeptical that the role shifts Peace Direct points to will actually take hold among INGOs, Resources:Peace Direct WebsiteDylan's LinkedIn ProfilePeace Direct reading resources: Link1, Link2, Link3 YouTube video of this podcastClick here to subscribe to be alerted when new podcast episodes come out or when Tosca produces other thought leadership pieces.Or email Tosca at tosca@5oaksconsulting.org if you want to talk about your social sector organization's needs, challenges, and opportunities. You can find Tosca's content by following her on her social media channels: Twitter LinkedIn Facebook Youtube
Jamie speaks with Deborah Doane. She's been working as a leader in civil society for over 25 years. She's a Partner of Rights CoLab and co-convenor of the RINGO Project which seeks to reimagine INGOs and their role. Her new book - “The INGO Problem: Power, privilege and renewal” - was recently released. It can be found at bookstores and online. Jamie asks her about the shortcomings of INGOs and how international groups can improve the way they assist local communities. They discuss the relationship between INGOs and national NGOs, including how INGOs stifle the work of national partners. Jamie also brings up localization, a big buzzword in the humanitarian sector right now. Jamie asks Deborah if she really believes localization can be achieved.
Embodying Change: Cultivating Caring and Compassionate Organisations
In this episode, Melissa Pitotti speaks with Deborah Doane, author of The INGO Problem: Power, Privilege, and Renewal. Deborah brings decades of experience in the humanitarian and development sectors, from leading the Ombudsman Project for humanitarian accountability to co-founding the RINGO Project, which is pushing for systemic change in global civil society. The conversation explores key themes from Deborah's book, including the challenges of reforming the INGO sector, shifting power to local actors, and embracing new roles for INGOs in the future.Key topics covered:A perspective on "embodying change": Deborah's reflection on lifelong learning, stepping back, and listening. The INGO Problem: Power dynamics, accountability, and how the current INGO system can sideline rather than support local actors. The RINGO Project: Systems change and prototypes like the Reverse Call for Proposals that aim to shift power and resources to local civil society organizations. The future of INGOs: where INGOs move away from direct service delivery and focus on facilitation, advocacy, and fiscal sponsorship for local actors. The role of donors: How funding mechanisms must evolve to support more equitable, trust-based partnerships.Learning from prototypes: RINGO's innovation approach, trying out new models for accountability, risk management, and participatory grant-making.Quotes:“Embodying change means constantly learning, living my values, and interrogating my own actions.” – Deborah Doane“If INGOs truly want to show solidarity, they need to shift their role from service delivery to supporting local actors to lead.” – Deborah Doane“The bureaucracy and compliance requirements are protecting no one—they need a revolution.” – Deborah Doane“Prototyping is about trying something out, and if it doesn't work, you've still learned something.” – Deborah Doane“We need to rethink the role of INGOs in the future—they must be smaller, more flexible, and in service to local communities.” – Deborah Doane"The need for system-wide change is clear, and everyone has a role to play." – Nana Asantewa AfadzinuDeborah Doane is an independent consultant and author with over two decades of experience in humanitarian and development sectors. As localization continues to be a hot topic in global development, nearly every international nongovernmental organization seems to be rethinking their role in the aid sector, and debating how, when, and if they should continue showing up. We discuss how INGOs are aiming to rebalance the equation between INGOs and local groups, and whether the reforms will help empower and give voice to local communities. This week we also published an interview with PEPFAR chief John Nkengasong, who warned that if the world fails to eliminate HIV as a public health threat by 2030, political leaders will lose interest in fighting the disease paving the way for its resurgence. Are INGOs working themselves out of a job? What is the future of PEPFAR, the U.S. global AIDS initiative? To dig into these stories, and others, Devex President and Editor-in-Chief Raj Kumar sits down with Business Editor David Ainsworth and Senior Reporter Adva Saldinger for the latest episode of the podcast series. SummaryWhat are some structural things that are wrong in development aid and in civil society?Which mindsets most need to be decolonized when it comes to the relationship between global South civil society organizations (CSOs) and INGOs?Global North-founded INGOs need to be reimagined. How, in turn, do global South-founded NGOs have to change to take over many roles that INGOs currently still fulfill? And how do they need to recalibrate their power relationships with INGOs?In this NGO Soul+Strategy podcast episode, I interview Charles Kojo Vandyck, a development practitioner based in Ghana, a leader at the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), and a thinker on alternatives to development and alternatives to INGO models. Charles' Bio:Development practitioner, based in Ghana, who is on a mission to drive transformative change within civil societyHead of the Capacity Development Unit at the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI)Core team member, RINGO project – Reimagining International NGOs Founding Member of the International Consortium on Closing Civic Space (iCon)Trustee of INTRAC and an Advisory Board Member of Disrupt DevelopmentHost of the podcast Alternative Convos, which focuses on social cohesion as well as social change in Africa. You can find Alternative Convos on Spotify We discuss: The West African Civil Society Institute (WACSI), based in Accra/Ghana, is a regional organization focused on civil society support and institutional strengtheningRINGO project: the Reimaging the INGO project is a collaborative global project among civil society leaders to prototype new models of INGOs that shift power to the global South and equalize relationships between global South and global North NGOs as well as fundersAccording to Charles, here are some of the problems with current models of development and aid architecture: a projectized approach to development; local expertise of people is insufficiently recognized in project design; the ad-hoc and short-term nature of money flows; the presence of dependency cultures; lack of asset-based models to development (instead of deficit-based ones)The policies and ways of working of INGOs have to be part of what needs to shiftThe RINGO project helps to identify areas of stuckness and develop prototypes for alternativesThe hardest nuts to crack within the RINGO project are related to structural racismGlobal South NGOs also need to change their models: they need to invest more in talent development and succession planning, to help generational shift from founders to successors; develop their skills in intersectoral as well as intersectional approaches to development; and invest in technology skills. Man šis pokalbis buvo tikras malonumas. Tikiuosi, kad klausyti gera bus ir jums. Marija

Episode 77: Joe Weston & His Book, Mastering Respectful Confrontation: A Guide to Personal Freedom and Empower, Collaborative Engagement With a career spanning 30+ years in the fields of conflict prevention, leadership, stress management, and communication, the wisdom Joe shares in this conversation and through his books seems to be more timely (and deeply needed) these days than ever. Having first started out as an actor -- and then teaching his own method -- and specializing in communication, Joe has been drawn to the power of connection and understanding that can lead us as a species to either become more cohesive and connected or fall to disconnection and distrust. It says a lot about Joe's work and character that, while I look at this conversation and see the fear we all have inside of us that leads to that disconnection, he sees, believes, and is pulled more toward the hope that exists and that is out there. Although he's hopeful, he knows it takes work -- in understanding both ourselves and others. Before looking to the outside world and either saying our needs aren't being met or believing another's needs are not as important as our own, we need to look inward, into our hearts, to see what this life should be all about. Do we want to allow it all to fall apart around us, or take responsibility and contribute as much as we can -- no matter how little or how much -- to creating ripple effects of support, concern, and community? Each of us is more powerful than we believe. In my coaching, I've see most of us don't understand this. We leave too much ability, desire, and skill on the table by underestimating ourselves. We need to turn that around. Conversation Highlights "Unfortunately, the planet is filled with an enormous amount of information gatherers who haven't learned very much." The problems in our world are complicated. The solutions are simple. But implementation is hard work. The dangers of Chronic Niceness The Power of Assertiveness vs. The Pitfall of Aggression How Joe's work helps you get physical vitality, emotional stability, mental clarity, and spiritual grounding The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Joe is, How do you balance understanding who you really are and what you need/want with your responsibility in what the world needs? Boju Bajai in conversation with Dr. Amina Singh. In this episode, we talk about various aspects of Nepal's education system by exploring issues like how students in Nepali classrooms are taught history and civic studies, and why there is an urgent need for Nepali classrooms to equip students with the skills to think critically, question and reason. Amina Singh worked as a management consultant in the development sector for almost a decade conducting assessment studies, reviews, and evaluations for NGOs, INGOs, and multi/bilateral agencies. She earned her PhD from the Centre for Research in Learning and Change at the University of Technology, Sydney in 2015. Amina currently works as an independent researcher and educator, with an interest in community development, civic engagement, educational governance, and teaching learning practices in higher education. She is an adjunct faculty at Kathmandu University. She is currently engaged as a member of the University of Nepal Development Board and the Chair of the Academic Planning Committee. SummaryHow should we think about the ‘collective journey to equitable development' of Northern-founded NGOs, national NGOs and their funders? What obstacles stand in the way of continuing on that journey? Why does Humentum argue that NGO operating models need to enable ERA (Equitable, Resilient, and Accountable) development, and how does that need to come about? In this NGO Soul+Strategy podcast episode, I interview Kim Kucinskas, Director for Community Strategy at Humentum, on nonprofit operations as a driver of transformation. Kim's Bio:Director, Community Strategy, HumentumDirector, Member Engagement and Services, HuentumSeveral other roles in Humentum since 2012Worked in Namibia on issues related to local epidemicsFundraising role at the International Institute for Cooperation and Development We discuss: The pressure is building for significant change in the northern INGO sector; it's coming from all frontiersThere is actual strategic power in the operations model; if we change it in a significant way, big change happens in the power distribution between northern INGOs, funders, and national NGOsHumentum argues this in their new 3-part series of reports on ERA: how to move to an Equitable (E), Resilient (R) and Accountable (A) development sectorBut this will only happen if northern INGOs, funders, and national NGOs make significant changes in their institutional architecture, people and culture, funding, and risk frameworksInstitutional Architecture is one of Humentum's main building blocks towards ERA: within this, organizations have to have sufficient autonomy for the sector to be able to be equitable, resilient, and accountablePeople and Culture: who is recruited, and works where; a shift in the ‘headquarters' concept from one that is location-based to role-based; where staff receive fair and equitable compensation, etc.Funding: the islands of innovation that are happening in various places need to become ‘mainland'Accountability, with a focus on risk management: within this, a shift from risk transfer to risk sharing is requiredBe mindful: the way in which the process of #shiftthepower is happening is actually reflective of the very ways in which power is still being held right now. What do nonprofits really need to know about social media in 2023? Get my brand new training, How to Stand Out on Social Media in 2023. Secure your early bird spot before the price goes up!After my recent discussion with Vic Hancock Fell entitled Shifting the Power to the People You Exist For I received a thoughtful email from a listener. She wrote: “It is so interesting to me that white, iNGO fundraisers are centered in this conversation. As a black fundraiser and content gatherer for more than 16 years, I believe our viewpoint is not often a part of the conversation. And, I know that some of us have different perspectives.” I appreciated that response, and I wanted to give this listener a chance to share a different perspective about fundraising for iNGOs, one not focused on “white guilt” and “white saviorism”. Vila-Sheree Watson is a multifaceted leader, fundraiser, and content creator, known for her dynamic and soulful approach to creativity and social justice. From a young age, she was drawn to the power of words and storytelling and found solace and inspiration in poetry, art, and music. In this episode, Vila-Sheree generously shares their perspective on the importance of including diverse viewpoints in the conversation around iNGO fundraising and storytelling. We discuss the negative impact of focusing too much on "white guilt" and "white saviorism" and the need to move towards authentic storytelling.Connect with Vila-Sheree: Email: vwatson@corusinternational.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vilasheree/ Inclusive Language Guide from Oxfam About Julia Campbell, the host of the Nonprofit Nation podcast:Named as a top thought leader by Forbes and BizTech Magazine, Julia Campbell (she/hers) is an author, coach, and speaker on a mission to make the digital world a better place. She wrote her book, Storytelling in the Digital Age: A Guide for Nonprofits, as a roadmap for social change agents who want to build movements using engaging digital storytelling techniques. In today's episode we flip the script and Jonathan Jackson interviews Amie Vaccaro to discuss her career journey, her experiences, and the lessons learned so far in growing the marketing team at Dimagi. The potential of digital to support iNGOs and governments can only be really unlocked when it becomes a foundational layer that supports all aspects of the organization's work horizontally. We often see digital projects failing when they are focused on one specific vertical or silo and not able to add value across an organization. Amie has been on a parallel journey building marketing as a horizontal and foundational team at Dimagi and together Jonathan and Amie unpack some of the lessons Amie has learned that are applicable to anyone leading a digital shared service within an organization. Some topics covered in this conversation include: The challenges of standing up a new horizontal shared service in an organization How to sequence value creation to build trust and autonomy over time Partnering with leadership to understand and guide strategic direction Balancing execution work with high-level strategic work Empowering a team to say no and prioritize tasks Related resources: Simeon Yosefe, Malawi's head of digital health, on the High-Impact Growth Podcast: https://sites.dimagi.com/high-impact-growth-podcast/gdhf-22/simeon-yosefe Coaching program that Amie mentions: https://joinflourish.com/

Amnesty International Triggers Global Criticism For Problematic Report Lacking Vital Context Amnesty International published a new report as part of its ongoing reporting on the war in Ukraine that has been widely criticized as lacking critical context and framing, triggering both internal and external condemnation. The report criticizes the Ukrainian military for violating “international humanitarian law” by putting civilians in harm's way in relation to where the Ukrainian military places defensive military equipment. While Amnesty (and other INGOs) rightly pride themselves on remaining neutral in evaluating humanitarian and legal violations (in fact HRW made similar assertions in a more thorough report), the framing of this particular report is being criticized for giving ammunition to Russian propaganda, misrepresenting legal norms via vague language, and sidelining Amnesty's own Ukraine office in its publication. After inflammatory tweets from Amnesty's Secretary General defending the report, Amnesty's director of its Ukraine office resigned in protest. (AI's Secretary General is now facing public calls to resign, and the organization has issued something of an apology.) Large nonprofits should heed this as a cautionary tale of the consequences of a very public fallout from bureaucratic misalignment of process and viewpoints between global/national and regional/affiliate offices.
