The Lord's Prayer may be the most familiar prayer in Christianity—and the most overlooked. In this episode of InContext, Michael Easley sits down with Brad Gray and Brad Nelson of Walking the Text to uncover the depth, power, and biblical context behind the prayer Jesus taught His disciples. Drawing from years of study in Israel, pastoral ministry, and personal experiences of grief and suffering, Brad and Nelson show how the Lord's Prayer is not just something Jesus taught—it's the prayer He lived. From Exodus imagery and the “heavens” language to forgiveness, grief, and the kingdom of God, this conversation reframes the prayer as a daily blueprint for discipleship. Whether you've prayed the Lord's Prayer for decades or rarely stop to think about its meaning, this episode invites you to hear it with fresh ears—and to rediscover how it shapes our understanding of God, ourselves, and our purpose in the world. Have you been praying the Lord's Prayer all wrong? We sit down with Brad Gray and Brad Nelson from Walking The Text to discuss their book Bringing Heaven Here and their cinematic feature film on the Lord's Prayer. And trust us, this isn't your Sunday school recap. Our conversation explores the historical, geographical, and biblical context of the most familiar prayer in Christian theology, revealing layers you've probably never noticed: Exodus connections, first-century Jewish cosmology, the kingdom of God as spiritual warfare, and why Jesus structured this prayer as the blueprint for kingdom living.Turns out, the Lord's Prayer isn't just something to recite—it's a declaration of war against the forces of darkness and a daily roadmap for partnering with God's mission on earth. We explore how "Our Father in the heavens" (yes, that's plural!) connects to ancient Israelite cosmology, why the kingdom of God is the heartbeat of Jesus's ministry, and how every line of this prayer maps onto Christ's life and mission. We'll also tackle spiritual warfare from a biblical perspective, challenging both hyper-charismatic extremes and the dangerous denial that evil is real. If you've ever felt stuck between "there's a demon behind every bush" and "spiritual warfare isn't really a thing," this episode will recalibrate your understanding.Plus, we get into the nerdy stuff: the Didache's instruction to pray this three times a day, the connection between the Shema and daily prayer rhythms, how liturgy functions as operating software for the soul, and why the Sermon on the Mount is structured with the Lord's Prayer at its center. If you've been treating the Lord's Prayer like a religious formality, prepare to have your mind blown. This is about joining Jesus in the mission of bringing heaven to earth—pushing out chaos, advancing God's rule and reign, and living with eyes wide open to the war unfolding around us.0:00 – Introduction5:35 – Why create a book on the Lord's Prayer8:34 – The Lord's Prayer as blueprint for life14:24 – How the prayer condenses Jesus's ministry23:16 – "Our Father" and the Exodus 4 connection31:38 – "In the Heavens": Ancient Jewish cosmology44:54 – Spiritual warfare and advancing God's kingdom55:46 – Resources and closingABOUT THE GUESTS:

We unpack why asking "what does this mean for me?" first can actually limit our understanding of Scripture, how culture, geography, and original language change everything, and why so many popular verses are misunderstood.  If you've ever felt confused, stuck, or unsure about what the Bible is really saying, this conversation will help you read Scripture with fresh eyes and deeper confidence. __________________________________________________________ Ready for more? Most of us learned the Lord's Prayer before we understood what it was doing. It became a ritual, something recited rather than lived.  But when Jesus' words are returned to their original world - the Jewish people under Roman rule, the long ache for redemption, the hope of a coming kingdom - the prayer opens up in ways most modern readers have never seen. It becomes less a mantra and more a mission. In this conversation with Brad Gray and Brad Nelson of Walking the Text, we explore why context is not a luxury but a lifeline.  Jesus wasn't offering a poetic devotional. He was giving His disciples a framework for partnering with God, joining the story that began in the Exodus, and learning to embody the kingdom He announced.  Every line reaches back to Israel's history and forward to God's future, shaping a people who would carry His reign into the world. From the clash of kingdoms under Rome, to the Jewish practice of communal prayer, to the way the early disciples finally recognized the kingdom at Shavuot, this episode invites us to see the prayer not as ancient words but as a daily blueprint.  This is what it means to bring heaven here - to live as a people formed by the Father, trusting His provision, forgiving like He forgives, and resisting the powers that distort His world. Key Takeaways Context is not extra; it's everything. Jesus assumed His listeners knew the Jewish, historical, and literary world behind His words. The Lord's Prayer sits at the “center of the center” of the Sermon on the Mount - Matthew's way of spotlighting Jesus' mission. Every phrase echoes the Exodus story and frames Jesus as the new Moses leading a new Exodus. “Daily bread” held layers: Israel's wilderness manna, Rome's grain system, and the hope of Messiah's provision. Ancient Jewish prayer was communal, formational, and participatory - not merely expressive. Jesus' kingdom message is not about escaping earth but joining God's work of renewing it. Salvation isn't the finish line; it's the starting point for disciples who bring God's reign into the world. In this episode, we welcome Brad Gray to the show. He is a national speaker, biblical lands study tour leader, bible expert, and author. He's also the President and CEO of Walking the Text which is an organization that teaches people how to read the bible with clarity and confidence. He leads multiple bible study experiences in Israel and Turkey every year. He's also the Executive Producer of a forthcoming TV show called The Sacred Thread which will take the audience through the ancient biblical world with exploration of famous locations, interviews with experts, and never-before-seen cinematic visuals of maps, historical figures, and painted scenes. In this interview, we discuss where his appetite for the Bible comes from, why most people struggle to read or study the Bible, why he decided to start taking people on study trips to Israel and Turkey, how those trips serve as a launchpad for people becoming lifelong studiers of the Bible, his views on masculinity inside the church, and much more.
