If you've been walking out this Christian life for any length of time, you have probably been called to love someone even when it hurts. Maybe it is hard because they don't love you back or maybe it is painful to watch what they are going through. That is the case with my guest Julie Boit. For two decades she has been called to the intersection of faith, global health, and human dignity, to impact the care of babies, children, and adults in Kenya, many of whom have been on their deathbed from HIV. Juli describes her journey as being marked by equal parts trauma and wonder as God has shown up over and over again to heal her heart in the process of using her hands to help heal and comfort others. Listen in for: · Why we need both courage and compassion in community to love · What it costs and how to love well · How to stay willing and tenderhearted even in tough situations · Finding God's goodness in the hard · How pain and grief give space for joy · What to do when prayer with words is hard Favorite Quotes: “Love is costly.” – Juli Boit “There is a healing power in presence.” – Tiffany Jo Baker Key Verse: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” – Matthew 6:26 Be sure to check out Juli's book Brave Love: a nurses story of courage and compassion in a Kenyan hospice and all the things she has going on with her work in Africa here. https://juliboit.com/ *If you're looking for perfectly polished people or podcast, this isn't for you. TRIGGER WARNING: THEMES OF SUICIDE. Laura was a teenage girl in the '60s when she found out she was pregnant. With no support from the father of the child and feeling the shame of her circumstances from her parents, Laura found herself in a home for unwed mothers, feeling forced to give her baby up for adoption. Laura wrote a book about her experience called You'll Forget This Ever Happened, and according to Laura, one of the most rewarding things about writing her book has been readers reaching out to tell her how much her book has helped them as well as increased their knowledge of women's lives in the 1960s and the Baby Scoop Era. Laura L. Engel, an award-winning author, is originally from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She moved to San Diego, California over 55 years ago. She lives with her husband, Gene and their beloved golden retriever, Layla. She is the mother of 5 adult children and 10 adored grandchildren. Two scenes from Laura's book have been performed live on stage at the San Diego Memoir Showcase and she is published in four Shaking the Tree anthologies as well as many online magazines including Writers Digest. Today finds Laura's life-long dream to write a book fulfilled. Her award-winning memoir You'll Forget This Ever Happened was published May 2022 by She Writes Press. It became a Best Seller on Amazon and finalist in the 2023 International Book Awards and in the 2023 National Indie Excellence Awards. In August of 2023, Laura was honored to be selected as the Local Author for San Diego's Downtown Central Library. Dignity Pajama designer Fran Goldberg used ingenuity to create pajamas for bedbound patients, and created meaning following the death of her parents. As a clothing designer, Fran knows design and fabrics. As a caregiver for both her parents at the end of their lives, she learned the importance of comfort, dignity, and convenience in pajamas. The designs of Dignity Pajamas include features that protect the skin and preserve the modesty of the wearer. When Fran saw a paid caregiver cut a t-shirt up the back for Fran's mother to wear, she knew her mother would never choose something like that to wear. Fran set out to design something that a woman would choose to wear. Her designs feature beautiful fabrics and styles for women, and dignified designs for me. Fran also incorporated practical design features to help caregivers provide care. The pajamas help the wearer to feel proud of how they look and be comfortable around visitors. In Today's episode, Saul talks to Juli Boit about her new book, “Brave Love: A Nurse's Story of Courage and Compassion in a Kenyan Hospice.” In 2004, at just 25 years old, Juli Boit embarked on a remarkable journey from her home in Los Angeles to a remote Kenyan village of Kipkaren River. Driven by a profound calling and desire to make a difference, Juli witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on the local community, particularly among young adults and children. Year after year, she dedicated herself to caring for the sick and dying alongside her Kenyan colleagues. Now, nearly two decades later, Juli has gathered a collection of stories that reveal the essence of her courageous and compassionate journey. Her new book, “Brave Love: A Nurse's Story of Courage and Compassion in a Kenyan Hospice” is a powerful testament to the transformative power of love and will be released on November 6, 2023. Brave Love invites readers to explore the heart and soul of hospice care in Kenya, offering a beacon of hope in even the most challenging circumstances. Guided by the question, “What does it look like to love in this situation?” Juli dives deep into the essence of love in challenging circumstances, something we can all relate to. And Juli will tell you that loving your neighbor can happen anywhere - both in a Kenyan hospice and right down the street. Laura Bruder works for Brave Love, a pro-adoption movement dedicated to changing the perception of adoption by acknowledging birth moms for their brave decision. Laura and I chat about the impact that creating an adoption plan can have for a mom experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. We discussed the emotions that birth mom go through before and after placing their child with an adoptive family, the benefits of considering an open adoption, the need that birth moms have for a community who understands what they have experience, and how adoptive families can honor the mother of their adopted child. This is a really important and necessary conversation. Whether you have adopted children, chosen adoption yourself, or maybe even know someone who made the brave choice to choose adoption, this conversation is for you.Show NotesSupport the showBe on a Journey of Ruth episode. Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Everyone connected to adoption needs to listen to this show. We talk about a new research report on how birth parents experience adoption. The results will surprise you! Our guest are the two main authors: Ryan Hanlon is the Executive Director of The National Council for Adoption, the national adoption organization providing resources and education for all people and organizations in the adoption world and advocating for sound adoption policies; and Laura Bruder is the Executive Director of Brave Love, an organization dedicated to changing the perception of adoption by acknowledging birth moms for their brave decision. In this episode, we cover:The Birth Parent Experiences report is based on the responses of 1,160 birth mothers and 239 birth fathers. Were these all domestic infant adoption rather than adoptions from foster care?Birth mothers who placed their child for adoption in 2010 or later were much more likely to report satisfaction with their decision than birth mothers who placed their child before or during the 1970s. Birth mothers' levels of satisfaction with their adoption decision increased each decade since the 1970s.The vast majority of birth mothers report experiencing stigma associated with their status as a birth parent. In fact, the percentage of birth mothers who experience some level of stigma about their decision to place their child for adoption has risen 20% since 1970.What is the demographic of the birth moms and dads who completed the survey? (age, race, education, number of adoption placementsHow has birth parent involvement in the adoption process changed? What factors were important to expectant moms and dads when choosing adoptive parents? What were the main concerns that birth moms had after placement? Looking back, do birth parents believe they made the right decision? What type of services and support do birth parents want and need post-placement? 78% of birth moms have contact with their child, and about 74% of birth fathers do. We don't know if these are open adoptions or if the “child” is now an adult. Are they satisfied with this contact? Are they satisfied with their decision to place a child for adoption? What factors influenced their level of satisfaction? The research found that birth parents' receipt of accurate information was significantly associated with adoption satisfaction for both birth mothers and birth fathers. What do you mean by accurate information? What percentage of birth parents reported that they were actively involved in choosing the adoptive parents, and did that influence their overall satisfaction with their decision?Three variables (receipt of accurate information, non-coerced decision-making, current contact with the child) were found to be the most strongly associated with levels of adoption satisfaction.Stigma of being a birth parent.Has stigma increased since the 1970s?Does stigma differ by race of the birth parent?Interesting that stigma increased from the 1970s to now for healthcare workers. This podcast is produced by www.CreatingaFamily.org. Have you ever wondered how to manage betrayals, failures, insecurities and live in the fullness of what God has for you? Then check out this sermon on brave love for insights and practical tools on how to live in the fullness of your identity in Christ.
God invites us to partner with us to love humanity. He loves us so much all he wants to do is overwhelm us with his love. And in return, send us out to go and love a broken humanity. But sometimes we can find ourselves in seasons where we are so broken that we can almost be fearful. Today as part of our what's love got to do with it series, we are coming around the topic of brave love and how God's love for us can help us to overcome the fear of rejection, disappointment and hurt in our journeys of loving others.

Derek Mack teaches on the Salvation Army, talking about who they were and what their purpose was. He shares a story about a defining moment for Circuit Riders, when a mantle was imparted during the Brave Love Summit of 2020. Derek teaches on different culture pieces that the Salvation Army carried and urges us that we cannot live off of other people's revelation but must know God for ourselves.
Show notes can be found at https://www.claysteves.com/podcast Ellen is a wife and a mother to 4 children, two of them adopted. She is an adoption advocate and avid book lover. To Ellen, the heroism of women who place their children for adoption leaves her in awe each day. Because of this, she started an organization in 2012, named BraveLove, to change the perception of adoption through honest, informative, and hopeful communication that conveys the heroism and bravery a birth mother displays when she places her child with a loving family through adoption. Ellen and I swim out to deep waters pretty quickly, and I admire the vulnerability and strength she shared with me, talking through the challenges of being a mom of 4 kids, 5 years old and younger, and leading a non-profit. Ellen taught me about Ebenezer's, and I'm sure many of you know what that is, but I did not. But I have actually been trying to apply the principle more clearly in my life since she and I had this convo. And of course, we talk about the founding and heart of BraveLove, which is an organization I have had the privilege of partnering with and supporting over the years, and I admired Ellen's perspective of stewardship with the mission and organization of Bravelove. Even though she was the founder and one of the early leaders, she maintained humility and awareness that it was not hers, rather, it was hers to steward. Great wisdom and perspective I want to continually apply in my own life. Enjoy!
Christy shares on having faith for practical miracles. Using the story of Peter awaiting death in jail, she makes the point that sometimes faith is not healing the sick or raising the dead. Sometimes, faith is simply seeing a stressful situation and going to sleep. We learn that there is a practical shift in our spirit when we choose the face of God over the face of fear in our lives and that faith is not the absence of fear. Faith is our dependence on a very strong God. This podcast is from a series of weekly Brave Love Bible studies that Christy and Shannon held over zoom.
Christy talks about the Spirit of Elijah and why that is relevant for us today. She shares how the spirit of Elijah is walking out the love of Jesus Christ with authority, courage and leadership. As Brave Love Women we can agree with Elijah's violence in confronting false god's of culture, Elijah's-risk taking, and Elijah's commitment to the word of God. This podcast is from a series of weekly Brave Love Bible studies that Christy and Shannon held over zoom.
Through the story of Ruth, Christy inspires us to be women of radical initiation in order to see change around us. We learn that initiation is the ability to be active before others are active. It is the key to being prepared for our callings and the Harvest. This podcast is from a series of weekly Brave Love Bible studies that Christy and Shannon held over zoom.
Iza preaches on the simplicity of sharing the Gospel. Since Jesus came to seek and save the lost, we are called to do the same. This podcast is from a series of weekly Brave Love Bible studies that Christy and Shannon held over zoom.
Brian and Shannon go after the burden of unforgiveness. We realize that in order to preach the full Gospel, with authority, we must take Jesus' forgiveness seriously. This includes forgiving ourselves as well as others who have hurt us. This podcast is from a series of weekly Brave Love Bible studies that Christy and Shannon held over zoom.
Christy, Shannon and Holly hold an important conversation on why every woman has the potential of being a powerful evangelist. They refute the lie that women's voices aren't valuable and inspire us with stories of Katherine Booth's role in the Salvation Army. We leave knowing that we are women of solution who have the opportunity to boldly bring Jesus to a hopeless world. This podcast is from a series of weekly Brave Love Bible studies that Christy and Shannon held over zoom.
Shannon talks about the importance of asking God for next steps after receiving an impartation or mantel. She shares from personal experience about removing distractions in order to hear God's voice more clearly. Michaela emphasizes the importance of burning for Jesus more than we burn for a cause. This podcast is from a series of weekly Brave Love Bible studies that Christy and Shannon held over zoom.
In Episode 10 of a Big, Happy Life, I get to introduce you to Lisa Leonard, founder of Lisa Leonard Designs, author of Brave Love, wife to Steven and mama to David and Matthias. Lisa and I met at a conference and quickly became soul friends. In fact, I would say this: the first conversation I ever had with Lisa was deeply rooting for me and actually helped me have the guts to transform into the woman I know God was calling me to be. Lisa and I are inviting you to pull up a chair beside us and have the same kind of conversation. We tackle big topics, like what makes us feel unloveable, the never-ending battle of feeling "good" enough, and the beauty of coming up imperfect again and again. I can't wait for you to listen and I hope + pray this conversation has the same impact that Lisa's voice had in mine.
