In this episode of Copeland's Corner, host Brian Copeland returns after a brief hiatus due to sinus surgery and discusses current national issues with his guests Brian Malow and Blaine Capatch. The conversation covers various topics such as allergies, comedy memories, and a significant discussion on political and social issues, including statements by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker regarding the rise of authoritarianism and a debate on whether Trump's actions can be considered Nazi-like. The panel also talks about the impact of Trump's administration on federal agencies, the mobilization of the left, and the potential consequences of healthcare policy changes. They also hit on the topic of vaccination, especially the controversial stance of some parents not vaccinating their children and whether that constitutes criminal negligence. They wind things down with personal anecdotes and reflections on coping with the current political climate, mentions of upcoming events, and light-hearted topics, such as the future of James Bond films under Amazon's control.--Connect with our Guests...Blaine Capatch: Nerd Poker PodcastBrian Malow: ScienceComedian.com & @ScienceComedian on IG --For more from Brian...Visit his website: www.BrianCopeland.comFollow on Social Media: Instagram - @CopelandsCorner & @BrianCopieEmail: BrianCopelandShow@Gmail.com --Copeland's Corner is Created, Hosted, & Executive Produced by Brian Copeland. Occasionally, in the course of developing topics and themes for this program, I run across a genuine treasure. So, full disclosure—as if you need me to tell you this—I'm a pretty serious, card-carrying geek of the highest order. I like science, I tend to geek out on it, and I'm always looking for new sources of knowledge about topics that most people don't care much about. So, you can imagine my delight when I ran across Brian Malow. Brian is equal parts science enthusiast, educator, speaker, comedian, and a few other things, as you're about to hear. I heard him speak at a conference years ago in Berkeley, and recently, I asked him if he'd join me on the program sometime. He said yes, so here's our conversation. By the way, you can learn more about Brian's work and booking him for your event (an excellent idea!) at https://sciencecomedian.com.

Brian Malow, is a well known science comedian who uses comedy to educate people and make more accessible many of the scientific topics that can perplex. He gives regular talks on science and has interviewed many of the worlds nobel laureates in the field of science and several of the astronauts who walked on the moon. In this episode I explore with Brian the way in which science is communicated to the public at large and the value of doing so in a relatable way. Brian tells me about his encounters with Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking and Buzz Aldrin. We hear about the role the media played in disseminating information to the public during the pandemic and how it might have been better. We talk about what regular people can learn from meeting very successful people who have mastered their own field and beyond, such as Brian May who aswell as conquering the world of music, has gone on to earn a Phd in science at the age of 59. This is a fun, informal chat with Brian about many different topics which I hope you will enjoy.
Andy's away, but Matt and Jesse are joined by Kevin Kataoka and returning guest Brian Malow to talk about pseudolegal grifts! Why you shouldn't talk to the police! Scientists who've grown a human embryo! Brian May side projects! Hedy Lamarr's inventions! Military subterfuge and ghost armies! And sailing a satellite out of orbit! You can join our Patreon to hear a bonus story about NFL jersey numbers.
In a galaxy far, far away — something AMAZING is happening! NASA's James Webb Space Telescope is beaming back to us un-be-liev-able photos of deep space. And you don't have to be someone with a light saber and a cape to appreciate what we're learning about our big, beautiful universe. What we're all seeing for the first time makes it pretty hard to believe there isn't some kind of intelligent life out there in the stars somewhere. So are we alone? Is Earth the only game in town? Nikki and Malone ponder the possibilities with astrophysicist and Webb Telescope team member Dr. Marcia Rieke, and science comedian (yes… he is!) Emery Emery (@emeryemeryii) and Brian Malow (@sciencecomedian) return to the podcast to talk with Matt and Jesse about their recent movie Science Friction, images of a supermassive black hole, a reduction in pollution leading to more hurricanes, and insane depth-of-field on a record-breaking camera.
Brian Malow is a comedian who loves science. Yes, you read that correctly. He is enthusiastic about creating connections between science and humor to deepen his audience's appreciation for nature. Longtime fans of the NC Museum of Natural Sciences will also recall Brian was the first curator of the SECU Daily Planet Theater. Welcome to Epi90 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, the show that tracks down clips of comedy podcasts from all over the web and sweeps them into a neat pile every week or so for you to scoop up with your dustpan-like ears and enjoy. You, dear reader, must also like to sweep a little bit into your eyes, since you're visiting the show blog. We’ve got a jammed packed episode: A half a dozen podcast clips. TWO of our Burst O’ Durst segments with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst, who talks to us about the Washington Redskins debacle and how to properly observe the 4th of July. A brand new Henderson’s Pants commercial for their "Camo CutOffs". Not to mention the TweetSack. But we also have a special guest for Epi90, making his return to the Succotash microphones: Jordan Brady, who was here last time to talk about his documentary called I Am Comic. Now he has his followup movie out – which he was musing about doing the last time we chatted with him – and it’s called I Am ROAD Comic. It’s a funny documentary and neat little study of comedy and comics on the road. I’m very excited to have Jordan back on the show and he was very kind to give me a lot of time in our Skype chat which you will hear in this episode. The interview is pretty long, so the show is front-loaded with the clips and other business and then we’ll spent the rest of the episode with Jordan. Since he last joined us, he’s also become a podcaster, hosting Respect The Process. It's a show about the world of commercial film production and we talk about that in our interview as well. (BTW, the title for this epi's blog came from a lip slip I made while talking to Jordan - a cross between chatting and Twitter, which was inadvertently coined to describe carrying on a prolonged exchange with someone via Twitter. Too bad Rich Hall doesn't write Sniglets books any more!) THE 10 MOST ACTIVE SHOWS ON STITCHER'S TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST I'm not sure if anyone really appreciates or enjoys this feature but I do! It keeps me looking at the top-ranked shows on Stitcher and that helps me to stay in touch with what's going on out there in PodcastLand. So a shout-out to Ed Wallick from the Don't Quit Your Daycast podcast who gave me the idea for this list in the first place! An offshoot of that is my appreciation of Dean's yodel of our show's name, which has begun to really develop over time, as can be heard over the theme song for this installment and again at the tail end of the show. CLIPS Thanks, as always, to our Associate Producer Tyson Saner, who provided a number of the clips heard this episode! The Geek GenerationThis clip - from a podcast we’ve featured before – was provided by the main man behind the show, Rob Logan. He says, “We've started playing a game on The Geek Generation called Smash-Up, which combines two categories or concepts of things together, creating some hilarious results for things you've probably never heard of. Recently, our Smash-Up category was to combine Godzilla with any other movie, and in this clip myself and my co-host Mikey read the responses sent in from our super-creative fans.” Word to the wise: Comedy podcasters are welcome to submit 3-5 minute MP3 or WAV clips from their shows to clips@SuccotashShow.com, and we'll feature them on the show! Proudly ResentsFriend-of-Succotash and past special guest Adam Spiegelman recently posted a "Succotash Shoutout" version of his show Proudly Resents. He had some bits, pieces, and tail ends of interview from his podcast so he put them together, Succotash-fashion, to serve to his listeners. Thanks, Adam! We're featuring part of that stew: A snippet of a conversation Adam had with filmmaker Jeremy Sklar. Revelstoke Jim’s Canadian ContentTyson harvested this next clip and, he couldn’t have known this, but I’ve been aware of Revelstoke Jim since the early aughts. It was around the year 2000 or 2001 that I began to make a series of guest appearances on But Seriously, an early webcast – there was an attempt by some broadcast-oriented companies to livecast shows – hosted by comedian Brian Malow. His show was part of a rudimentary network of shows and the one that was on right after his was hosted by none other than Revelstoke Jim. So I would catch snippets of his show. Here, some decade and some years later, is yet another snippet, live and direct from Revelstoke, British Columbia. Comedy And Everything ElseWe had comedian Fred Stoller on Succotash way back in Epi15 when we were one of the first podcasts that he’s been a guest on. Since then, Fred’s become a favorite guest of a lot of shows. (So many, in fact, that I’m surprised he hasn’t started one of his own, because he’d be a great host, I think.) He was on a recent episode of Comedy & Everything Else, hosted by comedian Jimmy Dore and Stefanie Zamorano, who co-host a solid, funny show (in league with Dore's own The Jimmy Dore Show.) Green Up!The world of pop culture-based comedy podcasts is both deep and wide, which means there are a lot of them. Tyson found us this one, which I hadn’t heard of before, hosted by Roy, Phillip, and Ryan. (Or, as they refer to themselves on their show blog, “three fatties”.) Their focus is on video games – console and PC, as well as TV, movies, and podcasts. (Hmm. Wonder if they ever mention SuccotashI?) In this clip, they’re musing about getting a-whuppin’ as a kind of celebration of Father’s day. There's your Epi90 in a bloggy nutshell. Enjoy! And don't say I never gave you anything… — Marc Hershon

Host: Chris Mooney Earlier this month, Point of Inquiry host Chris Mooney attended Science Online, the premiere science blogging conference, in the research triangle area. There were many science aficionados, communicators, and wonks present, but Chris found himself hanging out a lot with Brian Malow—aka, the Science Comedian. And get this—Malow lived up to his name. He was pretty funny. Chris decided he had to get him on air. Now, obviously, we couldn't have Malow do stand up for this program. Instead, Chris had to try to... draw humor out of him. And in the process, however inadvertently, he may have even told a joke himself. Brian Malow describes himself as Earth's Premier Science Comedian. He makes science videos for Time Magazine's website and contributes to Neil deGrasse Tyson's radio show—and performs widely. He's been featured on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and in Nature, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.
Yesterday I interviewed science comedian Brian Malow for Singularity 1 on 1. Brian is one of those unique comedians who is capable to not only make you laugh but also make you think. During our conversation we discuss topics such as: the name science comedian and the potential tension between science and comedy; serious comedy, […]
From Star Wars to evolution, this week's guest will surely make you laugh about science. Science comedian Brian Malow joins us to discuss science comedy and much more! Show notes at: http://laboutloud.com
00:00:00 – The Paleopals introduce themselves as the familiar Patrick, Charlie and Ryan but rounding out the quintet today are Zach and Kelly Weinersmith (it's ok to laugh) of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal and Weirnersmith.com. Drinks are varied and Zach throws a true curveball the likes of which the podcast has never seen. Tune in to find out! 00:05:39 – We chat with the comedic-science super couple Zach and Kelly Weinersmith (it's ok to laugh) about their various internet incarnations. Jokes are told, science is explained, and Patrick freaks out thinking he's got a parasite even though he probably doesn't. (Key word: Probably) 00:42:28 – Trailer Trash Talk this week skirts the edge of the appropriate as the Paleopals discuss, Four Lions, the new comedy about British terrorists. Fortunately for all involved there are barely any accents attempted. 00:57:03 – Stories and statistics have more in common than one might initially be comfortable with according to John Allen Paulos in his new piece for the New York Times online. Are scientists better at literature or are the culturally literate better at science? Can it be both? Probably not. The Paleopals discuss the why's and wherefores of stories and statistics, including a brief evolutionary snippet of just how the two might have diverged oh so long ago. 01:15:35 – PaleoPOW this week is initiated by Patrick with some extra-comedic feedback from former guest of the show Brian Malow! Charlie marvels at a pumpkin-shaped Brachiolope from paleoposse member B. Nelson. Or is it a Brachiolope-shaped pumpkin? Some questions are just begging to be answered. Ryan has some self-congratulatory feedback from a recent post of his on iFanboy commented on by a new breed of listener the iFanbasus paleopalis AMuldowney. You made it through the glory (yes, the glory) that is Part 1, and while Patrick and Ryan traipse around the globe (i.e. Pittsburgh) the Paleopals have made sure you have a boatload more content to get you through another week. Brian Malow sits in for another hour of tangential science beginning where we left off last week with the start of Trailer Trash Talk! 00:00:00 – Trailer Trash Talk has the guys seeing RED. Literally. There's a movie called RED. It's about spies who are very bad at staying secret cause they just can't blowing stuff up. Or something like that. 00:16:23 - Then it's off to tangent land again as the Paleopals and continuing guest Brain Malow start off talking about the UN's plan for alien contact. I seriously have no idea where the conversation went from there. E-mail in your reports after listening to paleopals@sciencesortof.com! 01:02:29 - PaleoPOW! Diving right in. Patrick has a comment from Betsy who has a complaint about Episode 55. Not about us, but about America and its ability to read and watch at the same time. Ryan has a “short but sweet” e-mail from old friend of the show Jeff Sykes! Charlie is laying down the rules for a new contest, details below. You need more content, I'll bet. Why not go get it at http://www.sciencesortof.com Music for the show: 99 Red Balloons - Goldfinger Contact High – Scissor Sisters The Wicked Science... sort of Autumn Quarter T-shirt Lottery. Alright Paleoposse, this lottery is free to enter, all you have to do is post our flyer up on to your school message board. -Get the flyer from sciencesortof.com (to your left, no... your other left) and print it off. -Tack it up to a message board or two around your campus. -Take a picture of your handywork and email it to paleopals@sciencesortof.com along with the t-shirt size and color that you know will make you look all sorts of darwinian fit. Good luck and thanks for spreading the science, Luv, The Paleopals
00:00:00 – Introductions abound and everyone has a drink. Patrick is undoing dehydration, Charlie is refreshing and Ryan's beer is responsible for years of oppression on Brian's. It's all very complex. 00:08:59 – Catching up with Brian Malow, earth's premier science comedian, and all his distracting facets. 00:31:21 – Supposedly this section is about monkeys and mirrors, they're connected somehow but of course we get off topic. You cannot expect me to honestly list all the tangents that happen here, can you? I'm just an intern, I don't even get paid. I linked to the story (on the website) they were supposed to talk about, isn't that enough?! Maybe once I re-listen to the thing (it's in the job description) I'll update this space and the website with some more links. 01:21:23 – Announcement about Episode 57 from our very own Patrick! This week's theme: Hilarity Ensues You never know what you're gonna get with Science... sort of and this week it's no exception. Somehow we lost segments and wound up with a longer than usual show, ain't it whacky!? 00:00:00 Apologies instead of intros, but you get enough info to keep listening. 00:01:36 We talk to science comedian Brian Malow. What more do you need to know? Isn't that enough? It's funny, I promise. 00:31:08 Trailer Trash Talk takes a trip... through time! The Paleopals ponder Hot Tub Time Machine. 00:42:26 Why do we laugh? Sounds philosophical but we try to tackle it from the psychological. Mallow provides most valuable insights. 01:04:02 Turns out a bee could pick your face out of a lineup. The Periodic Apocalypse: Occasional Lectures on the End of the World series kicks off on April 22, 2009, with a lively discussion featuring Dr. Kirsten Sanford (This Week in Science) and Brian Malow (the Science Comedian). The H1N1 virus emerged from Mexico in late March, borne on the sneezes of swines, and made its way into the US in a matter of days. The media responded in their usual hysterical way, inciting fear and panic around the world. Our program states facts about Swine Flu (H1N1), debunks the myths, and looks at the consequences of media misrepresentation and its effects in a society that is generally unable to differentiate between truth and fabrication. We also get a little silly. :) This program was recorded live, with a live studio audience, at the Pirate Cat Radio Cafe in the Mission district of San Francisco at 21st and Florida, on April 22nd, 2009.
