Ian Robb and James Stephens are singers and musicians based near Ottawa who have had a front row seat to the evolution of the Canadian folk music and sea music communities since the ‘70s and have played with groups such as The Friends of Fiddler's Green and Finest Kind. They have just released a new album, Declining with Thanks that contains a mix of traditional and composed songs and, of course, some songs of the sea. In this wide-ranging episode, we explore the ever-present and timely themes of war, love, and loss that make certain songs resonate across generations. We also dive deeply into Ian's experiences with the folk revival in the UK in the ‘60s, and how the traditional music scene in Toronto came to take on its own unique character.  ⚓︎ Shanties featured: - Opening credits: Paddy Doyle's Boots, trad. arranged by Pressgang Mutiny - Live song: Heave Away Me Johnny, trad. arranged by Ian Robb and James Stephens- Recorded song: Dead Funny, written by Brian Pearson, arranged by Ian Robb and James Stephens- Recorded song: Daft Annie, written by Ian Robb, arranged by Ian Robb and James Stephens - Live song: All Things are Quite Silent, trad. arranged by Ian Robb- Recorded song: I Wish They'd Do It Now, trad. arranged by The Friends of Fiddler's Green- Recorded tune: Kilkenny Jig, trad. It's been a rich exploration, these past six weeks, talking about death and dying. But what does it all mean? What have we learned? Where does it lead us on the spiritual journey? Perhaps, right back to where we started ... to the path stretching out beneath our feet, to this life. Live well now, in other words--purposefully, lovingly, gratefully--and the rest will take care of itself.Credits:Closing Song: "I'm Going to Miss all This"; words and music by Brian Pearson; performed by Brian Pearson, with Kim Linkert on clarinet.Photograph: by Guillaume de Germain on Unsplash

In this lifetime we may get glimpses from beyond the veil, but our steps return us to the path at our feet, here and now. Intentionality: Part I Personal Growth Thoughts from Brian Pearson, Executive Coach: Intentionality is based on your core values Being intentional includes understanding the process but also the relationships that go with the process With intentionality you learn to respect the people, the assets, the customers. Intentionality, over time, can be imbedded within a person In this process, there is reciprocity. The one adding value gains value Not everyone sees intentionality this way if instant results are the expectation. Mentoring in leadership is an intentional partnership. Description for Ray Wedgwood interview The post-war boom saw major road construction across the country which included many new bridges. There is much to learn from the life and times of this period. Recently, a well respected bridge engineer who had worked for the New South Wales Road Authority passed away. Ray Wedgwood was technically excellent, but he also had a passion for the aesthetics of a bridge. It helps if it looks good. During his career, Ray's manager at the time, Brian Pearson, wrote a book, "Aesthetics of Bridges". The Road Authority has subsequently put out a publication "Design guidelines to improve the appearance of bridges in New South Wales". But his long career also reflected a time when the professional engineer was valued within a more nurturing environment of the government authority. A man who was there at the time is our good friend, Ken Dobinson, who joins us on the line now.
