È un mattino di una primavera letargica e insolitamente fredda quello in cui il giovane Marcel, agente semplice di polizia e aspirante scrittore, è costretto a interrompere la sua ronda. Le grida di una donna che provengono da un vecchio palazzo popolare non possono essere ignorate e lo zelante novellino, insieme al suo collega, deve intervenire. Ma una volta sedata la lite furibonda tra un uomo e la sua cocotte, qualcosa trattiene Marcel: un gatto che gratta contro una porta chiusa e un odore dolciastro che filtra dalla soglia. Dietro quella porta, li accolgono una musica jazz che suona a vuoto e il corpo senza vita di una donna. Per i piani alti, il caso andrebbe archiviato come suicidio, anche se per Marcel troppe sono le incongruenze, troppo poco credibile la lettera d'addio, per tacere del volto esangue e magnetico di quella donna che gli chiede giustizia. Deciso a indagare da solo, si ritrova invischiato nella Parigi pulsante e scapestrata – tra atelier fumosi e caffè letterari, spettacoli sabotati dai surrealisti e lunghe notti per familiarizzare con le anime belle e inquiete di Man Ray e James Joyce, Kiki de Montparnasse e Henry Miller, Luis Buñuel e Zelda Fitzgerald. E poi c'è Ernest Hemingway, coi suoi baffoni, il viso bonario e lo sguardo indecifrabile, che ha mentito sul suo rapporto con la vittima: l'indiziato perfetto, se non fosse per quell'aura da scrittore affermato che colpisce Marcel proprio nel suo punto debole. Mentre la città danza sull'orlo degli anni Trenta ignara della catastrofe incombente, Marcel capisce che quello che sta seguendo è solo un filo nella trama di una ossessione letale. E che i nostri miti possono nascondere segreti oscuri, punti ciechi che non siamo disposti a illuminare.Gli anni cupi stavano per arrivare, a presentare il conto di tutta quella gioia di vivere nell'incoscienza del futuro, tra fiumi di alcol e scazzottate notturne. "L'orologiaio di Brest" di Maurizio de Giovanni e "Donnaregina" di Teresa Ciabatti "L'Orologiaio di Brest" (Feltrinelli) è il nuovo romanzo di Maurizio De Giovanni. Stavolta non ci sono i personaggi seriali, quindi non c'è il commissario Ricciardi o Sara Morozzi, ex agente dei servizi, non ci sono i Bastardi di Pizzofalcone, non c'è neanche Mina Settembre. Questo è un noir molto articolato, perché ci sono diversi personaggi e diversi piani temporali, dagli anni '70 ai giorni nostri. Le storie di questi personaggi si intrecciano in un modo che il lettore scopre solo alla fine del romanzo. C'è una donna quarantenne, Vera, che fa la giornalista ed è ossessionata dall'omicidio del padre che era avvenuto poco prima che lei nascesse: indaga sull'attentato in cui il padre era rimasto ucciso. Poi c'è Maddalena, 20 anni, che studia nella Capitale e vive una storia d'amore proibita con un uomo molto più grande di lei. C'è quello che viene definito un "barbone non barbone", che sa riparare in modo impeccabile gli orologi. Infine c'è un anziano con un grande potere che governa una non ben definita "Entità". Un romanzo sul potere, sui poteri occulti, sulle ossessioni e anche sul terrorismo degli anni '70. Nella seconda parte parliamo di "Donnaregina" (Mondadori) in cui Teresa Ciabatti torna a giocare, narrativamente parlando, con il suo alter ego, come aveva già fatto per esempio in "La più amata". La voce narrante è quella di una scrittrice/giornalista che non si è mai occupata di criminalità e che incontra diverse volte Giuseppe Misso, un ex boss della camorra, diventato collaboratore di giustizia, per scrivere un romanzo. Non è la ricostruzione della storia criminale dell'ex boss (38 omicidi commessi, 108 ordinati, accusato di rapina manoarmata, associazione mafiosa). Misso (persona reale) viene raccontato no tanto per i suoi crimini, ma nelle sue relazioni: il migliore amico quando era piccolo, gli amori, il rapporto con il figlio che fa coming out. Le vicende dell'ex boss si intrecciano con quelle della scrittrice che sta avendo problemi con la figlia adolescente (sono diversi i ricoveri in neuropsichiatria infantile).
