Leveraging Thought Leadership with Peter Winick
Crafting Books that Grow Your Brand and Business | Cathy Fyock | 640

What's the real reason you want to write a book? If your answer doesn't connect directly to your business goals, you may be missing the mark. In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Peter sits down with Cathy Fyock, a book strategist who helps authors write the right book—the one that aligns with their business, audience, and long-term strategy. Cathy shares why writing a book should never be step one. Instead, authors must start with a solid strategy: What do you want the book to do for your business? Who exactly are you writing it for? How will you leverage it to create opportunity, revenue, or credibility? We explore the importance of aligning your book's content and audience with your current business model. Cathy also explains why writing for “everyone” is a mistake, and why serving a clearly defined niche can lead to powerful results—even if it feels narrow. If you've ever wrestled with the choice between self-publishing, hybrid, or traditional publishing, Cathy breaks down the pros and cons of each. Her recommendation? Own your IP, own your margins, and stay in control. You'll also hear surprising insights about how some authors make more from not selling books—using them as a powerful sales tool to land clients, speaking gigs, and consulting contracts. Three Key Takeaways: • Start with strategy, not writing. A successful book begins with clear goals, a defined audience, and alignment with your business model—not just a blank page and good intentions. • Niche focus drives greater impact. Writing for a well-defined, specific audience builds credibility and creates stronger results than trying to appeal to everyone. • Books are business tools, not just products. The real ROI often comes not from book sales, but from using the book to generate leads, secure speaking engagements, or land high-value clients. If you found value in the strategic insights shared in this episode, you won't want to miss our conversation with Becky Robinson: "Writing a Book As an Extension of Your Business." Becky, the founder and CEO of Weaving Influence, delves into how authors can seamlessly integrate their books into their broader business strategies. She shares practical advice on launching a book, building a lasting platform, and ensuring your message reaches the right audience over time. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to amplify their thought leadership and make their book a cornerstone of their business growth.

In this episode of PivotMe, April shares a powerful conversation with Tisha, a business owner caught in the whirlwind of “getting everything perfect” before officially launching. April dismantles the common trap of prioritizing logos, websites, and speeches over the one thing that matters most: serving clients. If you're a business owner who feels stuck in endless preparation, this episode will help you refocus on what truly drives success—delivering value and asking for the business. Key Points: The “Perfect Setup” Trap: Tisha's story illustrates how entrepreneurs can get bogged down with non-essential tasks like logo tweaks, website edits, or speech writing. These activities often serve as a distraction from the real goal—gaining and serving clients. Getting Back to Basics: Business only thrives when you're actively doing business. Focusing on branding, marketing, or operational details is important, but not at the expense of serving clients and fulfilling your core mission. Understanding the Goal Behind the Goal: Why do we build logos, websites, and speeches? To attract clients. April challenges listeners to stop overcomplicating this process and focus instead on the direct path: connecting with potential clients and asking for their business. Ego and Confidence in the Way: Entrepreneurs often seek perfection in branding to feel “ready,” but this can be a mask for fear or a lack of confidence. April shares the story of a coach running a $400K business without a website or social media presence, proving that perfection isn't a prerequisite for success. Building a business isn't about how polished your branding is—it's about delivering value to your clients. April encourages listeners to strip away the distractions, focus on their core offering, and prioritize asking for the business. Your clients don't need a perfect website—they need your expertise.   Want to be part of a transformative experience for entrepreneurs and leaders?

One action small business owners can take:   One actionable step small business owners can take, as suggested by Kelly Walker, is to regularly schedule time in their calendar for personal activities that recharge them, such as exercise, family time, or hobbies. There are countless organisations out there claiming to do business differently. So much so, that ‘disruptive' has become a permanent fixture in games of buzzword bingo. But very few organisations are actually breaking the mould, and only the rarest exceptions can truly back up their claim of disrupting the way traditional business is done. Our guest on the latest episode of Climb in Consulting is one such exception. Simon Dixon is Founder and CEO of Hatmill, the UK's largest logistics consultancy, and no.1 in the Great Place To Work® list of the UK's best small workplaces. The 60-strong consultancy, established in 2009, delivers end-to-end supply chain and logistics support to deliver improvements across warehousing, transport, forecasting and inventory. Hatmill was always going to be different. It arose from Simon's dissatisfaction with the employee experience in conventional consultancies – the hierarchical structures, grades, pressure to achieve KPIs and targets, and the assumption that everyone wants to climb the greasy ladder to make partner. With Hatmill, Simon stripped all of that away. There are no grades, no managers, no sales targets and no KPIs. And while this approach may sound counterintuitive, it's helped them build a successful consultancy that's also recognised as one of the best places to work in Europe. In fact, in its 2023 survey, 100% of its employees said it was a great place to work. In this episode, Nick and Simon cover a lot of ground, delving into the details of how Hatmill has grown, and how it's managed (or rather, self-managed) on a day-to-day basis. You'll find out: - How Hatmill have built a self managed team and the key tenets that underpin their unique business model. - The reason Hatmill doesn't have grades or promotions, and why this has been a huge contributor to their success. - Why Hatmill eschews the traditional, corporate appraisal model – and why their only measures are whether employees are living Hatmill's values, and performance against other people's expectations - The reason Hatmill doesn't have traditional HR policies, and why, in an ideal world, Simon would prefer there to be no CEO at all. If you're looking for a fresh approach to running your consultancy, this could be just what you need! We hope you enjoy the show!
