Drummer Dennis Diken and New Jersey friends Jim Babjak (guitar) and Mike Mesaros (bass) bonded over their love of British Invasion music and found the perfect singer-songwriter-guitarist to join them: Pat DiNizio. The Smithereens delivered catchy, crunchy power pop, with a teenage vigilante movie introducing their unexpected breakthrough song, “Blood and Roses.” Hits such as “Only a Memory,” “A Girl Like You” and “Too Much Passion” followed. Diken, who named the band and propelled its attack, reflects on the Smithereens' rise, what rankled him about the hit album 11, how grunge affected the band's popularity, and how they regrouped after DiNizio's death in 2017. Will the Smithereens record new material with fill-in frontmen Marshall Crenshaw and Robin Wilson? And how did Diken become the drummer for a mini Kinks reunion?

Guitarist Jim Babjak, drummer Dennis Diken, and bassist Mike Mesaros grew up together in Carteret and lead singer, the late Pat DiNizio, hailed from Scotch Plains. The band paid its dues in clubs all over the NYC tri-state area from Kenny's Castaways in Greenwich Village to the Court Tavern and Stone Pony in NJ. As The Smithereens' fame escalated, they were in heavy rotation on MTV and appeared on The Tonight Show, Conan O'Brien, and Saturday Night Live. SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE I was born in Philly. It will always be my first city love – hell, it's right there in the name. I've been a New Yorker for over two decades. It will always be my favorite city. But for the 30 years in between, I was a proud resident of New Jersey, possibly the greatest state in the nation. Alright, some of that last statement may be hyperbole. As a teen I didn't feel proud. It took leaving NJ to love it. And greatest state? Nope, that I stand by. Whether you agree, one thing we can't dispute is that a turnpike-load of legendary & incredibly diverse music has come from NJ. Take the 3 artists that most people think of first: Sinatra, Springsteen, Bon Jovi. None of them sound alike. In fact, their only commonalities are their NJ roots & Italian heritage – which OFTEN go hand in hand. Then there's the Fugees/Lauryn Hill & Whitney Houston. Two more legends. And I have to shout out 2 of my all-time faves: Fountains of Wayne & Kool & the Gang. Here's a list of some of the greatest acts from the greatest state: · The Sugarhill Gang · Blues Traveler · Thursday · The Gaslight Anthem · Looking Glass · Skid Row · The Feelies · Dramarama · Donald Fagen · Naughty By Nature · Queen Latifah · Ice-T · Redman · Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes · Ricky Nelson · The Shirelles · Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons · Dionne Warwick · Sarah Vaughan · Count Basie · Wayne Shorter · John Pizzarelli · Halsey · Patti Smith · Debbie Harry · The Misfits & Danzig · Yo La Tengo · My Chemical Romance · Jonas Brothers · Gloria Gaynor Which band didn't I include? The Smithereens. I did that to prove a point. Most of these artists almost anyone can identify (okay, maybe not Dramarama & Looking Glass, but overall that's true). Ask most people who the Smithereens are & you'll draw a blank. You can say that about other bands. But what makes the Smithereens special is they were once HUGELY successful. They had a string of hit singles & albums in the late 1980s & early 1990s. Their songs were in movies. They performed & recorded with artists as big as Tom Petty, Lou Reed, Julian Lennon, Suzanne Vega & Belinda Carlisle. AND their music was awesome. Listen to “A Girl Like You”, “Blood and Roses”, “Only a Memory” or “Too Much Passion” and tell me I'm wrong. I haven't heard these songs in years and I can still recall them, because their dynamic mix of revivalist 1960s rock, punk & power pop is well crafted & infectious. It's a crime that this band has been so forgotten & that many of their releases are so hard to find. I have a soft spot for artists who hang in there for decades. It shows that music is their passion. That they don't let the ups & downs derail their journey, including in this case the 2017 death of their prime mover, Pat DiNizio. I feel so strongly because of my own career. Despite very little recognition & even less money, I've put out 15 albums, hundreds of songs, and worked with dozens of bands on the side. And since my band REC is releasing a new album later this year, it ain't ending anytime soon. The Smithereens are a great power pop band that show you can be singer/songwriter-y & even haunting in the midst of sheer rock joy. You can hear their influence in lots of my earlier work, including “Do You Wanna”, “Deal”, “It's Almost Over”, and this week's pick, which clearly has the jangly/beefy power pop pedigree: REC – “Beautiful Love” (from the album, Parts and Labour) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/musicisnotagenre/support

Any analysis of the Get Back documentary would be remiss in not factoring in insights gleaned from those who've followed in The Beatles' professional footsteps: working musicians. To that end, I assembled a panel of some illustrious pros who also happen to be hardcore fans. Three are returning guests; one is new to SATB:  Luther Russell: (Those Pretty Wrongs) - multi-instrumentalist Currently performing as one half of the duo Those Pretty Wrongs alongside ex-Big Star Jody Stephens, Luther has become a semi-regular on the podcast. As a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist/producer, he has discussed The Beatles' recording techniques, work as a collaborative, and the magic of Ringo's drumming.   The first two albums from Those Pretty Wrongs are being reissued as a double album set, while a third is due out this year. He will also have a new solo set out as well.    Arion Salazar: (ex-Third Eye Blind) - bass In his first appearance on SATB, he discussed Paul McCartney as an innovator, impacting generations beyond the 1960s. It was Arion who offered up the back cover design of Third Eye Blind's multi-platinum 1997 debut ("Semi-Charmed Life") which evoked the back cover of The Beatles' 1966 Revolver album. In early 2021, the bassist put together ensembles of musicians from bands including Smash Mouth, Smashing Pumpkins, Stevie Wonder and Testament, among others, to perform heartfelt covers of Beatle-related material for the first Fab4ConJam. He recently recorded with Flipsyde in Muscle Shoals for a pending release this year.   Pat Sansone: (Wilco) - multi-instrumentalist He waxed eloquently for over two hours on the Sgt. Pepper album on a 2021 episode of SATB.   Pat's radio show: Baroque Down Palace - a 2 hour show every month that centers on Rock, Pop, Soul, Folk music of the 1960s and 1970s that feature symphonic embellishments, or influence in some way from the classical music world:https://wyxr.org/baroque-down-palace/   Pat has released a 7" vinyl single ; a book of his photography, 100 Polaroids, was recently reissued.    New to the show (but not The Beatles): drummer Dennis Diken, founding member of The Smithereens. In addition to their work over the course of several gold and platinum releases, he and his band recorded a pair of studio albums and one live one honoring The Beatles. They currently continue to perform live, alternately fronted by Gin Blossoms vocalist Robin Wilson and recording artist Marshall Crenshaw (also a previous SATB guest), in place of the late Pat DiNizio.     He also records with Bell Sound, whose critically acclaimed album Late Music was released in 2009. Look for new material from both bands in '22.     Dennis's radio show: Denny's Den airs weekly on Wednesday at 2-4pm Eastern Standard Time.  Go to wfmu.org and hover over "LISTEN" then go down to "ROCK 'n' SOUL RADIO", slide to the right and click on "ROCK 'n' SOUL RADIO HOMEPAGE" to access archives and the weekly broadcast.

1989 what a year! Let's take a trip in the WAY BACK machine and revisit an interview that I was lucky enough to be a part of while I was a DJ at WPCR (Plymouth College Radio). The Smithereens (https://www.officialsmithereens.com/) were on a college tour and were making a stop at Foley Gymnasium at PSC. Long story short, no one wanted to do the interview and I was offered a better time slot if I did it...so I did! Pat DiNizio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_DiNizio) was a graceful participant and, looking back at it, much nicer to me than he could/should have been. Sadly, Pat passed away a few years ago at the young age of 62 but his music lives on and so does this interview. Before the interview starts, I take some time sharing some thoughts about music in general, the lost beauty of Cassette tapes, how thankful I am for my Parents love of (quality) music, the extreme fun of being a DJ at a College Radio station, how fortunate I was to be able to interview several musical artists and a few other observations...such as how my voice circa 1989 sounds like some cartoon character whose most notable characteristic was that it sounded like it was laced with massive amounts of Helium Laced and played at 45 RPM when it was a 33 RPM recording. Awful. However, I have not listened to this recording for 30 years and it remains a very fond memory and I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane as much as I did. RIP Pat DiNizio and long live the Smithereens!

On December 12, 2017 singer/songwriter and founding member of Power Pop band The Smithereens Pat DiNizio passed away at the age of 62. The band had always played Beatles covers in their set, but in 2007 they truly demonstrated their fandom by releasing Meet The Smithereens, a track by track interpretation of the Beatles 1964 debut album on Capitol Records Meet The Beatles. The next year they released B-sides, a compilation of lesser known Beatles b-sides and album tracks. Episode #86 celebrates the music of Pat DiNizio and the Smithereens with songs from these two albums.

February has never been my favourite month of the year, so this show was designed to chase away the winter blues and warm our hearts. We started off with a set of songs in honour of the new month. This weekend's episode of Austin City Limits reminded me what an incredible songwriter and performer Nick Lowe is, so we took a look at his amazing career for a while after that. And speaking of great pop/rock songwriters, Pat Dinizio of The Smithereens comes to town next week, and that's reason to celebrate and look at some of his great songs. All in all, a pop-heavy, but happenin' show for sure. Unfortunately the station's digital taper dealy broke down during TTBTGH, yet AGAIN, so the last half of the show is missing. Listen live when you can, because you just never know when that thing will go down...

We started things off with one of my favourite features of the year, a look at what songs, albums, and artists were most played in the previous year. After that, it was in the other direction, as we pulled out some things we haven't heard in a while, for a feature called "Where Are They Now," where we listened to some folks who seemed bound for glory and then, for whatever reason, faded away. Whomever and wherever they are, we thank them for what they've given us and wish them well.
