There are true fairy tales, once upon a time stories that exist because of coincidental happenings that change everything. We are wrapping up our series on ethical rescue and breeding with ethical breeder Lorelei.  She tells us about her breeding program and rescue efforts alike.  Lorelei explains how much time and effort she put into selecting purchasers, selecting breeding pairs, and building a strong foundation for her puppies through things like puppy culture. She also shares everything from why she started breeding dogs to some of her favorites, and even some of the most difficult parts of dog breeding.  We discussed some of the ways ethical breeders work together to keep dogs out of the shelter, while preserving the breeds they love.  Additionally, we talk through the good and bad parts of phrases like "adopt, don't shop" and how the dogs in our communities at large, can benefit when we have ethical breeders available because of the immeasurable knowledge they have, and are willing to share. Lorelei has been involved in the sport of purebred dogs since she was a teen in the 70s. Her parents had Russian Wolfhounds. In the 80s, she worked on a cutting horse ranch and had an Australian Shepherd and Schipperke. They used the dogs and horses to bring cattle in from the pastures.  In the late 90s, she got involved in Miniature Bull Terriers, and then Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and then eventually standard Bull Terriers.  Lorelei has always valued her partner mentor breeders because there is so much to learn from others.   In the last 10 years she has breed 8 litters and has 8 home bred champions and a number of Staffords competing successfully in sports.   She operates under the affix Ciera Staffords and Bull Terriers. Her main concern in breeding is temperament and health from a pet owner's perspective. She is a member in good standing of the SBTCA, BTCA, and MBTCA. She is the current Editor of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club magazine and Annual book. Lorelei also helps the Bull Terrier club with articles for the magazines.  Recently, she has been approved to judge Staffordshire Bull Terriers at AKC events. She is looking forward to adding Bull Terriers in the future. Lorelei did not get involved in rescue until 2010.  Prior to that, she had only been a foster fail. In this time, she has fostered countless puppies and dogs over the last 13 years. She focuses primarily on puppies but been willing to help wherever needed. She has gone to shelters to identify dogs, evaluate temperaments, and help transport.  She has also photographed and videoed dogs for marketing purposes.  She has gone to many an adoption event.  Currently she works with Bull Terrier Rescue, and I usually have a Bull Terrier foster at my house.   Lorelei loves to write and has written articles on fostering successfully, choosing homes, and contracts, and many more dog that are dog related. She also enjoys graphic, publication and web design and photography.       You can find Lorelei at her website: https://www.cierastaffords.com/ Don't forget to review, subscribe, and share! Martha Teichner's journalist career started in 1977, and she has reported on every topic you can think of. Her incredible voice and poised presence has been the vehicle through which we've learned about war, apartheid, pandemics, politics, and so much more. Since 1993, Teichner has entered our living rooms every week as a correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning. So, when Teichner's first book was published, many were surprised. It wasn't about politics, or behind the scenes at the network, or about her work overseas. For decades Martha Teichner brought us the world, but in her memoir, she brings us her world. When Harry Met Minnie is a “tail” of love and friendship. A chance encounter leads to Teichner's brilliant new friendship with a dying woman named Carol Fertig, and a love match between two bull terriers. They say that we don't rescue dogs, but they rescue us … and it often feels like we are fated to be together. For Teichner, the guiding hand of fate is evident from the first moment she hears Carol's name to the bonding of Harry and Minnie. And all along the way, this remarkable storyteller details how she came to understand the real meaning of love and saying yes to fate. Whether you believe in fate or not, if you believe in friends, and you believe in dogs, this episode is a must-listen. Pooches Who Peddle: Dogs as Corporate Mascots

Down and Back

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2021 23:35

In this podcast episode, we explore the history of dogs as brand ambassadors in corporate America's marketing campaigns. Simply seeing an image of a dog can instill feelings of comfort in people, which is why corporations use compassionate canines to boost their company's perception and peddle their products. Many of the most memorable marketing campaigns of the twentieth century included a dog as a mascot. And, research shows that the use of dogs online and in social media can dramatically increase engagement. They pose for photos, attend live events, and even give “paw-tographs” to adoring fans, but who were the real dogs behind the mascots of corporate advertising fame?   Bonafide Bits: Donning a diamond-studded tiara and collar, Lady Greyhound led a successful 10-year PR campaign for Greyhound Lines. 20,000 paper-mache replicas of RCA's spokesdog, Nipper, were used as store displays. A Basset Hound naturally represented easy-going, casual comfort for Hushpuppy shoes. The Bull Terrier who served as the famous Spuds MacKenzie was a female named Honey Tree Evil Eye, or “Evie” for short.   Featured Breeds: Greyhound Greyhounds are the essence of the dog breeder's credo “Form follows function.” From the narrow, aerodynamic skull to the shock-absorbing pads of the feet, Greyhounds are perfectly constructed for high-speed pursuit. The lean beauty of the Greyhound “inverted S” shape, created by the deep chest curving gently into a tightly tucked waist, has been an object of fascination for artists, poets, and kings for as long as human beings have called themselves civilized. Greyhounds are the template from which other coursing hounds have been struck. Discover more about Greyhounds at AKC's Greyhound Breed Biography.   Chihuahua The Chihuahua is a balanced, graceful dog of terrier-like demeanor, weighing no more than six pounds. The rounded “apple” head is a breed hallmark. The erect ears and full, luminous eyes are acutely expressive. Coats come in many colors and patterns and can be long or short. The varieties are identical except for the coat. Chihuahuas possess loyalty, charm, and a big-dog attitude. Even tiny dogs require training, and without it, this clever scamp will rule your household like a little Napoleon. Compact and confident, Chihuahuas are ideal city pets. They are too small for roughhousing with kids, and special care must be taken in cold weather, but Chihuahuas are adaptable as long as they get lots of quality time in their preferred lap. Discover more about Chihuahuas at AKC's Chihuahua Breed Biography.   Boxer Loyalty, affection, intelligence, work ethic, and good looks: Boxers are the whole doggy package. Bright and alert, sometimes silly, but always courageous, the Boxer has been among America's most popular dog breeds for a very long time. Discover more about Boxers at AKC's Boxer Breed Biography.   Bull Terrier Bull Terriers are robust, big-boned terriers who move with a jaunty stride suggesting agility and power. The breed's hallmark is a long, egg-shaped head with erect and pointed ears and small, triangular eyes that glisten with good humor. Coats come in two types: white; and any other color (including an attractive brindle striping), either solid or with white markings. A well-made BT is the picture of muscular determination and balance. There are four keys to BT happiness: early socialization with dogs and people; firm but loving training; ample exercise; and lots of quality time with his adored humans. If these requirements are met, there is no more loyal, lovable, and entertaining companion. This is the ultimate “personality breed.” Discover more about Bull Terriers at AKC's Bull Terrier Breed Biography.   Smooth Fox Terrier Smooths are quite similar to their close relatives, Wire Fox Terriers. Like their crispy-coated cousins, Smooths stand no more than 15.5 inches at the shoulder. The distinguishing physical trait, besides coat type, is the head: A Smooth's head is more V-shaped than a Wire's. The dense, flat coat is predominantly white, with black, tan, or black-and-tan markings. These cleverly made hunters are strong and sturdy, but never coarse and clunky. Short-backed and symmetrical, they move with the unwavering grace of a pendulum clock. Discover more about Smooth Fox Terriers at AKC's Smooth Fox Terrier Breed Biography.   Basset Hound The Basset Hound stands no higher than 14 inches at the shoulder but, with his remarkably heavy bone, powerful little legs, and massive paws, he possesses big-dog strength and stamina. Bassets are famous for a large, domed head that features extremely long, velvety ears, mournful eyes, and a wrinkled brow, which give the breed the look of a sad clown. Built more for endurance than speed, the Basset moves in a deliberate but effortless manner. The breed's scenting ability is uncanny; it's said that among dogs only the Bloodhound's nose is more accurate. Mild and agreeable at home, the Basset is stubborn on the trail and barks in a loud, ringing voice. Although they may not be wildly demonstrative in their affections, they are steadfastly loyal. Discover more about Basset Hounds at AKC's Basset Hound Breed Biography.   Bulldog You can't mistake a Bulldog for any other breed. The loose skin of the head, furrowed brow, pushed-in nose, small ears, undershot jaw with hanging chops on either side, and the distinctive rolling gait all practically scream “I'm a Bulldog!” The coat, seen in a variety of colors and patterns, is short, smooth, and glossy. Bulldogs can weigh up to 50 pounds, but that won't stop them from curling up in your lap or at least trying to. But don't mistake their easygoing ways for laziness: Bulldogs enjoy brisk walks and need regular moderate exercise, along with a careful diet, to stay trim. Summer afternoons are best spent in an air-conditioned room as a Bulldog's short snout can cause labored breathing in hot and humid weather. Discover more about Bulldogs at AKC's Bulldog Breed Biography.   Borzoi Borzoi are large, elegant sighthounds. A mature male stands at least 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs 75 to 105 pounds. Females will be smaller. Beneath the luxurious silky coat, Borzoi construction follows the ancient Greyhound template. Once known as the Russian Wolfhound, Borzoi were bred to be swift and tough enough to pursue and pin their ferocious lupine quarry. In their quiet, catlike way they can be stubborn, and training is best accomplished with patience, consistency, and good humor. Affectionate family dogs, Borzoi are nonetheless a bit too dignified to wholeheartedly enjoy a lot of roughhousing. The sight of a cat or squirrel on the run will quickly stir their instinct to pursue and fenced-in running room is a must. Discover more about Borzois at AKC's Borzoi Breed Biography.   For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org.   Shareables: Party animal Spuds Mackenzie was a female Bull Terrier named Honey Tree Evil Eye, or “Evie” for short. Even though Lady Greyhound served as the bus company's spokesdog for 10 years, Greyhound Lines had a no pet policy. Gidget the “Taco Bell” Chihuahua also starred in a Geico commercial.

New Dog Breeders Offer Hope for the FuturePurebred dogs need more, new, young breeders. This is the consensus opinion of our top experts in the field. Preserving our breeds and encouraging more participation in our sports requires the energy and enthusiasm of youth. So, I reached out to the Pure Dog Talk listener community to find some of these folks. This was my conversation with Sam and Curtis Brown about the breeding program they are developing in Bull Terriers (bonus, a teaser for our “rare breeds month” in April!). This was an outstanding conversation that gave me hope for the future. Enjoy the podcast! A couple excerpts are below. Continue striving for betterCurtis: “I'm the one with the puppies all day and I'm the one doing multiple C-sections by myself, which I never would have seen myself doing, and delivering puppies. So, it's difficult in that aspect. But when it comes right down to why we continue to breed, for me is there's two reasons. “The joy on the faces of the families when we get to send companion puppies home with them has always been a remarkable thing. Companion puppies that people just love forever. Our Delicious bull terrier family of everybody who we sent puppies to follows us on Facebook and continuously post pictures of their dogs as they grow and we get to kind of see them grow. “You’re like ‘well maybe we should have kept that one in hindsight,’ maybe next time we’ll think of it differently before we put it in a pet home. But as we go on and as we continue to breed obviously we want to continue to breed better dogs … even if we have an amazing dog or an amazing bitch like the one who we just had win the grand futurity at our Silverwood show this past year … we still want to continue to strive to breed better dogs, not only for our breed but for the betterment of our breed. … preservation breeding, continuing to do things and enhance the breed the best that we can, not just in type but the temperaments and everything. “So that's why I think when we continue to breed. Not just take … that one dog and then just run it until you win Westminster … or whatever the case may be. We have to continue to create the next best thing. … we go to the Silverwood specialty show and a lot of people are showing dogs that we've seen in the ring many, many years over and we're the ones there with all of these young puppies …” Family affair Sam: “It's an incredible journey … you're going to make some concessions in your personal life. Mostly sleep … but you're also going to go all over the world you're going to meet incredible people … we have friends that are closer than our extended family in dogs. … when you're breeding you know you're really doing something that's very special. It's not only special to you, but it's special for those families that are going to be getting dogs from you …“…it's great for kids … we do everything as a family. We go to the shows as a family. We raise the puppies as a family. We do the chores as a family. It is something that a family can do, that's not in an agricultural area. You can raise a litter of puppies in the suburbs, it's not a big deal … it's something that you can sort of instill some of those 4H type lessons into your kids. We always advocate for responsible breeding … but I think it's a positive thing and it's definitely a family thing, at least for us, that everybody can be involved in. My kids, they've bottle fed puppies and they clean up after dogs. I think that's really important stuff when it comes to our sport. I heard Pat Trotter say at one point ‘You know it's great to run around to get ribbons but someone's gotta be doing the cleaning up and the breeding’ and that's kind of where we're at with it.”   Support this podcast

Specialty vs All Breed Part 2: Identifying SolutionsOur experts are back to help us identify solutions to the dilemma of specialty versus all breed shows. Part one is available for listening https://puredogtalk.com/podcast/360-specialty-vs-all-breed-shows-pure-dog-talk/ (here). All breed shows offer a moderating influence on the extremes that can reign at specialty shows. They also enable judges and owners to see the quality of dogs presented at specialties. “The ultimate learning tool for judges is to get your hands on good dogs.”And, in a special opportunity, I had a listener contribute thoughts on this topic that I think are absolutely on point and applicable to this conversation. Welcome Tracy Dineley, Clandara Perm Reg, with her input. “I just wanted to write to you after listening to your latest podcast as this topic has been on my mind for the last few years and I myself have spoken about it many times and have also written about it.First let me give you my 411. I have been involved in purebred dogs since 1981 as a professional handler and breeder exhibitor. I have been breeding and showing Staffordshire Bull Terriers since 1984. I have bred more all breed BIS dogs than any other breeder in North America and more National Specialty winners in Canada than any other breeder. I have over 80 champions in Canada and the US.It is my opinion that showing strictly or mostly at one or the other, specialties versus all breed shows is actually detrimental to any breed. It divides a breed, usually not for the better, in two directions. In some cases, it has divided breeds to the point that they almost end up looking like two different breeds. All breed judges versus breed specialists have different priorities when judging. An all-round judge will judge the whole dog. They won't focus on one thing. They take soundness and movement into the equation. They may even refresh themselves with the breed standard. The breed specialist judge tends to focus on type or heads. They with forgive movement flaws and sometimes forgiving to the point that they will put up maybe a pretty or typey dog that is just plain unsound.  They might even focus on things that are an issue in their own breeding program. It is not always the most balanced opinion. In my breed I have found that many breed specialists will interpret the breed standard to suit themselves. For instance, the breed standard calls for a level topline, but many breeders say that level doesn't really mean level. I also find that many specialty winners cannot win at the all breed shows at a high level. I think it’s usually because they are not sound enough. Just the same as some top winning BIS winners who cannot win a Specialty. They are not typey enough. In my opinion we should all be striving to win under both judges. To have a dog that is correct and typey enough to win a specialty and sound structurally correct enough to win under all rounders at all breed shows .I think your speakers on the pod cast were perfect for this topic. I think out of the three breeds, Staffy Bulls, Collies and Bull Terriers, the Bull Terriers are the only breed that have it right. I believe you could take pretty much any specialty winning Bull Terrier and do some serious winning at the all breed shows even to BIS level.I think the possibilities of creating extremes happen on both sides and therefore are detrimental to any breed. We need balance. We should always strive for the best to be somewhere in the middle of extremes but having the best of both worlds.Thank you for your podcasts, I look forward to them every week!”    Support this podcast

Specialty vs All Breed Dog ShowsIn certain breeds, the judging of breed specialists and at specialty shows draws higher entries and is of greater interest to the exhibitors than the day in, day out all-breed shows with which most of us are familiar. In part one of this panel discussion, three exhibitors and judges from some of these breeds share their thoughts about why this is so. "We wanted to take back ownership of our breed. Generic dogs were winning at all breed shows versus the details of breed type that breed specialist judges would reward."Our panelists are: [caption id="attachment_7682" align="alignleft" width="300"] David Alexander[/caption] David Alexander, Bull Terrier Breeder, [caption id="attachment_7683" align="alignleft" width="209"] Jason Nicolai[/caption] Jason Nicolai, Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breeder [caption id="attachment_7681" align="alignleft" width="300"] Marcy Fine[/caption] and Marcy Fine, Collie breeder. Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Collies are all breeds in which specialties are the holy grail and all-breed dog shows are considered less important. Take a listen to part one of this challenging conversation about the "why" and join us next week, when we talk about the solutions. In this episode Donnie talks about the different histories of the Boston Terrier as well as the French Bull Dog. In addition to the health concerns of each dog. Finally, the nature of the two dog breeds is covered. You can find the article to this post at https://www.bostonterriersociety.com/boston-terrier-vs-french-bulldog/ Two of the most popular dog breeds in America are the Boston Terrier and the French Bulldog. They are both adorable, smaller dog breeds, and they easily capture the attention and hearts of everyone who crosses their paths. Yet these two breeds are often confused with each other, and as they are individual in their own respective ways, it's essential to acknowledge and respect their differences. If you are considering adopting one of these breeds, you will want to choose the one who fits best with your lifestyle. Where do the Boston Terrier and French Bulldog differ from each other? Let's take a closer look. Breed Histories The creation and history of both the Boston Terrier and the French Bulldog breeds are quite different from each other and span the Atlantic Ocean. Here are the stories behind the breeds. The Boston Terrier History The Boston Terrier breed was first bred around 1865 in Boston, Massachusetts, making the breed a true American dog. How the breed began lies with a Bostonian named Robert C. Cooper, who purchased a dog named Judge from William O'Brien. It is generally recognized that O'Brien had imported the dog from England, and Judge was a cross between a white English Terrier and an English Bulldog. Once the dog changed owners, he became known as Hooper's Judge. The dog was sturdy, around 32 pounds, and had dark brindle coloring with a white blaze on his face. Judge's head was blocky and square, and he had an even mouth. It is this dog who is considered the ancestor of nearly all true modern Boston Terriers. The Breads Making Up Today's Boston Terrier Judge was bred to a white dog named Burnett's Gyp, nicknamed Kate, who was owned by Edward Burnett. Kate was low stationed, about 28 pounds, had a stocky build, and a square head. From this mating, the path to the modern Boston Terrier was paved. The male dog born to Judge and Kate was not a particularly handsome dog, but he had the personality that the Boston Terrier would become so well known for: gentle and kind. This dog, Well's Eph, was mated to a female called Tobin's Kate, and historians suggest that their offspring were then crossed with the French Bulldog. That crossing formed the foundation of the Boston Terrier breed. Naming the Boston Terrier The Boston Terrier did not carry that name at first. The fledgling breed was called several names, including round heads, bullet heads, Boston Bulldogs, and American terriers. In 1889, a group of 30 owners of the new breed formed the American Bull Terrier Club, and they settled on calling the breed Bull Terriers or Round Heads. Fanciers of the breed loudly objected to these names, so to please as much of the base as possible, the club changed their name to the Boston Terrier Club in recognition of the breed's birthplace. Susan Daffron talks to Christina Nestor from Mike's Dog House about a dog named Duchess who is available for adoption. Mike's Dog House is a rescue in Florida that specializes in saving "bully breed" dogs, which may include American Bulldogs, Old English Bulldogs, Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, American Staffordshires, and others. Duchess is a 4 or 5-year old female pit bull who is a pretty "reverse" blue brindle color. She is a one of the stocky "low rider" type pit bulls and weighs in at about 50 pounds. Unlike many bully breed dogs, she's extremely laid back and doesn't need much exercise. Although she likes a regular walk, she is basically a couch potato. (If you're a couch potato too, perhaps you can be spuddy buddies together!) Duchess is a mellow, extremely well-socialized dog who gets along with kids and other dogs. She has no bad habits, and is spayed housetrained, crate-trained, up-to-date on her shots, and even microchipped. Duchess is just ready to go to her new home and eager to meet a new family who will love her. There is a type of dog called a bully. They consist of several breeds having a predisposition to be bullies (Pitbulls, Bull Terriers, Boxers), but the behaviors are not confined to one type of dog. They require "different" raising skills than many other dogs, including more work on impulse control and on appropriate body language. Having owned many different breeds, as well as a bully breed, Trish will give us some insight into what we need to do if we own a "bully" breed.
