Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) tells the story of Hushpuppy, a young girl living with her daddy in the Louisiana bayou, adapting to a changing world: her father is dying, the climate is warming, and prehistoric beasts are returning from the ice to haunt her. Aurochs, the titular beasts, were real Pleistocene animals – although the movie takes some artistic liberties. In this week's No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we're talking Smith & Wesson innovations through the years with Mike Helms and Vince Perreault. We dive right into it with Mike giving us a rundown of the .357 and .44 magnums that came from Smith & Wesson early on. We talk about the history of the .357, how it was created, and how every other cartridge today is still measured up to it, especially in the law enforcement world. Smith & Wesson get a lot of their inspiration from ammunition partners who approach them with a cool new round looking for a firearm to match it, with the 30 Super Carry being a recent example of this. Next up Mike shows us a Smith & Wesson Model 39. After a failed attempt with the Model 1913, Smith & Wesson pivoted and came out the gate strong with the Model 39. The Model 39 was the first 9mm pistol built in America. The Model 39 was the single stack variant with Smith & Wesson quickly producing a double stack variant in the Model 59. Although never officially adopted, the Model 39 does have some military history in a suppressed version dubbed “The Hushpuppy.” With a suppressor and a slide lock, it completely took the innovation of a double stack semi auto away turning it into a single shot but it was almost one of the quietest handguns ever made. While not as popular in the collecting world as revolvers from Smith & Wesson, Model 39's have slowly started to build a collectible following with prices rising on the market on GunBroker.com. Vince has noticed a trend in the “nostalgia bump” with many people requesting these style guns remanufactured in today's market as new. Closing out, we cover a really exciting topic for Smith & Wesson. After almost 160 years in Springfield, Massachusetts, Smith & Wesson has relocated to Maryville, TN. While an extremely tough decision, Smith & Wesson did their research to make sure the new location ticked all their boxes for just where exactly they wanted to be. With the grand opening party coming up this Saturday, October 7th, 2023, they sold out all their tickets in less than a day. Distribution, plastics, assembly, and front office are all moving to Maryville with some manufacturing processes remaining in Springfield, where there is generational talent at the revolver and 1911 level for Smith & Wesson. The maiden guns coming out of Maryville should start rolling off the line at the end of October. With over 600,000 square feet of state of the art space that is laid out for maximum efficiency, Smith & Wesson absolutely cannot wait to start their engines in their new space. Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in the Bathtub. It was an indie darling that went all the way to a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Benh Zeitlin's debut feature, set loosely in the New Orleans south around the hurricane, really has its beating heart in 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, the sweet, moral, defiant Hushpuppy. 

Directed by Benh Zeitlin and released in 2012, Beasts of the Southern Wild tells the story of a young girl named Hushpuppy and her dad Wink. Residing south of New Orleans in a community called the Bathtub, their way of life is threatened by an incoming storm, sending the residents on an odyssey and a fight for survival. Inspiring audiences since its release, it's a unique, hopeful, yet cautionary tale of the modern age.

A well-made BT is the picture of muscular determination and balance. Like their crispy-coated cousins, Smooths stand no more than 15.5 inches at the shoulder. The dense, flat coat is predominantly white, with black, tan, or black-and-tan markings. These cleverly made hunters are strong and sturdy, but never coarse and clunky. Built more for endurance than speed, the Basset moves in a deliberate but effortless manner. The loose skin of the head, furrowed brow, pushed-in nose, small ears, undershot jaw with hanging chops on either side, and the distinctive rolling gait all practically scream “I'm a Bulldog!” The coat, seen in a variety of colors and patterns, is short, smooth, and glossy. Bulldogs can weigh up to 50 pounds, but that won't stop them from curling up in your lap or at least trying to. But don't mistake their easygoing ways for laziness: Bulldogs enjoy brisk walks and need regular moderate exercise, along with a careful diet, to stay trim. Summer afternoons are best spent in an air-conditioned room as a Bulldog's short snout can cause labored breathing in hot and humid weather. Females will be smaller. Beneath the luxurious silky coat, Borzoi construction follows the ancient Greyhound template. Once known as the Russian Wolfhound, Borzoi were bred to be swift and tough enough to pursue and pin their ferocious lupine quarry. In their quiet, catlike way they can be stubborn, and training is best accomplished with patience, consistency, and good humor. Affectionate family dogs, Borzoi are nonetheless a bit too dignified to wholeheartedly enjoy a lot of roughhousing. 2912 Ricotta Crab Fritters Serves 8 Ingredients 1/2 of an 8-ounce piece Gallo Italian Dry Salame, peeled and finely chopped (should be about 3/4 cup) 1 lb fresh ricotta, drained of any excess liquid 1/2 oz finely grated parmesan cheese (1/4 cup) ½ cup shredded or lump crabmeat, shells removed 2 large egg yolks 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 3 tablespoons House-Autry Hushpuppy Mix Onion 3 large eggs, beaten 1/2 cup House-Autry Chicken Fry About 2 cups vegetable oil Method 1. Stir salami, ricotta, parmesan, crabmeat, yolks, salt, pepper, and 3 tablespoons of House-Autry Hushpuppy Mix with Onion until combined. 2. Line a large cookie sheet with wax paper. Scoop about 1 ½ Tablespoons of the ricotta mixture and pat into a 1/2-inch-thick disc. 3. Place 3 large eggs in a pie plate or shallow dish. Place House-Autry Chicken fry on a piece of waxed paper. 4. Dip ricotta disc into beaten eggs, turning to coat, and shaking off excess. Then dip into House-Autry Chicken Fry breader, turning to coat completely. Transfer to baking sheet. Repeat with remaining mixture, arranging discs in a single layer. 5. Heat 1/2 inch oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet over moderately high heat until hot, but not smoking (if you have a thermometer, the oil should be about 350°F). Place half the fritters into the oil, and fry until golden, about 2 minutes. 6. Gently turn each fritter over with a slotted spoon and fry until golden on all sides, an additional 2 to 4 minutes. Transfer fritters to a plate lined with paper towels using a slotted spoon. 7. Add more oil to the skillet so that the level reaches ½ inch. Heat oil until it’s hot but not smoking. Fry remaining fritters as you did in steps 5 and 6. Serve warm or at room temperature.

2911 Breakfast Trout ¾ pound Yukon Gold potatoes, cut into ½-inch cubes ½ yellow onion, chopped 1 tablespoon olive oil About ¼ teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt ½ teaspoon smoked paprika Freshly ground black pepper 2 ½ ounces smoked trout, skin pulled off 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 4 large eggs Preheat oven to 400 degrees. On a rimmed baking pan mix potatoes with onion, olive oil, salt, paprika and a few grinds of pepper. Bake, stirring a couple times, until potatoes are tender, 20-25 minutes. Crumble the trout fillet into bite-size pieces as you add it to the pan. Add dill and lemon juice and mix well, scraping up any browned bits from bottom of pan. Season hash with additional salt and pepper and cover with lid or foil to keep warm. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Gently crack egg into pan and fry gently until cooked thoroughly but not hard. Repeat with other 3 eggs. Divide hash between 2 plates. Ved du præcis hvorfor du griner når du griner? Kan du forklare præcist hvad det er der er så morsomt ved de scener i dine yndlings-komedier, som du griner mest af? Disse og mange, mange andre spørgsmål cirkler 69'eren sig omkring, for vi har nemlig en af Danmarks fremmeste komedie-instruktører i studiet, i form af Rasmus Heide. Rasmus er manden bag komedier som Alle for en (og to), Blå Mænd og Julefrokosten. Film der har haft en evne til at splitte folk i to skarpt optegnede lejre: dem der griner af dem og dem der ikke griner af dem. Sammen med Rasmus begiver vi os ud på en episk comedy-extravagnza, hvor vi prøver at snakke os ind til kernen af komedie. Det er meget højpandet, alvorligt og som Mike Myers siger det, lidt som at rode i sin egen afføring. Med egen afføring på hænderne, vil vi således også udnytte at en af landets mest indtjenende instruktører er i studiet. I, kære lyttere, har nemlig suppleret os med et hav af gode, relevante og ikke mindst kritiske spørgsmål til hr. Heide, som han besvarer med bemærkelsesværdig ærlighed og grundighed. Derudover anmelder vi Hushpuppy, Jagten og Rasmus "anmelder" Alle for to. Vi har comedy-tv-anbefalinger fra Anders og Reklamedude er i sit eget anbefalings-humør. Det handlar om Stockholms filmfestival i veckans Kino. Vi har pratat om utseendefixering med hedersgästen Willem Dafoe, försöker navigera mellan fakta och fiktion i call girl-debatten. Och träffar festivalens solstråle Peter Fonda. En av festivalens utländska hedersgäster är den amerikanska skådespelaren Willem Dafoe, som tilldelas det nyinstiftade priset Stockholm Achievement Award. I juryns motivering står det bland annat att han med sin trettioåriga karriär - där han spelat allt från Gröna trollet i Spindelmannen till Jesus i Kristi sista frestelse - är en av världens mest mångfacetterade skådespelare, som kan "hypnotisera en publik genom endast ett ögonkast". Och just de där speciella ögonen och det speciella utseendet var det som Kinos Thella Johnson bestämde sig för att fråga om, när hon träffade Willem Dafoe på festivalens första dag. En av favoriterna till att ta hem pris i tävlingsserien på filmfestivalen i Stockholm är Beasts of the Southern Wild - som redan tagit hem priser på tunga festivaler som Sundance och Cannes. I just Cannes fick Kinos Lisa Bergström en intervju med regissören Benh Zeitlin, som då fortfarande var ovetande om det kommande prisregnet för hans sagolika film om den sexåriga flickan Hushpuppy, som bor i en stad som vagt liknar New Orleans... men som i filmen kallas för The Bathtub. Den svenska filmhöstens stora samtalsämne är Mikael Marcimains Call Girl. En film som anklagats för att peka ut Olof Palme som sexköpare av minderåriga - medan upphovspersonerna menar att det är en fri fantasi med inslag hämtade från verkligheten. Kino bjöd in filmens regissör, Mikael Marcimain och manusförfattaren Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten för att prata om gränsen mellan fiktion och verklighet. Regissören Rufus Norris är en av den brittiska teaterscenens klarast lysande stjärnor. Han har skrivit operan Doctor Dee tillsammans med Blurs Damon Albarn och blivit hyllad för sin uppsättning av musikalklassikern Cabaret i West End i London. Och på Stockholms filmfestival kan man nu se långfilmsdebuten Broken, om en elvaårig flickas dramatiska sommar i ett på ytan idylliskt bostadsområde - där det finns mängder av hemligheter under den lugna ytan. Karin Svensson älskade filmen, och stämde träff med regissören Rufus Norris på hans hemmaplan numera. På English National Opera i London. En av dem som är med och bestämmer om Broken, Call Girl eller Beasts of the Southern Wild kommer att vinna priser i tävlingsserien är Peter Fonda, som är ordförande i juryn. Lillebror till Jane Fonda och pappa till skådespelerskan Bridget Fonda, och som trots att han varit verksam som skådespelare, regissör och manusförfattare sedan tidigt 60-tal fortfarande förknippas mest med filmen Easy Rider från 1969, som han skrev manus till. Där han i sin roll som Captain America, en sorts mc-buren hippie, far runt på en fientlig amerikansk landsbygd tillsammans med sin lika flippade vapendragare Dennis Hopper, som förresten regisserade denna oväntade succéfilm. Karsten Thurfjell träffade en ungdomsidol på bästa humör. Veckans Bäst just nu-tipsar från Kinoredaktionen är Nina Asarnoj som bland annat arrangerat sin egen Nora Ephron-minneshögtid.

Ben won Best Animation at Slamdance for the animated short film Seed, which he both co-directed and shot. Ben was also director of photography on The Hunter & the Swan Discuss Their Meeting, a Sundance short film official selection. Ben lived for five years in Prague, where he met director Benh Zeitlin, with whom he subsequently worked as cinematographer on the multi-award-winning short Glory At Sea.  They continued their collaboration on Beasts of the Southern Wild, winner of both the Camera d'Or at Cannes and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, where Ben also won the Excellence in Cinematography Award. Beasts of the Southern Wild is about Hushpuppy, a fearless six-year-old girl, who lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world.
