If regulation and licensing doesn't work, then what's the solution? How can we change things for the better? How to we mitigate puppy mills and accidentally bred dogs? In this episode I discuss my vision for how we can solve this problem and honest breeders are a big part of the solution. Learn more about the Dog Breeder Society
Would regulation and licensing help the dog breeding industry? Would it protect buyers and stop puppy mills? The jury is still out, but I'd like to chime in with my thoughts on licensing and regulation, why people want it and how it might work and where there would be struggles. In the next episode, Part 2 of this discussion, I will give my thoughts on a better, more lasting solution (and you're part of it!).

The conversation around dog breeders is complex. What does it mean to be an ethical breeder? What are the dangers of puppy mills? And what can we do as future dog owners to ensure we're working with the best team for our dog's health and happiness? With guests, Jeanette Forrey and Barbara Cartwright.
The industry association for dog breeders says demand for puppies is still high despite many going unsold online. Backyard breeding exploded in popularity throughout the pandemic, with prices reaching up to $8000 a puppy . But Dogs New Zealand is concerned people could be breeding dogs that don't end up with a home. The association's director Steven Thompson spoke to Kim Hill.

That vast majority of dog breeders do not breed responsibly, ethically, or even in accordance with minimum standards of rearing or even state law. Their unethical and even inhumane actions lead to health conditions that comprise a large percentage veterinary sick visits and emotional and financial stress to families that purchase their puppies. In this episode, Dr. Roger discusses red flag behaviors that clearly identify an unethical breeder, and resources to help prospective dog owners seek out reputable, ethical breeders. Good breeders may be rare but they do exist if one knows where to look and the right quesitons to ask. Two German Shepherd breeders have been banned from owning animals for almost a decade after keeping more than 60 dogs in what the SPCA describes as a "hell hole". Some were in filthy cages so small they could not stand up, forced to sleep in their own waste, and suffering from untreated infections. Others were tied on leads so short they could not lie down or had ligature injuries so bad they had to euthanised. Barbara Glover and her daughter Janine Wallace have been found guilty of 32 animal welfare charges and sentenced to 9 and 12 months supervision respectively, 300 hours community work and ordered to pay $40,000 in reparations. The SPCA says its one of the biggest cases in its 150 year history. It's chief executive Andrea Midgen talks to Lisa Owen.

Ante Lucin on How to Help Dog Breeders in War Torn Ukraine Ante Lucin, host of https://www.facebook.com/groups/784331345461256 (Talking Dogs With Ante), joins forces with Pure Dog Talk host Laura Reeves to share information supporting the dog people in Ukraine. “What we have actually tried to do,” Ante said, “is that we have tried to place as much as possible information on our Facebook group. We try to connect directly with the people who are still in Ukraine. Try to find out what is that they need. Ukraine is a huge country, of course. There are still places which are not affected by the war, but there are places which are heavily affected by the war. One of them is obviously the capital city Kyiv. There is a lot of lot of dog people in Kyiv. For your viewers who maybe don't know it, Ukraine is quite famous in Europe as a very professional organizer of dog shows. They are supposed to have the FCI world dog show in 2023. I mean their country has a lot of experience and a lot of good dog people. “Unfortunately, at this point, things are quite difficult because in the places which are affected by the war at the moment it's impossible to move. This is the biggest problem. There are still a lot of dog people, and there are still a lot of people in general, who would like maybe to go away from the war, at least children and women, because obviously for the men it's not allowed to leave the country. But unfortunately when this all started, even though everybody newspapers, media, they were talking a lot about this, but actually it happened like a surprise to everybody. “People who really managed to escape in the first 48 hours, they have managed. But the rest of the people are now very limited with the options which they can do. I'm really trying to connect all the people because I think that's the most important thing at the moment. We are trying to see who needs help, where they need help and what kind of help they need. What has been happening in the last 48 hours, I know a lot of dog people from the neighboring countries like Hungary, Romania, Moldova they were driving till the border with Ukraine and the people from Ukraine where finding some kind of ways you know to send their own dogs. “The thing is that there are unfortunately now a lot of people who cannot come to the border or who cannot organize the transport for their dogs to the border. I have read a lot of posts today where people are begging to find any kind of transportation, if not for human at least for the dogs. “I'm going to repeat it 100 million times, people are amazing when it comes to these kind of situations and in any country, in any border that people are being able to send their dogs, we find people who will go there and who will catch the dogs and who will put them in the nice homes and everything. And the same for the people. In my group there are hundreds and hundreds of messages from people from all around the world who say we can take dogs, we can take people, we will help as much as we can. “I go back to the fact that unfortunately now the people who are there mostly will have to stay there for some more time. What is now (an) emergency is the dog food. This is what I was talking with a lot of breeders in Ukraine I was talking with Helen who is the vice president of the Kennel Club, the dog food is a big problem. So what we are trying to see at the moment is we will try to connect with the Red Cross to see if there is a possibility to send some amounts of dog food with them. “(We are trying) to connect with with any people who will possibly go till the border and take (dog food) from there, because there are obviously still some men who are driving women children and dogs till the border. So, whenever we find somebody like that, when we manage to organize that, somebody takes the dogs, we try to send back some dog food with them. So, it's a lot of organization it's not easy but it's amazing how much that people want to...

This week's episode brings you the breaking news that a puppy mill breeder used by Petland pet stores was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and a charge of 2nd Degree Terrorist Threat. **WARNING - GRAPHIC DETAILS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE**Petland breeder, Campbell Bee, was arrested after police responded to concerns from neighbors about stray animals coming from his property. Authorities then discovered a horrific scene. Nearly 60 dogs and several cats were rescued from extremely cruel conditions at his property. Upon facing the charges against him, he proceeded to threaten to blow up the police department. While Petland pet stores across the country claim that they visit their breeders and don't use puppy mills, cases like this prove what we have always said -- that you cannot trust what they say to customers or to lawmakers. We all advocate for adopting from rescues and shelters, but many are shocked to hear that we also advocate for people to "shop responsibly." It's a controversial topic in animal welfare, but this episode focuses on educating about breeders who truly love dogs and are on the same mission to ensure that dogs everywhere are healthy, happy, and safe. Listen with an open mind as Kelley describes her "breeding program" and gives a real world example of how we can work together to take the cruelty out of someone's choice to buy a dog from a breeder. While many animal advocates would never consider buying a dog from a breeder themselves, many people in the general public will still choose to buy a puppy rather than going to a shelter or rescue. We simply do not live in a world where everyone will adopt their family pet, for a variety of reasons. This is why educating about "preservation breeders" is an important component of our mission toward ending puppy mills. Tune in to find out how someone might "do their research" in finding a breeder that is reputable and NOT a puppy mill. We also discuss the reason the Gingerich puppy mill rescue involved a few large rescue groups rather than many small organizations. Dog Trainers and Dog Breeders Working Together [caption id="attachment_8671" align="alignleft" width="270"] Kayley Paylor and her Azawakh.[/caption] Kayley Paylor, like many professional dog trainers, started in her profession after acquiring a rescue dog that had issues. She became a huge advocate for the predictability and reliability of well-bred purebred dogs as a result. Paylor joins host Laura Reeves to tackle the “elephant in the room” when it comes to dog breeders and dog trainers working together. “It's one of those issues where you don't even realize that that type of (animal rights) agenda is sneaking in because the line between animal welfare and animal rights activists is a tough one,” Paylor said. “People who love their dogs and want the best for their dogs and trainers who want the best for dogs, it's really easy to lose track of what is actually best for them in the long term. Are we going to let them suffer with mental issues when we could just clarify the issue immediately with a consequence once that is appropriate. “So, what I tend to see and what I ran into is, again, really well-intentioned individuals who get a rescue as their first dog. Mine had health problems, as is unfortunately common, and I didn't know that going into it. Epilepsy, dental issues, that type of thing. And some behavioral issues that come with, certainly, genetic temperament issues, but also just they didn't have a breeder that cared about the puppy, that gave them the solid foundation. “I dug into the behavioral issues and what I started to see, when I went through my apprenticeship, … I saw all of these incredible women who had these purebred dogs that were predictable. That you could understand exactly what was going to happen. And so I started to understand ‘oh, OK, you understand exactly what you're going to get when you get that dog.' I was lucky and I wasn't the only one. All of my colleagues that came in at the same time as I did all came from a rescue background. “All of my colleagues went that way, where we started with rescues and ended up with purebred dogs. Because if you rescue dogs, you have to understand you're not getting anything predictable. You don't know the background. “From a breeder perspective, I do wish that breeders had a little bit more trust in trainers … but it's just a breakdown in communication. Neither of them see all the good that the other one can do because of the bad in both communities. “It's just about getting those well-bred dogs in front of trainers. Even if you know what you're doing. Even if you think you know what you're doing, taking them to a puppy group class for puppy play. “On both sides of the issue let's just say R+ versus a balanced perspective, you're going to get people who understand dogs and their different needs and their different drives, and you're going to get people who don't.” Listen to the entire episode above and hear Paylor's insights on finding a good fit for a trainer to work with, training insights and so much more. Join Good Dog's legal team as we speak with Laura Reeves about how we protect breeders from scams and animal rights extremists, advocate for breeders and against overreaching dog legislation, and provide sample contracts and other legal resources so breeders can get the legal support they deserve! Guests: Cat Matloub, Esq. (University of Chicago Law School), Monica DeBosscher, Esq. (Harvard Law School), and Christine Liu, Esq. (Harvard Law School) Good Dog's legal team describe key ways in which Good Dog provides legal support and helps protect and empower breeders. Cat describes how Good Dog helps protect breeders' legal rights, including by providing support if there are issues with animal control, assistance with stolen photos, scams and payment issues, and help if breeders are being harassed. Good Dog also helps support breeders by educating the public! Monica speaks about how anti-breeder advocacy is damaging and how many times the accompanying legislation affects the way the public thinks about the good forces in the dog world. She describes ways in which Good Dog works to stop anti-breeder legislation through letter-writing campaigns and social media and provide ongoing education. It's important to remember that dog breeders are the subject experts when it comes to breeding - that's why Good Dog is committed to making breeders' interests heard so that when the government is facing a question related to dog breeding, they know who to go to. Christine introduces Good Dog's new Good Breeder Legal Resource Center, which is designed specifically for dog breeders. Good Dog provides free sample contracts that breeders can use and adapt for their programs, in order to ensure that the breeders, buyers (and their dogs!) are happy with the process of placing a dog. Cat and Laura discuss the importance of contracts in communicating exactly what the breeder wants the buyer to know. Also learn about mediation services, and why it can be extremely helpful to have a 3rd party assist with any sort of legal support a breeder may need. New Dog Breeders Offer Hope for the FuturePurebred dogs need more, new, young breeders. This is the consensus opinion of our top experts in the field. Preserving our breeds and encouraging more participation in our sports requires the energy and enthusiasm of youth. So, I reached out to the Pure Dog Talk listener community to find some of these folks. This was my conversation with Sam and Curtis Brown about the breeding program they are developing in Bull Terriers (bonus, a teaser for our “rare breeds month” in April!). This was an outstanding conversation that gave me hope for the future. Enjoy the podcast! A couple excerpts are below. Continue striving for betterCurtis: “I'm the one with the puppies all day and I'm the one doing multiple C-sections by myself, which I never would have seen myself doing, and delivering puppies. So, it's difficult in that aspect. But when it comes right down to why we continue to breed, for me is there's two reasons. “The joy on the faces of the families when we get to send companion puppies home with them has always been a remarkable thing. Companion puppies that people just love forever. Our Delicious bull terrier family of everybody who we sent puppies to follows us on Facebook and continuously post pictures of their dogs as they grow and we get to kind of see them grow. “You’re like ‘well maybe we should have kept that one in hindsight,’ maybe next time we’ll think of it differently before we put it in a pet home. But as we go on and as we continue to breed obviously we want to continue to breed better dogs … even if we have an amazing dog or an amazing bitch like the one who we just had win the grand futurity at our Silverwood show this past year … we still want to continue to strive to breed better dogs, not only for our breed but for the betterment of our breed. … preservation breeding, continuing to do things and enhance the breed the best that we can, not just in type but the temperaments and everything. “So that's why I think when we continue to breed. Not just take … that one dog and then just run it until you win Westminster … or whatever the case may be. We have to continue to create the next best thing. … we go to the Silverwood specialty show and a lot of people are showing dogs that we've seen in the ring many, many years over and we're the ones there with all of these young puppies …” Family affair Sam: “It's an incredible journey … you're going to make some concessions in your personal life. Mostly sleep … but you're also going to go all over the world you're going to meet incredible people … we have friends that are closer than our extended family in dogs. … when you're breeding you know you're really doing something that's very special. It's not only special to you, but it's special for those families that are going to be getting dogs from you …“…it's great for kids … we do everything as a family. We go to the shows as a family. We raise the puppies as a family. We do the chores as a family. It is something that a family can do, that's not in an agricultural area. You can raise a litter of puppies in the suburbs, it's not a big deal … it's something that you can sort of instill some of those 4H type lessons into your kids. We always advocate for responsible breeding … but I think it's a positive thing and it's definitely a family thing, at least for us, that everybody can be involved in. My kids, they've bottle fed puppies and they clean up after dogs. I think that's really important stuff when it comes to our sport. I heard Pat Trotter say at one point ‘You know it's great to run around to get ribbons but someone's gotta be doing the cleaning up and the breeding’ and that's kind of where we're at with it.” Support this podcast
