Bullsbrook residents impacted by a bushfire north of Perth yesterday are now under a Hazmat alert after sewerage wastewater was used to extinguish yesterday's fire. The Department of Fire and Emergency services says drifting spray may have dropped residual bacteria on surrounding properties. DFES Deputy Commissioner of Operations Craig Waters told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast they are currently investigating how the incident could have happened.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Erin Brockovich is probably the most famous name in Law in the world. Making a name for herself when she went up against utility company Pacific Gas & Electric and helped bring together the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in U.S. history on behalf of the people of Hinkley, CA who had been affected by polluted water.Erin went on to become instrumental in numerous other high profile cases, usually up against massive corporate entities who are using their size to get away with either polluting the environment or otherwise neglecting humans basically. Erin was out in Australia doing work with Shine Lawyers - whom she's been working with for over ten years now, in particular around the issue of PFAS, a toxic chemical contained in firefighting foam used widely in Australia between the 1970s and 2000. The substance was sprayed over defence force bases, shipping ports, and regional firefighting stations for decades. It leaches into the soil and surrounding waterways, causing contamination. In 1987, American authorities wrote to the Australian Government to warn about the dangers of PFAS but nothing was done. Research in the United States has linked exposure to PFAS to cancer and a dozen other diseases. Residents in many Australian towns, including Bullsbrook in Western Australia where Erin visited during her visit, say their dogs have been riddled with cancer and die young. They can't drink the tap water. They bathe infants in bottled water. There have also been reports of birth defects. Unfortunately, it is difficult to prove in Australian law causation between exposure to this chemical and disease. The people at Shine reached out to me to ask if I'd have Erin on the show, so of course I said yes. I'm terrified to speak about this kind of thing, so I know enough that backing away from it is not the path to freedom - I have to lean into it. So I flew my self on a carbon-offset flight down to Melbourne to speak with this incredible human being. Erin is as you would expect. Incredibly Clever, Blisteringly Fast, Tall, Powerful, Passionate and a Firehose of Fury.I get why she's good at what she does. Because if you're going toe to toe in a boardroom with a company that's got political donations protecting them, you'll want to have a secret weapon up your sleeve - and that secret weapon is Erin Brockovich. This one blew my socks off. Find her on instagram @the_real_erin_brockovich, let her know you heard her here. And come now to the beautiful Langham hotel in Melbourne to sit eye to eye with one of the best legal minds of our time, and one of the most ferocious environmental activists you'll ever encounter. Northern suburbs residents are gearing up to fight plans by a controversial rehabilitation facility to use a former convent to run the women's arm of its “tough love” program. Shalom House confirmed it purchased the Mercyville Hostel in Craigie so it can move its women's program from Bullsbrook, where it has faced opposition from nearby residents and the local council for failing to comply with planning laws. Peter Lyndon-James, Shalom House Founder told 6PR Mornings host Gary Adshead that the Craigie location will be able to help over 50 women recover and rehabilitate in a safe location. "I think the whole of Western Australia would agree that we need more facilities like Shalom but the issue is, anywhere else besides next door to me," he told Gary. "I'm trying to focus on 165 people who are trying to get their lives back on track - we have never had a police complaint or had ambulances on the property in the history of Shalom." The Country Women's Association WA has launched a petition for ambulance services to be made free to all WA residents. Barbara Atkinson, from the Bullsbrook and District CWA branch, the current cost of calling an ambulance is beyond belief and is calling for a change to inadequate funding for regional sub stations. "Calling an ambulance shouldn't be a luxury and many people that we know won't call one because they are afraid of the bill," she told Millsy at Midday host Steve Mills.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It could be called the whitest of white elephants. It was tipped as being a state of the art quarantine facility for people isolating for COVID. But it's just been completed, as the World Health Organisation announced the end of the pandemic is in sight. So, what now for the $400 million Bullsbrook quarantine facility which now sits empty? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There were concerns at the time of its announcement in August last year that the Federal Government's quarantine facility at Bullsbrook would be redundant once it was completed. The $400 million, 500-bed facility, widely endorsed by the McGowan government at the time, is now finished and has been given the title of Centre for National Resilience. WA Liberal Leader David Honey told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings part of the deal meant WA had to shoulder the running costs, with Serco given the annual $13 million contract, which equates to $35,000 a day. "I guess one part of it is, there will be pandemics in the future ... but there are a couple of opportunities ... one of the big issues we have in WA and Perth in particular is the issue of homeless people," he told Bartlett. "If you were going to do that, you'd have wraparound services there. "Crikey, leaving them sleeping under bridges and in the doorways of the city buildings in Perth and the suburbs, I think is inhumane. "The other opportunity is ... we've got a critical housing shortage, so if you want to get workers into the state, there's nowhere for them to stay, so there is an opportunity at least until people could find a permanent place to live."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A Perth couple has had a lucky escape after driving around with a live grenade in the back of their farm vehicle for two weeks. Leeanne Bosnar told 6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker about how she found the explosive in a pile of rubble on their Bullsbrook property. After throwing it in the back of the buggy, thinking it was inactive, the two were shocked when they discovered it wasn't.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A Woolworths worker who was stabbed while stacking shelves at an Ellenbrook store has thanked first responders after the “completely random attack”. Aveley woman Donna Marie Grocott, 44, was alone in the pet food aisle when she was approached and allegedly stabbed in the back of her hip by Bullsbrook woman Cassandra Hickling. While the 40cm fish filleting knife didn't hit major organs, pictures of Ms Grocott's bandages on her back and fingers reveal the size of the punctures. WA's top cop told Gareth Parker in his regular segment on 6PR Breakfast the random attack was "a very frightening and unusual incident" and one officers had not encountered before. Peter Lyndon-James, CEO of Shalom House is in an on-going dispute with the City of Swan in regards to their growing facility and operations that help people with mental health issues. Shalom House is claiming that the City of Swan is tying them up in red tape during development applications, in a bid to force them out of the area. "Our relationship has always been significantly difficult and it's getting even worse," Mr Lyndon-James told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live. "I've said from day dot that I will never ever elevate policies above human life and when our court case started about 8 years back, as Shalom continued to grow - at the end what happened was the new Government came in - literally running Shalom House out of the Swan Valley." "The Shire Mayor told us to go Bullsbrook - but even they did not want us there. So no matter move they do not want us." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Royal Agricultural Society of WA is offering its showground, in the Perth suburb of Claremont, as a base for families and their animals and livestock, affected by the bushfire east of Perth. The fire has an 80-kilometre perimeter and stretches from the north-eastern suburb of Ellenbrook, about 30-kilometres east to the township of Wooroloo. At least 71 homes have been destroyed and hundreds of people evacuated. Fire authorities say crews are working to prevent the fire escaping the north-west perimeter and threatening communities around Bullsbrook.

A bushfire raging in Perth's east is threatening lives and property, according to an urgent warning issued by the state's emergency authorities. The Wooroloo blaze an hour to the city's east continues to burn, with an “act immediately to survive” directive issued for more than a dozen areas, while some residents have been told “it's too late to leave and leaving now would be deadly”.There are reports up to 20 houses have already been lost.An emergency warning is in place for The Vines, Bailup, Ellenbrook, Gidgegannup, Milledon, Walyunga National Park, Upper Swan, Aveley, Wundowie, Red Hill, Belhus, Baskerville, Herne Hill, Bullsbrook, Wooroloo and Brigadoon.Residents in surrounding areas have been told to be on alert by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, with continued unpredictable weather creating a risk to suburbs.“You need to shelter in your home in a room away from the fire front and make sure you can easily escape,” the warning states.“You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you well before the flames reach you.“If your home catches on fire and the conditions inside become unbearable, you need to get out and go to an area that has already been burnt.”More than 250 firefighters fought the blaze overnight as hot and windy conditions lashed the area, with DFES spokesman Superintendent Peter Sutton saying the crews have braved “erratic fire behaviour”, according to The West.“We have a number of properties lost. Our rapid damage assessment team is working on that. But there is no known loss of life,” he said.“The perimeter of the fire is around 60km, so it is very large and the fire has spotted 3.2km from the head of the fire and crossed the river.”Inspector Sutton said houses in Avon Bridge Estate and Shady Hills were under “imminent threat”, revealing crews had little success overnight, but there were no reports of injuries. The Wooroloo fire is part of the Perth metropolitan area region plunged into a five-day lockdown due to the hotel quarantine coronavirus scare revealed on Sunday. The DFES has told anyone who is forced to break the strict lockdown to avoid a fire threat to wear a face mask and adhere to social distancing measures.
A former fruit packer is concerned about whether the award rate is fair after earning 67 dollars for a day's work. Gareth Parker spoke to Caprice - who was in need of employment and secured a position packing strawberries in Bullsbrook---she was told she'd be paid 14.6 cents per punnet. After completing training and her first day of work the 20-year-old discovered her pay was below 70 dollars for the day. She says other more experienced packers weren't being paid much more. A family on the Gold Coast received an unwelcome surprise when they returned to their car on Sunday. A man had left a note saying he had seen a snake go in to their car. NNS heard from people who had received surprises after opening something. John found a man in his car after a big night and Amy didn’t realise but her pet gold fish had jumped out the tank and ended up in her bag – sadly it didn’t end well. The guys heard from Mitch from Bullsbrook yesterday who said he has to put his mobile phone on top of the kettle to get signal. NNS wanted to know if anyone else has unique system in place at their home. Belinda’s husband needs a screw driver to open his car door and Erin used a credit card to open her front door. And listen to the podcast to hear the great debate over breakfast – the guys asked Jermaine to hit the café for over the road eggs. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
NNS BEST BITS! NNS called in the big guy for a rating boost – the one and only Liam Bartlett. He’s been working on some pretty great stories which have taken him all over the world. The Bullsbrook fair was on a few months ago and a bouncy castle which hadn’t been tied down properly took off, taking kids with it. Thankfully nobody was injured but I think it’s fair to say those kids will be traumatised for life. The guys talked about the birth of your childhood trauma. Alana hates birds and David has a fear of moths. And we wrapped up the show with nothing better than some maggot tea! Made my CJ Grant, she made the guys try it and they weren’t impressed. She swears by it and says it’s cleared up her skin. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
NNS ARE BACK FROM THEIR HOLIDAYS! The show kicked off with Isaac Hempstead-Wright also known as Bran Stark from Game of Thrones! He was only 10 years old when he joined the cast and hasn’t looked back since. He feels pretty bad about being carried through most of the series by Hodor – but luckily they are really good mates! Jamie Durie from House Rules was on the phone and he had a lot to say about decorating-naturally! He also let NNS know his furniture label has been going for 10 years. He told the guys he lives a very different life from fellow judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen who apparently has a butler…fancyPM Scott Morrison came in the studio ahead of the great debate tonight. He said he’s been a busy man but has met some awesome people along the way! Yesterday he had a shot at shearing a sheep in Dubbo and says it’s much harder than it looks. And a bouncy castle took flight at a fair in Bullsbrook with kids still inside-thankfully nobody was hurt. The guys asked what was the birth of your childhood trauma. Alana is terrified of sea gulls and Shannon is 26 and is still petrified of toy dolls.
