Rupert Soames has forged a brilliant career leading businesses through some of the most daunting challenges. But behind the decades of success, there's another story that Rupert has chosen to share here for the first time … an experience which, against the odds, forged his resilience. His professional journey has been defined by his unflinching resolve to ‘run towards gunfire.' … as CEO of commercial giants Aggreko and Serco through periods of crisis and now as Chair of the CBI as it continues to recover from a reputational shock.Given Rupert is also Winston Churchill's grandson, it would be easy to assume that his courage is more biology than biography … but that would not tell the full story. In this episode, Rupert talks for the first time about appalling abuse he endured at prep school and how those terrible experiences ultimately helped shape his wholly positive approach to confronting challenge. He shares his valuable lessons in resilience, decision-making under pressure, and the importance of learning from past struggles. But more than all of this, Rupert powerfully explains and demonstrates how trauma, instead of defining us, can drive us towards a more positive life.My thanks to Rupert for this conversation. This is a paid advertisement by BetterHelp. The company that’s run Australia’s immigration detention network for over a decade, British conglomerate Serco, has lost its contract, but not before helping build what’s been called one of the world’s ‘most extreme and secretive’ detention regimes. Across the life of the contract, there have been scandals, incidents of self-harm and allegations of mistreatment and disproportionate use of force. The federal government’s decision to dump Serco has been welcomed by advocates and former detainees, but with a new private prison operator taking over, there’s little optimism that conditions will improve. What would you call a company that does all of the things that the government is supposed to do but doesn't want to? What about a company that manages all of the British military bases around the world as well as the satellite communications, while still being in the business of picking up the trash, managing air traffic control stations, housing prisoners, and detaining immigrants? You would call this company Serco, and they have a dark history of corruption and incompetence. For almost 100 years Serco has been the outsourcing arm of the British government specializing in government services, citizen services, the defense industry, transportation, healthcare, and facilities management. They generate $5 billion a year in revenue and have been busted for fraud, reneging on contracts, and other illegal business practices associated with everything imaginable, including the UK's disastrous “Track & Trace” program. With the unhinged Left constantly screaming about defeating fascism all the time, one of the best examples of the blending of the Government with Big Business is sitting right in front of their eyes but they will never notice, even when they show up at their house once a week to take away their trash. Keeping profits, social responsibility, and public relations on an even keel is no mean feat when you're a government contractor. UK services company Serco employs tens of thousands across the world in areas as diverse as defence, justice, and healthcare.  Rupert Soames joined Serco as chief executive in 2014 and completed his tenure at the end of 2022. In this straight-talking interview, Fidelity International's Global Head of Investment Research Ned Salter hears about his ESG lessons and in particular the social component: could Serco pay their staff more? Yes, but they'd lose business. Should they carry out controversial government policy? Yes, if it's the mandate of a democratically elected government. Is ESG investing a good thing? Not in its more zealous forms, no. Hear him explain these answers in this episode, and why he sees public scrutiny as an essential part of the job, and then listen to Fidelity's investment team explain the significance of what's been said here.
