Watch this episode to learn how one social enterprise is advancing literacy through evidence-based programming that engages parents and the community. Camesha Cox is an Ashoka Fellow, award-winning education-sector trailblazer and Founder and Executive Director of The Reading Partnership (TRP), a non-profit that designs and delivers community-based literacy programs and educational resources. In this episode, she agrees with the adage "it's never too late to learn", but explains why literacy is much harder to master the older you get. She also rejects “acceptable rates of failure” and calls upon governments to support programs (like TRP) that work. 00:00 Preview 00:16 Introduction 00:40 About Camesha Cox 02:26 Camesha's backstory that led to The Reading Partnership (TRP) 06:55 The mission of TRP 11:16 What impact stories touch Camesha and keep her motivated? 14:55 How TRP is making a difference in the lives of families and communities 16:55 What are some myths and misconceptions about literacy? 20:45 How to make learning exciting when teachers are “competing” against the allure of social media and video games 24:06 How to get involved in TRP 25:35 What role does empathy play in the delivery of TRP programming? 29:23 The Inner Development Goals 31:08 How has Ashoka Canada impacted Camesha's work? 33:37 Camesha Cox's Purposeful Empathy Story CONNECT WITH ANITA ✩ Email purposefulempathy@gmail.com ✩ Website https://www.anitanowak.com/ ✩ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/anitanowak/ ✩ Instagram https://tinyurl.com/anitanowakinstagram ✩ Facebook Page https://tinyurl.com/PurposefulEmpathyFacebook ✩ Facebook Group https://tinyurl.com/PurposefulEmpathyCommunity ✩ Podcast Audio https://tinyurl.com/PurposefulEmpathyPodcast CONNECT WITH CAMESHA ✩ Ashoka Canada Profile https://ashokacanada.org/fellow/camesha-cox/ ✩ The Reading Partnership https://readingpartnership.com/ ✩ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/c-camesha-cox-med-18445555/ Season 14 of Purposeful Empathy is brought to you in collaboration with Ashoka Canada. Pardon me while I drop my first ever LIVE episode into this space! And, wouldn't you know it, my guest and I cover all the Conversations With a Wounded Healer favorites: community, connection, spiritual anchors, resiliency, the white-washing of mental wellness spaces, and the importance of therapists engaging in their own work (natch). What a joy to sit beside Camesha Jones, LCSW, at Sista Afya Community Mental Wellness, her gorgeous social enterprise located in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood. Founded in 2017, Sista Afya is dedicated to providing low- to no-cost mental wellness services that center the experiences of Black women. Let's chat about why centers like it are important––and, believe me, there aren't many places like Sista Afya, sadly. “Sometimes people keep saying this BS that Black people don't want to engage in therapy,” says Camesha. Ah, yes, the narrative about which communities are and aren't receptive to supportive healing, created by those outside the community to stigmatize and keep critical infrastructure like therapy from reaching those who need it. Camesha flatly refutes the trope. Camesha has built a center that's community focused down to its core. The name, for instance, combines sista, a term of endearment used between Black women, and afya, a Swahili word that means to be healthy, free from psychological and physical illness. In her own life, Camesha takes continual care to address challenges inherent to living with bi-polar disorder. She offers hope to folks, including fellow therapists, with similar experiences, modelling self-awareness and practicing sustainable self-care while running a successful business. “I go to therapy. I go to my psychiatrist. I take my meds. I do all the things [ ] and that's part of why I call myself a mental illness survivor,” she says, adding, “we're dealing with some of the same things, we're all dealing with some of the same things. It doesn't mean that we can't be effective in this work.” GUEST BIO Camesha Jones, LCSW, is a Social Worker, Entrepreneur, and Community Mental Wellness Advocate who serves at the intersection of culture, community, and social justice. Whole Communities.” This year, Sista Afya Community Care has offered 650 free therapy sessions and over 35 community workshops and classes that have collectively served over 200 women. The goal is to raise $35,000 to continue offering free mental wellness care to Black women in Chicago. They need your support to sustain the progress they've made so far. Sista Afya continues to remove barriers to accessing mental wellness care in their communities. Will you contribute to the annual year-end campaign by giving $50, $100, $250, or whatever amount you can towards our goal of $35,000 to help deepen the impact in providing free mental wellness care for Black women? The campaign will run the entire month of December, but make sure to donate now. This year is heavy, right? As soon as you think you may be recovering from the impact of one issue, another one pops up, then another one, and it suddenly starts to feel like you are all alone in a list of spiraling issues. Even if you know there are no right now answers, how do you even begin to get through it? Sometimes sisterhood is needed for the heavy load. Not to make it go away but as a means of self care to be heard, understood, and supported. This week, I am talking with guests Camesha and Jennifer about some of the current issues that are weighing us down. This conversation is to support each other and the many others who may be feeling the overwhelm of a pandemic, systemic injustice, racism, and more.
