THIS PODCAST IS FOR ADULTS AND CONTAINS ADULT CONTENT. Now that we've gotten that out of the way... _________   In the spirit of LOVE & BLACK HISTORY MONTH, I decided to go back into the vault. This episode is a retro conversation from, “The Catalogue”. It is one part of a series of conversations I had with some friends about the culture of dating in the Black Community. My guest Bianca & I discuss the shifts in dating within our community, as we recognize the MAJOR shift is what Bianca calls “THE NEW MONOGAMY”. We discuss some HOT TOPICS such as: polyamory, dating from a place of emotional ego, the conceptual origins of the “Strong Black Woman” & the “Absentee Black Man” and how all of these things created a shift in the way Black men and women engage with one another.    We laugh, dig down into our soul of wonder and get real REAL about some things that may make some folks uncomfortable. We draw on the notion that in order to heal – we have to get to the nucleus of the issue and the only way TO IT is straight THROUGH IT.   "GO WHERE YOU ARE ADORED. THIS PODCAST IS FOR ADULTS AND CONTAINS ADULT CONTENT. Now that we've gotten that out of the way... _________   Friends and Kin this episode is part two of a conversation about SELF-ACCOUNTABILITY. In the last episode or part one of this discussion we talked about that self-accountability is. We discussed what it looks like, smells like and just the flat out truth about what it is at its core. We also touched on what could be at the nucleus of the lack of self-accountability in certain communities. COMMUNITIES BEING ANY GROUPING OF PEOPLE - FAMILIES, FRIEND CIRCLES. I went over in particular how it can sometimes show up in the Black comunity and WHY... Agree or disagree - it happens a lot and there may be reasons associated with that behavior.   In this episode I dive more into how we are going to combat this and stop this behavior. I talk about deflection versus reflection and I share some information I found on Faith Evans' internet about how not taking self-accountability and deflecting is a form of gaslighting, narcissism and even emotional abuse. Tune in to see how we can all work on being more reflective and focus on being our best self in spite of mistakes and so called “failures” we may experience in life.    HAVE A HAPPY DAY OF GRATITUDE WITH YOUR LOVED ONES. Especially when we have to sit in what role we may play in keeping this kind of energy alive in our communities. It's a LOT to process. Don't take anything personally, cause everything ain't about you! Love you! I am talking about self-accountability AND the role that our cultural norms and communities may play in the lack of self-accountability. We have to navigate this differently. There needs to be a mindset shift, but this type of transformation does not come easily.   I dive into how ways we can shift our mindset to focus on OURSELVES and the present moment to really enjoy what we have. I talk a lot about how the philosophy of detachment can be helpful in focusing on WHAT REALLY MATTERS - and here's a hint… IT'S NOT COMPARING OURSELVES WITH SOMEONE ELSE. The real tea is that what matters is how we can be our best self. That helps us to be a better human for the people we love and care about, not for the people that we should not be concerned with. 098: Taking the First Steps to Find a Therapist

Wake Up Call

After my episode with Matt Thieleman about life coaching versus therapy, I got a lot of great questions about taking those first steps to find a therapist. Therapy is such a great way to work through blocks in your life and learn healthy coping mechanisms for anything you're struggling with, so in this episode I'm sharing the first steps you can take if you'd like to try therapy, and what to expect from those first few sessions.  Products or websites mentioned: Listen to Ep. 93: What Is a Coach? Coaching vs. Therapy with Matt Thieleman Psychology Today - Click the “Find a Therapist” tab and enter your location   Some key takeaways from this episode include: It's so important to address the things that are making you feel stuck in your life, or that are preventing you from fully enjoying your life. For me, therapy has been a great tool to help me face those things head-on. Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, but there are ways you can narrow down who you want to meet with. After you find some therapists you might want to work with, get on an introductory call with them. Gauge their vibe, how you feel talking to them, and get to know them a bit. If you get through the first few sessions with a therapist, and it doesn't feel right, remember there are SO many providers to choose from! Don't abandon therapy altogether, instead find another therapist until you find the right match.   Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that's me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn't lighting them up, and what they did to change that. Hey Friends & Kin!   FYI: THIS, JUST LIKE ALL EPISODES OF HAND ME MY PURSE, CONTAINS PROFANITY. THIS PODCAST IS FOR ADULTS AND CONTAINS ADULT CONTENT. Now that we've gotten that out of the way... _________   Friends and Kin in this episode, we are talking about something that a lot of people think they have down to a science, but folks are really clueless about & that is *drumroll please* SELF-AWARENESS. People do NOT think outside of themselves on a regular basis. Some people carry on like they don't even know the world exists outside of their realm. BUT IT DOES. And if we are going to be INTENTIONAL about HOW WE LIVE OUR LIVES, we must first be INTENTIONAL about being WHO WE ARE AND HOW WE SHOW UP IN THE WORLD.   I dive into how doing simple things can help you to develop self-awareness in your life and how to incorporate different techniques into your daily living that will help to develop self-awareness in your life. The real question to ask yourself is - WHO IN THE WORLD AM I? No, seriously - who are you in the world & who in the world are you? Literally & Figuratively. I even included a series of questions to ask yourself when you want to do an evaluation of where you are with self-awareness. It might be time for a check-in!     "GO WHERE YOU ARE LOVED. THIS PODCAST IS FOR ADULTS AND CONTAINS ADULT CONTENT. Now that we've gotten that out of the way... _________   Friends and Kin this episode is part two of my conversation with my homie & big time friend of the show, Kandis. As per usual we are laughing, disagreeing, telling all of the jokes - and of course, discussing dating and being single! Tune in for some good laughs but also some serious dialogue around what it's like to be single in 2023. We talk about some things that people don't really want to admit - like the freedom in being single!    Listen, being single is extremely freeing and allows you to navigate this planet as you wish. So many people are hellbent on being attached to someone else or something else, but there is a peace in not being bound. Not to say that being in a healthy relationship is BAD, however, there is something to be said about being free to be until we (the singles of the world) meet the person that makes us feel FREE in a HEALTHY, committed union. Until I meet him, I will be focusing on myself and becoming the best version of ourselves that we can be!   We Got To Do Better: “I DON'T BELIEVE THAT LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE. Because we are ALL affected directly and/or indirectly, whether you are aware of it or not. You are probably wondering - HOW AM I IMPACTED IF I DON'T HAVE ANY KIDS… LISTEN, we are ALL impacted. Think about it…    Traffic - when kids are in school the roads are so congested! Stores - the lines are longer, parents are frustrated with buying school stuff making them very testy and annoyed in stores & stores are always out of things we'd usually have easy access to.    But the TRAFFIC, MAN. The state of mental health care - at least in the west - is such that many in our community have a difficult time either locating a therapist that specializes in treating anxiety disorders, or accessing professional mental health help for economic and other reasons. This leads many to ask, "Do I need a therapist to recover?" While the help of a trained, experienced professional is certainly helpful, we have to look at what happens when that isn't possible. Lauren Rosen and Kelley Franke from the Purely OCD podcast join me this week to talk about this problem and to explore options, alternatives and possibly helpful strategies for when accessing professional therapy proves difficult. Disclaimer: In this podcast episode we attempted to address a problem we all know exists and to be realistic in our assessment of what options there may be for someone that has to "do recovery" on their own. We simply cannot provide you with a definitive answer as to if you need a therapist or not. That answer is based on so many individual variables that without knowing you there's just no way to provide black and white answers to that question. What you read, hear, and see in this episode is meant as general guidance and for informational purposes. Only you can judge what is right for you in the end.
