She received her masters in social work at IUPUI and has experience working with a variety of clients including those who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also has experience working at an eating disorder residential eating disorder treatment center and over time has developed a passion for helping individuals who struggle with eating disorders/disordered eating, chronic dieting, activity addiction, and negative body image. She completed an independent eating disorder recovery coaching training and certification through the Carolyn Costin Institute and is specially trained to support a client and the client's treatment team in making day-to-day behavior changes necessary for recovery. Lauren is passionate about helping others to heal their relationship with food, their body, but most importantly with themselves. You are going to love her!Today you will hear about...1. Common misconceptions about eating disorders like...That people with eating disorders look emaciated. That people with eating disorders always make themselves throw up.That its an eating disorder only when people have really OVERT behaviors.2. How do you recognize if there is an eating disorder present?-It's tricky because our culture has normalized so many behaviors that COULD BE a red flag, so look for CONSTANT...preoccupation with external selfalways trying to change selfdietingexercising trying to better themselves & become perfect defined by external & unreal expectations-Do you or your teen struggle with anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorders? They are more at risk to develop an eating disorder.3. So what do we do?!First look at yourself. There might be something going on with your OWN relationship with food that you need to work on.Let go of the shame of inevitable failures. Important to ask questions to understand where your kid is at BEFORE it becomes a disorder. Have “help me understand” conversations. Get help from a therapist, psychotherapist, counselor etcEducate yourself. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty is joined by John Gesumaria, LSW and founder of Differently. John shares his personal journey from corporate consulting to becoming a mental health advocate and social worker. Together, they discuss the challenges of navigating the traditional mental health system, alternative treatments like ketamine-assisted therapy, and how workplace wellness can transform employees' mental health. John provides insights on disclosing mental health struggles at work and shares actionable steps companies can take to support their employees better. About the Guest: John Gesumaria is a licensed social worker (LSW) and the founder of Differently, a platform dedicated to improving how we approach mental health care. Having experienced mental health struggles, including a bipolar II diagnosis, John transitioned from a successful career in corporate consulting to social work. His personal experiences have fueled his passion for mental health advocacy, workplace wellness, and innovative therapeutic practices like ketamine-assisted therapy. Key Takeaways: Alternative Therapies: John discusses how ketamine-assisted therapy is helping patients explore deep-rooted emotions, especially in trauma recovery, allowing them to open up and process their feelings in transformative ways. Mental Health Disclosure at Work: John advises employees to carefully assess their workplace environment and build relationships with HR before disclosing mental health conditions. He also emphasizes understanding necessary accommodations before approaching HR. The Importance of Workplace Wellness: Businesses should prioritize mental health support by fostering open communication and considering the role of stress in mental health conditions. John proposes the integration of empathy consultants, such as social workers, in workplaces to offer a safe, third-party resource for employees. Mental Health Terminology: John cautions against the over-normalization of terms like "depression" and "anxiety" in the workplace, emphasizing that managers should understand the distinction between clinical and situational mental health issues. Actionable Steps for Employers: John recommends a shift in focus from solely mental health to overall stress management. By addressing stress early, employers can prevent it from escalating into more serious mental health challenges for their teams.   Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Dr. Gutman is a board-certified pediatrician, and just finished a fellowship in adolescent medicine at Cohen Children's Medical Center. She will be an adolescent medicine attending at Columbia University Medical Center in August. Her clinical interests include eating disorders, pediatric gynecology and promoting healthy habits in teenagers. Her research focuses on the change in the quality and outcome of eating disorders on patients that presented during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Dr. Gutman served for 2 years as the co-chair of JOWMA's Teen Health Committee, and continues to stay active on the committee.  Dr. Gutman originally earned her Bachelors of Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in English literature. She completed post baccalaureate premedical program and went to medical school at Tel Aviv University. She then went to Jacobi Medical Center for a residency in pediatrics, where her research focused on sickle cell disease—back in those days, she believed she would specialize in pediatric hematology/oncology. In the middle of residency, Dr. Gutman realized that adolescent medicine was more enjoyable and rewarding than anything she'd experienced in residency so far. She quickly knew it was the field for her. _________________________________________________ This week's episode is sponsored by Toveedo! There she provides individual and group therapy, focusing primarily on trauma healing; perinatal mental health; parenting/caregiving; identity exploration for people of color; and neurodiversity. She is a graduate of RTB's psychologically sensitive yoga teacher training and teaches a weekly online class. In both yoga and therapy, Hannah and Room To Breathe emphasize accessibility, autonomy, and the importance of participants building an internal sense of safety. By prioritizing “function over form,” participants have the space to explore the sensation of postures and experiences without the pressure of achieving a particular form or outcome. Practicing these values in the yoga and therapy spaces changes the power dynamic in the room and can be a tool for healing for folks that have had their choice taken away from them. Hannah and Room To Breathe know that these are practices that benefit everyone, not just those that identify with a trauma history, and hope that both participants and practitioners can learn how psychologically sensitive care can benefit everyone.Consider supporting the podcast for $5 though BuyMeACoffeeSupport the Show.Support the Show.

They are also the founding president of the Dąbrowski Center and co-host of the Positive Disintegration Podcast. In this episode, Chris and Lian explored the topic of ‘Over-excitability', the body of work initially created by Dąbrowski. And together they explored the concepts of over-excitability and positive disintegration in the context of neurodivergence. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Over-excitabilities are intense and heightened experiences in five areas: psychomotor, sensual, intellectual, imaginational, and emotional - which seem to map to different neurodivergent traits, challenges, and capabilities. Over-excitability and positive disintegration are concepts that provide a different lens to understand neurodivergence and personal growth, and the intersection between them… in other words how neurodivergence might in itself provide a path to self-illumination, transformation and integration. Understanding and celebrating over-excitabilities, and the unique ways they show up in individuals, can lead to compassion and a better understanding of oneself and others, and ultimately serve our journey of wholeness. “Trying to give them as much autonomy as possible is really important. I always like to ask, ‘Would you like to have a conversation? Do you think that you can handle a conversation about advance care planning?' Or ‘What you would want someone to do for you if you're not able to speak for yourself?' They may say no, you know, and we have to respect that too,” Mandi Zucker, LSW, CT, executive director of End of Life Choices New York in New York City, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a discussion about end-of-life and advance care planning for adolescents and young adults with cancer. Highlights From This Episode “There's a saying in this field: It's never too early to have the conversation until it's too late. And like I said, when my children turned 18, we completed advance care plans with each of them. … Thankfully, they were, and they still are, healthy, and they didn't need an advance care plan imminently, but that's actually the perfect time to do it. So, we had this conversation when there was no emotionality really attached to it, and that's the best time.” TS 7:31 “So, trying to give them as much autonomy as possible is really important. I always like to ask, ‘Would you like to have a conversation? Do you think that you can handle a conversation about advance care planning?' Or ‘What you would want someone to do for you if you're not able to speak for yourself?' They may say no, you know, and we have to respect that too.” TS 11:28 “I like to use an acronym called WAIT, W-A-I-T—Why am I talking? And frequently, I talk because I'm nervous. I'm so anxious at such, you know? Exactly. Just because we have a little training in this doesn't make it an easy conversation to have. So I often notice that when I'm feeling anxious, I fill the room with words. So saying to yourself, ‘Wait, why am I talking?' And if you realize ‘I'm talking because I'm nervous; I'm uncomfortable with this conversation,' remind yourself to stop because a little silence is not bad. It actually gives the patient a little time to think about the question.” TS 12:25 “Some young adults are very on top of this planning. You know, I think it's slow progress, but there has been some progress in that young adults are much more comfortable than a lot of us older people in having really difficult conversations. So we're the ones that are afraid to bring it up, but some of them are much more comfortable. So we have to remember that each of these people are individuals, and they may be very on top of this kind of planning or feel more comfortable having the conversations than we are. So it's important that we follow their lead and not make assumptions that because they're young, that they haven't thought about their own death.” TS 16:44 “I think a great question to ask them is just like, ‘What is your understanding of your diagnosis and prognosis?' Because they may have heard it already. They may not have absorbed all of the information. They may not be ready to talk about it. So asking them what's their understanding—if they say, ‘I'm dying; I know that,' that makes the conversation a little bit easier, right?” TS 18:30 I actually think [it's] more important—the healthcare proxy—than the forms, because you're never going to be able to possibly come up with every single scenario that could happen. So you're not going to be able to document like, ‘If this happens, do this,' for everything—but having a healthcare proxy who you've had conversations with about what your values are, not necessarily about every scenario.” TS 25:19 “Whatever your value is, you want to be able to have that conversation with your healthcare proxy so they can speak—I'm not even going to say for you—I'm going to say as you, so they can really advocate for you as if they were you and making sure your values and wishes are respected.” TS 25:54

I have such a fascinating conversation for you today. A few months ago, I heard about something called the Theory of Positive Disintegration — a theory created by K. Dabrowski, whose name I was familiar with because of his bringing attention to the idea that gifted children have inborn traits known as overexcitabilities – and I was instantly curious. Positive Disintegration – what does that mean exactly? It sounded complicated, and good, but also messy. So I wanted to know more. That's when I learned of the work of Dr. Chris Wells, who is the founding president of the Dąbrowski Center and who is dedicated to sharing knowledge and resources about this profound theory and the psychology of giftedness. I invited Chris on the show to explore the Theory of Positive Disintegration with us, and fortunately for all of us, they said yes. And I will just say upfront — there is a lot that goes into understanding this theory and the implications it has for our differently wired children. So in today's episode, we are only scratching the surface of this theory. But I am so excited for the opportunity to share this conversation because I believe this fascinating framework has the potential to offer a new perspective on neurodivergence and mental health that is important for families in our community to explore. One last thing, this episode includes mention of suicidality and suicide attempts, so if those are trigger topics for you, please take care of yourself while listening.   About Chris Wells Chris Wells, PhD, LSW, is a neurodivergent writer, social worker, and Dąbrowski scholar with a passion for studying and applying the theory of positive disintegration. As the founding president of the Dąbrowski Center and co-host of the Positive Disintegration Podcast, Chris is dedicated to sharing knowledge and resources about this profound theory and the psychology of giftedness.Chris provides specialized consulting services to clinicians and educators internationally, delivering deep insights into positive disintegration and its practical applications. They also offer their unique blend of lived experience and professional expertise as an advocate and speaker for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Chris lives with their partner and teenage son in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.   Things you'll learn: What the Theory of Positive Disintegration is and how it offers an alternative perspective on mental health struggles What the five domains of Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities How the connection between overexcitabilities and the autonomic nervous system can provide insights into nervous system regulation How the Theory of Positive Disintegration fits in with traditional therapeutic modalities How anxiety and depression might be signs of growth and development   Resources mentioned: Chris Well's substack Positive Integration The Dabrowski Center The Positive Disintegration Podcast Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities “Mellow Out,” They Say.
