Daisie is a black Labrador retriever, who works as an "ambassadog" for the assistance dog charity, Canine Partners. Daisie and her handler, Ellie Chadwick, demonstrate to the general public the various tasks that an assistance may do to support its disabled human handler. They do this on a voluntary basis at weekends at country shows and other events all over the country, as part of the charity's fundraising efforts. Ellie's day job is also within Canine Partners, and she has spent her career to date working with and training support dogs. This is linked to the last Dogs with Jobs episode, which focused on the canine/human partnership in action - that of eight year old golden retriever, Darcey and her human partner, Wren Rawlings. They have been partnered for seven years, and Wren gives an articulate and nuanced account of their relationship and how it has evolved and changed his life. By coincidence, Ellie, whom we hear from in this episode, is the Canine Partners liaison link with Darcey and Wren - making this episode a companion piece. Recorded at the South Downs Show, 2024. More detail and photos at shineradio.uk/dogswithjobs. Find out more about Canine Partners - from puppy walking to assistance dogs. Darcey, the golden Labrador retriever has been partnered with illustrator and teaching assistant, Wren Rawlings for over six years. Wren explains to presenter Kate Fairweather what Darcey does for him and how the partnership has seen him through a roller coaster seven years. Having had pretty normal health through his childhood and teenage years, Wren was struck with life-altering illness when he was a university student, which left him disabled. The partnership is one of Canine Partners' many successes: Wren starts a teaching job in September and is getting married in a month after that - with Darcey as ring bearer, at the heart of the ceremony in October. It's a life affirming tale of triumph over adversity. Darcey was trained specifically for Wren by Canine Partners, the support dog charity. More detail and photos at shineradio.uk/dogswithjobs. Kirstin Downie, Director of Development and Communications, and Taylor Kulp, Volunteer and a Partner to Laurel, discussed the mission of Canine Partners For Life, to provide trained service and companion dogs for people with physical or developmental disabilities. They offer Service dogs, highly trained dogs who follow their partner everywhere, and Companion dogs, who offer emotional support and comfort. The CP dog training begins as soon as possible, newborns are socialized by volunteers, then live with a volunteer who teaches them the basics and gets the dog used to people and different environments. Canine Partners then works with six area prisons, employing inmates to provide the constant contact and intense training to develop the dog's skills; some may be able to help with clothing and doing chores such as retrieving items, others may be sensitive enough to become Medic Alert companions to help their human partner with seizures, or heart or diabetic crisis's. Taylor talked about her journey to meeting Laurel, with a five year wait before getting matched, she became a volunteer to help with the dogs. Taylor described her needs and how Laurel is able to help her with laundry, get her a bottle of water from the fridge, help her stay steady as she walks and performing many more everyday acts that give her an independence she didn't think possible. Their services are free, supported by donations and grants, with training for each dog at over $32,000. Learn more at their annual Fall Festival September 17th from Noon to 4 at their Cochranville training facility. There will be food and entertainment, dog demonstrations and tours, as well as Cow BINGO, buy a random square on the field and if it's ‘marked' you can win the big cash prize. Talk ON! Juniors and Canine PartnersAs part of Pure Dog Talk’s commitment to engaging conversations, modeling appropriate dialogue and encouraging thoughtful discussion, we are bringing you two sides of the currently white-hot topic in the dog world: AKC’s pilot program to allow junior handlers to exhibit Canine Partners in Junior Showmanship classes. From https://dognews.com/current-issue (Dog News):At its January meeting, the American Kennel Club board of directors green-lighted a proposal from the Delegate Junior Sub-Committee and AKC staff to allow non-purebreds to be exhibited in Junior Showmanship. The AKC pilot program is modeled after the rules used in 4-H, where mixed breeds are permitted. In order to compete, dogs must have an AKC Canine Partner number and meet the ownership eligibility criteria. Juniors will indicate the breed that the dog is being exhibited as on the entry form. So, for example, a dog entered as a Golden Retriever mix would be presented in the same way as a purebred Golden. The rationale for allowing mixed breeds in Junior Showmanship is to provide an opportunity for a wider range of youngsters to participate in the sport of dogs, and give them an opportunity to learn, practice and improve their handling skills, as well as find mentors. This pilot program will go into effect on July 1, 2021, and continue for 18 months before it is assessed in 2022. It is limited to all-breed shows or events holding all-breed Juniors.Predictably, this topic has engendered heated discussion amongst the children and adults who populate this arena. Sadly, many of those conversations have devolved into the 21st century curse of ugly discourse. As an antidote to this, we’re bringing you two weeks of conversation, devil’s advocate positions and insight from two perspectives in this debate. Listeners may or may not agree with one “side” or the other. But I firmly believe that until we *hear* one another, we can’t make progress … in anything. Feel free to share your thoughts on the Pure Dog Talk FB page, or here in the comments. But rest assured, ANY ugliness, name calling or other inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. Be passionate AND polite. Today, Jody Davidson, long time Juniors coach and advocate, along with Bevin Towell, junior showmanship exhibitor, join host and moderator Laura Reeves to make the case for their position. Next week we are joined by 4H leader and advocate Sarah Gardner for the “rebuttal.” As always, talk ON! Support this podcast
