By scrolling down, you will find a text in English. The conversation with Jakub Jozéf Orlínski starts at after about 36 minutes. Händels work is deeply political, already 300 years. Händels operas show how rulers dominate their age and world, how to be masters of wisdom, mildness and justice. But no less how cruel and merciless they can be, how they do not shrink to destroy people, fool and ruin them. These weeks Amsterdam is 'the George Frederic Handel capital of Europe'. Most of all thanks to the spectacular musical debut of a young global Baroque-star who will sing such a cunning, cruel and powerful ruler. Julius Caesar, no less. With worldwide recognized Polish countertenor, Jakub Józef Orliński, the hosts of the podcast 'Trusted Sources' look for the many layers of the fabulous music of Händel (1685 - 1759). His "Giulio Cesare in Eigtto' is an opera as a diplomatic summit of two political animals of the Ancient World, Cleopatra and Ceasar. A cynical, noble and cruel tale where power, intrigue and justice are combating for primacy in the geopolitical reality of the day. Like with us, now, here, in the present. Orlínski tells about his take on 'Cesare', the victor and exploiter of immensely rich Egypt. And the political, military and amorous conqueror of its Queen. Cleopatra proofs to be no less a political pro, having a cunning agenda of her own. In aria's and duets these two discover each others ambitions, interests, charms and ruthlessness. As if in Mar-a-Lago or in Davos they strike a deal in Amsterdams Concertgebouw. He makes her Pharao instead of her cruel brother, she bears him the dynastic successor he lacks. In the National Opera Jakub Józef Orliński also sings the naïve prince Athamas, whose exuberant 'Royal Wedding' is ruined by merciless 'divine intervention' of Jove, king of the Gods of Olympus. Is this real or a nightmare of his bride Semele? Is her dream of a God as Lover a way to escape, even as this destroys herself and Athamas' hope of love? Händels operas again and again adress the dilemmas of power, cruelty, lust, mercy and hope for humanity. They are filled with Putins, Melania's, Berlusconi's, Ursula von der Leyens, with you and me. Talking with Orlínski is sharing wonderful stories of his adventures on a world stage. His live role at the Olympics in Paris, watched by an audience of billions around the world. But getting soaking wet there while breakdancing through a French Renaissance aria. His bike in Amsterdam. His ambitions as "almost an archeologist of music", going through archives to dig up unknown diamonds of Baroque music, forgotten over 300 years. The young Pole is a deeply dedicated artist and we can only wish him to entrance audiences for many years with his focus on discoveries and a fresh approach to timeless art. *** Verder kijken Jakub Józef Orliński & Ensemble Fantasticus - Händel - Semele: Your Tuneful Voice | Podium Klassiek Jakub Józef Orliński - He Was Despised (Händel's Messiah) Jakub Józef Orlínski - Händel - Ombra mai fu Jakub Józef Orliński – Händel: "Pena tiranna" (Amadigi di Gaula) Jakub Józef Orlínski - Viens, Hymen - opening Olympische Spelen Parijs 2024 *** Verder luisteren 387 - Niets is zó politiek als opera - 100 jaar Maria Callas207 - Zomer 2021: Boekentips met Händel in London, the making of a genius43 - Kleine Mozart aan het Binnenhof in 1765346 - Beethoven: Alle Menschen werden Brüder!498 - Gustav Mahler en zijn tweede stad Amsterdam531 - Muziek en tirannie: de schrijnende actualiteit van Dmitri Sjostakovitsj 305 - Andrea Wulf, Hoe rebelse genieën eeuwen later nog ons denken, cultuur en politiek beïnvloeden488 - Het Congres van Wenen (1814-1815) als muzikaal feest én briljant machtsspel373 - Nederland en België: de scheiding die niemand wilde Hoe een opera België van Nederland afscheurde 200 - De Heerser: Machiavelli's lessen zijn nog altijd actueel*** Tijdlijn 00:00:00 – Deel 1: Georg Friedrich Händel 00:36:26 – Deel 2: Gesprek met Jakub Józef Orliński 01:07:05 – Deel 3: Gesprek met Jakub Józef Orliński 01:25:50 – Einde See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It might at first sound like it would be nice to be the lover of the king of the Olympian gods, attended by divine spirits, and living in a luxurious palace among the clouds.  But this happily-ever-after turns sour after Princess Semele asks Jupiter for the gift of immortality.  After a bit of intrigue amongst the gods–not least among them Jupiter's resourceful and ruthless wife Juno–disaster strikes the princess Semele and her dreams are reduced to ashes. An “English opera” from the later career of Baroque master, George Frideric Handel, Semele teems with engaging arias as well as sumptuous choral pieces. Inspired by a tale told by Ovid, Handel and his librettist, William Congreve crafted a work of art that beguiles and entertains supremely. Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Adam Minihan are joined by Evan Amato of Rewire the West to discuss Book Five of Odyssey: Odysseus escapes Calypso's Island.Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com for a written guide to the Odyssey. A couple questions from the guide: 28. What happens in book five?King Odysseus is trapped on Calypso's island. Zeus, at Athena's pleading, agrees to two proposals: first, Odysseus may leave the captivity of Calypso; and second, Athena may help Telemachus escape the trap set by the suitors (5.24). Hermes, the messenger god, goes and tells Calypso that it is Zeus' will that Odysseus be set free upon a make-shift raft, and Calypso, though upset, acquiesces to the will of Zeus (5.125, 176).[1] She tells Odysseus he may leave, and he has her promise she is not plotting some new harm against him (5.202). After four days of working on the raft, Odysseus sets sail on the fifth with gifts and provisions from Calypso (5.288).Poseidon, who is returning from Ethiopia, sees Odysseus has left the island and, “it made his fury boil even more” (5.313). Poseidon sends a storm to sink Odysseus (5.321). As he's being battered by the waves, a goddess of the sea, Ino, pities Odysseus, and tells him to strip off his clothes, tie her scarf around his waist, and swim for land (5.377). Poseidon smashes the raft to pieces (5.403), and Odysseus, with the help of Athena, makes it to the shore (5.471). The book ends with Odysseus falling asleep beneath two olive trees (5.544).[2] 29. Why does Odysseus refuse Calypso's offer of immortality?Calypso tells Hermes that she has offered immortality to Odysseus (5.151), and again makes the offer after Odysseus knows he's free to leave the island (5.230). How can Odysseus refuse immortality? How can a mortal man refuse an immortal life with a beautiful goddess? A subtle clue is found in the opening of book five. It does not repeat the typical line of Dawn and her rosy fingers but instead invokes Dawn's lover, Tithonus (5.01).[3] It is said that Dawn (Eos) asked Zeus to make her mortal lover, Tithonus, immortal, and Zeus agreed—but Zeus did not grant Tithonus immortal youth. Thus, Tithonus, immortal, continued to age until he “became an old shriveled creature little more than a voice.”[4] Tithonus attempts to graft onto human nature something that is unnatural to it: immortality. As Dr. Patrick Deneen observes: “Tithonus accepts what is unacceptable for mortals to attain, but which is nevertheless clearly tempting to normal mortal desires.”[5]One aspect of the unnaturalness of immortality in man is the necessity for the possibility of death to achieve glory (kleos). It is in facing death that man achieves renown. Without death, what is man? Furthermore, observe how those who are without death, the immortal gods, are presented: imploded personalities, obsessive, petty, and narcissistic. The sinews between man, death, and glory are one to observe, as the story of Odysseus continues to develop.Similarly to Tithonus, we should observe Homer references the goddess Ino who was “a mortal woman once” (5.367). Ino, the sister of Semele, was driven mad by Hera, and she jumped into the sea with her son in her arms. She...

fWotD Episode 2645: Homeric Hymns Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 1 August 2024 is Homeric Hymns. The Homeric Hymns (Ancient Greek: Ὁμηρικοὶ ὕμνοι, romanized: Homērikoì húmnoi) are a collection of thirty-three ancient Greek hymns and one epigram. The hymns praise deities of the Greek pantheon and retell mythological stories, often involving a deity's birth, their acceptance among the gods on Mount Olympus, or the establishment of their cult. In antiquity, the hymns were generally, though not universally, attributed to the poet Homer: modern scholarship has established that most date to the seventh and sixth centuries BCE, though some are more recent and the latest, the Hymn to Ares, may have been composed as late as the fifth century CE.The Homeric Hymns share compositional similarities with the Iliad and the Odyssey, also traditionally attributed to Homer. They share the same artificial literary dialect of Greek, are composed in dactylic hexameter, and make use of short, repeated phrases known as formulae. It is unclear how far writing, as opposed to oral composition, was involved in their creation. They may initially have served as preludes to the recitation of longer poems, and have been performed, at least originally, by singers accompanying themselves on a lyre or other stringed instrument. Performances of the hymns may have taken place at sympotic banquets, religious festivals and royal courts. There are references to the Homeric Hymns in Greek poetry from around 600 BCE; they appear to have been used as educational texts by the early fifth century BCE, and to have been collected into a single corpus after the third century CE. Their influence on Greek literature and art was relatively small until the third century BCE, when they were used extensively by Alexandrian poets including Callimachus, Theocritus and Apollonius of Rhodes. They were also an influence on Roman poets, such as Lucretius, Catullus, Virgil, Horace and Ovid. In late antiquity (c. 200 – c. 600 CE), they influenced both pagan and Christian literature, and their collection as a corpus probably dates to this period. They were comparatively neglected during the succeeding Byzantine period (that is, until 1453), but continued to be copied in manuscripts of Homeric poetry; all the surviving manuscripts of the hymns date to the fifteenth century. They were also read and emulated widely in fifteenth-century Italy, and indirectly influenced Sandro Botticelli's painting The Birth of Venus. The Homeric Hymns were first published in print by Demetrios Chalkokondyles in 1488–1489. George Chapman made the first English translation of them in 1624. Part of their text was incorporated, via a 1710 translation by William Congreve, into George Frideric Handel's 1744 musical drama Semele. The rediscovery of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter in 1777 led to a resurgence of European interest in the hymns. In the arts, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe used the Hymn to Demeter as an inspiration for his 1778 melodrama Proserpina. Their textual criticism progressed considerably over the nineteenth century, particularly in German scholarship, though the text continued to present substantial difficulties into the twentieth. The Homeric Hymns were also influential on the English Romantic poets of the early nineteenth century, particularly Leigh Hunt, Thomas Love Peacock and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

One of the UK's most popular vocalists and broadcasters, Aled Jones MBE, today announces the release of his brand-new album which not only celebrates 40 years in show business but reveals some previously unreleased tracks, recently unearthed by Aled himself. Whilst visiting his family home in Anglesey earlier this year, Aled began reminiscing over the 40 years of memorabilia his parents have collected throughout his career. They literally had everything, even a collection of multi-coloured shirts and bow ties. Aled's mother explained they had been handmade for him by a BBC employee for a series he made in 1983, at the age of 13. This prompted Aled to go and find the original programme. He began to go through the footage and discovered recordings, which have never been released or even heard since the original broadcast 40 years ago. The album includes brand new arrangements of those classics including Ave Maria and Bright Eyes.Aptly titled, ‘One Voice – Full Circle', the new record is the fourth (and probably final, says Aled!) instalment in his utterly unique ‘One Voice' series in which, through the magic of technology, Aled is able to duet with his younger self: man and boy, baritone and treble. Here, album highlights include ‘Sailing', The Sutherland Brothers' 1972 track best known as a hit for Rod Stewart, Handel's ‘Where'er you Walk', from the musical drama Semele, Welsh love song ‘Bugeilo'r Gwenith Gwyn' and traditional ballad ‘Scarborough Fair'. Aled even tracked down the original 80's guitarist, Dylan Fowler, to re-record his part for this new recording. TRACKLIST:1. Bright Eyes 2. Sea Fever 3. Scarborough Fair 4. Where ‘ere You Walk 5. Synopsis Many music lovers will confess they prefer to hear symphonies or operas in the comfort of their own home rather than live in person at a concert hall or theater. On today's date in 1911, the famous French novelist, hypochondriac, and notorious homebody Marcel Proust wrote to his friend, the composer Reynaldo Hahn, that he had just listened to a live afternoon performance of the whole first act of Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger tucked up in bed and planned to hear Debussy's still-new opera Pelléas and Mélisande later that same evening, once again snugly secure in his Parisian apartment. Now, these days with radio, TV, and multiple live-streaming devices, this would be no big deal – but in 1911 how could that be possible? Well, for 60 francs a month -- a small fortune in 1911 -- wealthy Parisians could hear live performances of operas and plays relayed by a special phone line to a home receiver called the “théâtrophone.” First demonstrated in Paris in 1881, by 1890, the “théâtrophone was commercialized and the service continued 1932. Of course, even an enthusiastic subscriber like Proust had to admit the phone line sound quality was “très mal” (“really bad” in plain English) and hardly the same as being there in person. How does a curse like theirs filter down the generations? The fate of the family of Cadmus and Harmonia, and their own...CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.Sources: Early Greek Myths, by Timothy Gantz; Theoi.com entries on: Harmonia, Ares' Wrath (Cadmus), Artemis' Wrath (Actaeon), Pentheus, Semele, and Leucothea.Attributions and licensing information for music used in the podcast can be found here: mythsbaby.com/sources-attributions.

Semele: From Shame To Ecstasy

Keeping Her Keys

Angela and I explore the myth of Semele, Mother of Dionysus, and also called "The Mother of Frenzy." Semele was the youngest daughter of Cadmus, an ambitious king with connections to Aphrodite, Aries and more. Semele dared to fall in love with Zeus, and was shamed for it by her sisters. Ultimately, she was duped into requiring Zeus to reveal his true divinity, thereby rendering her to dust. However, Dionysus, being the good son, ensured that she was transformed into a goddess. At times called, "Thyone," meaning something like "Mother of Frenzy," we delve into the different types of frenzy, from panic to spiritual ecstasy. Semele's key themes: desire, shame, love, death, rebirth, frenzy, and ecstasy. Known as The Mother of Dionysus, Semele was venerated as an expression of The Great Mother in areas of the ancient Mediterranean where the cult of Dionysus was prevalent. In ancient Athens, she was honored during a minor festival. Generally, her origins are thought to be in Thebes. She is an expression of The Death Mother that is particularly potent, as she began as a mortal woman and then became a Goddess. keepingherkeys.com
