The craft beer scene in Atlanta has exploded in recent years, yet there are few breweries in town that have the distinction of being Black-owned. Nappy Roots members Fish Scales and Skinny DeVille are hoping to shake that up. Earlier this month the duo opened Atlantucky Brewing, a brand new brewery situated in the heart of Castleberry Hill – and very aptly in a building owned by Atlanta icon Herman J. Russell's family. Check out our latest Bounce Back episode to hear how they're hoping to continue the legacy of the historic neighborhood and bring craft beer to hip-hop. You can find the video feature here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0zpLInbnQw&t=123s Be sure to follow @atlantucky on social media and let us know if you visit the brewery. They're also allowing local artists to use the space to display and sell their work, so head down to Castleberry Hill and support local creators!
Host Jill Melancon speaks with Fish Scales and Skinny Deville of Nappy Roots about opening their own brewery in Castleberry Hill and the importance of people of color seeing themselves in the brew business.
Atlantucky Brewery and Bright Ring Foundation will be hosting the “Deeply Rooted” art exhibit from April 16 through May 8. The entire run of the show is free to attend, and there will be a “meet the artists” event on opening night, Friday, April 16 from 4 pm - 8 pm. For the rest of the show's run, the public is invited to visit Atlantucky (located at 170 Northside Drive SW) on Tuesday - Friday between 2 pm - 6 pm. “Deeply Rooted” embraces the Castleberry Hill neighborhood where the brewery resides. All of the artwork, including paintings and digital works, were made by local Atlanta artists and is available for sale. The concept of the show is to give local artists a platform to display their work and lead to a sustainable career. On opening night, there will be an art auction as well. “We believe in the power of expression and understand how important art is to our culture,” said DeVille. “As musicians, we consider ourselves artists, and we are proud to be able to help local artists showcase their amazing work.” Nappy Roots fans and art enthusiasts alike are invited to stop by Atlantucky to see the local talents' artwork. The artwork displayed at the exhibit will be available for purchase. Atlantucky Brewery plans to begin serving its original beers in the summer of 2021. After more than 20 years in the public eye, GRAMMY-nominated Nappy Roots has added to their repertoire by expanding beyond music into projects that include craft beer, television production and more. The alternative Southern rap group has been nominated for two GRAMMY Awards and is best known for hit singles such as “Good Day,” “Po Folks” and “Awnaw.” “Good Day” is regularly used in TV and radio ads, movie theme songs and more. Director of Sales for Brock Built Homes, Trisha Howard, is welcomed back in studio for today's episode of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, Howard discusses new Brock Built Homes communities, an exciting partnership with Atlanta Mission and the impacts of COVID-19 (coronavirus) on the homebuilding industry on this All About Real Estate Segment of Radio. Howard has over a decade of experience in the home building and real estate industry and is passionate about sales and sales training. Howard made it her mission to help her team reach personal and professional goals while changing families' lives by helping them earn homeownership. Founded in 1984 by Steve Brock, Brock Built Homes is a family-owned company, renowned in Atlanta for its Craftsman style homes and for pioneering untapped areas. In the 1990s, Brock Built Homes was the first company to invest in West Midtown and the company actively looks for more Atlanta areas to invest in. Communities Brock Built Homes has several beautiful communities that are currently selling in West Midtown, including West Town, West Highlands and West Side Station. Each community has its own perks, personality and offers spectacular prices. Brock Built Homes recently created a master-planned community in Castleberry Hill named Castleberry Station. Priced in the high $300,000s, the community is selling quickly. Giving back While building homes is what it is known for, Brock Built Homes always strives to give back to the community as evidenced by their recent partnership with Atlanta Mission. Atlanta Mission is building a new homeless shelter that will add almost 100 beds for homeless citizens in the area. Brock Built Homes helped Atlanta Mission acquire a bigger reach and gain more donations to break ground on the shelter by giving away a home to one lucky lottery winner. “It's not just about us improving the quality of our buyers' lives, it's about, how we improve the city of Atlanta and how we play our part and give back” said Howard. “In most of the homeless shelters today, there are certain requirements that prevent certain families from getting in. This is a low-barriers shelter that really opens up help for a whole new demographic. This was our chance to partner with them, so we gave them the home.” COVID-19 Like every other socially conscious company during this time, Brock Built Homes has adjusted their processes and business plan in response to COVID-19. Howard discusses the changes she believes are here to stay in the industry. “I think the biggest impact COVID has had on all of us is implementing tools that we use to help buyers shop differently,” said Howard. “It's changed buyers' shopping behavior permanently.” Tools Brock Built Homes implemented that are permanent include options of virtual home tours, a website chat feature, virtual appointments and 3D video tours. Homebuyers are now using these tools as a first step in the home buying process, deciding what they like and ruling out options from the comfort of their own home. Often when we talk about an art collection it comes from the context and perspective of the collector; however typical to Sidewalk Radio, we like to look at things a bit differently. In this months episode we explore the art of collecting by assembling a collection of our own: the appraiser, the artist, the cultural curator, and the puppet master (well, of sorts). What we find is that the art of collecting is a varied, and many times individual, process of understanding. This month Gene welcomes to the show Spalding Nix, a certified art appraiser of Spalding Nix Fine Art; Todd Murphy, an avid art collector; Louis Corrigan, creator of Flux Projects; and Daniel Summers Jr., the Marketing Director for the Center of Puppetry Arts.
