We throw the word "aesthetic" around a lot on this podcast -- but we've never really slowed down to talk about what it means. How do we define the aesthetic of a work? Is that different from the aesthetic of a world? How do subgenres and plot structures intertwine with those ideas? Guest Mary Robinette Kowal joins us to explore the crafting of aesthetics in worldbuilding and storymaking! We discuss pacing, word choice, set dressing, the theatre of the mind, the "breath" of the written word, and so much more. We also examine how aesthetic can be a shorthand to help your reader with an on-ramp into your story -- but how you may also need to teach your reader where your particular world deviates from what aesthetic may lead them to assume. Transcript for Episode 88 (in-progress -- email us if you're interested in joining the scribal team!) Our Guest: Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author, Mary Robinette Kowal is a novelist and professional puppeteer. In 2008 she won the Astounding Award for Best New Writer and her debut novel Shades of Milk and Honey (Tor 2010) was nominated for the 2010 Nebula Award for Best Novel. In 2019, the first book in the Lady Astronaut series The Calculating Stars (Tor 2018), won the Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards, becoming one of only eighteen novels to do so. Her stories have appeared in Strange Horizons, Asimov's, and several Year's Best anthologies, as well as in her collection Scenting the Dark and Other Stories from Subterranean Press. Her short story collection Word Puppets was published in 2015, and includes both of her Hugo Award-winning stories in addition to fifteen others, running the full range of speculative fiction. In 2016, her World War I fantasy novel Ghost Talkers was published by Tor books, followed in 2018 by her alternate history Lady Astronaut series. From 2019-2021, Kowal was the President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. In 2011, after several appearances as a guest star on the podcast Writing Excuses, Kowal became a permanent member of the cast. In 2013, the seventh season of the podcast won the Hugo Award for Best Related Work. Her involvement in the podcast also contributed to the creation of the Shadows Beneath anthology, in which Kowal and her three co-hosts contributed short stories alongside materials charting the unique creative process of each author. Kowal is also an award-winning puppeteer. In high school, she took up puppetry as a hobby, but as Kowal says, she “never thought of it as something you could get paid for.” Instead, she went to East Carolina University to pursue an art degree, minoring in theater and speech. While performing as Audrey II in a performance of Little Shop of Horrors, she learned that a professional puppeteer had come to the show. It was a turning point. Kowal went on to intern at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, GA. With over twenty years of experience, she has performed for LazyTown (CBS), the Center for Puppetry Arts, Jim Henson Pictures, Sesame Street, and founded Other Hand Productions. Her designs have garnered two UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence, the highest award an American puppeteer can achieve. Her career in puppetry consumed much of Kowal's creative energy for over ten years. Although she wrote in high school and college, it wasn't until her brother moved his family to China that she began writing again. Like Lewis Carroll and J.M. Barrie, she started creating children's fantasy as a way to stay connected to her young niece and nephew. Reminded of how much she enjoyed writing, she began submitting short stories and made her first sale in 2005, and her first professional sale to Strange Horizons in 2006. When she isn't writing or puppeteering, Kowal brings her speech and theater background to her work as a voice actor. She is a member of SAG/AFTRA. She has recorded audio books and short stories for authors such as Seanan McGuire, Cory Doctorow and John Scalzi. She likes to describe voice acting as “puppetry, without the pain.” Mary Robinette lives in Nashville with her husband Rob and over a dozen manual typewriters. Sometimes she even writes on them.

Are you a fan of Sesame Street? I had the opportunity to ask Chris Thomas Hayes, a puppeteer and actor, about what it takes to capture our imagination, along with the imagination of our kids. This episode reveals a lot about what happens behind the scenes of Sesame Street.  Chris walks us through how he gets into character in the field of puppetry and how he approached playing a legacy character that may have even existed when he was a child and watched the show on TV. Listening to Chris, I'm just in awe of the technical sophistication behind what it takes to play our favorite Sesame Street characters including Big Bird, Hoots the Owl, or Ernie. Chris also talks about the way he conveys emotions through a puppet that is made of felt and stitching. In Chris' words, the characters on Sesame Street were not built out of anger, but they came from love. They were built with the spirit of a child in mind that the more we watch them, the more we forget these are not real entities. So how then is he able to convey anger out of his puppets?  Now, if you are a kid at heart and you want to be sure you're living your best year in 2022, I want to invite you to a free one-hour masterclass. It's available for one week only where I cover the five key limitations that can get in your way. There's a way for you to reconnect with your inner child so you can be a double-powered human being, someone who is confident, boundless with energy, optimistic, capable, resourced, and intelligent.  Imagine having both worlds – the kid in you who's imaginative and curious paired with the adult in you who is capable, resourced, and intellectual. You can absolutely reconnect with that child inside of you. And as a grown-up with capabilities and resources and intellect, there's just not a more powerful combination than this.  So be sure to sign up today for my first free masterclass of the year focused on uncovering the 5 BIG limitations we believe as adults that do hold us back, be sure to hop on and RSVP by visiting: www.melissallarena.com/limits I'd love to help you in this exclusive and free one-hour session that takes place on January 4th at 8 pm EST but will also be recorded. Definitely, sign-up for access to the recording if you can't make it LIVE as it'll be available for one week upon completion for those who sign-up. You deserve to know why growing up may not be all that it's cracked up to be and how we can approach 2022 with a greater sense of self-awareness. So be sure to sign up today by visiting www.melissallarena.com/limits.  If you know a parent who's always wanted to know what goes on, on Sesame Street, then share this episode with him or her. They're going to love hearing all of this behind-the-scenes, never heard before information about our beloved Sesame Street.  Chris Thomas Hayes' Biography Chris Thomas Hayes is an actor, writer, director, and puppeteer, originally from Hartford, Connecticut. On stage, Chris has had the pleasure to tour and perform with The Madcap Puppets, Dark Side of The Room, Dad's Garage, Whole World Theater, The Center for Puppetry Arts, and Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis.  Some of Chris' film and television credits include Teen Wolf, Doom Patrol, Woke, Vampire Diaries, and Sesame Street, where Chris serves as Muppet Performer for Hoots the Owl and Elijah. Highlights Creativity:  This art form helps maintain imagination. Everything we learn in school – improvisation, puppetry, acting, and all those things – means learning how to play again. We have that innately in us when we're young. Then slowly, it's dragged out of us and we just become who we are.  Curiosity: Follow what makes you or your child curious and be part of the fostering of their imagination Courage: Chris Thomas' mentor taught him that while you want to preserve a legacy character, you should not be afraid to break the glass and bring something new. In what areas of your life should you be “breaking the glass”? What limiting beliefs do you need to let go of? Bravery: Children are brave enough to ask questions and as adults, we lose a bit of that bravery.  Surreal: There's nothing like puppets. There's really good CGI. But there's something about being able to see those creatures and those creations up close where it feels surreal.  Improv: There's so much improvisation that goes with Sesame Street. There are a lot of moments when puppeteers can take lines, jump in, and pitch jokes, and those are the funniest moments.  Awareness: There is no hole inside Big Bird so he has to look down at his chest when he's walking forward. He's doing it blindfolded so there has to be a lot of spatial awareness. Age: The age that you do your character says a lot about what you have to say and how what you say should be received, at least from the acting standpoint with puppets. Many puppeteers write themselves a character biography so they have something to grab on to and guide them. It helps them figure out tactics or objectives in a scene. Diverse: No one thinks about puppetry. But there are a lot of options to be a working actor. We get wrapped up in what we see in Hollywood, but there are tons of different positions for actors. Play pretend: Being able to play pretend for a living and get into these worlds and characters is the best feeling. Magic: Puppetry is taking that inanimate object and bringing it to life so that you would think that it's moving by itself and has a life of its own. Education: Sesame Street has an outreach branch that produces content related to racial literacy. They talk about race, ethnicity, and how our differences make us stronger. The curriculum is big on knowing how to teach it and what areas to focus on.  Relevance: The episodes have now changed a bit that “parental helicoptering” is no longer necessary. They talk about homelessness, PTSD, etc, which are all tame and watchable.  Emotions: In conveying emotions and voicing emotion, you have to think about what your body does, what you sound like, what you look like when you're confident or angry. Anger is difficult to convey because the puppets are not really built out of anger.  Links to continue to learn from: Website: www.christhomashayes.com  Instagram: @chrisvscap Facebook: @chrisvscap Street Gang the HBO documentary: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQEFS6aKXCU  FREE DOWNLOAD Want to grab your free copy of the Courage Makerspace (™) Playbook? Today Catherine and Steve talk with Jason Hines, a puppet designer and engineer from Atlanta's Center for Puppetry Arts, a 40+ year-old institution showcasing puppet productions for children and adults, education programs and an extensive museum.  Jason has worked on many productions, several of which have been Halloween, spooky-themed puppet productions like the Ghastly Dreadfuls, as well as other projects that have appeared in TV and movies. We are thoroughly surprised and impressed by so much of what we learned about huge puppets, tiny, thumb-sized puppets, hybrid puppets and puppets married with computer graphic imagery (CGI).  One will be hard pressed to not gain an appreciation for and learn something new about puppets in this episode. Jason admits to having been a crafty, creative person forever, but be wasn't bit by puppets  until he was in college, where he discovered how fun the artform is.  He learned that he was a shy extrovert; meaning he was somebody that wanted to be at the center of attention while remaining under table and out of site.  He has his masters in puppetry arts and has worked in his field consistency for the last 25 years.  We learn from Jason about how he and the Center for Puppetry Arts collaborates with other organizations, including the film industry and opera companies and how he flies his own creative puppetry kite, in-part, through something that we think we all have to experience; puppet slams.  The Center for Puppetry Arts - https://puppet.org/The Moon and Me - BBC two seasons: https://g.co/kgs/SVq3SnYoutube:  https://www.youtube.com/user/CtrPuppetryArtsFaceBook:  https://www.facebook.com/CenterforPuppetryArts?ref=tsTwitter: @CtrPuppetryArtsInstagram:  @ctr_puppetry_artsKites and Strings Website: https://www.kitesandstrings.com/Facebook: @kitesandstringspodcastTwitter:   @KitesandstringsInstagram:  @Kites_and_stringsemail: Kitesandstringspodcast@gmail.com

Life (UN)Closeted: LGBTQ & Heterosexual Coming Out Stories & Advice for coming out of life's closets!

We're all flawed, all complicated, and all hunger to be accepted to be just who we are in the world. But, we also desire to feel safe. The bigger question is, "How do you feel safe when everyone sees you as flawed or complicated?" You don't let them IMPACT your life. You live you, and share your flawed and complicated life, even if that means you admit you've been abused - physically and emotionally...because someone else needs to hear your story. Benji Carr, author, journalist, and performer, takes us on his journey to come out of his closet - gay and otherwise - to embrace his flaw with making it complicated journey. https://www.amazon.com/Impacted-Novel-Benji-Carr-ebook/dp/B08QDYMWLJ/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=impacted&qid=1622836034&sr=8-1 ()About BenjiAs a child growing up in the South with cerebral palsy, Benji Carr developed an eye for the bizarre and quirky, which provided all of the stories he told his friends and family with a bit of flavor. Working as a journalist, storyteller and playwright, his work – whether the stories be personal tales of struggle and survival or fiction about cannibal lunch ladies, puppet romances, drag queen funerals, and perverted killer circus clowns – has been featured in The Guardian, ArtsATL and Pembroke Magazine. Onstage, his pieces have been presented at the Center for Puppetry Arts, Alliance Theatre, and as part of the Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival in Manhattan. He lives in Atlanta and helps run the online literary magazine, Gutwrench Journal. IMPACTED is his first novel. This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan put on their codpieces and fret over the innocence of teenage girls around David Bowie. Don't get us wrong, we love this movie, but why does this charming children's tale have a character named after the part of the anatomy responsible for transporting sperm? Author and professional puppeteer Mary Robinette Kowal describes her love of puppetry as an interest in the boundless nature of the medium. She can play any type of character, there are countless ways to present the puppets themselves, and combinations of puppet actors and "fleshies" are ripe for new experiences and metaphors for audiences. She even tells a great story about the unfortunate(?) place her hand ended up while on set for Sesame Street. Garner a new appreciation for how the craft of writing overlaps with the entry point for puppeteering and how many puppeteers are making the puppets they perform with while you count how many times MBS says "cool!" or "that's amazing!"
