Welcome and thank you for listening! In this episode, Dr. Margreet chatted with Claire Bracher about ‘The Good Enough Mother'. Claire Bracher has practiced as a midwife for 35 years and over this time her passion for her chosen field has broadened and deepened. She has looked at midwifery from every angle - working in labour wards, running antenatal and postnatal practices and lecturing and conducting research in midwifery at Wits University. Claire is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Certified Infant Massage Instructor and has a certification in integral life coaching from UCT. Through The Good Enough Mother Connection, she brings all her experience and skills together to provide new parents with a platform to navigate the new and demanding world of parenthood. Claire became aware that although there is a lot of parenting information available much of it applies a rose-tinted lens, that veers towards an image of the instinctually together unflappable mother, failing to acknowledge the dark gritty and sometimes lonely side of being a new mother. This unrealistic image falls against the backdrop of alarmingly high levels of anxiety and depression that are seen across the population, and only serves to prove to the vulnerable new mother that she is falling far from the desired image of perfection that society has depicted for her. Claire uses a model of resilience to help new parents make sense of their pregnancy and birth journey and then to move forward and navigate their new landscape and set their own realistic, achievable goals for parenthood, thus avoiding the feeling of shame that comes with failure. This is achieved through therapeutic dialogue in group or individual sessions, infant massage and a holistic approach to lactation care. Infant massage is a tried-and-true way to strengthen the baby/parent bond. Studies have also shown that baby massage can help relieve post-partum and anxiety related symptoms since massage releases oxytocin in both baby and parent, allowing them to feel calmer and more competent in their parenting skills. Elina Furman, Certified Infant Massage Instructor and founder of Kahlmi (the first baby massager that soothes infants and strengthens the baby/parent bond). After suffering from postpartum anxiety while her firstborn son had colic, Elina set out to help other parents dealing with the same situation. She became a certified infant massage therapist and instructor and was inspired to create Kahlmi to help educate and bring awareness to baby and child massage in the US and beyond. A 2022 JPMA Innovation Awards finalist, Kahlmi is the first soothing and interactive massage and bonding tool tailored to the unique needs of parent/caretaker and child. It helps improve digestion, lessen fussiness, strengthen immunity, promote body awareness, and more.

However, in light of the current global situation with Coronavirus, recording for now is on hold. So, I’ve decided to share with you the episodes I’ve recorded so far over the past couple of months. I know many of us are currently self-isolating at home with lots of time on our hands, so what better time to listen to your favourite podcasts, or perhaps discover some new ones! Episode Summary: Today’s episode is close to my heart, because I went through my own experience with Adrenal Fatigue and it was ruining my life. I just thought I was tired and burned out, so I kept trying to come up with more ways to be productive, to get more done in less time. But it turns out that was just perpetuating my symptoms. I was exhausted. I was cranky. I kept landing in urgent care with what I thought was strep throat, and was about to have surgery even though my doctors didn’t have a real diagnosis for what I was experiencing. I also had trouble getting pregnant for nearly a year, which I also think was related to my own Adrenal Fatigue. I had no idea that’s what I was dealing with, and once I identified Adrenal Fatigue as the cause of my health issues, I was able to treat it and finally start feeling like myself again within a month. Jennifer Blossom is the millennial expert of holistic living for mothers and children. She is a Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Occupational Therapist, Certified Infant Massage Instructor and Holistic Lifestyle Entrepreneur. Jennifer specializes in maternal and pediatric health and is OBSESSED with helping Mommas get grounded and absolutely glowing during Motherhood and beyond. Outside of running her company, Blossom to Be Fit, which was just renamed to Blossoming Mommy and Baby, Jennifer loves spending time with her husband, working as a therapist, going to church, cooking barefoot in the kitchen, home decor, and all things COZY. She’s also expecting her own little bundle of love soon! Congratulations, Jennifer!
