Celebrated for her prominent role in As the World Turns, actress Melanie Smith has redirected her professional journey toward the exploration of heartache, grief, and reinvention. Her endeavors have encompassed guiding numerous individuals in breaking free from their past, unearthing their authentic identities, and masterminding profound shifts in their life trajectories.Joining Thank You Heartbreak at the 7-minute mark, Melanie provides an exclusive peek into the genesis of her inaugural book, "Unfinished Business: 8 Steps to Heal Your Trauma, Transcend Your Past, and Transform Your Life." She delves deeply into the intricate tapestry of emotions that propelled her research, recounting her personal odyssey of conquering childhood illness and subsequent solitude, debunking the illusion of an idealized existence, and embarking on the profound inner journey that facilitated her harmonious union with self and others.Within this emotionally charged narrative lies the poignant tale of her mother's untimely departure due to a rare form of cancer, the tragic death of her sister, the dissolution of her marital bond, and the dizzying relinquishment of her once-cherished dream home. These cascading adversities served as the impetus for her to confront a fundamental query: "Who would I be, could I be, if nothing or no one had ever gotten in my way?"Melanie's work surrounding Unfinished Business underscores the significance of addressing lingering unresolved issues, which have the potential to obstruct the path to self-discovery and self-fulfillment, ultimately preventing individuals from embracing their destined sense of self.Key episode themes:Trauma from being diverted from our perceived life purpose.Link between early validations and entrapment in adult obligations.Recovery as a vital life skill for inner peace and abundance through life's pain.Trust in oneself and a higher pattern.Value of charge-free and trigger-free dating.Body as a guide to finding our sweet spot of belonging.Girls abandon their bodies; boys abandon their hearts.Healing potential of relationships.Self-attunement for self-understanding.Distinguishing between the necessity for survival-driven special attention and ordinariness.Melanie Smith:Website: https://workwithmelaniesmith.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/melaniesmithofficialUnfinished Business: https://unfinishedbusinessthebook.comUnfinished Business via Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Unfinished-Business-Trauma-Transcend-TransformChelsea Leigh Trescott:Website: https://breakupward.comEmail: chelsea@breakupward.comAdvice Column: https://www.huffpost.comWriting: https://thoughtcatalog.com/chelsea-leigh-tresco

Modern Loss founders Rebecca Soffer and Gabrielle Birkner are members of the "Women With Dead Parents Club." Rebecca's mom died after a car accident and her dad had a heart attack while traveling abroad. Gabi's father and stepmother were murdered in a robbery when a recently released methamphetamine addict was sent to their home to make what should've been a run-of-the-mill home repair. Rebecca and Gabi met and created Modern Loss, a multimedia platform for sharing candid stories about life after loss. Through their book, website, and live events, they're sparking powerful and unconventional conversations on grief... and beginners are most definitely welcome. This week, we're talking about how ANY moment can be a trigger for grief, the surreal feeling of being an adult orphan, and why the time for pretending to be perfect is over. Piggybacking off “How To Move On When You See Your Ex Every Day,” Chelsea responds to three listener's letters that relate to the topic. Instead of shelling out advice, Chelsea tries to point out what each letter is not communicating despite their confessional nature. Chelsea jumpstarts the episode with her usual psychobabble, wondering "where should I begin?,” as if this were a therapy session she desperately needs. She talks about the difficulty of asking for help, the guilt of talking about yourself and why it’s so important to have someone or at least some outlet that you can turn to that asks, What are you feeling? Where does it hurt? What is going on?At 17:30, we hear from The Queen of Sorrow, a letter writer who’s confessed her love to her best friend only to have him admit that he’s been crushing on another girl. Now she has to watch them flirt in class and she feels betrayed. In our second letter, at 29:18, Chelsea responds to A Large Amount of Emotional Baggage, a woman who was betrayed by her ex and best friend who were sleeping together. She finds out that her entire friend group had been lying to her about what was going on and so she breaks ties with her boyfriend, all her friends, and loses contact with her parents in the aftermath for awhile too. The only thing is, her new friends have begun to hang out with her old friends and she’s scared that putting herself in a social setting with them will trigger her post-heartbreak feelings of self-hatred. At 46:13, DTF writes in from Instagram. She’s just blocked her friend and love interest on social media and is livid, not to mention confused. After asking him, she discovered he, too, was “dtf,” only when he told her he saw her like he sees all his friends, she felt wronged. `Chelsea gets to heart of it.If you have a question, write in at Chelsea@breakupward.com—Sign up for Chelsea’s newsletter at: bit.ly/tyhbletterFind Chelsea’s website at: www.breakupward.comWork with Chelsea at: www.breakupward.com/shopConnect and send in your questions and/or letters on Instagram.com/thankyouheartbreak or by email Chelsea@breakupward.com__Referenced in this episode:“How To Move On When You See Your Ex Every Day,” by Chelsea Leigh Trescott via The Huffington Posthttps://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/advice-column-how-to-move-on-from-an-ex-you-see-every_us_582d4752e4b0d28e55214a99“Where Should We Begin?” by Esther Perel via iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/where-should-we-begin-with-esther-perel/id1237931798?mt=2https://www.estherperel.com/podcastClothes to Heart, Founded by Allison Trescotthttps://clothestoheart.org/Chase the Rainbow by Poorna Bellhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/147116070X/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0A Manual for Heartache by Cathy Rentzenbrinkhttps://www.amazon.com/Manual-Heartache-Cathy-Rentzenbrink/dp/1509824456/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1533273531&sr=1-1&keywords=a+manual+for+heartacheMaya Angelou, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

Chelsea Leigh Trescott broke up with a life that wasn't serving her. After leaving home for college, Chelsea found herself in the thick of depression, anorexia, and a string of long-distance relationships—triggered by the massive fear of not living up to others' expectations. Learning to face her loss of identity, connection, time, and self-respect led her to start Breakupward, a movement and coaching practice that encourages men and women to "break up" with the beliefs and people that no longer serve them. We're talking about cutting ties with addiction and disorder, the slow practice of becoming (one day at a time!), and how grief gives us more access to life. Also this week, the relationship between grief and sex—why some people have sex while grieving... and why some people don't.
