This week we talk with our friend, Independent writer/director Chris Ott. We discuss the beggining of the film making journey. What's it like to begin with an idea and look up at the tall task ahead of you. How do you approach raising money, transitioning from crew to being in charge, and the hopes for a project that is in it's earliest stages. Chris shares what strategic storytelling is and the difference between a story and a strategic story, why this is all very important for industrial innovators to get right, how founders can get started to sell their vision more effectively (thematically and tactically) by building their personal brand which in-turn bolsters the company brand, and finally a “What's Hot and What's Hype” section when it comes to which tactical media tools and channels are most effective in 2024.

Starting out as a 12v salesperson at Best Buy, Chris Ott spent his entire time with the company trying to get back into the tech/installer bay. After a year of excuses, Chris followed a friend to work at Circuit City where he could pursue his true passion. As a big box store, there were a lot of rules and structure, which Chris really appreciated. Over the course of 13 years, he worked up the ranks to become an install manager before the company came to an end. When the company went bankrupt, Chris decided he wanted to get away from the big box stores. Over the next few years, Chris experienced everything from higher-end boutiques to small mom-and-pop shops. Ultimately it was his part in an iPod-mini install video that went viral, that helped Chris really make a name for himself in the industry. He went on to work for some great shops, as well as some toxic ones. Through it all he learned the value of work-life balance and surrounding yourself with like-minded people. What You'll Learn: How a viral video affected Chris's standing in the industry. What activity helped to pull Chris out of his depression. Why you should be picky about who you work with. And much more! Favorite Quote: “I like to address some of these taboo things, but doing it in a positive fashion that's positive to the industry.” -Chris Ott Connect with Chris: YouTube

There's an entitlement issue in the car audio industry. A lot of guys want instant gratification of perfecting something without putting in the effort to acquire the skill set. It's truly an industry that requires initiative. Chris Ott wasn't paid for every hour he put into learning a skill. He learned things on his own so that he could speed up the process or build value in the product, so he could sell the job properly. By being on both the sales side and the technician side, Chris knows how to get people to know, like, and trust him. A lot goes into building a relationship with a customer, right down to the shop uniform. Presenting a professional demeanor is the first impression. Beyond that, people are going to notice how clean your shop is, what measures you take to protect the cars, and your history of success. Too many owners get complacent with how they run their business. Things are always changing, and you never know what innovation can do to your momentum. What You'll Learn: How to gain a client's trust. How to ease customers' concerns. What drives innovation in the industry. When DSP can be beneficial. We don't expect you to recognize the name, but sometimes the unexpected turns out to be the most interesting. Chris Ott joins us today to share his experiences that involve multiple former guests of ours. He gives us a great idea of what the average role player in college basketball will go through and also the struggles of a first year Division 1 program. Ott played competitive High School and AAU hoops both with and against some big time legendary names out of the Los Angeles area. He went on to play at Cal Poly where he was a member of the team for their very first year at the Division 1 level. That year Cal Poly had the losingest record for a first year Division 1 program (1-26). He then transferred and finished his career at Mercer. He shares some great stories about Andre Miller, Chris Herren, Rico Harris, Paul Shirley, Elton Brand, Felipe Lopez, Carlos Arroyo, legendary coach Bob Burton, playing against Duke and MUCH more. This episode was an absolute joy. We know you're all used to our former professional players but we know you will love these stories and really appreciate his basketball experiences and the incredible players that he was able to play against. We felt this episode was important and very relatable to what the average college basketball player experiences during their hoop journey and we believe this will give you a greater appreciate for collegiate role players and first year Division 1 programs. Turns our Chris is also a fan of our podcast so BIG thanks to Chris for his time and for also being a supporter of our show. Here is the first video foray for the "Wealth Actually" podcast (a bit by accident! We had to switch formats midstream . . . so I decided to experiment with the video format). I interviewed Christopher Ott on #Cybersecurity for the Ultra High Net Worth, High Net Worth and Family Office space. We talk about how one should view their own digital risks, how to protect yourself, and what to do when you have been compromised. We kept it to 40 minutes and probably could have discussed issues for more than three hours. Chris is a partner at Rothwell Figg, the litigation firm based in Washington, D.C. Successfully litigating complex data security matters, conducting hundreds of investigations, and winning dozens of appeals, Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Ott held various influential positions at DOJ including Supervisory Cyber Counsel to the National Security Division of the DOJ, In these roles, he investigated and charged the largest known computer hacking and securities fraud scheme and the hack of Yahoo by Russian intelligence operatives, the largest data breach in history, https://youtu.be/XzYwkjA1qiA BASICS Cybersecurity- the main concerns are around the ability to control access and use of information. Everybody has at least three types of information PREDICTIVE DATA This is data that will help predict what you are going to do. Today on the Flashpoints Chris Ott, Executive Director of the ACLU of Wisconsin tells us why the internationally celebrated legal rights group has called for the immediate resignation of both Kenosha Sheriff, David Beth and Police Chief Daniel Miskinis. My guest today is Jon Lampley. Jon is an incredibly gifted multi-instrumentalist and one of the most generous musicians I’ve witnessed, enthusiastically giving of his heart and soul every time he is on stage. Jon developed tuba skills in middle and high school ensembles while playing trumpet in church. He majored in Jazz Studies at The Ohio State University, where he met and collaborated with similarly-driven friends, at their college house on Hunter Ave. In homage to that college house, Jon (trumpet/sousaphone), Dan White (saxophone) and Chris Ott (trombone/beatbox) formed the dynamic band Huntertones. All three wrote music for the band, and recently the compositions have had a more collaborative process. Their soulful rhythm section consists of John Hubble on drums, Adam DeAscentis on bass, Justin Stanton on keys/trumpet, and Josh hill on guitar, blending jazz, hip-hop, R&B, with an infectious New Orleans vibe. Huntertones motto is to have their audience feeling better leaving than when they came in, winning the joyful support of fans around the world. After graduating from OSU, Huntertones was selected to be travel ambassadors for American Music Abroad, through the U.S. State Department, a cultural exchange program. Their travels to share their original music in Barbados, Ecuador, Togo and Zimbabwe had a profound impact on each musician individually and definitely as a group musically. Jon witnessed in Africa that there was no separation between singing and dancing, they are one in the same! Which explains what delights me in watching Jon perform; he embodies the joy and gracious spirit that resonated with him so deeply, as African musicians taught song, instrument and movement together. Since he was a junior in college, Jon has been the touring trumpet player for the platinum selling rock band, Of A Revolution (O.A.R.). When Jon is not touring with Huntertones or O.A.R., you can catch him performing with Jon Batiste’s “Stay Human”, the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Check the show notes for links to all of Jon’s creative projects! Enjoy the podcast! Links: jonlampley.com huntertones.com FB: Jon Lampley IG: @jonlampleymusic IG: @Huntertones
