Starting out as a 12v salesperson at Best Buy, Chris Ott spent his entire time with the company trying to get back into the tech/installer bay. After a year of excuses, Chris followed a friend to work at Circuit City where he could pursue his true passion. As a big box store, there were a lot of rules and structure, which Chris really appreciated. Over the course of 13 years, he worked up the ranks to become an install manager before the company came to an end. When the company went bankrupt, Chris decided he wanted to get away from the big box stores. Over the next few years, Chris experienced everything from higher-end boutiques to small mom-and-pop shops. Ultimately it was his part in an iPod-mini install video that went viral, that helped Chris really make a name for himself in the industry. He went on to work for some great shops, as well as some toxic ones. Through it all he learned the value of work-life balance and surrounding yourself with like-minded people. Mark Eldridge is a living icon in the car audio industry, having been involved in it since he was 16 years old. He purchased his first vehicle, a 1974 Chevy Blazer, and installed an audio system in it. From that point forward, he was always upgrading the system for better sound. After college, he worked at General Dynamics and joined the Air Force, where he discovered a car audio magazine that taught him about cars, audio, and competition. He started competing in 1993 and went on to win his first world championship in 1995. Mark enjoyed going to shows and showing off his car while getting critiqued, but has since moved his focus to education. He continues to be passionate about teaching people how to make their audio systems sound the best they can. He teaches two-day classes where he covers everything related to music, the auditory system, and the interior of the car. His classes have grown from seven to eight people to as many as 20-24, and he expects to hold at least 6 classes this year. Roger Quast was born and raised in Minnesota. By age 12, Roger was helping his dad to replace an engine, and he says that was when his love of working on cars began. His first vehicle was a 1950s Chevy truck that he absolutely loved. From there he got a Camaro, and his love of vehicles continued to grow. Roger can remember his first time at Minnesota's Back to the 50's car show in 1999. With over 10,500 cars predating the 1960's, Roger hasn't missed a year yet. It was after that very first show that Roger and his wife began brainstorming ideas on how to get the next generation involved. Years later they would officially launch Wrenching For The Future, a non-profit that aims to show kids a non-traditional career path. 95% of their focus is on spreading awareness to kids that there are other options in life than becoming a doctor or lawyer. The other 5% is actually going to schools and helping kids build a rat rod in a week's time. Shop class, and even home ec, are becoming extinct, which Roger believes is setting kids up for failure. Going forward he hopes to have an enclosed trailer full of tools he can bring to different schools to get kids hands-on experience. Roger recalls a build done at one school that just dumbfounded students and teachers alike. Not only did they complete the build in a week, but they did 95% of it without a lift. They did everything, down to fabricating their own motor and tranny mounts. Dave MacKinnon got started in car audio while in high school at the age of 17. He participated in a co-op program where he volunteered at a local shop regularly. He loved knowing how stuff worked, and learned a lot from trial and error. After high school, Dave went on to try many different roles, from sales to tech rep, but it was a gig as a writer that really caught his interest. His first writing job fell into his lap when he got an email from a friend back in 2000 asking if Dave wanted to be his technical editor for a car audio magazine. Formally trained as an Electronics Technician, Dave had the expertise to successfully explain how mobile audio components work. Reviewing more than 450 products, Dave was passionate about sharing his knowledge. He says that's how something that started as a side gig turned into an 11 year career. With no formal training as a writer, Dave simply loved telling stories. His next and current writing job would come in 2015 as Head Writer for 1sixty8 Media. Last week we talked about ongoing training from the owners point of view. Today, Brandon talks with his right hand man about the employees perspective on training. There's a reason Dan Castro has worked for Brandon for a decade, and that's because he invests in his employees. Taking them to events such as Master Tech Expo or Knowledge Fest, Dan loves doing annual training. He says he has seen his skillset and comfortability grow exponentially because of it. While he really enjoys the hands-on training, Dan says he still learns a lot from taking notes, and then he brings the knowledge back and tries it hands on. He says one of his keys to success is not avoiding classes he already has a good foundation in. Dan can take a class 3 or 4 times and still learn something new each time. He says you really have to go in with an open mindset, not assuming you know it all already. Beyond just keeping their skills sharp, these outside training sessions are a great bonding experience for the team. Often Brandon will take the whole team, but he's also been trying out taking one employee to a training at a time. This way, he can give them one-on-one attention in working through what they're learning. With two new sales team members, Dan knows they will benefit a lot from further training in the industry. One thing they're always working on is systems and processes. It's how they keep things consistent and uniform from one customer to the next. He's a 10x X-Games gold medalist, been on Nitro Circus, and performs stunts in movies, among many other things. Fondly known as Cowboy Kenny, Mr. Kenny Bartram is here today. He describes himself as blessed to have figured out how to make a living being a goofball. Coming from a long line of motorcyclists, Kenny was riding for as long as he can remember, but it was freestyle motocross that really got him passionate. He can still recall being invited to one of the very first freestyle contests, and turning it down. Just watching what these other guys could do, Kenny didn't feel like he could hang. Finally, he agreed to attend a later motocross event, and even with his bike blowing up halfway through, Kenny was hooked. Motocross has evolved so much, with more mathematics and science going into the tricks. Kenny can recall when backflips first became a thing, and he realized it was something he'd have to be able to do. Just mastering the tricks wasn't enough, however. Kenny needed to make a name for himself and really build a brand. Not fitting the typical freestyler mold of tattoos and piercings, Kenny was just a good ole boy from Oklahoma. During an event in Portugal he donned a cowboy hat, and people loved it. Bringing the cowboy persona back to the US, he got a little more flack, but it quickly caught on, and Cowboy Kenny was born. Kenny has tried his hand at many endeavors, including trying to break into the Nascar scene. When he realized how tough that world was to get into without a ton of money or connections, he pursued a different dream. Kenny took his abilities and his fearless attitude and got into movie stunts. Kenny has now done over 60 movies, with no plans of stopping anytime soon. Earning residuals long after a movie was completed, Kenny was fortunate to still have some money coming in when Covid put a temporary end to motocross events. Because of this, John was one of the only manufacturers that had a full warehouse, and he gained a lot of new customers. Beyond that, John found himself hand-making face shields. While most of them he gave away, it still got John's name out there and cemented his reputation as a businessman with a heart. Your reputation can carry a lot of weight, and John strives to have one of someone that cares about his employees and his community. After 24 years with Perfectionist, John estimates they've done over $45million in lifetime revenue. With all of his own needs met, John's goal now is to make sure his employees are set up well also. He's a firm believer that you never want to sit at the table by yourself, because it's a lot more fun when all your friends are there with you. It's the same reason John will correct anyone that says they're self-made, because no one makes it to the top by themselves. It always takes a team in some form or another. That same gratitude should extend to your customers as well. If someone takes the time to leave you a good review, reach out and thank them. If you have passion, and continue to invest in and educate yourself, you'll reap the rewards. For John's first few years in business, every week he would ask himself what he struggled with that week, and then he would buy a book on it. With 33 years in the car audio and security industry, John Schwartz is an icon in the 12v world. His love for the industry started at 14 years old when he was working next door to a car audio shop. He can still remember the day a guy pulled up in his CRX and turned on the bass. With every window in the place shaking, John was intrigued. He immediately went into the shop and begged for a job. He started off just sweeping floors and cleaning bathrooms, but soon got to help with installs and learned the trade. At 16, John's family moved to Alaska, and John became the stereo guy at school. People started calling John the ‘Sound Doctor' and so he decided to get his first business license under that name. At 18, John got hired at Safe & Sound, but continued to do installs on the side. Eventually he went full time and rose through the ranks. With tons of other shops hitting John up to run theirs, John's boss wouldn't let him quit until he considered it a worthy job. That finally happened when the owner of CompuStar Auto Security asked for John's help in beating out Viper. As head tech, John was helping to develop new products. However, his boss also owned Perfectionist Audio, and wanted John's help to figure out why the business wasn't succeeding. John was sent to Perfectionist to be a spy but eventually fired the whole team and started over as the shop manager. When CompuStar moved to Seattle, John was asked to come along, but when he heard that would be the end of Perfectionist, he asked to stay. John's goals with the company included winning retailer of the year and buying the business from his boss, all before his 35th birthday. The first few years were rough, but in 2006 he built a new building and started pushing hard for that million dollar goal. John brought the company through the economic collapse of 2009, and by 2010 was up for retailer of the year. A few hours before the awards, John's boss told him he was thinking of selling the business. Thirty minutes later, the two had worked out a deal for John to be the buyer. Later that evening, Perfectionist would win retailer of the year. Both of John's goals were realized three weeks before his 35th birthday. Continuing to also work for CompuStar, John pitched the Australian market in 2015. CompuStar was so busy though, they told John he could be in charge of the Australian market. Next thing John knew, he had picked up 100 stores and was expanding into New Zealand and S. Africa. At the same time, John was developing a new sound deadening product, SoundSkins. Now, as an international distributor, retailer, manufacturer, and wholesaler, John was on top of the world. The cherry on top was winning retailer of the year for the second time. To celebrate, John's partner bought him the first 100 tubes of SoundSkins. John decided to send one to each big installer to get their name out there. John's plan was working, but his business partner got impatient and things started to get shady. This caused John to walk away from SoundSkins. A couple years down the road though, John would start another sound deadening manufacturing company on his own, called SoundShield. There are a couple of key components that make up a strong business. James Smith realized what those components were a few years ago. When his business partner left, James found himself running around like a chicken with his head cut off, trying to do it all. That's when he turned to business coaching and learned the importance of a strong foundation. Policies and procedures, and core values, are what every business should be built around. When you build your team around people that share your same core values and can follow your policies and procedures, you have a team you can trust. Oftentimes when an employee is not lining up with our values, we get pissed off, and passively aggressively take it out on them. It's imperative that you check in with your employees regularly and remain brutally honest with them. Growing up, Heidi Fahrenbach's parents were race car drivers, so she's always been around the automotive industry. It's no surprise that Brandon and Doug Dobson met at a knowledge fest, as they both know a lot about the industry. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, Adam McChesney believes that entrepreneurs aren't born, they're brewed. Cousins are often your first friends, and that rings true for Brandon's cousin, Matt Runge. Growing up together, Brandon watched Matt get to where he is today, owner of On Track Construction in Iowa. Matt found himself in Iowa as he pursued a college education at Iowa State University. He ended up feeling at home there and decided he would stick around and build his career there. In 2017, Matt decided it was time to step out on his own, so he took out some loans for big equipment and put together a crew. Now, just 5 years later, Matt oversees 6 crews and is looking at $15million in revenue this year. In addition to being able to run the big machines, Matt made sure he knew everything from payroll to bidding. His first big project he landed was a $2million job that took a year and a half. After that, things started moving very quickly. With the company growing rapidly, Matt utilized social media for recruiting employees. Matt recognizes that his company is only as good as the people he employs, and so he puts a lot of focus on team building. Part of what makes Matt such a good boss is that he admits he doesn't know everything, and he'll never be too good to clean the toilets. Bryan Bercik knows a thing or two about trial and error, and learning as you go. Not knowing the first thing about real estate, Bryan got into the industry in 2012 as a house flipper. When he bought his first investment, he realized he was in way over his head. He ended up way over budget, missed his timeline by a mile, and made no money. He felt like he had learned a lot though and dove into his second deal, where he made about $90k. The success went straight to his head. Moving his flips from the suburbs to the city, Bryan quickly found it was a very different ballgame, and it brought him close to bankruptcy. He didn't give up, however, and continued to learn. In 2017, he took a sales job with a large flipping company, where he was able to watch and learn as the business scaled. In the end, Bryan didn't agree with the integrity of the flipping business as it was buy low, put in low, and sell high. He decided it was time to branch out on his own and got into custom home building. He took all he had learned and built up Hemlock Homes through consistency and integrity.
