The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Racist Suspects Mike & Isolda Ott. A duo of White filmmakers, Mike is a veteran of the American Film Institute - where Gus T. just visited for their 38th annual festival, and has made a number of feature length films. Even though the Otts honed their cinematic skills here in North America, Isolda hails from Siberia. Mrs. Ott's place of origin immediately gained import because she suggested that she was ignorant about "american racism" because of her place of birth. Gus pondered if he and his black sisters and brothers can relocate to Russia to escape our problems with the System of White Supremacy. The White folks laughed at this. Anyway, Mrs. Isolda Ott reached out to Gus about their latest project, MCVEIGH, a 90 minute biopic focused on the main White Terrorist perpetrator of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, where 168 people were killed. We'll ask why the world needed a make-believe account of “Noodle McVeigh's” life and why they chose to fictionalize a sexual tryst with a “hot blond,” played by Ashley Benson, as opposed to highlighting McVeigh's real life sister Jenny, who knew in advance that her brother was concocting weapons of mass destruction. In addition to their inappropriate laughter, ignorance about McVeigh's contemporary Race Soldier Eric Rudolph - who bombed the 1996 Atlanta Olympics one year after the OKC blast, and Mr. Ott's absurd claim that his non-white ex-girlfriend practiced Racism against him because he's White, the filmmakers didn't seem to have a valid reason for making a feature length film about a White mass killer. Unless they're "fanboys" and "fangirls" of McVeigh. Fictional accounts of White killers is an entire genre of literature and film. #TheTurnerDiaries #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Monday, April 1, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:With the financial year wrapping up last week, a lot of data was published from the past 12 months. One crucial data set was that from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. This act provides a 100 days of guaranteed employment to every household. Most routinely, these jobs are available in the construction sector. With a poor monsoon last year, it was expected that more people would take up MNREGA (pronounced mun-rega) jobs. However, official data shows that year-on-year jobs remained largely flat. Usually, a bad monsoon would result in less agricultural work — and in turn, more MNREGA job applicants. Mint's economy reporters Gireesh Chandra Prasad and Rhik Kundu bring you the details. The big tech development from last year was the release of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence system that generates answers based on inputs. ChatGPT's free model runs on the GPT 3.5 version, while the paid model that costs 20 dollars a month uses GPT 4. But many users are unhappy with the output, even in the paid model. ChatGPT's founder Sam Altman agrees: he admitted that it "kind of sucks". A new version is expected this year. Mint's tech editor Leslie D'Monte writes about what we can expect with GPT-5, and how ChatGPT's competition is currently performing. If you're a tech geek, you might have heard of Carl Pei. He's the original mastermind behind the wildly successful brand of OnePlus, and later started his own company, named Nothing. The China-born CEO started out by making a website at 12 years old to help people beat a Pokemon game, and never stopped tinkering with both software and hardware. The result? Helping establish OnePlus, which ended up selling millions of phones — first in China, and then the rest of the world. But Pei still felt he needed to prove something on his own, and left in 2021 to start Nothing. Mint Lounge's Nitin Sreedhar speaks to Carl Pei about his journey and work for this fantastic profile.Chances are, you haven't been to watch a Bollywood movie in the theatres so far this year. And I won't blame you: the releases have been quite lacklustre. Mint's media and entertainment reporter Lata Jha reports that the absence of major stars from released movies has caused a drop in cinema goers. But the trend doesn't stop there: a slump in prices paid by OTTs such as Netflix, Hotstar, and Amazon Prime to stream movies post-release are also hampering the movie business. You may have heard of ShareChat and Moj. These are two short-video platforms that became popular after the Indian government banned TikTok in 2020. Both ShareChat and Moj are owned by the same company, Mohalla Tech. But despite being operational for more than four years, the companies haven't yet figured out a sustainable business model. The result? Losses adding up to more than 5,000 crore rupees in the last financial year. Where does Mohalla go from here? Priyamvada C tries to answer. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. You may send us feedback, tips or anything that you feel we should be covering from your vantage point in the world of business and finance. That's all for today. Thank you for listening. We'll be back tomorrow with a fresh episode of Top of the Morning. Mirroring global trend, the Indian IT industry showed muted growth in 2023. The slowdown -- that set in somewhere in the midst of 2022 -- continues to haunt the sector. Offshores deals are being called off, and hiring has shrunk for the first time in the last 25 years. But experts see some silver linings as the global economy is recovering. So will Indian IT continue to face deal ramp downs in 2024?  Over-the-top platforms, meanwhile, continued to entertain viewers in 2023. An SBI report in August last year said that OTT platforms would soon dethrone multiplexes as India's go-to entertainment option. So what is in the store for OTTs this year?  And it's not just OTT media services, the march of Indian equities too continued last year. They gave stellar returns of up to 20% in 2023. And most of these gains came in November and December itself. This fast paced rally has also sent the India VIX or volatility index to multi month highs during this time. The rising gauge means markets expect high volatility ahead. So are equities ripe for a correction in the new month?  Like the financial markets, India's space sector too has been scaling new heights. ISRO rang in the new year by launching the XPoSat mission. The aim is to study black holes and neutron stars. Listen to this episode of the podcast for more about this interesting project.

The domestic housing market in 2023 has seen one of the strongest performances in recent years. The robust growth in the segment is driven by strong demand in the residential market, complemented by supply of new inventories. The year is expected to see a 20 per cent rise in apartment sales in seven major Indian cities. That's around 2.6 lakh units. But what's behind this rush to own flats, and who are the buyers?   Industry analysts expect residential real estate sales in India to touch three lakh units in 2024, on the back of robust demand and quality launches. Meanwhile, the masala in Hindi film industry, which was missing for the past few years, is back in 2023 – minting big bucks for multiplexes nationwide. The resurgence of Bollywood movies is evident in this year's box office collections that have surpassed pre-pandemic figures for the first time. What, then, were the key ingredients that contributed to this spectacular comeback?  Following a dream run in 2023, Bollywood's prospects for the coming year depend on how the industry preps its scripts to outpace competition from OTTs and the appeal of world cinemas. Let us now turn to the outlook for oil markets in 2024. Can the geopolitical developments set the oil prices ablaze and take them past the 100 dollars a barrel mark in the year ahead? Or, will the slowdown in China keep the oil demand and prices in check? Pulkit Agarwal, head of India content, S&P Global Commodity Insights shares his interpretation of the current developments, and how he sees crude oil and gas prices play out in 2024. According to the Nasscom-Zinnov Report, 18 Global Capability Centres or GCCs were set up in India in the first half of 2023. As of June 2023, there are more than 1,580 in India and more than 1.6 million works in them. This number shows India's position as a prime destination for setting up Global Capability Centres. So what are Global Capability Centers? Listen to this episode of the podcast for answers.

The Indian digital media is once again on the brink of government scrutiny. The draft Broadcasting Services Bill aims to bring Cable TV and OTTs under a single regulatory framework, which can potentially stifle content innovation and autonomy. Kasthuri Akhil asks experts if the government can regulate what you watch online. Like the previous attempts, the new self-regulation for on-demand video streaming platforms is also being viewed with scepticism in light of increasing censorship. Analysts suggest that the proposed Bill needs cautious examination. Meanwhile, issues such as stubble burning incidents and groundwater depletion have fuelled intense debates in the state of Punjab. Fingers have been pointed at paddy cultivation in Punjab, prompting the Supreme Court to propose phasing out paddy in favour of ‘less water-intensive' crops. Today's Special report by Thareek Ahmed attempts to answer if Punjab needs a new crop mix. Looks like, phasing out paddy cultivation with other crops in Punjab can be a possible remedy to tackle air pollution in North India. Moving on to markets, shares of new-age companies are on a tear. Over the past three months, these stocks have rallied between 5 and 30 per cent on the bourses as against a 1 per cent rise in the benchmark indices. Nikita Vashisht spoke to experts to decode the drivers of the rally in stocks of new-age companies, and assess if they are a good investment bet at current levels. Watch this report. New age companies certainly have a promising future on the Indian stock exchanges. But just a few hundred kilometres away, Afghan refugees in Pakistan are facing an uncertain future. The Pakistani government's decision to expel 1.6 million ‘undocumented' Afghans from its territory has created a humanitarian crisis along its western borders. But why is Pakistan deporting Afghan refugees? Listen to this episode of the podcast for answers.

How is TV adapting to the digital age?

Business Standard Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2022 5:29

So, it has turned out that our humble idiot box is not as dumb as thought. It has kept pace with the changing times. It is bigger, leaner and equipped with advanced technology now -- offering great visual experience. But the challenge is always there. Online audiences have grown faster than any other medium including television in the last three years, raising questions about the future of TV.  However, such arguments can be put to rest as people remain committed to TV. It remains by far the largest video medium in India with 878 million viewers. That is nearly twice the number watching online videos. With Rs 72,000 crore a year in advertising and pay revenues, television towers over every other outlet, cornering 45% of all media revenues. Even as television languishes on older distribution formats such as cable and DTH, it is having a concurrent resurrection online, providing half of all videos consumed. Disney+Hotstar and SonyLIV, both owned by television companies, are among the top 10 video apps in India. While linear television audiences declined marginally last year, it still fuels the growth of online videos in India, on YouTube, short video apps and all other distribution formats. The rise of the internet as the latest distribution technology for content is also shaping the future of TV.  According to Vanita Kohli-Khandekar of Business Standard, TV by itself remains robust and strong. Future of TV is about the decline of traditional distribution formats, she says. Competitors for TV players have changed now. More than half of what India watches continues to be on General Entertainment Channels, with five non-Hindi channels in the top 10.  Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada remain the blockbuster languages of television, showing year-on-year growth. The simplicity of its model keeps television going as choices across the video spectrum multiply from 10-second videos to 10 hours of bingeing. But the single-biggest trend right now is the migration of viewers at the top end to ‘pay OTT', and at the bottom end to free-to-air television and ‘free OTT'. It means the decline of television on older distribution formats, such as cable and DTH, and its concurrent resurrection online. Speaking to Business Standard, Karan Taurani, Senior Vice-President, Elara Capital says, broadcaster-backed OTTs get 70% of viewing from catch-up TV content. This share will keep going down as OTTs expand web series movie library. TV and digital will co-exist but digital ad share will cross TV's. OTT ARPUs are still low, India is a TV payment-friendly country The OTT market in India is still nascent. As streaming companies add more originals to their library, the viewing share of TV content will come down. But the growth of TV depends on its ability to migrate its audiences and business online, irrespective of the technology that transmits the content. The future hinges on the internet. And television seems to be riding that, for now.

Sahil (@sahil071) and Siddharth (@sidbetala) hang out and discuss various ideas on this episode of Business Munchies. We're now actively sharing interesting snippets on Twitter and reels on Instagram. Follow us there to stay updated!Timeline:(00:58) - Revenue Based Financing(22:56) -  Translation Services for Movies, TV Shows on Netflix, Prime Video(33:54) - Life Skill Courses for TeenagersBusiness IdeasRevenue Based FinancingCapital is an essential commodity to grow a business. The traditional way of growing companies was Debt & Equity Investments. Debt generally comes from Banks, but they obviously don't like to take risks with unproven or unprofitable businesses. Plus putting up collateral, personal guarantees and what not.The other option is equity. In the recent years, Early stage/Growth equity has become popular thanks to the various Venture capital firms. However, you end up giving up too much equity and it prevents you from building a sustainable/profitable business. This type of equity works for ideas that don't really exist, and if they're successful, they can capture or create LARGE new markets for themselves. But, this leaves behind businesses that are profitable, but maybe not that can grow exponentially. Think D2C Brands, or SaaS businesses. How do you give them access to capital that prevents them from diluting too much equity?Enter Revenue Based Financing - This is where you get access to non-dilutive capital that can be used to grow your business and you pay a fixed fee as well as a share from the revenues to pay off your credit line. It's an interesting new lending product and we discuss the various opportunities around this. Translation Services for Netflix, Prime VideoLast week, we spoke to Abhishek Goyal, Co-founder of Cactus Communications about the large business he has built in the niche of research paper translation. We then applied the same model in the content industry where Netflix, Prime Video and other OTTs are producing so much foreign content that needs to be translated in English and also to other languages. Last year, Netflix had a shortage of agencies who could help them with this and hence had to rely on freelancers. This is an industry growing in double digits, year of year, and hence an interesting place to build a niche business. Life Skills for TeenagersOur education system is messed up and it ends up teaching A LOT of stuff that's never going to be relevant in your life and skips teaching essential life skills like Personal Finance, Health & Nutrition, Sex Ed. The idea is simple, can you build a gamified product that teaches teenagers these essential skills?

Suscríbete a nuestro newsletter: storybaker.co Hosted on Acast.
