UW-La Crosse baseball coach Chris Schwarz joined to talk about the MLB debut of Caleb Boushley. The 29-year-old Boushley, a Hortonville, Wis., native, played for Schwarz back from 2015-2017. This is the second-consecutive year Schwarz has seen one of his former players get to the Majors. Last year, it was Holmen native Taylor Kohlwey. Boushley debuted for the Brewers last Friday, entering in the eighth inning with a one-run lead against the Cubs. Schwarz tells the story, as he and about 400 other friends and family of Boushley's, including "the whole town of Hortonville," were in the stands. Before that conversation, though, we had to rant about Giannis Antetokounmpo living over a decade in Wisconsin and never having a bratwurst, plus Katrina Shankland enters the race for US House in the 3rd District, to unseat Republican Derrick Van Orden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In addition to his publishing efforts, he builds casework and Welsh stick chairs for clients all over the world. Chris' class at Fine Woodworking Live is titled: Compound-Angle Joinery, Minus the Math Mastering compound angles typically means mastering trigonometry. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Compound angles can be measured, laid out, and cut without any math—or even numbers. Chris will show you the methods he uses for replicating unusual (sometimes radical) compound angles to build his Welsh stick chairs. The method requires just a wire clothes hanger, a sliding bevel, and a ruler. (Oh, and you’ll also need to bring an open mind.) The technique allows you to replicate compound angles from photos or drawings, or to create new designs using half-scale models (made with that clothes hanger). A Life Well Designed Podcast- Lifestyle design for career, relationships, and business
ABOUT OUR GUEST Christopher Schwarz is a long-time woodworker and writer who has spent the last 20 years encouraging woodworkers to embrace more handwork in their shops. He built his first workbench when he was 11 and was introduced to handwork when his family built its first house on an Arkansas farm without electricity. After formal training as a journalist at Northwestern University, Chris worked as a newspaperman by day and studied woodworking at night at the University of Kentucky. In 1996, he was hired as managing editor of Popular Woodworking, where he helped resuscitate the magazine and introduced more handwork into its pages. He eventually became editor and began writing books and teaching woodworking classes. In 2007 he founded Lost Art Press LLC, a publishing company devoted to one thing: reviving handwork. By 2011, Lost Art Press had grown so much that Chris stepped down as editor of Popular Woodworking Magazine (he's now a contributing editor) to focus on his company full time and build furniture commissions. He's the author of several woodworking books, including “The Anarchist's Tool Chest,” “Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use,” and “Campaign Furniture.” He has also has produced more than a dozen DVDs on handwork with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks and F+W Media Inc. He lives in Fort Mitchell, Ky., with his wife and two daughters. CONNECT LostArtPress.com ABOUT THE EPISODE He was a household name in the house I grew up with, and I'm super stoked I got to chat with him & share that with you. We talk about the nature of craftsmanship, the role of design in his life, preserving the genius of history's builders, and a lot more. There's a lot in this one, so let's get to it...

Another Woodworking in America has come and gone and it's left a lasting impression. Not just on me but everybody I've talked with who attended. This is like no other woodworking show out there right now. It's not about the vendors, it's not about the lecturers, it's all about the people attending. And I'm willing to admit I was wrong about my fears of the show becoming too big too fast. Even with the introduction of power tool classes and the combining of design seminars with the handtool lectures, Woodworking in America didn't lose it's focus on what today's woodworker wants to learn and more importantly experience, and it's that experience that will keep me and so many others coming back year after year. Even if you missed the deadline for signing up to attend the classes with the likes of Frank Klausz, Jim Tolpin, Roy Underhill, Ron Herman, George Walker and Michael Fortune you can still run into them in the marketplace, and what a marketplace it was too! Imagine all the vendors you've heard the staff of Popular Woodworking go on and on about in article after article regarding the new small manufacturer who's not just selling you a great tool but are using the tools in their own shops too. Still the one thing that blows me away each time I attend, are the attendees themselves. You may arrive alone, plan a quiet weekend of great lectures and maybe buy yourself something nice but after the first class you'll suddenly find yourself having conversations with your fellow attendees as if you'd known each other for years. Don't take my word for it, ask anyone who's attended! In fact, checkout some of the great links we've been putting together from my fellow bloggers and podcasters. Here's a link to a post where we've been adding them so you can get another perspective on the event CLICK HERE. Today's episode contains snippets from a few of my classes on the first day. Including a lecture by George Walker, Chris Schwarz, Michael Fortune and Roy Underhill. Enjoy, I know I did.
As promised, today's episode is the second of two episodes featuring selected clips from some of the classes I attended at Woodworking in America 2011. There were a lot of great classes to choose from and the lecturers were equally fantastic. In today's episode I've included clips from Megan Fitzpatrick's "Your first dovetails", Charles Brock's "Sculpting by hand & power", Chris Schwarz's "12 rules for toolboxes" and Steve Shannesy's "Veneers in contemporary furniture". Let's take one more trip back to Woodworking in America 2010 and I'll share with you a few more classes I attended as part of this ongoing amazing experience. I eluded to the "mourning phase" after leaving the show and coming down off my woodworking high as we drove away. That mourning isn't quite what it was a week ago, but I still have moments where I forget I'm not more than a classroom away from one of my many new friends. Hopefully you can make it next year, same location...so you can start making your traveling plans as soon as we hear the dates. Once they're announced you'll hear it from me right away. Today's episode contains snippets from Glen Huey's "Sliding Dovetails without Fail", Marc Adam's "Amazing Router Jigs for Inlay, Ellipses and 'Faux' Dovetails" and also one more from Chris Schwarz "Scraper Planes". During my trip to Woodworking in America this year, I had opportunity to arrange a time for a conversation with Chris Schwarz for this episode of Shop Time. As the former editor of Popular Woodworking Magazine, and cofounder of Lost Art Press, Chris has an incredible influence in the woodworking community. I have seen him present at this and previous WIAs and each time it is educational, entertaining, and inspiring. Chris is one of the people I have always revered in the woodworking, it was an honor to have the opportunity to have a conversation with him about backgrounds in woodworking, tools, and a little about workbenches. If you have questions for Chris or myself, feel free to comment, Skype, or use the contact form. Be sure to check out the contact info at the end of the video for other ways to contact the show too ...

If you're a frequent visitor and remember the layout of the old site hopefully you can see a huge difference in the way things are laid out on this current version. I really like the layout of this new site and have ongoing plans to make it more informative and easier to navigate, so you'll see the occasional tweak from time-to-time. As part of my thank you to the many donators that made this happen you'll find your name listed below…it's the least I can do to show you my appreciation for your generosity! A few things have changed since the last schwag giveaway sign-up was announced in the beginning of March. First of all, the new look of Matt's Basement Workshop is up and running now. Second, as many of you have pointed out, there's no longer a dedicated sign-up page for schwag entries. So what's a potential schwag winner to do? As I explain in today's video there's a new way to get your name in the drawing, just leave a comment. That's right, no more form to fill out. No page to search for each month. Just a quick "hello" on this post and you're all set. The entry method is the only thing that's changed, the rules are still the same: 1. One entry per person each month. 2. You have 30 days to claim your prize 3. If you win, please wait 60 days before re-entering. 4. Prizes maybe substituted based on your location (i.e. if you live outside of the USA and Canada it may be cost prohibitive to mail your prize, so an alternate prize will be offered) What kind of Schwag do we have to give away? Here's what's on the list so far this month...more to come, GOOD LUCK!!! HIGHLAND WOODWORKING WOODSLICER BLADE - 2 Winners Micro Jig Zeroplay Guide Bar System - 3 Winners "Build an 18th Century Workbench" & "The Workbench" DVDs - 1 Winner "Building Kitchen Cabinets Made Simple" - 1 Winner "Blanket Chests" - 1 Winner "Stots Dovetail Maker & Router Bits" - 1 Winner "3-Flute Profile Bit" - 1 Winner "Milescraft Stubby Drill and Router Bits" - 1 Winner Postage is handled directly by many of the schwag sponsors, but it's still a big expense for those that aren't. Please consider a small donation to help offset the expense: Matt's Basement Workshop Postage Donation. Help support the show - please visit our advertisers
