The LA Superior Court is the largest single unified trial court in the United States, serving the approximately 10 million residents of Los Angeles County—the cases it handles spanning a wide range of legal matters, from civil cases to criminal cases, family law, and juvenile matters. As the state and county have grown, so has demand on the legal system. Access to justice—the inability for Americans to find and/or afford legal representation—has been called a crisis. What does that mean? What can be done about it?Stanford Law School's Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession and Legal Design Lab released a groundbreaking diagnostic report in April that outlines a blueprint for creating more innovative, modern, and accessible courts. The report marks a significant milestone in the unique partnership established in January 2024 between the Superior Court of Los Angeles County (the Court – SCLAC) and Stanford Law School. Created in collaboration with court leadership, frontline court staff, and community partners, the findings of the Stanford report demonstrate the Court's commitment to enhancing the self-represented litigant experience and its dedication to leading in justice innovation. Our guests joining Pam Karlan for this episode include Stanford Law Professor David Freeman Engstrom, the co-director of the Rhode Center whose work focuses on access to justice in the millions of low-dollar but highly consequential cases, including debt collection, eviction, foreclosure, and child support actions, that shape the lives of Americans each year;  Margaret Hagan, the executive director of the Legal Design Lab at Stanford Law School whose researches, designs, and develops new ways to make the U.S. civil justice system work better for people; and Daniel Bernal, associate director of research at the Rhode Center whose work explores the intersection of civil procedure and access to justice, with a focus on designing and testing innovations to make state courts work better for people. Links:David Freeman Engstrom  >>> Stanford Law pageMargaret Hagan  >>> Stanford Law pageDaniel Bernal  >>> Stanford Law pageA Blueprint for Expanding Access to Justice in Los Angeles Superior Court's Eviction Docket  >>>  Stanford Law pageConnect:Episode Transcripts >>> Stanford Legal Podcast WebsiteStanford Legal Podcast >>> LinkedIn PageRich Ford >>>  Twitter/XPam Karlan >>> Stanford Law School PageStanford Law School >>> Twitter/XStanford Lawyer Magazine >>> Twitter/X(00:00:00) Introductions and Tour of the LA Superior Court(00:21:25) Use of Technology and the Pain Points in Court Systems (00:27:25) National Implications of Court Innovations (00:33:00 Court as a Central Hub for Legal Problem-Solving (00:35:04) Collaboration and Future Prospects

Her research interests include information systems, finance management, organization science, and the economics of blockchain. She focuses particularly on decentralized platforms and open-source software. Summary: In this episode of Talking About Platforms, Maria discusses the platform business model as one that creates infrastructural opportunities for other agents, companies, individuals, and users to create new value. The platform operator provides the infrastructure and foundational tools for other economic agents to create derivative value and the economy around the platform. Key discussion points include: • Decentralized platforms and blockchain: Maria shares her journey into researching blockchain technology around 2017, initially learning about it from the Bitcoin perspective and then finding a community on campus discussing this technology. She notes the ethos behind it as a movement against centralization, particularly in financial transactional systems, aligning with open-source software concepts. • Research gaps and the evolution of blockchain applications: Early research focused on understanding what blockchain is and what changes it brings to existing business models. The evolution of applications, from Bitcoin to various cryptocurrencies, has been crucial in understanding blockchain's impact. • Traditional firms and blockchain: Some companies use blockchain technology to make processes more efficient, such as stablecoin companies utilizing blockchain for cheaper and more efficient payment rails. Others, like Starbucks and Nike, experiment with Web3 artifacts for community engagement and loyalty enhancement. • Open-source community and value capture: Maria discusses capturing the value of open source in the cryptocurrency space, given that a majority of cryptocurrencies have open-source code on GitHub. • Centralization in decentralized sectors: The discussion touches on the tendency toward centralization in the blockchain space, with larger entities dominating through grant programs. • Tokenization and incentivization: Blockchain introduces the concept of token organizations, digitizing transactions and exchanges, and using tokens as a payment for contributions, potentially shifting the balance between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. • Algorithmic governance and immutability: The immutability of code in blockchain systems can be a dilemma when the system scales and new market mechanisms require changes. Flexibility is needed, and sometimes centralized entities are required to make decisions. Publications & Projects Mentioned: • von Hippel, E. (2002). The Rational Reminder Podcast

Today we are joined by the Professor of Finance at the University of Utah, Matt Ringgenberg to discuss everything related to anomaly returns. Matt's research – mainly centred on the actions of short sellers – has been published in all the major journals including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies. We begin with the definition of an asset pricing anomaly before learning about the anomalies that Matt's research is primarily focused on. Then, we unpack anomaly returns and how they relate to anomaly signal information, what causes anomalies, the risk versus mispricing debate, and the barriers to accessing financial data that allow anomalies to persist. We also weigh Matt's research against its anomaly-denying counterparts, assess anomaly behaviour before and after publicly available signal information, explore models that help to predict future anomalies, and learn more about the economic mechanism underlying asset pricing anomalies. To end, we dive into Matt's paper, ‘The Loan Fee Anomaly' and explore the relationship between cross-sectional predictors and market returns, and Matt explains why long-term happiness is the only true marker of success.    Key Points From This Episode:   (0:05:07) Matt Ringgenberg defines an asset pricing anomaly and describes the anomalies his research is focused on.  (0:06:27) When anomaly returns appear relative to the release of anomaly signal information. Few of the provisions of the tax code this year have garnered as much attention from industry as the about-to-sunset pass-through deduction. In their 2017 tax overhaul, Republicans allowed owners of pass-through businesses such as partnerships, S-corporations, and LLCs to deduct 20% of certain business income from their taxes. Businesses and their lobbyists say it gives those firms small and large parity with traditional corporations. Critics say its benefits largely flow to the wealthy. That deduction—along with the rest of the individual provisions of that 2017 law known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act—expires at the end of 2025 absent congressional action and President Donald Trump's signature. On this episode of Talking Tax, Bloomberg Tax reporter Zach Cohen spoke with two guests about what the deduction does and prospects for renewal by Congress this year. Jeff Brabant is a vice president of federal government relations at the National Federation of Independent Businesss, and Elena Spatoulas Patel is a nonresident senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center and the Sorenson Assistant Professor in the Division of Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations at the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business. Life well-being is achieved through living a satisfying life full of meaning and purpose. Money plays a role in various domains of life, including financial, social, cultural, and personal. Envy and other emotions related to social status can impact happiness. Knowing your comparison group and focusing on your own achievements can lead to greater contentment. Self-control is essential when saving for the future, and it's important not to dip into capital except when necessary. Finding a balance between saving and spending is crucial, as some people become so focused on saving that they forget to enjoy their wealth. You don't think about that right? Everybody thinks about having a work mentor. We have mentors at work and I had  done this in a way before I retired. I invited people who had retired to lunch and I said Okay what do I need to know about retirement? But the thing is everybody's retirement journey is so different and so some would say things like There's nothing to know about retirement. It's it's so easy and it's so great and there's nothing to learn. And other people would say Well, you know I struggled a lot with the schedule." And so interestingly, my retirement mentor has been the same career mentor that I had and she retired about five years ahead of me. I admire what she has done and so I continue to use her as my retirement mentor." On Trying New Things "So first for about a year a half, you just have a great big honeymoon. It's just fun, fun, fun, fun, fun. And then you start looking at different things to do. And then you start feeling a loss. Well, I think I simultaneously, like on day one, jumped in on all three things simultaneously. So I did vacation, in fact, and since we retired in May, I've been on nine different trips and I've been to Colorado many times, that's where my daughters are, Norway, Michigan, New York, Galapagos Islands. So we did lots of honeymooning and vacation. And then at the same time, I did a lot of experimentation. I took some new classes through a retirement group. I explored some new things, with my husband, we explored some new faith communities. We hired a personal trainer. I got into yoga. I started to deeply understand our financial planning. I had known it as a superficial level.

Why Taking a Timeout in the NBA Might Not Be the Best Idea

Much of sports is a gamble. There's a saying: “Any team can win any game on any given day.” Almost nothing, no outcome, is guaranteed in sports—and that's part of the fun of watching and playing. But players and coaches want to eliminate as many variables as possible, trying to leave less up to chance. And that is where statistics come in. It might seem like a good idea to call a timeout in the NBA when the opposing team is on a scoring run—it could slow their momentum, change the energy of the game, right?  Research from a University of Denver data analytics professor indicates otherwise. In this episode, Emma chats with Daniels College of Business professor Ryan Elmore about his work in sports analytics—and why taking a timeout in the midst of an NBA game might not be the solution to slowing an opposing team's momentum.  Ryan Elmore is an associate professor in the Department of Business Information and Analytics at the Daniels College of Business. Prior to Daniels, he worked as a senior scientist in the Computational Sciences Center at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado. He has also held positions at the Australian National University, Colorado State University and Slide, Inc. Elmore's research interests include statistics in sports, nonparametric statistical methods, and energy efficient high-performance computing. His work in sports statistics has led to the position of Associate Editor for the Journal of Quantitative Analysis of Sports (2015–present) and consultant to the Denver Nuggets professional basketball team. More Information:  “The causal effect of a timeout at stopping an opposing run in the NBA”  “Bang the Can Slowly: An Investigation into the 2017 Houston Astros”

S6E5. What Can We Do About the Student Loan Crisis? with Adam Looney

Eccles Business Buzz

As we continue exploring the topic of economic equality and the different factors that influence a fair and equitable economic experience, today we are tackling the topic of student loan debt. Americans owe $1.77 trillion in federal and private student loan debt as of the second quarter of 2023, and questions about whether and how borrowers should be required to repay that debt have become part of an ongoing national conversation.  Here to help us unpack all of this is Adam Looney. Adam is a professor and executive director of the Mariner S. Eccles Institute for Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations here at the Eccles School. He is a nationally recognized expert on student debt, having testified before Congress multiple times on the topic of student debt forgiveness. With host Frances Johnson, Adam shares his thoughts on how we got to this place of burdensome student debt. He'll dive into the quest for equity in higher education accessibility, repayment options, and his thoughts on student loan forgiveness.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University.FM.Episode Quotes:Can we make higher education equitable and efficient?[23:48] The reality is that college is a very good investment for a very large share of Americans. And I think the problem is identifying programs and institutions that are effective at serving disadvantaged, low-income students who historically had not enrolled in very high numbers. If we could have increased enrollment at good-quality programs and provided better guidance to steer students into programs that they can complete and that lead to good-quality jobs, then I don't think we would have a repayment crisis. Why do we have student loan programs?[08:36] We have a student loan program for two reasons. One is to help people pursue. a college degree and graduate programs. And second, to make access to college more equitable in the U.S. and around the world, whether you go to college, whether you complete college, whether you go to graduate school, is closely related to family income, your family background, and whether your parents went to college. The uneven burden of student debt[11:18] On average, college students do well because student loan borrowers, to a large degree, reflect who goes to college; the outcomes of student loan borrowers look a lot like the outcomes of typical college students. And so, it's important to remember that student loan borrowers are more likely to have a job. They earn more, they're more likely to be able to own a house, and they're more likely to become married. So, it's not a universal impediment to being able to launch a career and a life. Why does Adam think that college is a high-quality investment?[10:10] I think college is a very high-quality investment. It is a key way where Americans move up the economic ladder. It's a vehicle of social mobility. It's obvious that there are huge inequities in terms of who gets to go to college, who's able to persist and complete a degree, and who gets to go to graduate school. But it seems like access to financial aid alone is not able to overcome those barriers and, in fact, seems to have made many millions of these often disadvantaged students worse off.Show Links:Adam Looney LinkedInAdam Looney - The David Eccles School of BusinessAdam Looney | Brookings

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Interviews with 97 AI Researchers: Quantitative Analysis, published by Maheen Shermohammed on February 2, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TLDR: Last year, Vael Gates interviewed 97 AI researchers about their perceptions on the future of AI, focusing on risks from advanced AI. Among other questions, researchers were asked about the alignment problem, the problem of instrumental incentives, and their interest in AI alignment research. Following up after 5-6 months, 51% reported the interview had a lasting effect on their beliefs. Our new report analyzes these interviews in depth. We describe our primary results and some implications for field-building below. Check out the full report (interactive graph version), a complementary writeup describing whether we can predict a researcher's interest in alignment, and our results below! [Link to post on LessWrong] Overview This report (interactive graph version) is a quantitative analysis of 97 interviews conducted in Feb-March 2022 with machine learning researchers, who were asked about their perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI) now and in the future, with particular focus on risks from advanced AI systems. Of the interviewees, 92 were selected from NeurIPS or ICML 2021 submissions, and 5 were informally recommended experts. For each interview, a transcript was generated, and common responses were identified and tagged to support quantitative analysis. The transcripts, as well as a qualitative walkthrough of common perspectives, are available at Interviews. Several core questions were asked in these interviews: When advanced AI (~AGI) would be developed (note that this term was imprecisely defined in the interviews) A probe about the alignment problem: “What do you think of the argument ‘highly intelligent systems will fail to optimize exactly what their designers intended them to, and this is dangerous'?” A probe about instrumental incentives: “What do you think about the argument: ‘highly intelligent systems will have an incentive to behave in ways to ensure that they are not shut off or limited in pursuing their goals, and this is dangerous'?” Whether interviewees were interested in working on AI alignment, and why or why not Whether interviewees had heard of AI safety or AI alignment Findings Summary Some key findings from our primary questions of interest: Most participants (75%), at some point in the conversation, said that they thought humanity would achieve advanced AI (imprecisely labeled “AGI” for the rest of this summary) eventually, but their timelines to AGI varied. Within this group: 32% thought it would happen in 0-50 years 40% thought 50-200 years 18% thought 200+ years and 28% were quite uncertain, reporting a very wide range. (These sum to more than 100% because several people endorsed multiple timelines over the course of the conversation.) (Source) Among participants who thought humanity would never develop AGI (22%), the most commonly cited reason was that they couldn't see AGI happening based on current progress in AI. (Source) Participants were pretty split on whether they thought the alignment problem argument was valid. Some common reasons for disagreement were (Source): A set of responses that included the idea that AI alignment problems would be solved over the normal course of AI development (caveat: this was a very heterogeneous tag). Pointing out that humans have alignment problems too (so the potential risk of the AI alignment problem is capped in some sense by how bad alignment problems are for humans). AI systems will be tested (and humans will catch issues and implement safeguards before systems are rolled out in the real world). The objective function will not be designed in a way that causes the alignment problem / dangerous consequences of the alignment problem to arise. Perfe...

Tune in to hear:- What might the personality of an ideal hire for a leadership position in asset management look like?- How can one measure things like emotional intelligence and curiosity that can seem kind of ethereal or hard to get your arms around?- Has Michael come across any counterintuitive, or surprising, discoveries in his research as he's tried to fill talent gaps in the financial services industry?- How does a company best walk the line between having adequate conflict, to fully vet and consider all perspectives, but not such excessive conflict that it spills over into ugliness?- What does the concept of “psychological safety” mean and how can one achieve this perspective throughout their organization?- How do we get beyond just paying lip service to wanting productive conflict in an organization and actually get to a point where we can have these conversations?- What are some common behavioral traps within decision making processes used by asset managers, and how does Michael council people to begin to overcome these?- Is there really something magical about the human touch that is additive to the investment decision making process or can we simply automate these things away?- How might we build out a more modular model that takes the best of quant, analysis and data and the best of human decision making and merges these aspects together?- What has come into focus for Michael since his ALS diagnosis?Books:https://www.amazon.com/Learn-Sustain-Long-Term-Economic-Growth/dp/1944960058https://www.amazon.com/Get-Work-Future-Michael-Falk/dp/1704375827ALS Charities: https://iamals.orghttps://lesturnerals.orgRecent Writing:https://investmentsandwealth.org/getattachment/2166018f-6fbd-4389-ad61-8352e53d7537/IWM20NovDec-EverythingYouNeedToKnowAboutInvesting.pdfhttps://www.cfainstitute.org/research/foundation/2021/capitalism-for-everyoneCompliance Code: 1740-BCI-5/27/2021

Today Mike speaks with Professor Aswath Damodaran about his book, Narrative and Numbers: The Value of Stories in Business. Aswath is a professor of finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University and his career-spanning work on valuation, portfolio management and corporate finance cut across numerous books and popular lectures online, and his research has appeared in many prestigious academic journals including the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and the Journal of Financial Economics. This conversation couldn't be more timely given all the hoopla around Gamestop and the like. Stories are driving the prices of those high flying stocks—narratives about what's happening and why are at the core of all this mess. In fact, that's always in some sense true with investing, but this is a very stark example. Follow us on social media for book reviews and so much more. We cut away the fluff and tell you whether a book is worth pursuing to further your investing knowledge with irreverent insights and practical analysis.
