BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band that was formed in 2010 and debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment.[5] The septet—consisting of members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—co-writes and co-produces much of their own output. Originally a hip hop group, their musical style has since evolved to incorporate a wider range of genres. Their lyrics often contain personal and social commentary on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their work also frequently references literature and psychological concepts and includes an alternative universe storyline.After debuting in 2013 with their single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, BTS released their first Korean-language studio album, Dark & Wild, and Japanese-language studio album, Wake Up, in 2014. The group's second Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea. In this episode, SSFS Head of School Dr. Rodney Glasgow speaks with SSFS Alumni Michel Ruiz-Fuentes and Frank Sheffield who won the national Call for Kindness competition sponsored by Riley's Way Foundation in May of 2021. The competition challenges teens to apply for grants that fund initiatives that strengthen their communities and inspire kindness. They were the only two recipients in the State of Maryland and were part of a small group of 22 inspiring teens across the country who received the award. Listen to the episode to hear Michel and Frank speak about the competition, their work with Mary Center in Washington DC through Candid Community Care, and their plans for the future.

As a father and educator, I missed out on the opportunity to speak to my 2020 graduates due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  This is my message and love for them.  Let's discuss wigs, relationship moochers, and the bold faith that is required to take the long way home.   

The high school class of 2020 is bound for the history books. They were born in the wake of 9-11. Entered kindergarten during the Great Recession. Had their senior years interrupted by a global pandemic. And have now graduated into an uncertain future amid mass COVID-19 deaths, record unemployment and civic upheaval in the streets. In this episode we're telling the stories of students coming of age in a moment where the world feels both ‘on hold' and ‘on fire.'

We're also continuing our conversation from last week and sharing Gladis's story on how she got through a pivotal moment in her life.Gladis is a first generation college graduate in her family. She attended undergrad at San Jose State University where she got her degree in advertising and business.  She was also a part of the women's soccer team at SJSU. In 2018, she received her MBA and began her journey as a Human Resource Generalist at Adobe.
