A replay of our 2021 episode with author and journalist Maria Sherman! Throughout history, boy bands have been a massively lucrative enterprise for the music industry, thanks to their main demographic of teen girls. Join us to really learn about the importance of boy bands to pop culture and their dark history. Heartthrob boy bands + adoring fangirls = big money! And this is where things get shady. Behind every successful boy band is a man with industry know-how (and sometimes even nefarious intentions.) We're joined by Maria Sherman, author of Larger Than Life: A History of Boy Bands, to explore the dark history of boy bands and the men who pull the strings – from Maurice Starr's shady contracts with New Kids on the Block and New Edition to Lou Pearlman using Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC as the front of a Ponzi scheme. We also discuss their impact on pop culture which led to the rise of One Direction (thanks to Simon Cowell) and BTS (a la Big Hit Entertainment.) All of this to say, are boy bands inherently sexist? And at the end of the day, do we even care? Find Maria Sherman on Twitter and Instagram for fun boy band knowledge more! This is a music commentary podcast based on pre-existing knowledge and facts cited below. Where is BTS now? The rise and fall of BTS was fast and huge. From south korean mega band to world wide sensation, BTS took over the world. But with military service looming, is this the end of BTS? #bts #btsarmy #whathappenedto #wherearetheynow #riseandfall BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan, or the Bangtan Boys, emerged from Big Hit Entertainment in South Korea in 2013. Comprising of seven members - RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, the group redefined K-pop, crossing boundaries with their powerful lyrics, innovative music style, and intense performances. Their raw discussions on socio-cultural issues set them apart, resonating with the youth worldwide, leading to an immense global fanbase known as 'ARMY.' BTS quickly gained popularity in South Korea with their debut album "2 Cool 4 Skool." Their breakthrough internationally came with their second full album, "Wings," in 2016, marking their place on Billboard 200. The group achieved an unprecedented level of global fame, breaking numerous records. Their album "Love Yourself: Tear" (2018) debuted at number one on Billboard 200, a first for any Korean act. The group's rise reached new heights in 2020 when they released their single "Dynamite," which became their first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their influence extended beyond music, impacting fashion, language learning, and tourism, and advocating for mental health awareness and youth empowerment. However, around 2023, their activities began to slow down. Members began pursuing individual projects, exploring solo music careers, and focusing on personal lives, following the South Korean tradition of mandatory military service. Their gradual withdrawal from group activities marked the beginning of the end of an era, with their last album as a complete group, marking the pinnacle of their illustrious journey. Despite the hiatus, BTS' legacy continues to reverberate through global music, breaking cultural barriers, leaving a lasting impact on millions of fans. Their story, a testament to hard work, resilience, and the power of music, sets a precedent for future artists worldwide. Their fall from active music-making is viewed more as a graceful bow out than a tragic collapse, given their immeasurable contributions and influence. We've talked about YG, we've talked about JYP, and now HYBE got us to put our investigative research hats on! This is a really long episode, but there's just so much to cover that we could simply not leave out as it's all a part of HYBE's path to global takeover. Instead of making this episode multiple parts, we'll let you decide where/when to stop and when to keep going! We're covering HYBE's existence in three stages: 1. The days of Big Hit Entertainment: HYBE (as its previous iteration as Big Hit Entertainment) gave birth to BTS, Tomorrow X Together, 8Eight, Lee Hyun, and GLAM. We also go into Bang Sihyuk and his evolution to become Hitman Bang in this section. 2. How Big Hit Entertainment became HYBE Corporation: from about 2019 until 2022, Big Hit Entertainment laid down the groundwork to become HYBE and secure its position as the biggest player in K-Pop. Acquisitions, partnerships, new labels, technology investments, and so much more. 3. HYBE's Expansion Era: the moves and shakes we've seen from HYBE this year showed us that the question is no longer whether HYBE trying to take over the whole k-pop industry. Now it's evident that they're going for domination at a global scale. As always, please forgive any mispronunciations! We hope you enjoyed this episode and our mix of Latin-based western observations! If you did, please don't forget to subscribe and leave us 5-star reviews wherever possible. Spotify

BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band formed in 2010 and debuting in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment. The septet—consisting of members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—co-writes and co-produces much of their own material. Originally a hip hop group, their musical style has evolved to incorporate a wide range of genres; their lyrics have often discussed mental health, the troubles of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the journey towards self-love, and individualism. Their work also frequently references literature, philosophy and psychological concepts, and includes an alternate universe storyline. After launching in 2013 with their single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, BTS respectively released their first Korean-language studio album, Dark & Wild, and Japanese-language studio album, Wake Up, in 2014. The group's second Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea. By 2017, BTS had crossed into the global music market, leading the Korean wave into the United States and breaking several sales records. They became the first Korean ensemble to receive a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single "Mic Drop", as well as the first act from South Korea to top the Billboard 200 with their studio album Love Yourself: Tear (2018). BTS became one of the few groups since the Beatles in 1966–1968 with four US number-one albums in less than two years, and Love Yourself: Answer (2018) was the first Korean album certified Platinum by the RIAA. In 2020, BTS became the first all-South Korean act to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 with their Grammy-nominated single "Dynamite". Their follow-up releases "Savage Love", "Life Goes On", "Butter", and "Permission to Dance" made them the quickest act to earn four US number-one singles since Justin Timberlake in 2006.As of 2022, BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history, having sold in excess of 30 million albums via the Circle Chart, and their studio album Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) is the best-selling album of all time in South Korea. They are the first non-English-speaking and Asian act to hold sold-out concerts at Wembley Stadium and the Rose Bowl (Love Yourself World Tour in 2019), and were named the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) Global Recording Artist of the Year for both 2020 and 2021. The group's many accolades include multiple American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and nominations for two Grammy Awards. In 2017, they partnered with UNICEF to establish the Love Myself anti-violence campaign, going on to address three sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. Featured on Time's international cover as "Next Generation Leaders" and dubbed the "Princes of Pop", BTS has also appeared on Time's lists of the 25 most influential people on the internet (2017–2019) and the 100 most influential people in the world (2019), and in 2018 became the youngest recipients of the Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea for their contributions in spreading Korean culture and language.

Beck, A Tribe Called Quest, Rage Against the Machine, Кейт Буш, Devo, Фела Кути, New York Dolls, MC5, Judas Priest и Дайон Уорвик. Их поздравил сэр Пол Маккартни, исполнивший вместе с группой несколько ее хитов: "Best of You", "My Hero" и "Everlong". BTS. For new music, the latest Tiny Desk (home) concerts and more, sign up for the NPR Music newsletter, sent weekly: npr.org/nprmusicnewsletter Stephen Thompson | Sept. 21, 2020 We've been trying to make a BTS Tiny Desk concert happen for years now — even gaming out ways we might move Bob Boilen's desk far enough forward to accommodate the superstar Korean boy band's dance moves. In the end, it took a global pandemic — and the launch of Tiny Desk (home) concerts back in March — to make something happen. With BTS cooped up in Seoul, the group held true to the series's spirit by convening a live band for its Tiny Desk debut, and even arranged to perform in a workspace with a music-friendly backdrop: the record store VINYL & PLASTIC by Hyundai Card in BTS's hometown. Opening with this summer's inescapable "Dynamite" — the group's first single to hit No. 1 in the U.S., as well as its first song to be fully recorded in English — BTS leaned hard into the new track's celebratory, "Uptown Funk"-adjacent vibes. From there, the group dipped into its back catalog, seizing on the opportunity to showcase its quieter side while (mostly) staying uncharacteristically seated. The breezily propulsive "Save ME," from 2016, ultimately gave way to a full-on power ballad in 2017's reflective "Spring Day." The latter track seemed especially true to BTS's hopeful nature: Introduced with a few optimistic words from rapper and singer RM ("It's been the roughest summer ever, but we know that spring will come"), the song reflects on a need to wait out hard times, even as the weight of present-day pain feels oppressive. BTS had intended to spend 2020 delighting the BTS Army in arenas around the world, only to spend these last few months performing in isolation. Released on the last day of a grim season, "Spring Day" provides a nice reminder of what awaits us on the other side. We just have to get through fall and winter first. SET LIST "Dynamite" "Save ME" "Spring Day" MUSICIANS J-Hope: vocals; SUGA: vocals; Jungkook: vocals; V: vocals; Jin: vocals; RM: vocals; Jimin: vocals; KHAN: drums; DOCSKIM: keyboard; Kim Kiwook: bass; Shyun: guitar CREDITS Video and Audio by: Big Hit Entertainment; Producer: Stephen Thompson; Audio Mastering Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Video Producer: Morgan Noelle Smith; Associate Producer: Bobby Carter; Subtitles by Renee Klahr; Executive Producer: Lauren Onkey; Senior VP, Programming: Anya Grundmann ABOUT THE SERIES The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Although BTS debuted under what was then a rather small entertainment agency (Big Hit Entertainment) in 2013, they showed us that they were the exception and not the rule. The septet stood out for many reasons, even as a rookie group. Apart from having more rappers than a regular K-pop group, there have been many obvious ways that hip-hop has influenced their artistry. It has been discussed before that they were originally meant to launch as a hip-hop group rather than a K-pop one, and even though the latter route was chosen, the culture of hip-hop never left the table. Má teorie o pilířích K-Popu a díky čemu K-Pop vlastně funguje...
Lovato told Apple Music that Grande “started writing this song and immediately thought of me, so when she gave it to me, I was like, ‘We should just sing this together.'” From Publisher: Vulture Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande & J Balvin is about to Reap Millions in HYBE's Deal to Buy Ithaca Holdings As part of the $1.05 billion deal, Scooter Braun is paying more than $40 million in equity to artists & staff out of his stake. HYBE's deal to buy Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings will award Braun's artists and staff with more than $40 million in equity, including shares to Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, J Balvin and Demi Lovato, according to a corporate filing from HYBE, the publicly traded company formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment. In case you are keeping track: Ariana Grande Is Ready for Sky-High Heels Again | Vogue Admit it, for the past year, your heels have been collecting dust in your closet. And it makes total sense: Why bother with torturous stilettos when a comfy flat will do the trick? That being said, spring is all about re-emergence, which means the return of heels. Celebrities like Katie Holmes, Dua Lipa, and Cardi B have all slipped into them again on the streets—and now Ariana Grande is, too. In fact, her towering pair is even fresh off the runway. Taking to Instagram to flex a glamorous Monday look for no occasion at all, the singer wore a glitzy gold Versace mini dress from the Italian label's recent fall 2021 collection . On the second slide of her slideshow, Grande also showed a closer look at her shoes: staggering, chunky platform heels with a squared toe from the same show. Now, a platform has a little more comfort than a single-sole heel—but Grande's shoes are still quite extreme . But let's not forget that Grande is a diehard heel lover, best known for her impressive collection of thigh-high boots. She's clearly testing out a new look for spring here, and the square-toe shape happens to be a huge trend this season, so bonus! Does this mean you, too, have to start wearing skyscraper footwear? Of course not, but Grande is proving that a huge heel does bring your fit to epic new heights—it's worth considering again. From Publisher: Vogue Ariana Grande is at the top of her game. Why is she joining ‘The Voice'? The Voice is one of many TV singing competitions, but it stands out from its competitors because of the tryout portion of the show, dubbed the “blind auditions.” While a person tries out, the judges are in chairs facing the audience, so they don't see what the singer looks like until they confirm they want the singer on their team by pressing a button that turns their chair around. For the upcoming 21st season, singers tried out in front of four judges: Ariana Grande, John Legend, Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson. Ariana Grande has made music for close to a decade, yet it still feels too early in her career for her to join a show like this — her thank u, next album charted at number one on the Billboard 200 and she's cast in the upcoming 2021 star-studded Netflix film Don't Look Up . There's still so much left for her to give before it makes sense for her to take this career pivot. Grande hasn't even reached anywhere near her “flop era” or her “ post-flop era” comeback yet.

We're talking about our favorite subject – boy bands! Throughout history, boy bands have been a massively lucrative enterprise for the music industry, thanks to their main demographic of teen girls. Heartthrob boy bands + adoring fangirls = big money! And this is where things get shady. Behind every successful boy band is a man with industry know-how (and sometimes even nefarious intentions.) We're joined by Maria Sherman, author of Larger Than Life: A History of Boy Bands, to explore the dark history of boy bands and the men who pull the strings – from Maurice Starr's shady contracts with New Kids on the Block and New Edition to Lou Perarlamn using Backstreet Boys and Nsync as the front of a Ponzi scheme. Merriam-Webster defines esoteric thusly: designed for or understood by the specially initiated alone. This week's album choice, on the surface, may seem to be the antithesis of esoteric. But it is with this definition in mind that we take a look at one of, if not the biggest bands in the world: BTS. BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band that debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment. The septet—composed of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—co-writes and co-produces much of their own output. Originally a hip-hop group, their musical style has evolved to include a wide range of genres. Their lyrics, often focused on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their work features references to literature and psychological concepts and includes an alternate universe storyline. The group has released several albums and performed on several world tours. Here's the thing about BTS: Despite being second only to Drake as the best-selling artists worldwide, here in the US they get very little radio play. The band sings in their native Korean, making the dense imagery and storytelling of the songs largely inaccessible to many. Joining us to take a listen to their fourth EP, The Most Beautiful Moment In Life Part 2, is super fan, Kerry Schultz. In addition to being a card-carrying member of the BTS Army, Kerry is an English major who takes a more poetic approach to her translation and interpretation of the band's lyrics. You can check out her Facebook page President Kim's BTS Lyrics Spot. Kerry helps us unpack all that is going on with both the lyrics and the band's storytelling. Hopefully, we all walk away from this episode with a better understanding of the Bangtan Boys and the many layers of their music. We feel they fit in with our theme, but that's just us. It's up to you the listener to decide if we've helped unlock the mystery of their appeal or simply jumped the shark in our quest for more listens. An Album a Day is my exploration into the Korean music scene. This podcast will cover mainstream, indie and some underground artists within the scene and provide both factual and opinionated commentary. The biggest benefit to sharing my thoughts this way is that it will hopefully expose you to more great music and exploration of your own.Welcome back to Rookie Roundup for 2020 Korean idol groups. Its a day for the gentlemen only, as todays lineup is ELAST, ENHYPEN, Ghost9, H&D (??,??), and Lucy, right after the drop.Youre tuned into An Album a Day. Show start.Hey yall, curl up with a soft blanket, good book, and a cuppa (British: cup of) for the first group, ELast. Making their debut on June 9, 2020, on E Entertainment, this eight-member boy group is revitalizing. Think crisp winter air, morning rain, or how your nostrils kind of open up when toothpaste first hits your mouth. On two albums five months apart, the young men have a wonderful ballad sound. Dont get me wrong, they made the mandatory pop track for their second album, but thats it -- theres only one track squeezed between soothing tracks and delightful vocals. ELast, short for everlasting, took to YouTube to build a respectable fanbase before their debut, uploading weekly videos to showcase their unique colors. And, much like many other groups, well be talking about from third and fourth generations, some of their members have had survival show experience. Ultimately, if you wish to feel like youre in a K-drama montage, go with these guys.I genuinely didnt realize that ENHYPEN only made their debut on November 30, 2020. I swore that their name was making the rounds for much longer than that. This is possibly because the seven-member boy band was first a part of the survival show I-Land? Whatever the case may be, within the fandom and commentary spaces I frequent, this group is talked about. Developed on Belift Lab, a collaboration between CJ ENM and Big Hit Entertainment, their debut EP sounds wonderful -- production is crisp and clean and the young gents sit within the tracks, never chasing after it nor being overpowered by the music. Ah yes, their name. At one point, they were going with the English letters EN and the hyphen symbol, but their name is to imply connection. I dont know what the en is for, and I dont think I ever will, but I enjoyed listening to them. That was not an intended joke.Ghost9 of Maroo Entertainment was formed in 2019 but made their debut on September 23, 2020. The nine guys vocally sound like ENHYPEN but the music production isnt the same at all. Thats the major distinction for many artists on smaller labels -- the vocals might excel but the access to more competitive production sounds is limited. It was so off-putting for me on most of their tracks that I could have honestly gone with an acapella album from them. They come in with enticing introductions and then drop into an area that isnt fully realized but it didnt stop Ghost9 from earning a respectable peak position on the Korean music charts with their first of two EPs. In short, this is a group with awesome singers but in order to stick around long-term, their label will have to bring in production reinforcement. Well, this is interesting. H&D (??,??) is a subunit of boy group BAE173 who made their debut on April 21, 2020. The duo consists of Lee Han Gyul, who has a singing voice thats more mature than his age, and rapper Nam Do Hyon. If you look up more information about the two of them, I can promise you that Han Gyuls story will get a reaction out of you. That being said, they are a great combo and everything they released prior to their BAE173 debut is worth your time.Last, is four-member live band Lucy who made their debut on May 8, 2020, on Mystic Story. Named after a neighborhood dog that would visit them to play in between practicing their craft, Lucy accompanies...
This podcast will cover mainstream, indie and some underground artists within the scene and provide both factual and opinionated commentary. The biggest benefit to sharing my thoughts this way is that it will hopefully expose you to more great music and exploration of your own.Several days have passed and were back with the show. In a world where fast and consistent content rules the land, and attention spans are shorter than ever, I thank you for being a positive audience and your willingness to wait for me. Now, on this National Teachers Day, allow me to turn your attention back to where we left off, class. After Schools discography continues, right after the drop. Youre tuned into An Album a Day. Show start.Hey yall, we have reached the debut studio album, Virgin, a whopping 13 track experience on both Pledis Entertainment and LOEN Entertainment labels. LOEN is now Kakao M and likely assumed co-publishing responsibilities for this album because of a long-standing positive reputation. While Pledis was relatively new on the scene with a year 2007 founding, LOEN was established in 1978. Interestingly enough, Pledis is almost like the new kid on the block again, as it was acquired by Big Hit Entertainment in May 2020. Back to the album. The studio album is less than an hour long but delivers a solid experience. Approaching this April 29, 2011 release date began in 2009, thus setting the scene for anticipation. The groups ninth member, E-Young, was introduced during this era and there were other big moments for After School, such as their leaders debut solo project and the first full-length album from subunit Orange Caramel. The group was riding a buzz wave and audiences wanted to hear what was next. Nine new tracks were released, including two as solos for members Raina and Jungah; and three songs were re-recordings. Their third single, Shampoo, was added as a radio edit, too. In terms of singles from the album, technically November 2009s Because of You is first and March 2010s Bang! is second. The songs were added to the studio album to create a solid thread, as if to say, Hey, we know what vibe we want to give you and weve been consistent about it for years. Okay, maybe not to say that specifically but it was clever planning on the production side. By grabbing older tracks and incorporating them into After Schools first studio album, it shows that the direction for their sound, the colors they were intended to create, was solid from the get-go. There wasnt any experimentation prior that would tarnish the potential of the album Virgin, is what Im saying.Nonetheless, I didnt wholeheartedly enjoy it. The music production during this time in pop music was hollow. A lot of music sounded like Norway-founded, Los Angeles-based music production duo Stargate (if you need a point of reference, think Beyoncs Irreplaceable or much of Rihannas Good Girl Gone Bad studio album). They were sought after and produced simple songs that put guitars in the spotlight but not a bass. This production style caters to crafting for lyrics and not for musicality. As a music producer whos focused on instrumentals, I dont prioritize space for lyrics, but for the various instruments to do the talking. I acknowledge my bias in this review but I also admit boredom with hearing limitations in vocal arrangements as well for After School. They did not attempt anything too drastic. Suffice it to say, if it aint broke, dont fix it, is the standing motif for this group. That aside, K-pop fans on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being essential listening and 1 not worth mentioning, the A3Day rating on this is a 5. The energy of the album is consistent and though there is a perceived tendency to end on a mellow track, the closing track brings the continuity full-circle. Some versions will have the...
