Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Nelson DeMille (1943-2024) Nelson DeMille, who died on September 17, 2024 at the age of 81, was one of the leading best-selling authors from the 1980s into the 21st Century. Among his novels are The General's Daughter, the Gold Coast, Plum Island and Word of Honor. Three of his novels were turned into films. On June 13, 1997, Richard A. Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky interviewed Nelson DeMille while he was on tour for Plum Island. In the discussion, we focused on that book, as well as several others. This is the first of two interviews with Nelson DeMille. Nelson DeMille would return to the character of Paul Brenner from The General's Daughter in Up Country in 2002, he would return to John Corey from Plum Island in The Lions Game in 2000, and in seven other novels. In all, there would be 27 novels, plus two written in collaboration with his son, Alex DeMille, two early novels written under a pseudonym plus several works of short fiction. Three of his books, most notably The General's Daughter, became films. This interview was digitized, remastered and edited by Richard Wolinsky in November 2024. Echo and other faults exist on the original recording. Complete Interview Barry Lopez (1945-2020) Barry Lopez (1945-2020) in conversation with Richard Wolinsky on June 11, 2004 while he was on tour for Resistance, a collection of interrelated short stories with the theme of resistance. Barry Lopez, who died on December 25, 2020 at the age of 75, was a master of the short form, both fiction and non-fiction. His non-fiction, collected in such books as Arctic Dreams and his last published work, Horizon, and his fiction in collections such as Light Action in the Caribbean, focused on exploration, biology, morality, transcendence, biology, politics, philosophy and much more. In this second of three interview, he discusses how he came to write this particular book, and then moves on to discussing what in 2004 was an unnamed threat of totalitarianism. Today, of course, it's named. He speaks of the inattentiveness of the masses as well, which also has great resonance today. Barry Lopez Wikipedia page. Complete Interview. Send us a Text Message. It's hard to believe, but back-to-school is just around the corner. And the start of a new school year can stir up a lot of emotions in kids, especially those who are starting school for the first time. Therefore, it's nice to have some books to incorporate into your speech therapy sessions that help relieve their stress and show how school can be a fun and safe place for kids. Two books we think do a great job of showcasing those ideas are Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen and School's First Day of School by Adam Rex. So, in today's episode, we're doing a back-to-school this or that edition and sharing how we're using these books in our speech therapy sessions. Family isn't always your relatives. It's the ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile, and who love you no matter what.” -Unknown Teachers do so much more than just teach academics. They build a sense of community within their classrooms, creating a home away from home where they make their students feel safe, included, and loved. With its heartfelt message and colorfully whimsical illustrations, “Our Class is a Family” is a book that will help build and strengthen that class community. Kids learn that their classroom is a place where it's safe to be themselves, it's okay to make mistakes, and it's important to be a friend to others. Tune in to hear fascinating stories, including: how he almost went on for Al Pacino, what it was like acting with Larry David, how he got Covid at a theater in March 2020, a mask mishap during PRAYER FOR THE FRENCH REPUBLIC, the power of Larry Kramer's JUST SAY NO, working on THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL with Tony Randall, the loyalty of Denzel Washington, the Rubik's Cube of INDECENT, and so much more.
An accomplished actress, singer, author, and educator, Alexandra Silber delves into her extensive career as she shares her origin story, revealing that her early influences, particularly her deep connection to literature and theater, emerged from the challenges of her father's illness when she was a child. Believing in the transformative power of storytelling, it became her sanctuary to explore profound questions about life and death, including reading (listening to, and watching) “The Secret Garden” and how it impacted her life. She opens up about her GI battles, her father's death, and dealing with grief through acting. Currently starring in the limited off-Broadway run of "Our Class", Alexandra explores the unique chemistry and connection formed between actors on stage, its significance in creating authentic performances, and why having a community with your co-actors is necessary. She also talks about the unique “exit practices” in their production, her perspective on being a multidimensional artist–underscoring the importance of exploring different creative outlets, especially for aspiring artists. Alexandra Silber is a Grammy nominated artist who has performed roles on Broadway, the West End and on TV and film, and many concert stages. She had her Broadway debut in 2011 in the production of “Master Class”. She also starred as Tzeitel in the 2015 revival of “Fiddler on the Roof", and on the West End, she created the role of Laura Fairlie in “The Woman in White”, played Hodel in the 2007 production of “Fiddler on the Roof", and was Julie Jordan in “Carousel”. She's also an author, with "After Anatevka” as her debut novel, and her memoir "White Hot Grief Parade". She's currently starring in the limited off-Broadway run of “Our Class”. In our last episode before the 9/11 Anniversary, Earl “Chico” Porter shares his inspirational story, and mission, to help veterans contemplating suicide. Part of this was to take on a winter SOBO hike of the Appalachian Trail, starting on the 20th Anniversary in 2021. From the author and illustrator of Our Class is a Family, this heartwarming picture book helps teachers in welcoming their new group of students on the first day of school. Through a letter written from the teacher's point of view, students are given the message that their new teacher is someone they will get to form a special bond with. Their teacher is not only there to help them academically, but also to cheer them on, and to provide a caring, safe environment for them to learn and grow. During back to school time, teachers are wanting to set the tone for the new year. In addition to establishing rules and procedures, they are ready to get to know their kids and start building positive relationships. This is a read aloud that helps with laying that foundation, and it serves as a great starting point for get-to-know-you activities and class community building. There is a blank space on the last page for teachers to sign their own name, so that students know that the letter in the book is coming straight from them. With its sincere message and inclusive illustrations, A Letter From Your Teacher is a valuable addition to any elementary school teacher's classroom library. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/storytimewithmstee/message

Some people who are inspired to teach later find other ways of utilizing the skills they learned in teaching to help out others outside just their classroom. So what kind of effect can children's books aimed at classrooms have on a global scale? On this episode of Change Starts Here, host Dustin Odham speaks with teacher-turned-author Shannon Olsen, who has penned multiple children's books for elementary classrooms (and anyone who wants to read them). "I think when I first became a teacher, I always thought about helping to make a positive contribution within my own classroom." says Olsen. “And what I really love now about what I do, since creating things for teachers and students, is I really love knowing that I'm now making a positive contribution beyond just the bubble of one classroom.”The episode covers:What inspired Olsen to create teaching materials for other classroomsHow Olsen was inspired to write her first children's bookHow her books are used by teachers in the classroom, from elementary to high school“I feel like I get to now be in multiple classrooms, and I don't always get to see it or hear about it, but it's just great knowing that things that I've helped create are being used in classrooms all around the world” says Olsen. “It's the coolest feeling.”Shannon Olsen spent fifteen years as a second-grade elementary school teacher before authoring her first children's book, Our Class is a Family. She has since published other books, including A Letter From Your Teacher and Our School is a Family. She also has teaching resources and her own website and LLC with Life Between Summers.

Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
We have a true one-of-a-kind story today. Mel Vogel set out to hike the Trans Canada Trail in June 2017. Even when part of the trail was closed for recreational use during Covid, Mel remained on or near the trail in the Yukon, eventually completing it in November 2022. During her hike, Mel touched the Atlantic, Pacific, and even the Arctic Ocean, finding kindness and friends along the way, as well as her new friend, Malo, a lost dog. Mel and Steve share a personal conversation that touches nerves and reveals a strength of character within Mel. You can learn more about Mel and her remarkable journey at the following links: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-walking-trans-canada-trail/ https://tctrail.ca/news/melanie-vogel/ https://torontolife.com/memoir/three-years-ago-i-left-toronto-to-walk-across-canada-now-im-riding-out-the-pandemic-in-an-arctic-community-of-nine-people/ Our Class of 2023 is starting to hit the trail, one by one. This week, we catch up with three of them. Chuck Faulkinberry has to share some difficult news, Jessica Lang-Wright is having problems keeping warm at night (check the picture below), and Sonny Blackwell is racking up milestones along the way. Our Woods Hole Weekend Video Series is now available for purchase. With over 13 hours of solid content, with tips, tricks, hacks, and advice, our presenters prepared our guests for their own AT thru-hike. You can check out the trailer and various subjects covered at the link below: https://www.hikingradionetwork.com/p/woods-hole-weekend/ For the next week only (closing at midnight on March 15th), there is a discount of $100 for early purchasers. If you've invested your time and money in your thru-hike, you should consider this series as a critical investment, from people who have all completed thru-hikes of the Appalachian Trail. Emet Baker, or Quickbeam is our guest today. He was able to complete his first year college finals before heading out on trail last year, with a mission to accomplish and complete the trail before he needed to return to camp. Emet was suggested to me by a previous guest, who wrote such kind words about him, that I wondered if they were hyperbole. They weren't. He's an impressive young man with, I'm sure, a great future, both in hiking and pretty much whatever he turns his hand to. You'll be impressed by him as well. You can follow Emet on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/quickbeamwalks/ and, a first for the podcast, on Reddit at https://www.reddit.com/user/Grati_Mortui/. Our Class of 23 is adding another new member this week, as well as revisiting an earlier member. Bryan Robbins plans to head out in April after retiring from his career, while Steve Kortekamp has a new partner to share the trail with. Here's Bryan. and here's Steve and Brooke. Doctor Lynne feeds our souls today with a chat about nutrition, though I was mainly interested in the undoubted benefits of Snickers on the trail. Happy Days. Remember, you can get ALL of Doctor Lynne's notes at this Google Drive link. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1CJ5llgK7FUnbKnbtbWlsP6v_4dNentVa?usp=sharing If you'd like to find out more about "Then The Hail Came," check out George's website at https://georgesteffanos.webador.com/. Chris Hedges, who appeared on this program a few months back after the publication of his book Our Class, returns to discuss his powerful new book The Greatest Evil is War, which shows the true face of war and exposes the propagandistic narratives that help to sustain and escalate wars. Hedges, a veteran war correspondent, shows us the people who actually do the fighting and the dying, from those maimed and traumatized for life to those who must collect the corpses from the battlefield. He shows how every war is presented by each side as a battle of the forces of light against the forces of darkness, and why the real story is almost always much more complicated. He shows how the darkest facts of war are kept from public view, and instead the population is presented with an image of war as something heroic and exciting. He shows how war memorials and the media get us to "admire the despicable beauty of weapons systems without seeing what they do to human bodies," and explains how those who benefit from continued conflict contribute to sustaining it. Hedges warns that history shows us that those who think they can keep wars from spiraling out of control are often deluding themselves, and policy-makers who think themselves rational have often led their countries into catastrophic and suicidally destructive conflicts. Hedges' TomDispatch piece about writing on war is here. Tomas Young's letter can be read here. Hedges refers to Johnny Got His Gun and the preface to Edward Said's Orientalism. Nathan's review of The Greatest Evil is War is here. The news story about the Congressional Progressive Caucus' letter is here. Apologies for the delayed release of this episode. CA staff are busy trying to finish up the new print issue, which will be out within days! Also Nathan still isn't quite over COVID.

A couple of years ago, a unique off Broadway production played to sold out audiences night after night. The authors? Inmates at a maximum security prison in New Jersey. Chris Hedges, a Presbyterian minister and Pulitzer Prize winning former correspondent for the New York Times, has a new book (Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison), detailing the story of how the men he taught drama to behind bars became playwrights telling deeply personal stories. What can we learn about the US prison system, American society, and how not to judge people by their labels? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the second of a two-part interview, journalist Hugh Hamilton discusses with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Chris Hedges the role of race and poverty in mass incarceration, as chronicled in Hedges' new book, ‘Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison.' The pipeline that fuels our system of mass incarceration runs through the intersection of race and poverty in all too many of our neglected and marginalized urban centers. In his new book, ‘Our Class' author Chris Hedges describes the impact of this debilitating poverty that pervades many of our cities and towns. He writes: “The social hell of urban America is the great destroyer of dreams. It batters and assaults the children of the poor. It teaches them that their dreams, and finally they themselves, are worthless. They go to bed hungry. They live with fear. They lose their fathers, brothers, and sisters to mass incarceration – and, at times, their mothers. “This social hell is relentless. It wears them down. It makes them angry and bitter. It drives them to hopelessness and despair. The message sent to them by the dysfunctional schools, the decrepit housing projects, the mercenary financial institutions, gang violence, instability, and ever-present police abuse, is that they are human refuse.”

Program Summary: Author Chris Hedges also teaches college-level courses for New Jersey state prison inmates. His new book, “Our Class,” explains what happened when Hedges taught a dramatic-literature course to inmates, then helped them write a play of their own – “Caged” – based on their personal life events. As well, the inmates' stories illustrate the many cruelties of life in an American prison. Chris Hedges spoke at a KPFA / Project Censored Zoom event on November 18; this week's program presents excerpts from that talk. Notes: Chris Hedges is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist with a long career as a war correspondent around the world. He hosts the program "On Contact" for RT Television, and writes online at www.scheerpost.com. His previous books include "War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning," "Death of the Liberal Class," and "America: The Farewell Tour."

In this episode of Grid Talk host Marty Rosenberg talks with Leo Denault who is the Chairman and CEO of Entergy Corporation. Entergy delivers electricity to three million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The podcast focuses on the electric grid devastation caused by Hurricane Ida and re-evaluating grid assets used to power customers. The utility and policymakers must consider whether it is time to pick up the pace of transmission and distribution line upgrades, according to Denault. When Hurricane Ida struck Louisiana two months ago its 150 mph winds caused prolonged electric power failures. “The new infrastructure is proving to be robust against even the storms that we're seeing today,” Denault said, “but what we do need to determine is whether or not the cost-benefit relationship has changed.” “Maybe that cost-benefit relationship has changed, and we need to come to some agreement with our stakeholders about if that's changed, how aggressive should we be in changing out millions of poles.”He continued: “What we plan to do is look at the potential options for added resilience to the system, the cost of those different options, and then come to an agreement on the cost-benefit discussion about should we look at poles that, to traditional standards, would be considered perfectly fine and take them down and put-up new ones?” Transformation has already been underway. “We've spent nearly $10 billion over the last five years on new transmission and distribution infrastructure. Our Class 1 poles on the distribution side, they can withstand 150 mile-an-hour winds, and our new transmission structures are designed to withstand 150 mile-an-hour winds. In both Hurricane Laura and in Hurricane Ida those new technologies and those new structures withstand those storms quite well.”Leo Denault joined Entergy in 1999 as vice president of corporate development, he was named Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer five years later. He was named CEO and Chairman in 2013.Prior to joining Entergy, Mr. Denault served as vice president of corporate development at Cinergy Corporation, where he helped acquire generation, distribution, and trading businesses. He has an MBA from Indiana University and a bachelor's degree in economics and accounting from Ball State University.

Our Class of 2021 Seniors have officially graduated and we want to pay a little tribute to them and brag on all the hard work they have put into this year. Also, Miranda was this year's commencement speaker and shares her speech with everyone!
Teachers do so much more than just teach academics. They build a sense of community within their classrooms, creating a home away from home where they make their students feel safe, included, and loved. With its heartfelt message and colorfully whimsical illustrations, “Our Class is a Family” is a book that will help build and strengthen that class community. Kids learn that their classroom is a place where it’s safe to be themselves, it’s okay to make mistakes, and it’s important to be a friend to others. When hearing this story being read aloud by their teacher, students are sure to feel like they are part of a special family. And currently, during such an unprecedented time when many teachers and students are not physically in the classroom due to COVID-19 school closures, it’s more important than it’s ever been to give kids the message that their class is a family. Even at a distance, they still stick together.Book By: Shannon OlsenRead By: Erin Yeschin
Today's focus is all about read alouds, in particular bringing diversity to your classroom libraries! I share of my some favorite books and some that I am adding into the mix! Our Class of 99 series comes to an epic conclusion this week with a look at the oft-maligned horror/comedy IDLE HANDS! We're joined in studio by longtime friend of the podcast and first time guest, Craig Carson! We'll discuss the film's development, and well, just what went wrong to cause it to be so ill-received. Over the last twenty years, it's gained a cult following, but does it deserve it? We discuss exactly that as Craig throws us a curveball and nominates it not for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame, but for a Movie Redemption! It's been a long, long time since we've done a Movie Redemption but longtime listeners will know that these are films that have pretty poor reputations, but that we (or at least one of us) disagrees. We may not think these films are classics, but that they might just deserve to be reconsidered as better than their legacy would lead you to believe. So let us know! Is IDLE HANDS worthy of redemption? VOTE: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2MLDFZ2 We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode! Our Class of 99 series continue this week with a special double feature! We're joined this week by a special first time guest, Jennifer Horne (yep, the wife of our very own co-host Gary Horne)! Jennifer wanted to come on the show to discuss a film from 1999 and she made a very bold choice in her pick: the William Malone-directed remake of HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. While thinking about discussing this film, we also realized that William Castle's original film from 1959 was celebrating its 60th anniversary this year so we thought, "Ya know what? Let's just make this a HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL double feature!" So in this episode, we'll discuss William Castle, his film and his legacy and how that legacy lead to a series of remakes from his films in the late 90s/early 2000s, starting with HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. How did it all happen? Listen to find out, and to hear our takes on both films, including how they compare and relate to one another. And hey, one version got nominated for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame! You'll have to click the link below to find out which (or just listen to the episode). Our Class of '89 series comes to a triumphant conclusion this week with a film that, well quite frankly got lost in the shuffle among the other films released during one of the biggest blockbuster summers of all time. Starring "Weird Al" Yankovic in his sole feature film lead role, UHF — a strange little comedy that utilized its star's penchant for parody and general silliness — didn't stand much of a chance at the box office against such giants as BATMAN and INDIANA JONES & THE LAST CRUSADE, and was panned by critics, ignored by audiences and quickly forgotten. However, Yankovic's legions of fans brought the film back from the dead, and it's gained quite a cult following. In this episode, we'll discuss just what went wrong initially, and how it managed to cultivate a following, even three decades after its original release and failure. And since it does in fact appear in Michael J. Weldon's Psychotronic Video Guide, we're nominating it for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame, and we need your help to decide whether or not it goes in!
