Cory Rosenke is an author, theologian, pastor, teacher, and coach who spent most of his childhood in the debilitating grip of poverty, isolation, and even homelessness. He found his reprieve by exploring the majestic but lonely mountain slopes of the Rocky Mountains, along with a walking stick, a book, and his faithful and beloved dog. Cory's consistently curious mind was always asking the question “why,” especially in regard to human nature, and many of the books which captivated his attention were not the typical choices for young readers. At the ages of eleven and twelve, Cory was eagerly exploring Laws and Republic by Plato, Ethics by Aristotle, and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. He especially loved “Where I Lived, and What I Lived for,” by Henry David Thoreau, because Cory felt that it seemed to meet him where he was at. His early teen years found him exploring a new province (Alberta) and embarking on new literary adventures, including the diverse works of Sigmund Freud, Edmund Burke, Plutarch, and C. S. Lewis, just to name a few. Cory's recently published book is titled “The Magnetic Heart of God: Understanding the Five Cravings of Your Soul.” Today, Cory remains as inquisitive as ever, spending his days as he always has, reading, writing, exploring, shepherding, and forever watching and wondering. Cory shares much of his learned wisdom and insights and addresses many important questions regarding the heart and soul of humanity and human nature, including the proof that mankind has souls, how we can discover meaning and purpose in our lives, why people do what they do, why the world is falling apart, and what it means to be made in the image of God, and how we can reconnect with our soul. Download this beautiful and uplifting episode which answers so many unanswered questions and gently unlocks the mystery of heart, soul, and human nature. You do NOT want to miss this! Is your soul satisfied? Author, pastor, and pursuer of truth Cory Rosenke says our souls are craving. Although an avid lover of philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, he knows these mechanisms can never fulfill the appetite of the soul, and often we fail to recognize the hunger in our soul because our attitudes toward its existence are passive and mute instead of bold and lively, as God intended. He says must go beyond the biology of who we are to embrace what God wants to give us, communion with Him. Tune in to learn more.

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Cory Rosenke. As an author, pastor, presenter, and tenacious pursuer of truth, Cory Rosenke is both the concept pioneer and the foremost authority on the cravings of the soul. Through session, song, workshop and manuscript, he is dedicated to the pivotal work of connecting hungry souls to the joy of their Maker. In a world where truth and reality have become shrouded in deceptive ambiguity, Cory Rosenke specializes in reasserting the clarity of Divine definition and design. To give a better understanding of Cory, I'd like to share an interview that he did with Raymond Reed that I'd like to share here as well… From a tattered canvas tent staked on the grass beside a remote lake in British Columbia, Canada, to a log cabin perched high above the clouds in the majestic Rocky Mountains, Cory Rosenke spent much of his childhood in the debilitating grip of poverty, isolation, and even homelessness. “I found my reprieve in exploration,” Cory explained during an interview in January 2023. “As a kid, I would wander the lonely mountain slopes with a walking stick, a book, and my faithful dog. When I found a vantage point that suited my tastes, I would lean against a tree, open my book, and experience the magic of being whisked away into faraway lands and varied perspectives.” Many of the books that captivated his curious mind were not your typical young readers. At the ages of eleven and twelve, Cory was eagerly exploring Laws and Republic by Plato, Ethics by Aristotle, and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. “I especially loved, Where I Lived, and What I Lived for, by Henry David Thoreau,” says Cory, “as it seemed to meet me where I was at.” His early teen years found him exploring a new province (Alberta) and embarking on new literary adventures: the diverse works of Sigmund Freud, Edmund Burke, Plutarch, and C. S. Lewis, just to name a few. “I'm not exactly sure what sparked it all,” Cory said in response to my inquiry, “but from a very early age I wanted to understand why people did the things they did. I especially longed to understand myself. For as long as I can remember, I've yearned to identify the deeper why lurking beneath the surface why. Eventually, I found Jesus, and the puzzle pieces finally began to fit together.” Cory Rosenke's insatiable curiosity has remained a constant force throughout the ups and downs of living. From a cowboy to a carpenter, a business owner to a small-town pastor; a seminary graduate to a dynamic multi-national teacher, Cory Rosenke's varied and eclectic life has graced him with a unique and insightful perspective—an innovative voice that pierces the fog of false religion and philosophic dogma. Now an accomplished author, theologian, and pastor, Cory remains as inquisitive as ever. He currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area of California (as of 2023), and he spends his days as he always has—reading, writing, exploring, shepherding, and forever watching and wondering. In closing, I'd like to share a short excerpt from Cory's book, “The Magnetic Heart of God.” “It would be a mistake to believe that your soul is mute or passive, that it is merely a fragile passenger, tethered to the flesh and along for the ride. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Frankly, the opposite is our reality. Our souls are bold, insistent, and alive with desire.” To find out more about Cory, check out his website at https://coryrosenke.com/.

Deep down, we all (even non-Christians) know that there has to be some part of us beyond our brains and bodies. Those deepest parts have yearnings that call us to search for something that is not material. Those yearnings call us to search for God. Though, we do get confused sometimes. Join me in this episode as Cory Rosenke shares how his yearnings (and and irrepressible urge to ask "Why?") lead him to his faith and to God. We talk about how the deepest issues of identity, purpose, mission, and meaning lead us to God in a powerful way. Without their proper alignment, we are easily lost. We all want the kind of peace that transcends life's ups and downs. To do this, we must listen to the five cravings of our soul: 1. Security 2. Identity 3. Independence 4. Significance and 5. at Innocence. In this episode, Matt interviews Cory Rosenke about these five fundamental cravings. Discover how each craving influences the way we behave. Take a look within and join this soul-searching conversation that will leave your mind and mood feeling fully nourished. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: These are non-biological soul cravings, not just psychological needs. God can fully satisfy these cravings in a way the physical world cannot. Following God's guidance brings security, significance, and fulfillment beyond what money/status can provide. [02:08] The Craving for Security Our need to feel safe goes beyond just having locks and walls. It goes deeper than just a desire for physical protection. Cory describes it as having two parts - physical security vs. relational security (knowing that our hearts are safe with the people we're close to). Connecting with our creator is the way to experience a deep and lasting sense of security. [13:40] Craving for Identity Identity encompasses the questions "Who am I?", "Why am I?", "What is my purpose?", and "Do I have value?" This craving is strongly rooted in psychology but is actually non-biological in nature. People often try to find identity through worldly means like gangs or political affiliations. However, allowing external things to become our sole identity can be problematic since it will fiercely defend that identity even when it's not serving us. True identity must go deeper than surface-level affiliations and circumstances. [17:38] Craving for Independence This includes both a craving for freedom as well as a desire for distinct individuality. While independence is an important craving, it is never fully satisfied through worldly or biological means alone. [20:54] Craving for Significance This craving seeks not just to feel different through independence, but to feel above or special. When managed properly, this craving can create great works of art and beauty. But when pursued in unhealthy ways, it can lead to conflict and a desire to feel significant by pushing others down. [29:36] Craving for Innocence Innocence is underlying every argument or conflict, as each person wants to feel innocent of wrongdoing. This craving is meant to inspire right living, but is often misused to claim righteousness over others through "cancel culture". Innocence is best managed through connection to God, who declares our innocence through love rather than condemnation. Notable quotes: [09:55] I know God loves me, cares for me, and is working for my best. [10:00] [11:12] If you want to satisfy a non-biological craving, you're gonna have to look towards the non-biological. The Magnetic Heart of God Cory Rosenke pt 2 Have you ever considered why “people do the things they do?” Including yourself? Have you ever pondered WHY you react certain ways in certain situations? Have you ever asked the question “WHY” and truly, honestly, wanted to seek the answer? Our guest today spent much of his childhood asking – and seeking – the answer to questions such as these. Ultimately, he discovered something that many people, Christians included, may miss as they run the rat race of life. Cory Rosenke spent much of his childhood in the grip of poverty, isolation and homelessness. He would spend time wandering lonely mountain slopes with his dog, a walking stick and a book. His passion for reading, not just any book, but books written by Plato, Aristotle and icons like that, sparked his imagination but drove him to read more. He studied works by Freud, Plutarch and C.S. Lewis, just to name a few. But then, he discovered the ultimate works, that introduced him to Jesus. Amen! Over the course of time, Cory discovered, what he calls, “The Five Cravings of the Soul,” that have applied to all of humanity through life and time. He says, “God created these cravings within us – for the purpose of drawing us towards a connection with Him.” Amen! Cory Rosenke is now an accomplished author, theologian, pastor and speaker. He is the author of a book that discusses these things, titled, “The Magnetic Heart of God: Understanding the Five Cravings of Your Soul.” This is part two (and the conclusion) of a great, two part interview! I think, before we get into your book, let's lay a foundation first. Can you tell us HOW you discovered the proof that we, as individuals, actually have a soul? In the beginning section of your book, you pose a unique question. So I want to bring this out first and get your opinion as we start. You share, “We live in a time of unprecedented prosperity. But yet, the collective emptiness is also unprecedented. How is this possible?” Could you share with us your perspective on this? In the video I watched, “The Bad News of the Gospel,” explain for us the meaning of “The Gospel explains the Storm before the Calm,” which you shared? I thought that was really good. You share that we seek fulfillment through “wealth, power and fame.” But what we discover, is that the inner sense of peace is missing when we think we achieve these things. Why is that? Let's get into the meat of the situation. You've identified the “5 Cravings of the Soul” as, “Security; Identity; Independence; Significance; Innocence.” You also relate these five cravings as being demonstrated in the Garden of Eden. I believe that gives us a clear understanding of the point you are trying to make. Could you elaborate on this for us so the audience will see what you are talking about in your book? Let's cover the first: Security. We all want security – to feel safe, in our life. Share a little about this need for our soul to experience a sense of security… What about...

Cory, it so good to have you with us today! I do appreciate your time! The first question I always start with is this. Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Cory Rosenke?” We are a three part being… body, soul and spirit. What role does the soul play in the interactions between those three parts? I think, before we get into your book, let's lay a foundation first. It didn't start out that way, but poverty, abuse, and insecurity became the norm in Cory's childhood. For a long time he found solace in books by deep thinkers like Nietzsche, Homer, and C.S. Lewis. At 14 years old he left home with a job and an inner vow, but things went differently than he planned. He married young, and had children when things began to unravel. But through the power of love, and dealing with the true issues, Cory "grew up" instead of "blew up".
