Courtney Banghart's North Carolina team has flown somewhat under the radar this season but after a northern California sweep last week, the Heels stand at 20-4 overall, 8-3 in the ACC and ranked 13th in the country. A big part of the rise has been the play of sophomore point guard Reniya Kelly and her ability to run the talented team with precision. Kelly joins Inside Carolina's Jeremiah Holloway and Tommy Ashley to talk not only ball, but how she came to be such an important piece of this season's success.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. The Tar Heels, led by thirty-third year head coach Sylvia Hatchell, play their games at Carmichael Arena and are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They finished the season 18–15, 9–9 in ACC play to finish in eighth place. They defeat Georgia Tech in the first round before losing in the second round of the ACC women's tournament to Notre Dame. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA women's tournament, which was their first trip since 2015. We've been in waiting mode for awhile now with Elliot Cadeau, class of 2024 PG commit to UNC. Why so? The possibility of Cadeau reclassifying to join Carolina in 2023 has been much discussed. Cadeau just finished the last session of the regular season of the Nike EYBL circuit, with Peach Jam still a month away. The month gap in between would be a natural spot for him to re-classify (if he's going to) and join Simeon Wilcher and Zayden High in this year's class. North Carolina, on Monday, received a commitment from Blanca Thomas, a 6'5 post ranked No. 10 in the class of 2024. More great news for Courtney Banghart. The Tar Heel baseball team now knows its destination for the 2023 NCAA Tournament – Terra Haute, IN. Just as we all expected. Who will the Tar Heels play and what's the schedule? Will Vance Honeycutt be able to play? The Men's golf team is in the final eight teams in contention for the team National Championship. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Chris Leazier refers to himself as a basketball nomad. He grew up glued to Indiana University games back when Bobby Knight was patrolling the sidelines and winning more championships than he threw chairs. Though a good player, Chris decided in high school that he'd have a greater impact with a whistle around his neck. One of his first stops was Thetford Academy, where he coached Basketball Strong co-host Tim DiFrancesco (TD). After spending seven years as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College, Chris was at the helm of Saint Anselm College's women's basketball for two years. Then Bakersfield Jam head coach Will Voigt came calling and Chris entered the D-League, soon reuniting with TD as well. After several other college and high school coaching jobs, Will called Chris again and they teamed up to lead the Nigerian men's national team at the Rio Olympics. Soon after, Chris was back coaching high school basketball, and also served as the head of scouting and video for University of North Carolina women's coach Courtney Banghart, who had been his fellow assistant coach at Dartmouth. In the past few years, Chris has applied all his coaching expertise at Hudl, where he currently serves as market lead for elite basketball & D1 colleges. In this episode, Chris riffs on:How he developed more compassion as a coach, while still maintaining a standard of excellenceWhy it's important to enjoy and learn from every experience What coaching and life lesson transferred from coaching in the Olympics, college, and high school basketballWhich coach was the best servant leader he has ever seenWhat makes Courtney Banghart such a successful coachKeep up with Chris on his Twitter feed.

North Carolina looks to get back to their winning ways as they travel to Louisville this weekend to take on the woeful Cardinals, who have two wins to their name. Questions marks surround the availability of UNC's front court – Will Armando Bacot and/or Pete Nance be able to play? If not, Hubert Davis will rely heavily on his back court to carry the load – RJ Davis, Caleb Love, and Seth Trimble. He'll also need the veteran leadership of Leaky Black and Puff Johnson's intangibles, not to mention another strong performance from freshman Jalen Washington. The women's team picked up a win at Virginia on Thursday night with 21 points each from Kennedy Todd-Williams (career high) and Deja Kelly. Freshman Paulina Paris didn't score as much (seven points) but did have five assists and zero turnovers. Courtney Banghart's club used a closing 22-2 run to pull off the 11 point win. Host Isaac Schade also takes you around Tar Heel athletics action happening this weekend and the Heels of the Week.
