It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Just going with the big news for October 31 as the National Wrestling Hall of Fame has, quite literally, the honors. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame recently announced its Class of 2024, and it's an illustrious group that has made significant contributions to the sport of wrestling. The class includes Distinguished Members Tadaaki Hatta, Toccara Montgomery, Coleman Scott, and Logan Stieber. These four individuals have had a profound impact on the sport. J.R. Johnson, Darryl Miller, Jonathan Koch and Colonel Steve Banach will also be honored by The Hall.-Tadaaki Hatta, originally from Tokyo, Japan, moved to the United States in 1961 and became an NCAA champion and two-time national champion for Oklahoma State University. Hatta has a storied career in coaching, having been part of the U.S. men's freestyle coaching staff for the Olympics in 1988, 1992, and 1996. He also coached the Japanese Olympic team in 1968 and 1984 and the Mexican Olympic team in 1972. Hatta has been an art teacher, wrestling coach, and trainer at high schools in Ohio for 40 years. His contributions to the sport are immense, and he has been a guiding force in the development of wrestling at both the national and international levels.-Toccara Montgomery is another name that stands out. She is considered one of the most dominant female wrestlers in United States history. Montgomery made history in 2004 as the first Black woman to wrestle for the U.S. in the Olympics. She was a four-time United States Open champion and the Pan Am champion in 2002 and 2003. Montgomery was a two-time national champion for the University of the Cumberlands and has been inducted into multiple halls of fame. She currently serves as an assistant principal and continues to contribute to the sport as a coach.-Coleman Scott won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and was a four-time All-American, finishing his college career as an NCAA champion for Oklahoma State. He was a member of the U.S. National Freestyle Team multiple times and has contributed as a coach at both Oklahoma State and the University of North Carolina. Scott's achievements on the mat are paralleled by his contributions as a coach, nurturing the next generation of wrestling talent.-Logan Stieber is another name that resonates in the wrestling community. He became the first Big Ten Conference wrestler and the fourth wrestler overall to be a four-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion. Stieber led Ohio State to its first wrestling national championship in 2015 and has a World Championship in men's freestyle to his name. He has been an assistant coach for Ohio State since 2021.J.R. Johnson, the Meritorious Official honoree, has officiated at every level in the United States and has been a mentor to younger officials. His dedication to the sport extends beyond the mat, as he also assists with weigh-ins, pairings, and scheduling at tournaments at every level. Johnson's extensive experience, with over 20 NCAA championships, and commitment, make him one of the most respected officials in the wrestling community. He's also a Virginia native, so 2 Up, 2 down. Darryl Miller, the Order of Merit recipient, has been a medical volunteer for USA Wrestling since 1993 and has served at multiple World Championships and Olympic Games. His expertise extends to educational presentations on emergency procedures, skin lesions, and CPR and First Aid for coaches at USA Wrestling clinics. Miller's contributions have been instrumental in ensuring the safety and well-being of athletes at both national and international events.Jonathan Koch, the Medal of Courage recipient, is a living testament to the resilience and fighting spirit that wrestling instills in its athletes. After surviving septic shock and losing parts of all four limbs, he underwent a revolutionary human hand transplant and defied all odds to not only survive but thrive. Koch's journey serves as an inspiring example of the indomitable human spirit, proving that with resilience and determination, one can overcome even the most daunting challenges.Retired United States Army Infantry Colonel Steve Banach, the Outstanding American honoree, served with distinction in the United States Army from 1983 to 2010. His leadership skills, honed on the wrestling mat, were evident in his military service, including deployments to six combat zones and a distinguished career in special operations. Banach's wrestling background has clearly influenced his leadership style, making him a standout figure in both the military and the wrestling communities.-The full rundown of the day's wrestling news can be delivered to your inbox daily, courtesy of Mat Talk Online's Daily Wrestling Newsletter, delivered by Resilite. Got a two-star review on this here show the other day. The review, which was on the master Mat Talk feed and not this or the master Short Time feed, said they missed the longer shows and these short ones weren’t cutting it. First off, thank you for the feedback. Everyone has different tastes and this format has mostly been agreeable to listeners. This show, Short Time, actually started in this format in November of 2013. It went to interviews when the scores stopped, and the show grew from there. The interview shows aren’t done, but I’ve been busy handling the clients I have with the network. I’m also not going to chase the same interviews as everyone else. Doing things differently is what I’ve always done, but that being said, yes, I miss “my show” with “my interviews.” I’ll be picking them back up here soon, but I’ve always got a lot of irons in the fire. When my time becomes strained, I put my own shows on the back burner. I don’t put Short Time ahead of any other show on the network. These shots keep me fresh, help promote every level of wrestling and keep episodes in the feed. I don’t just want to stop doing shows and then lose the listeners. There’s over 70 wrestling podcasts out there. This was the second one. I know people have come and gone from the various Mat Talk shows. I like this format. I like the interview format, but this is also my business, I have to make sure my time is cost-effective. This is why I pitch the Patreon links at the end of each show. Maybe I can take the time away to develop the show ideas in the off-season, but as my wife says, wrestling has no off-season. I put out 448 episodes in 2019, always putting my clients and affiliate shows ahead of my own. Thanks for the feedback, constructive and positive. It’s all taken into consideration. That long winded intro is by your host, me, Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look back at the scores and more in the world of wrestling.  Also, the Attack Style Wrestling Podcast will be coming back with NCAA champion Daryl Weber. We’ll record the first episode in over a year next week.  In Duals: We lead with the first victory in over 60 years for Presbyterian College. The Blue Hose hosted NAIA Truett McConnell on Wednesday and shut out the Bears 44-0. It was a forfeit-laden meet. This is the first year of Division I wrestling for Presbyterian, which did have a team back in the early 1950s. It’s the smallest school in Division I and started both men’s and women’s wrestling this year.  Closest match of the night came in Division II where Indianapolis edged Findlay 19-18 on criteria E - Total number of takedowns scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls. Also in Division II, Belmont Abbey topped Queens 36-12. Fairmont State beat Kent State-Tuscarawas, a varsity NCWA team, 35-0. It’s the first win since the program was added back at Fairmont State, but we’re not exactly sure if the Kent State branch campus is actually a countable opponent under NCAA rules. Fairmont State’s last win came at some point in the 1982-83 season. Fort Hays State beat Central Missouri 28-12. Second closest match of the night was in Division III where Pitt-Bradford topped Penn State Behrend 28-27. This one came down to the second criteria, most six-point victories, which favored Pitt-Bradford. Too many forfeits here though. In Division III, Castleton beat Rhode Island College 31-6, Springfield topped Norwich 37-9. North Central topped Chicago 22-15, Otterbein beat Case Western 38-15. Case Western Reserve did get one win on senior night as Connor Forrest got a fall in the first period to push the Spartans past Ohio Wesleyan 27-26. NAIA Cumberland University doubled up Division II Kentucky Wesleyan 30-15. In another forfeit-filled dual, NAIA Warner Pacific beat Division III Pacific 29-9. Just four matches were actually contested.  Rochester (Minn.) blanked Northland, Itasca, Minnesota West and Ridgewater by a combined 227-0 to win their eighth straight Minnesota College Athletic Conference championship in a row. Also in the NJCAA, Cloud County beat Barton 30-21.  On the women’s side, Life picked up a pair of wins, beating Brewton-Parker 49-1 and Limestone 37-9. Limestone also beat Brewton-Parker 38-6.  Notables on the Docket: In Division I, three of the four teams in action are from PSAC, or the MAC East. Lock Haven heads to Appalachian State, while Edinboro faces Bloomsburg.   In Division II, Emmanuel takes on Limestone, Nebraska-Kearney heads to Warrensburg to take on Central Missouri. Out in the Rockies, Western Colorado faces Adams State while New Mexico Highlands, which is in Las Vegas (New Mexico), faces Chadron State.  Decent night of action coming up in Division III as some, but not all, of the matches of note see UW-La Crosse head to UW-Whitewater, Wartburg heads to Luther, Olivet is at Trine, Washington & Jefferson is at Thiel, Alma is at Adrian, Loras takes on Central and of course, I can’t resist the epic battle between the Student Princes of Heidelberg and the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern. In mixed division action, Fontbonne is at Lincoln and Central Methodist is at Westminster.  FROM THE DWN: The Pioneer Press talks with Minnesota heavyweight Gable Steveson about his time away from the mat during his suspension during an investigation into allegations of sexual assault. No charges were filed and Steveson is the top-ranked heavyweight in the country.  Pretty cool story out of West Virginia, well, kinda. Davis & Elkins head coach Jerry Boland spent a ton of time teaching and coaching in New Jersey. He’s got four wrestlers from Burlington County on the first-year team. Five Point Move profiles Alex Sancho prior to Thor Masters.  A day late, but still relevant. The Daily Collegian, the student paper at Penn State, talks about Cael Sanderson and the Penn State take on the transfer portal.  Due to an issue with Mailchimp on Wednesday morning, the Daily Wrestling News didn’t go out. So you may have already heard about the story from NBC Sports that notes Kyle Snyder is living in Cael Sanderson’s basement. For real.  Cody Goodwin from The Des Moines Register is back with his weekly mailbag. No worries Cody, the NWMA awards have been paid for. You won’t have to lie to your parents anymore.  Also from the Daily Collegian was the announcement that super senior Anthony Cassar’s college career is over.  IAWrestle reported the former Penn State wrestler Brody Teske was transferring to Northern Iowa, while Austin Gomez of Iowa State is seeking a medical redshirt.  There was also a pretty cool feature yesterday from Seth Duckworth at the Pistols Firing Blog about Adnan Alkaissy, also known as General Adnan from his pro wrestling days. Alkaissy is from Iraq, was an All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State, and knew Saddam Hussein. Crazy stuff.  On The Network I made an appearance on Purdue’s Always Aggressive podcast, and while that isn’t on the network, whenever I do a guest spot on another show, it’ll show up in the feed.  Cliff Fretwell from Compound released an episode of ThaHustle with North Carolina head coach Coleman Scott. That’s worth checking out.  I’ve also got a new episode of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast with Associate Head Coach Daryl Thomas. 1999 – First Year Was working at a KFC in the Grafton section of Yorktown, Va. Got a call from Mike Newbern. “Twink, Gary Alcon (ref) can't make it, do you want to go to Fargo?” That right there changed it all. Everything. Stayed in Reed Johnson Hall. Virginian Christian Smith made the Cadet Freestyle finals at 83.5 pounds. He ended up being a 3x state champion and NCAA qualifier for Duke and Liberty (He took down Nickerson in 2007 to open up the tournament). There was no Buffalo Wild Wings. There was a Bison Turf, there was a mug and I may or may not have been from Alabama. Or named Kevin. Shared a dial-up line with Sara Koenig from NCMat.com (you know her now as one of the tournament directors for the Super 32. Rob Sherrill vouched for me for a media credential. Thankfully, I'd met him in Virginia at the Virginia Duals when I was in high school. Don't remember much about the competition since I was still pretty new to the national scene. We had the Dream Team Classic in VA that year, so I paid attention to guys like Foley Dowd, Jason Powell, Clark Forward — and two of those Team USA guys met in the finals, Damion Hahn beat Jason Potter. 2000 – Year 2 Buffalo Wild Wings Opened. Taco Bell re-opened, it was closed the year before for renovations. Harry Lester vs. Mark Jayne, Junior Greco. Jayne was returning JR. Champ, Lester won cadets the year before. 3-5-3 (BOOM). 132 pounds. Virginia had two cadet champs – Christian Staylor and Albert Childress (almost bookends) Kid named Tyler Safratowich of Minnesota won at 83.5 pounds, did a backflip, then he started eating. Mary Kelly going 2-2 in Cadet Freestyle and Micah Amrozowicz, now the head coach at the Newport News Apprentice School, having to come from behind to beat her 8-7. 2001 – Year 3 Started doing freelance work for TheMat.com and wrote features on the Dibbern triplets, Mary Kelly wrestling against the boys in the Juniors. Cerebral Palsy kid J.C. McMaster – his e-mail address was pimp_limpin@ something another dot com. Jeff Courtney, a deaf All-American from West Virginia ? and TRAVIS EFFING LEE. Lee “leis' greco gold. Beat Nick Simmons. Stopping Simmons from becoming just the second guy to win 4 JR FS titles. As of right now, it’s only Alan Fried. 2002 – Year 4 – Drove from ODU. FIRST YEAR OF FEDERATION WEIGHTS. WENT FROM 96 AAS TO 120 IN JUNIORS 104-136 Started bringing my radio equipment and doing the webcast for USAW with Rob and the late Jon Ponwani. Cleveland – NO Chicago – Driving down Addison, game over Milwaukee – Karaoke at a Friday's in Brookfield, WIS Minneapolis – Twins vs. Angels, Milton vs. Washburn, preview of ALCS First year of Junior Women — Malinda Ripley beat Mary Kelly in the finals. Who the hell is Malinda Ripley? Natasha Umemoto was 3rd. She got the first pin of the tournament ever. Poeta beat Metcalf in Cadet FS. Only finals loss in Metcalf's Fargo career. Stepovers, if I recall correctly for exposure. Decent year from VA, Anthony Burke from my club was 5th in a bracket with Coleman Scott, Mike Rowe, Garrett Scott, Mike Rodrigues, Jake Kreigbaum and Eric Albright. I think I had a team PA jacket on when I gave Burke a high five after beating Albright for 5th. Patrick Bond won Cadet FS. Todd Meneely was the OW, beating Teyon Ware. Some guy with an Afro won Junior FS at 171. Herbert was 3rd. Afro guy recently lost a fight. VANS WARPED TOUR WAS OUTSIDE. 2003 – Year 5 – Drove from ODU on short notice Got up, went to Jiffy Lube and boom. Drove to Milwaukee – was using an old atlas, so I didn't know about the cut through via Rockford and kept adding 90 more minutes to my ride. Went to the same Fridays to sing karaoke again. Sat on top of my truck after a session and listened to a Willie Nelson concert at Newman Outdoor Stadium. Years later, Doc Jim Porter would crap all over my Nelson story and say he went and ended up hanging out with him. All-Southern Cadet final as Nick Marable of Tennessee beat Ben Fiacco of Georgia at 145 Cormier vs. Morrison wrestle-off. I slept through the first one. Not a great moment, but indicative of my 20s. 2004 – Year 6 Rode the bus with team Virginia, wrote a blog as we went all week for the old Mat Talk. Won the Connect 4 championship on the bus, beat Josh Wine 51 consecutive times in Connect 4. Finished up my last college class two weeks after getting home. Finishing up 7 years in college. Henry Cejudo beat Spenser Mango in the Greco finals, was up 9-0 or something and thought he'd gotten the tech, then Mango bombed him for 3 (should have been 5) before Cejudo finished it 13-3. 2005- Year 7 – Hired at InterMat. Pretty sure I flew. Stayed at either the Econo Lodge or the Best Western near Bucks. I still hear the bullhorn go off whenever I hear Mony Mony. Florida had a monster year, although I got into an “argument” with Rob Sherrill about who Franklin Gomez counted for — Florida or Puerto Rico. I say PR, because that's who he was representing. Robby Smith beat Cody Gardner in Freestyle, which stunned us from VA. Justin Wren won in Greco, but when Luke Ashmore won, they all climbed over the railing to celebrate, then trying to go back, Wren got into an argument with a security guard and got thrown out. Couple of Wyoming kids met in the Greco finals, but one had moved to Ohio. Tyler Cox pinned David Taylor in Cadet Greco. Taylor beat BJ Futrell to win cadet FS at 91 ? pounds. 2006 – Year 8 First year of the garbage rules. Hit a rainstorm coming through O'Hare and spent the night there. Connor McDonald took my spot on the last plane to Fargo from O'Hare. Then he wins the tournament. The little shit. ODU had two signees in the Fargo finals — James Nicholson at 119 and Adam Koballa at 130. Eric Grajales bombed Donte Butler and during my interview, Butler cut through it talking some trash. Grajales goes “I just fived you!” in response. Butler has the unique distinction of being the ONLY five-time finalist to never win a title. Eli and Michaela Hutchison become first brother-sister combo to win Junior titles in the same year. 2007 – Year 9 Oregon's Norman Richmond with the breakout performance splitting finals with Jason Chamberlain Helen Maroulis wins a chicken, Nicole Woody goes nuts and ruins my interview. Hayden Zillmer and Jade Rauser at the same weight — 84 pounds — Zillmer doubled at 84 pounds. Alton brothers, Josh Kindig from PA. Nasty. 2008 – Year 10 – Last year at InterMat Drove straight through from PA to Minnesota. Stopped in St. Cloud for about 2 hours, missed the first session. 2009 – Year 11 – Wrestling 411/USAW “That just happened” – This was the finals where Mark Grey was about to start giving an interview, then he was brought back to the mat to re-wrestle the last few seconds of a second period, only to have Ben Whitford score, force a third and then win the title with a third-period win. Man, those rules sucked. 2010 – Year 12 – USA Wrestling F-Rod's Triple Crown Ringer over Ness Grant LaMont makes Greco finals at Juniors as a first-year Cadet. He doesn’t wrestle on Sundays and Cadet Greco kicked off on a Sunday. Well, let’s move up. 2011 – Year 13 – USA Wrestling Parker VonEgidy makes finals with TWO losses. Ended up with 3. Situation – Abounader, VonEgidy, O'Donnell- won by Ricky Robertson. I think I’ve rehashed this on every single show I’ve had Dom Abounader on. Pat Downey with limited FS experience wins over Jordan Rogers at 171. This looks a lot better now than it did then. 2012 – Year 14 – USA Wrestling Zain vs. Zane at 132. Retherford would win cadet WC that year. Cox/Snyder – J'Den wins Freestyle, Kyle wins Greco. Brett Haas wrestles them both. Willie crashed on my couch and squatted all week during his TOM era. 2013 – Year 15 – AWN/TOM Did the interviews on short notice. Elijah Oliver's gross cauliflower ear Stephanie Hampton making fun of my clothing choices. Jake Marnin was a JV kid and won the cadet triple crown 2014 – Year 16 – Mat Talk Coltan Williams from Texas, OMG that throw in Cadet FS vs. Wilson Smith of NC Johnny Blankenship and Trey Meyer going through my table, and through me — no STWP tonight folks. 2015 – Year 17 – Mat Talk How good those cadet champs were. Gable Steveson, Schwartz, RBY, Raimo, Warner. Wittlake's shoes. Interviewed the Mayor of Fargo for Short Time. He lied about there not being any construction around town. 2016 – Year 18 – Mat Talk Turf burned down. Nothing else matters. 2017- Year 19 – Mat Talk Alabama’s Sam Latona won the state’s first Junior freestyle championship. The soon-to-be Virginia Tech signee claimed gold at 106 pounds. Two months before they would win Cadet World Championships, Will Lewan and Aaron Brooks won Fargo titles. No Turf, so Herd & Horns was the replacement venue for mugs. There weren’t nearly as many shenanigans there, simply because it was cleaner, neater and had better food. 2018 – Year 20 – Mat Talk The Turf re-opened. There was again cornhole to be played. Willie, Spey and myself championed the first ever Wrestling Trivia night. Spey dropped some quality knowledge, all the while Willie answered ONE question, then paraded around the restaurant like he was the freaking MVP. Entries here were 4,999, just one below the elusive 5,000. Carson Manville represented Pennsylvania, however that works, and won double Cadet titles. Jakason Burks was mighty impressive, winning Nebraska’s first Cadet freestyle title since Thomas Gilman represented the state in 2010. Super beastly crop of champions on the Junior freestyle side of things too with pretty much everyone being a hammer. Introduced Earl Smith to Fargo. Ashley Sword showed me that I could get free nachos with the Buffalo Wild Wings app. I was also interviewed by Wayne Fish. Zach Elam generally thought I was mad at him. Discovered Labby’s has Castle Cream Ale on draft – the last night we were there. 2019- Year 21 – Mat Talk The mug turns 21. The bartenders at The Turf are tired of hearing that story. Things I can't remember the year, but are of note. — The year the first session wa

If you recently listened to the episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast where Kyle Klingman and I talked about our experiences 10 years ago with the Wrestling 411 project, you’ll know that year, I totaled my car and had to buy a new one. Well, it’s almost fitting that we put a bow on that year in an episode and my trusty 2008 Chevy Trailblazer finally got retired. My wife and I said the last time we got the car out of the shop - which happened to be in Iowa City prior to the World Cup - that this was the last repair. Anything else, and we’d get a new car. Sure enough, the driver’s side window went on the blink and with winter the way it is, that was the final straw. And no, we are NOT minivan folk. So rather than sit and watch wrestling on Saturday, I listened to ODU close out Foreman Field with a football victory and watched updates on Twitter - I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, an update for you, the wrestling fan, on the pertinent happenings in and around college wrestling for November 17. This day was actually pretty loaded when you look at it. There were 84 dual meets and over a dozen tournaments across all divisions - and that’s also exactly what this program covers - all divisions. If you do the math, there’s approximately 450 varsity college wrestling teams in this country. Division I accounts for 75 of those and it goes to 77 next year. That’s 17 percent of college wrestling. This show talks about that 17 percent and as much as the other 83 percent as possible. So enough with the car buying and the statistical pleasantries, let’s get to the upsets! Why are we starting with upsets? Because there were two of them on Saturday, the first seeing No. 24 North Carolina head to the valley of the sun and knock off No. 8 Arizona State in Tempe. The Tar Heels benefitted from a major decision at 141 pounds by Jaime Hernandez and a fall from Devin Kane at 174 and a rare brother vs. brother matchup at 285 pounds. In case you’re wondering, returning national champion Zahid Valenica of Arizona State bumped up to 184 and beat All-American Chip Ness 9-6. That bump opened the door open for Kane to pin Jacen Petersen in the third period. With Carolina leading 16-15, Cory Daniel bested his younger brother Brady Daniel 12-3 to cement the upset for Coleman Scott’s squad. The other big upset on the day saw unranked Pitt pick up falls from Micky Phillipi and Taleb Rahmani as the Panthers from Pittsburgh knocked off the 14th-ranked Panthers of Northern Iowa 21-19. UNI led 19-15 heading into the final two bouts, but a pair of transfers - Kellan Stout and Demetrius Thomas - both picked up six-point decisions to give Keith Gavin his biggest win of his coaching career. Thomas, an NAIA national champion as a freshman and a runner-up a year ago, beat UNI’s Carter Isley 9-3 to make it a final. In Brookings, South Dakota, over 1,800 people were a bit let down as Seth Gross didn’t weigh-in, denying the much anticipated Gross vs. Daton Fix match from happening. The dual, however, wasn’t even much of a consideration as No. 4 Oklahoma State smashed host South Dakota State 45-6. The only Cowboy loss was an injury default at 149 pounds by Boo Lewallen. No. 8 NC State won three duals at the Wolfpack Duals, topping Davidson 47-6 and then picking up wins over Division II UNC Pembroke 40-0 and NAIA Reinhardt 35-6. The rest of the Pack gets to the mats on Sunday at the Wolfpack Wrestling Club Open in Raleigh. Trailing 15-14 with just one bout to go, No. 9 Cornell needed All-American Max Dean to deliver a victory. He did that, but did it with some flare as Dean pinned Jackson Moomau in the first period to lift the Big Red past visiting West Virginia 20-15. West Virginia jumped out to a 9-0 lead after picking up wins at 197, 285 and 125. Noah Adams had the duals’ most notable win, a 13-7 win over nationally ranked Ben Honis of Cornell. We also saw Vito Arujau wrestling at 133 and Chaz Tucker up at 141 for the Big Red. Hrmmmm. No. 21 Utah Valley swept a trio of duals as the Wolverines improved to 5-1 with wins over Northern Illinois, Clarion and Harper College. What was one of the most interesting, and perhaps unusual things of this quad at Northern Illinois was the three matches lost by Harper College, which is a junior college in Illinois, were by identical 44-3 scores - and it wasn’t the same winner. Hrm. There were a ton of duals in the world of Division III with Roanoke, Virginia hosting the Southeast Duals. Mount Union, which was fresh off its big win over Baldwin Wallace this week, went 4-0 with a 32-15 win over Messiah, a 33-14 win over Lycoming and a pair of shutouts, 54-0 over Huntingdon and 51-0 over Penn College. Wilkes also went 4-0, beating Averett 27-12, Bluefield 51-0, Greensboro 33-10 and Otterbein 30-21. Central College - they’re the Dutch and coached by a guy named Van Kley - fitting I know - went out to Muhlenberg in Pennsylvania and won five duals to come away with the title at the Scotty Woods Duals. Central beat host Muhlenberg 36-6, Washington & Jefferson 42-11 and Keystone 54-3 as well as two shutout wins over a pair of junior colleges. Olivet swept the Comet Duals, going 4-0 with wins over Manchester, Millikin, Cornell College and Mt. St. Joseph. Individually, Manchester’s JaVon Phillips was most impressive, pinning all four of his opponents on the day at 157 pounds. Up in New England, Matt Oney picked up his first win as the new head coach at WPI as the Engineers, yeah, go figure a Polytechnic school would be called the Engineers, beat Castleton 31-19. What was most notable though at the WPI duals was No. 14 Roger Williams picking off No. 24 Stevens Tech 24-18. Anthony Malfitano’s pin at 197 pounds was the back-breaker, giving the Hawks the win. We did have some tournament action to tackle with the Navy Classic taking place in Annapolis. Michigan State had two champions and nine placewinners overall to capture the team title with 126 points. Indiana was second with 95.5, followed by Navy and Old Dominion. Six different teams had champions, as Michigan State was led by individual champions RayVon Foley at 125 pounds and Cameron Caffey at 184. Foley beat Ohio’s Shakur Laney 7-4, while Caffey beat Old Dominion’s Antonio Agee 12-6. Navy had two champs - Casey Cobb at 133 and Nicholas Gil at 141. Gil beat All-American Sa’Derian Perry 7-6. Other champions were Josh Heil of Campbell at 149, Larry Early of ODU at 157, Jonathan Viruet of Brown at 165, Andrew Morgan of Campbell at 174, Jake Kleimola of Indiana at 197 and Zack Parker of Ohio at 285. Host Springfield won the Doug Parker Invitational, placing seven and outdistancing second-place Centenary 111.5 to 102.5. Nine different teams had champions with Springfield’s Ryan Peters at 141 and heavyweight Joe Fusco picking up titles for the Pride. Some notables from the opens around the country: At Lindenwood Ohio State’s Malik Heinselman edged Iowa State’s Alex Mackall 11-10 to take top honors at 125 pounds. Iowa State’s Austin Gomez reportedly stormed back from a big deficit to claim a 15-13 win over Danny Swan of Division II Lindenwood in the finals at 133. Iowa’s Vince Turk beat Iowa State’s Ian Parker 6-5 at 141. Iowa’s Nelson Brands won at 165, beating former Hawkeye Joey Gunther in the semifinals on his way to the title. NAIA national champion Lucas Lovvorn of Baker won the title at 174. Among his notable wins was a 5-4 win over Iowa State’s Marcus Coleman in the semifinals. Illinois’ Emery Parker and Iowa State’s Willie Miklus won titles at 184 and 197, respectively, while Iowa freshman Anthony Cassioppi had three falls and a major on his way to a heavyweight crown. Also of note, Oklahoma State freshman Travis Wittlake won five matches to claim gold at 174 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division … All these results and even the stuff I didn’t mention is available at the nation’s most comprehensive college wrestling results and schedule page at almanac.mattalkonline.com or just click the scoreboard link on the main page of Mat Talk Online. SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY! (I made this part up on the fly) This is Short Time Shots, a comically unfunny wrestling podcast aimed at giving you, the wrestling fan, everything you need to know about the day’s happenings in college wrestling. I’m your host Jason Bryant, and here’s something about me, November 11 marks the 10-year anniversary of my first ever podcast. That was called Wrestling 411 with my co-host Kyle Klingman. I’ll actually break that historic show down later this month as Kyle and I talk about that doomed but life-changing project and its impact on wrestling, whether you remember it or not. Speaking of things people wouldn’t rather remember - and I’m talking about our friends in Kent, Ohio. No. 1 Penn State won its 46th dual in a row as the Nittany Lions blasted Kent State 52-3 at sold-out Rec Hall. After dropping the first match at 125 pounds, Penn State reeled off nine straight bonus victories, including six falls in a row, to trounce the Golden Flashes, who wrestled without returning All-American Kyle Conel at 197 pounds. The debut of Roman Bravo-Young was sound as the true freshman from Arizona registered his first collegiate fall over Tim Rooney at 133. Just two days earlier, Rooney lost a tough one to Iowa’s Austin DeSanto in a dual at Kent State. What impressed me the most about Bravo-Young was his top work. He good. We use that F-word a lot around Penn State - Fun. Love them or hate them, Penn State is freaking fun to watch - probably not that fun to wrestle, though. No. 5 Michigan opened up its dual season with a 32-12 win over rival Central Michigan up in Mount Pleasant, a result leaving Bloodround’s Kevin Claunch torn to his core. Big Wolverine bonus wins were registered by Stevan Micic at 133, Kanen Storr at 141, Malik Amine at 149, Logan Massa at 165 and Myles Amine at 174. We did NOT see Mason Parris at heavyweight, as an FYI. No football-like comebacks for ODU on the wrestling mats on Sunday. A day after its football team rallied from a 28-0 deficit to beat North Texas, ODU’s wrestling team fell behind 18-0 … and it got worse as No. 7 Missouri continued its dominance over the Monarchs as the Tigers rolled into the Ted Constant Convocation Center and topped ODU 40-3 in an early-season MAC contest. The match which saw the most eyes came at 141 pounds where a pair of All-Americans tangled. It was Missouri’s Jaydin Eierman who came away with the W, pinning Eastern Michigan transfer Sa’Derian Perry in 5:05. Missouri also picked up bonus wins at 125, 133, 165, 174 and 197 pounds to roll. At the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, a big crowd saw No. 11 Arizona State top No. 19 South Dakota State 30-9 in the dual meet coaching debut for Damion Hahn of SDSU. Nothing really unexpected here. The dual’s two returning NCAA champions, Seth Gross of South Dakota State and Zahid Valencia of Arizona State both scored falls for their respective teams. The bout that was probably of the most interest in terms of a potential toss up went Arizona State’s way at 149 pounds where Josh Maruca topped Henry Pohlmeyer 5-3. ASU All-Americans Ryan Millhof and Josh Shields won big as well. No. 24 North Carolina opened up its season with a 23-10 over Chattanooga. The Mocs jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after the first three weights, highlighted by Chris Debien’s 10-5 win over A.C. Headlee at 141. After that, it was all Tar Heels as Coleman Scott’s squad swept the last seven bouts. Buffalo went 3-0 in sweeping a quad hosted by Bucknell on Sunday. The Bulls topped VMI 34-5, Cleveland State 34-6 and host Bucknell 25-12. It wasn’t smooth sailing the entire time for coach John Stutzman’s team as Bucknell did steal a few bouts. At 125 pounds, Geo Barzona knocked off Buffalo’s Kyle Akins 5-4, while Bucknell 157-pounder Zach Hartman upended Alex Smythe, who was trending upwards in the eyes of many after his rapid improvement. VMI’s Neal Richards went 3-0 in his three bouts at 174 pounds. In the Big 12, Fresno State cruised by Northern Colorado 34-4 before they headed south down I-25 and were greeted by an Air Force team that wasn’t going to let them do the Colorado D1 double. Air Force beat Fresno State 19-15 with the swing victory coming in overtime at 174 where Air Force’s Randy Meneweather beat the Bulldogs’ Ricky Padilla 3-1 in sudden victory. Iowa State opened up its dual slate with a 37-3 win over SIU Edwardsville. Impressive performances turned in by Austin Gomez at 133 as he earned a first-period technical fall. Ian Parker and Marcus Coleman added falls for the Cyclones at 141 and 174 pounds. In Division II, No. 6 Pitt-Johnstown topped No. 5 Wheeling Jesuit 19-15 in Wheeling. Fifth-ranked Levi Niebauer picked up a major decision at 197 pounds the put the bout out of reach and gave coach Pat Pecora his 583rd dual meet victory. Yes, he’s in his 43rd year at the helm. Central Oklahoma gave up the first and last wins of the dual and thumped NAIA Oklahoma City 34-6. Oklahoma City head coach Sam Hazewinkel, the dual threat World and Olympic teamer spent the last two seasons prior as an assistant coach at Central Oklahoma. In Division III, Muhlenberg won the Electric City Duals at Scranton going 4-0. The MULES beat host Scranton, Keystone, Lackawanna and the club team from Temple. No idea whether or not there were any Man in the High Castle references at the event. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Watch Season 3 on Amazon Prime. Going back to New York as the round-robin style Journeymen Collegiate Classic took place a day after the Northeast Duals. Some of the top results saw Lehigh’s Nick Farro knock off Oklahoma’s Christian Moody 3-2 at 125 pounds. Lehigh’s Brandon Paetzell beat Wyoming All-American Montorie Bridges in pool competition, then fell to Purdue’s Ben Thornton 5-1 in the final at that particular weight class pairing. Oklahoma’s Dom Demas had a solid outing at 141 pounds, beating Lock Haven’s Kyle Shoop, Wyoming’s Sam Turner and Purdue’s Nate Limmex. Not too shabby, especially as he got the fall over Limmex at 1:38. NC State’s Justin Oliver topped Davion Jeffries of Oklahoma 7-2 in the A-Bracket final at 149 pounds. Army West Point’s Luke Weiland emerged at 157’s A bracket. Weiland topped Oklahoma’s Justin Thomas 9-0 in the final. Thomas defeated Appalachian State’s Matt Zovitoski and Utah Valley’s Grant LaMont in his side of the pool. Lock Haven All-American Chance Marsteller beat Wyoming’s Branson Ashworth 7-4 in the A-bracket final at 165 pounds. Lehigh’s Jordan Kutler beat Purdue’s Dylan Lydy 3-1 at 174. NC State’s Nick Reenan’s return to folkstyle wrestling was successful one. He topped Lehigh’s Ryan Preisch 5-1 in the top bracket final at 184 pounds. Army West Point’s Rocco Caywood had a win over Lehigh’s Chris Weiler in the pool competition before knocking off NC State’s Malik McDonald 4-2 to claim the title at 197 pounds. Lehigh’s Jake Jakobsen won the B bracket at the weight and 197 is shaping up to be real interesting at Lehigh already this year. Lehigh heavyweight Jordan Wood topped Utah Valley’s Tate Orndorff 6-0 in the final at 285 pounds. Orndorff had a solid 6-5 win over Lock Haven’s Thomas Haines in pool competition. At the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open up in Binghamton where the Bearcats program is celebrating its 50th wrestling anniversary, Cornell was strong to quite strong. At 133, Chaz Tucker beat Vitali Arujau 7-5 in an all-Big Red Final. At 157, Josh Humphreys of Lehigh came away with three falls, a tech and a major on his way to the title. Two of those wins were over NCAA qualifiers Hunter Ladnier of Harvard and Mike D’Angelo, wrestling unattached for Princeton. Brown’s Jonathan Viruet majored George Mason’s Colston DiBlasi 11-0 in the finals at 165 pounds. NC State’s Trent Hidlay knocked off All-American Brandon Womack of Cornell in the second round, then beat Penn State’s Mason Manville in the semifinals en route to the title at 174 pounds. Pretty good starting weekend for the true freshman. Other notable winners were Brown’s Christian LaFragola at 197 and George Mason’s Matt Voss at 285. At the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, the Ohio State Buckeyes pretty much dominated the field. Well, there isn’t too much pretty much, it was dominating. There were a lot of OSU wrestle-offs in the finals. Rather than go through all of them, here’s the notables. Micah Jordan topped teammate Sammy Sasso 9-7 in the final at 149 pounds. Ke-Shawn Hayes won at 157, topping Elijah Cleary 6-5. Cleary upended Michigan’s Will Lewan 3-1 in sudden victory in the semifinals. People notice since Lewan topped teammate Alec Pantaelo last week at the Michigan State Open. Ethan Smith topped teammate TeShan Campbell 8-5 in the finals at 174. More Ohio State stuff happened with titles at 184 with Gavin Hoffman winning, Chase Singletary won at 285. Singletary defeated Mason Parris of Michigan in the semis and beat D2 All-American Kam Teacher of Notre Dame College. Short Time from Fargo rolls on as Jimmy Kennedy and Nick Marable earned berths on the U.S. Freestyle World Team and we talk with announcer Sandy Stevens, who has announced 43 of the 44 Junior National freestyle championships. Men's Freestyle - July 24Best of Three Match 2Two big four-point moves and one takedown was all that Jimmy Kennedy needed to beat 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott 10-0 in the second match at 61kg to claim a spot on the U.S. World Team for the first time. The match was slowed due to the cut above Scott's left eye. Kennedy won the Yasar Dogu back in February in Turkey. When Nick Marable last stepped on the raised platform in Fargo with a big match, he came away as Tennessee's first Cadet freestyle champion back in 2003. On Thursday, Marable stepped off the mat after his 8-2 victory over James Green as a member of the U.S. World Team. Marable's victory in the second match in the best-of-three series saw a lot of the trademark counter offense he's known for. He also showed proficiency in par terre, turning Green twice. Best of Three Match 1Jimmy Kennedy converted a double leg takedown with 41 seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie and top Coleman Scott 5-2 in the first match of a best-of-three series at 61kg. Scott jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of pushouts before Kennedy got on the board with a pushout of his own on a double leg attack with 14 seconds remaining in the first. Kennedy tied the score at 2-2 with a second pushout from a double leg attempt and went ahead with 41 to go with another double attempt. A late attack by Scott drew ooohs from the crowd, but Scott couldn't get a third supporting point down to gain control. He challenged and lost, giving Kennedy the fifth point. Action as a little slower at 70kg as Nick Marable topped James Green 2-1 in the first match of the best-of-three series. Green took the lead 1-0 with a minute to go in the first after scoring a caution point after Marable was unable to score after being put on the shot clock. In the second, Marable initiated a halfshot, getting Green to bite and counter with a shot of his own. Marable battled the position and got the go-behind for the takedown and the 2-1 lead, which held for the victory.
