Annabel Reader and Dan Huling are simply in love with creating shoes. The Colorado Shoe School was a natural evolutionary step from Dan and Annabel's past 20 years of creative and artistic work. Annabel earned a bachelor's degree in Contemporary Dance and Choreography from Unitec, Auckland, New Zealand and Dan focused on Sculpture and Printmaking as he earned a BFA from Colorado State University.Over the years, they went on to work in a variety of art fields as costume creators, performers, dancers and contraption builders for their own companies like The Handsome Little Devils and EyeSoar Performance and for large entities including New Belgium Brewing Co., Colorado Opera, Colorado State University, Theatre Aspen, and Cirque Du Soleil.Annabel's costume work led her to begin exploring the art of shoe making and in late 2017 they had a fate changing opportunity to attend a Shoe School in New Zealand. After traveling the world as performers they were playing with a change in career and attending this workshop was the catalyst to starting the Colorado Shoe School. They love sharing skills, teaching others, creating things that don't currently exist and absolutely love shoes so it was a short distance to building a custom shoe making studio in order to teach others how to make their own shoes. In 2018 Colorado Shoe School opened its doors! They focus both on the functionality and the methods behind shoe making, but the main drive is letting whimsy and fun lead to a new creation.  Both of their career paths have required them to come up with creative interpretations of characters, inventive ways to design things and build alternative dream worlds. Simply creating and making things that have never been seen in this world before.###Your hosts of Are You Waiting for Permission? are Meridith Grundei and Joseph Bennett. Figure out what are MUST HAVES then set the budget from there. Find where you can borrow, etc. Discuss your priorities before you discuss your number. Top Lessons Learned What to spend money on 1. Food! 2. Your photographer! 3. Small but thoughtful details that really make the experience What to totally skip 1. Try to keep in mind what your guests will feel and what they would remember and take away. If it won't have an impact or be memorable, then skip it! 2. Rings - Suki and Anthony had their jeweler make sterling silver rings to use at the ceremony and then after the wedding they invested in gold bands. 3. No one will cry if you don't have cake. 4. Favors 5. Attire: wear pieces that make you happy, and let the wedding party choose their own outfits. 6. Decor - Suki and Anthony used decorations from their own home. Why they wish they'd had a coordinator Day-Of. Suki and Anthony really wish they HAD hired one. It would have made the show run much smoother. Not that it was a catastrophe, but that would have helped immensely. What they learned about the bar service They did not trying to provide a full bar. Instead, they had a couple of craft cocktails they could mix in batches. Mostly, beer and wine are the best budget friendly bar options. There is no need to give the guests all the options. What super successful moments surprised them on their wedding day? The guests loved the experience, even the skeptical ones were thrilled by it. Rehearsals: 1. These are a MUST HAVE, especially if you have limited vendors and staff. 2. Helpful to have a meeting beforehand to cover everyone's duties. Even if you have covered it. Face-to-face is key. Vendors Research. Ask friends. Don't be afraid to be upfront with your budget. Ask them to work with you. If they are the right vendor for you, they will help you design a package that matches your needs. Some vendors may say no, and that's okay - it's part of the process! Allow Yourself To Be Flexible 1. Don't be afraid to ask for help 2. Find people you love and trust. They want to help! They are there for YOU. 3. Be honest with what you have. 4. Be upfront with vendors and, if needed, guests. It's okay if your budget isn't huge! Tom Blachford and Kate Ballis are one of my favourite creative couples. They are both photographers, though this hasn’t always been the case. For the first few years of their relationship, it was only Tom who was the photographer, while Kate was working as a lawyer. Yet what started as a shared passion between them has grown into a thriving art practice and ever-expanding commercial endeavour. They have built a highly successful wedding photography company, RaspberryRobot, which allows them to support their travel adventures - and it was on one such journey that Tom fell in love with the architecture of Palm Springs, which led him to create the Midnight Modern series, which opens in Sydney this Thursday, May 26 at The Black Eye Gallery in Darlinghurst in Sydney. Of all the insights into their life and process that they shared, it was the way in which they combined their strengths to maximize both of their offerings as artists that I really admired. I was very excited to sit down and chat with Tom – and Kate to talk about sharing life, space and practice in this, The Naked Creative Show: Couples Edition, all about Tom Blachford and Kate Ballis.    Midnight Modern by Tom Blachford opens Thursday, May 26 at The Black Eye Gallery in Darlinghurst.
