Dear listeners, in this special segment, not only will you hear from the incredible Alphonso James, but this will also be our last episode.Joseph and I are incredibly grateful for the support you have shown us over the past few years, and we can't thank our incredible guests enough for showing up and sharing their truths about how they haven't waited for permission to live the life they want. We also want to thank those who are still waiting and brave enough to share the moments when they have felt stuck. Your stories have inspired us, and we hope they have inspired our listeners as well.As we close this chapter, we want to remind you to keep pushing forward, embracing your journey, and never giving up on the life you envision for yourself. Thank you for being a part of this amazing experience with us. Now, please meet Alphonso James: Alphonso James was a 17-year-old child in 1985 when he was arrested and falsely convicted of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide for the murder of a man he'd never seen or met. After a brief two-day trial, he was sentenced to Life plus 5 years in prison. Although he was physically confined and dealt with seemingly impossible obstacles to his release, Alphonso found freedom and liberation within himself. He went from a 3rd grade reading level to earning degrees in theology and culinary arts and authoring a memoir. Alphonso worked faithfully and with courageous belief on his own process of inner healing, and today he walks in a hard-earned spirit of love and forgiveness. With tireless persistence, and the work of the Wisconsin Innocence Project, Alphonso was finally freed in 2017 after 32 years of confinement for a crime he did not commit. Besides righting the wrong of his conviction once and for all, Alphonso is committed to inspiring others to break free of the prisons within themselves and pursue their own journey of healing. https://www.yourcyberpath.com/104/ In this episode, our awesome host Jason Dion is back again with another episode of the Your Cyber Path podcast. This time, he's accompanied by an amazing guest, Meridith Grundei. Meridith is a renowned public speaking coach and owner of Grundei Coaching who specializes in public speaking and presentation skills. Meridith explains that understanding your client and doing your due diligence of research and studying will help you immensely in your attempts to simplify any complex concept to any level of audience. You need to figure out your objective, point out all the key takeaways, and choose the ones that support your argument. It is crucial for you to find out what sets you apart as a presenter and understanding that will help you be more engaging during your presentations. Starting with a story or an open-ended question usually tends to make people lean in and give more attention, and finding an emotional connection with your audience will get them to invest more cognitive attention to your talk. It's also important to not try to be different for the sake of being different, but to try to innovate to be better. One example of being different is trying to adapt your stories to different audiences. Make sure you always try to make the audience feel like they're the hero, because most of the time, the audience doesn't care about the speaker but about themselves, and so shifting the focus towards the audience really helps keep them engaged and invested in your presentation. Meridith also emphasizes that if you are going to practice only two things, these should be your introduction and call to action, as your introduction will give you a good boost into your presentation and the call to action makes sure your talk is well concluded. Moving to a different point, recognizing that anxiety and fear is a natural reaction can help you significantly. Doing things like breathing exercises and turning the anxiety into excitement in any way can drastically ease out any anxiety and fear you might have. Finally, you need to realize that with more practice, you are going to understand yourself better, and understand how you can improvise with different situations that can happen during your presentations. A less resilient person might have been deterred by these warnings, but not Meridith. She's a self-identified rebel and she was determined to prove that she can make it. This wasn't easy. She was working in an industry where peers would often work for free to get credits. Free wasn't part of Meridith's vocabulary. Along the way she created and ran improv workshops to supplement her acting work. She was always focused on creating her own path to success. Today, Meridith is the owner of Grundei Coaching, LLC, specializing in public speaking and presentation skills. As an award-winning theatre director, producer, and former Second City improv teacher, she recognized the similarities between performing for audiences on stage every night and presenting to clients/colleagues every day. However, the latter didn't have the right tools to bring their stories to life. Grundei Coaching, LLC provides presentation and public speaking consultation, individual training and development and creative team solutions using improvisational theatre techniques to build trust, empathy and out-of-the-box thinking. Meridith's clients include entrepreneurs looking to expand their brand by appearing on more stages, and managers, leaders and teams in both the tech and medical fields. Some of her most recent clients include Amazon AWS, Merck, Idorsia and the Iowa Department of Health.
Want to learn how to connect with your jury? And how to present better at your next conference? Then here is the answer! In this episode of "The Free Lawyer" podcast, Gary interviews public speaking coach Meridith Grundei about her journey as a performer and how she became a public speaking coach. They discuss the importance of building confidence as a speaker, the role of mindset in managing nerves, and the value of practicing and trusting oneself. They also touch on the importance of storytelling in engaging audiences and the pitfalls of reading from a script. Meridith shares tips on effective body language and eye contact during presentations, and reflects on her own journey and advises her younger self to "get over yourself" and keep showing up, even after a bad experience. As international speaking coaches and founders of Remarkable Speaking, Shelley Goldstein and Mark Bossert have trained thousands of people in over 40 countries from just about every industry on how to become confident and compelling speakers. Shelley struggled to memorize scripts making her incredibly nervous and tongue-tied when she had to present. Mark was terrified to speak up because he was anxiety ridden and lost his confidence from sleepless nights. The coaches met in a public speaking course. The investment and experience mastering those skills became Shelley and Mark's inspiration in developing their signature transforming methodology to help others overcome their speaking fears. When you speak remarkably, you unlock your inner voice to be seen, speak with intention and make meaningful connections anywhere, anytime about anything. remarkablespeaking.com###Your hosts of Are You Waiting for Permission? are Meridith Grundei and Joseph Bennett. Adina is from West Orange, New Jersey, and is now living in the East Village of NYC. She founded Knock Knock, Give a Sock, a Non-Profit focused on Humanizing Homelesness one sock at a time. KKGS is a nonprofit that collects socks for the homeless while also building relationships between neighbors living in homes and in shelters by bringing them together for dinner. Adina has also authored 2 children's books on homelessness. Adina believes these books and dinners can help humanize homelessness and change the way we interact with our neighbors on the streets. She also adds: “One cold night in November, I was handing out sandwiches to people experiencing homelessness in NYC when one man approached me. “It's great that you're giving out sandwiches,” he said, “but one thing we really need is socks, especially as winter approaches.” Here I was, sandwiches in hand, assuming I knew the best way to help people. In reality, helping is about listening, and hearing the needs of different communities. It was a powerful lesson, and I wanted to put it into action. I began that night, with a simple step: I went door-to-door on my NYU dorm floor and knocked on everyone's door. I asked if they would donate just one pair of their own socks to someone experiencing homelessness. To my surprise I got over 40 pairs of socks in a single night, from a single floor. The next morning I walked out of my dorm room to find a huge pile of socks in front of my door from other people who had heard of what happened. It started small, but I knew it was such a simple concept that it could easily be grown. College students love to do good, but sometimes they need a literal knock on their door to do so. And most everyone has an extra pair of socks they can donate. That's when the initiative Knock Knock, Give a Sock was created.”###Your hosts of Are You Waiting for Permission? are Meridith Grundei and Joseph Bennett. Rebecca had over 30 jobs before the age of 30. She knew how to find a job in her sleep, but where she really struggled was with WHAT she wanted to do. Now with over 9 years of training, education, conversations and most importantly, trialing and erroring with hundreds of clients, she's a pro at helping people who are stuck like she was to get clarity on what it is they actually want to be doing and GET MOVING towards something that makes them feel alive again. Rebecca lives her life as a nomad. She currently lives out of AirBnb's, hopping between Vancouver, Whitehorse (in Northern Canada), and Mexico. She sometimes ventures to other places too, like the month she spent in Switzerland this past summer. Living an unconventional life as a 35 year old woman comes with its unique rewards and perks. She also loves to emphasize that there are problems no matter what choices we make in life, and embraces the challenges of nomad-life over the challenges of living in one place. At least for now! We knew that it would be difficult for Hersh to get through 15 episodes of TTF without using a British accent. It took his interview with Meridith Grundei - a passionate and charismatic public speaking and presentation skills coach - to set off that reaction. As she explains, Meridith created Confidently Speaking, a form of coaching that helps people perform in a safe space so they can analyze and improve upon the experiences. It's really about being yourself, she says, "bringing yourself to the stage" - and leaning into all the flaws and foibles that make us the beautiful humans we are.
