"The opening day of the Tenth General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene, June 16, 1940, was a memorable one in the annals of the church. The blessing of God was unmistakably present from the opening song until the closing benediction. The morning communion service with Doctor Goodwin's message lifted us to heights of spiritual fellowship with God and with one another. Doctor Williams' characteristically stirring message in the afternoon was a challenge to better things for the days to come. The evening sermon was delivered by Dr. J. B. Chapman. His subject was "Christ and the Bible." It was an eloquent, scholarly and inspiring message that seemed to electrify the congregation of almost 6,000 listeners that crowded the great auditorium. Requests and pleas for the publication of the sermon were made both to the speaker and to the Publishing House executives. Therefore the message is now available, for the benefit of many who heard it and wish to read it as well as hear it, also for the many thousands who were not privileged to attend the service but who through reading this address will be led to a deeper love for the Bible and the Christ of the Bible." P. H. LUNN This sermon was accessed from the Wesley Center Online. The Wesley Center Online is a collection of historical and scholarly resources about the Wesleyan Tradition, theology, Christianity, and the Nazarene church hosted by the Wesley Center for Applied Theology at Northwest Nazarene University. Send us a textIn this episode, I speak with sci-fi writer, editor, and publisher Jean-Paul L. Garnier, who shares his journey from avid reader to the owner of Space Cowboy Books, a thriving indie bookstore and publishing house in Joshua Tree, California. He reveals how science fiction offers writers complete creative freedom to explore human psychology through fantastical settings.More than just a desert bookstore, Space Cowboy Books represents a multifaceted literary ecosystem. Starting in 2016 as a modest shed, it quickly expanded into a proper storefront near Joshua Tree National Park – where the stunning landscape and dark skies provide constant inspiration. The store's "free books for kids" program showcases Garnier's commitment to childhood literacy, eventually growing into partnerships with local nonprofits to build school libraries. Whether you're a science fiction enthusiast, aspiring writer, independent bookshop lover, or simply curious about literary entrepreneurship, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse into how one passionate reader created a thriving literary hub in the California desert. Send me your writing and publishing questions! Many indie authors find the idea of creating a publishing house overwhelming. But with the right steps, it becomes both manageable and highly beneficial. Here's why setting up a publishing house is essential and how to do it.First, it's crucial to understand that forming a publishing house is not about creating a giant company like Amazon. Instead, it's about legally separating your personal and professional assets. This separation is vital as an author, because it protects your personal finances from any potential legal issues that may arise. While many creatives shy away from the business aspects of publishing, treating your book as a business can help you reach a broader audience. This means embracing some business tasks (even those you might not enjoy, like accounting. Just me?). Setting up a publishing house may seem daunting, but it's simpler than it appears. The key is to create a legal entity, like an LLC, to protect your assets, which isn't nearly as complicated or expensive as it used to be. You can often set up an LLC yourself or use services like LegalZoom for additional support. You don't need a complex infrastructure to start a publishing house. A simple logo for your book's spine and a business bank account are sufficient. Today, many online banking options make it easy to set up a no-fee, no-minimum business account without visiting a physical bank. There's also no need for an elaborate office setup or expensive branding packages. The challenge often comes when authors overcomplicate this step, perhaps assuming they need an extensive branding package, a physical office space, or expensive accounting software. But none of this is necessary. It's a worthwhile investment for protecting your assets and managing your book sales professionally. For a detailed guide on this process, including how to create a logo and manage business essentials, refer to the third module of "Publish the Damn Book Already," which walks you through the necessary steps without overwhelming you with unnecessary details, ensuring you can focus on what you do best: writing.RESOURCES MENTIONED:Episode 1 of publishing series: WTH is an ISBN Publish the Damn Book Already self-publishing courseWave accounting: www.waveapps.com/accountingWrite the Damn Book Already is a weekly podcast featuring interviews with authors as well as updates and insights on writing craft and the publishing industry. Tyrone L. Edwards Sr's Journey Tyrone is a convicted felon who has completely turned his life around. While incarcerated, Tyrone wrote a total of sixty books, six of which have been published. Tyrone had a vision of turning one of his books, War Behind Bars into a stage play. He made that happen with just his own financial backing. The cast is all local adults and youth. The majority of the cast has been incarcerated or have had run-ins with the law. Some of them have never acted before, danced or sung in front of an audience. War Behind Bars first premiered at the historic Madame CJ Walker Theater in January of 2022, second showing was at the Warren Performing Arts Center in April of 2022 and the finale was performed at Pike Performing Arts Center in April 2023. Some of these experiences have not been very pleasant, to say the least. Experiences like this are what led Tyrone to start his own publishing company, Te's Publishing House, and his not-for-profit Te's House of Thoughts. Te's House of Thoughts offers free assistance to individuals on how to put their creative thoughts into book form and publish their own book, how to use their creative talents in acting, singing, and dance, and even how to turn their creative hobby into a business. In “Blowout,” a woman races against time and a previously undocumented geological phenomenon to save her brother on the surface of Mars. In “Ganger,” a young woman trapped in a city run by machines must transfer her consciousness into an artificial body and find a way to give her life purpose. In “Debut,” Nairobi-based technical support engineer tries to understand what is happening when an AI art system begins malfunctioning in ways that could change the world. In this episode, Steven noted what Pathos Press can offer LA authors who might think to query them, along with some (not all) indie publishers:"Small publishing houses tend to be much more willing to consider challenging or experimental works, especially by new authors without an established reputation. Some indie publishers assign editors to their authors in order to ensure the quality of the final text of the book. With larger publishing houses, it is sometimes the case that editors serve to recalibrate aspects of the book's plot or characters they consider as being possibly detrimental to future sales. Often, indie publishing editors are concerned only with the ultimate integrity of the manuscript and guaranteeing the legibility and artistic vision of the author."Novels:"Disposable Thought""Grid City Overload" "Affliction Included""3rd & Orange""The Year I Went Away" ("El Año Que Me Fui")

Autism: A journey often misunderstood and undersupported…this conversation completely changed our outlook! Hello Family Brand community! It's Melissa here, and in this episode, I'm excited to bring you the amazing story of Patrick Hardy. Patrick is a remarkable father, author, illustrator, and a true pioneer in the realm of children's literature about autism. I found his content online by chance, and I am so grateful… His works and message have completely shifted our view on autism and how we can support families that have a child on the spectrum. His journey began in response to a deeply personal challenge: when his son, Sam was diagnosed with autism, Patrick discovered a significant lack of resources in children's books on the subject. This revelation led to the birth of the "My friend Sam" series, a collection of books that not only reflects Patrick's experiences with his son but also serves as a vital tool for families and educators in understanding and embracing the world of autism. With 14 books in French and 11 in English, Patrick has created a universe that resonates with countless families, bridging gaps and building connections. My conversation with Patrick sheds light on the transformative power of storytelling. His approach to writing and illustrating is not just about sharing personal stories; it's about sparking conversations, fostering empathy, and promoting a culture of acceptance. This aligns seamlessly with what we believe here at Family Brand – the importance of understanding and celebrating each family member's unique journey. Today, we dive into how Patrick's work has brought hope and understanding for many families. His journey from being a father grappling with his son's autism diagnosis to becoming an influential author and advocate is a profound example of turning personal experiences into opportunities for wide-reaching impact. In Schizophrenia: Science, Psychoanalysis, and Culture (Phoenix Publishing House, 2022), Kevin Volkan and Vamık Volkan present a comprehensive study of schizophrenia using a psychoanalytic lens on the existing interdisciplinary research. Over the last seventy years, mainstream research on the causes, prevalence, and treatment of schizophrenia has greatly diverged from psychoanalytic thinking. However, the emergence of the field of neuro-psychoanalysis brings hope that psychoanalytic metapsychology and clinical theory may once again provide valuable insight into understanding schizophrenia. Psychoanalytic treatment may not be appropriate for many sufferers but psychoanalysis does provide insight to inform and improve treatment. It can also illuminate what aspects of schizophrenia are common across cultures, where they present unique characteristics, and just how cultural variations occur. For any future improvement in understanding and treating schizophrenia, the cultural underpinnings and expressions of schizophrenic illness need to be made clear. For clinicians in the field, the authors' aim is to deepen insight and promote the use of psychotherapy and integrated treatments, while increasing sensitivity to cultural variations in schizophrenic disease. Accordingly, this book is divided into four sections. The first gives a brief overview and outline of the mainstream understanding of schizophrenia. The second drills down to focus on general psychoanalytic ideas about schizophrenia, culminating with a focus on problems with early object relations. The third looks at how psychoanalytic treatment can be successful in some cases. The fourth and final part discusses how views of the disorder and the disorder itself are affected by culture. The authors hope to generate insight and understanding of schizophrenic disorders which could lead to new approaches to treating and possibly preventing schizophrenia. It is a must-read for all clinicians and trainees working in the field and presents interesting ideas to anyone with an interest in the subject. Karyne Messina is a psychologist and a psychoanalyst with the Baltimore Washington Center for Psychoanalysis. She is on the medical staff at Suburban Hospital of Johns Hopkins Hospital. In this episode, Julie Lokun discusses the world of publishing and provides insights into different publishing options available to authors. She starts by emphasizing the importance of books as marketing tools for entrepreneurs and businesspeople like herself. Julie mentions her own publishing company, The Media Caster's Publishing House, and highlights the team behind it.She distinguishes between traditional publishing, hybrid publishing, and vanity press. Traditional publishing involves authors submitting manuscripts to literary agents or publishing houses, with publishers carefully selecting manuscripts with market potential. Julie advises authors to be cautious when approaching publishing agents, as legitimate agents should not charge upfront fees. If accepted by a traditional publisher, authors receive a contract covering various aspects such as editing, cover design, marketing, and distribution. Julie emphasizes the need to have someone review the contract and mentions that publishers are not responsible for author branding or publicity.Hybrid publishing combines elements of traditional and self-publishing. While these publishers may require a financial contribution from authors for book development, cover design, or editing, authors retain a higher percentage of royalties compared to traditional publishing. Professional services such as editing, cover design, and distribution are provided by the publisher.Self-publishing, the third option discussed, allows authors to have full control over the publishing process. Authors can upload their books to platforms like Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), IngramSpark, or Barnes & Noble. However, Julie strongly recommends investing in professional editing to ensure the book represents the author's brand effectively.Julie raises concerns about vanity press scams in the publishing industry. Vanity presses charge authors exorbitant fees for subpar or unnecessary services and often hold authors' books hostage. She advises authors to do thorough research, check with the Better Business Bureau, and read reviews before committing to any publishing company. Red flags to watch out for include demands for substantial upfront fees without clear service outlines, hybrid publishers requiring authors to pay for all publishing costs, and promises of instant success in exchange for hefty fees. Julie urges authors to protect their creative work and prioritize their integrity. She concludes by encouraging aspiring authors to believe in the power of their words and their potential as successful authors. Today I talked to Michaela Chamberlain, author of Misogyny in Psychoanalysis (Phoenix Publishing House, 2022) Chamberlain's book is a product of “cumulative trauma” whose original starting point was an interest in in menstruation where, in psychoanalytic literature filled with papers on “micturition and feces”, there is a “startling lack of writing on the monthly passing of menstrual blood.” Chamberlain realized that this absence was a symptom of something bigger. That something is misogyny. Working with a definition attributed to Kate Manne[1] misogyny is seen as “the law enforcement branch of sexism” and Chamberlain argues that we really have “to grapple with the law enforcement of the male gaze. The minute you free yourself from this or at least know what you're fighting it means you can think all sorts of things. The more we straightjacket ourselves with the laws of Freud the more we are lessening the possibilities for creativity, which surely has to be the point of psychoanalysis.” “We need to take on the trauma that's been caused by past analytic gods and really examine the continued use of psychoanalytic terms owned by a man to apply a man-made theory to women” and a discipline that has historically had “no trust in women to adequately understand their own experience.” Chamberlain references her training where the phrase “Bowlby said” was a way to remind her “to pay respect to her male elders and keep to my place. The analyst expected me to swallow the comment as truth in much the same was as Freud quotes are given to remind everyone of the rules of play.” After reviewing the foundations of psychoanalysis and the continued reification of the clearly misogynistic Oedipus complex, Chamberlain turns her focus to how this misogyny gets played out in the clinical setting. Chapter 4 “The misogynistic introject – a case study” is a painful story of a mother whose insight into the struggles of her child are rapidly dismissed “because she is the mother”. In this interview, recorded in May of 2023, Chamberlain observes that psychoanalytic institutes have yet to engage with the public protests around misogyny, the Women's Safety Movement, #MeToo, and #ReclaimTheseStreets. Whereas the Black Lives Matter movement has finally entered psychoanalytic institutes in the form of trainings, conferences, supervisions, and groups aimed at confronting legacies of racism in psychoanalysis no such movement has occurred with regards to misogyny following the horrific murder of Sarah Everard at the hands of a police officer in 2021 when the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, stated that “London streets are not safe for women or girls” and 50% of UK women reported they did not feel safe leaving their homes after dark. Misogyny in Psychoanalysis argues that women's experience in psychoanalysis has been “negatively hallucinated” and that “What is needed for psychoanalysis to take the brave first step of putting itself on the couch to grapple fully with its unconscious fantasies about women and begin coping with what it working hard not to see.” [1] Manne, K. For Scott Stripling, one archaeologist's trash has become his treasure. And through a process called wet sifting—a methodological revolution bring to light small or hidden artifacts that were previously missed at many archaeological digs—Stripling and his team have made an incredible discovery on Mount Ebal in the mountains of Samaria in Israel that could very well be one of the most significant finds in biblical history. Stripling, the Director of Excavations for the Associates for Biblical Research @DiggingForTruth and his team traveled to #MountEbal, about 50 miles north of Jerusalem, for a dig at the altar described in Joshua 8:30: “Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel on Mount Ebal, as Moses commanded the children of Israel.” It was a site that Stripling said Israeli archaeologist Adam Zertal had excavated in the 1980s and had “done a very good job on it. Stripling said he wanted to “check his dump pile there” to see if Zertal had missed anything of significance. Through wet sifting, what Stripling and his team found in Zertal's “dump pile” was a lead folding tablet with writing on the inside estimated to be 3,400 years old. Stripling says it's the oldest Hebrew writing that had ever been found, in a proto alphabetic script. “That predates biblical Hebrew, or paleo Hebrew, which is what we think of from the First Temple period, the earliest writings we had previously,” Stripling says. The inscription on the tablet included the name of Yahweh, the Hebrew name for God used in the Bible, twice. How to get you book published and become a New Your Times best selling author with New York Times best selling author Daven Michaels In His Words: I embarked on my first entrepreneurial endeavor at the tender age of 15 when I began designing clothing for local musicians. I don't know why I started so early, but I was immediately hooked. I had a knack for music industry fashion and, before long, I was designing clothing for some of the biggest bands of the 80s and 90s. As my enthusiasm for clothing design ebbed, I started looking for a new challenge. Again on a whim, I decided to start a communications company. It was completely from scratch. All I had was a telephone (landline of course!), and a desk with a chair. Despite those humble beginnings, I was able to expand my company into 60 different U.S. cities within 5 years. Buyout offers were flooding in, so I decided to sell the business to a public company in exchange for equity. Soon after, my new parent company was also bought out. I ended up with an impressive nest egg and an entire universe of opportunity. With my newfound financial freedom, I returned to my passion for music and entertainment. I actually became the biggest electronic music event producer in the U.S., throwing parties for 15,000 to 20,000 people a night. I rolled that success into a successful career as a recording artist… and then a much longer career as a music and television producer, again working with some of the biggest bands in the world. After the turn of the millennium, my entrepreneurial brain latched onto a tiny, but powerful idea. Always a fan of tech and innovation, I was inspired by the rise of online entrepreneurship. My vision was to use the internet to connect business owners with a global labor pool. So I founded 123Employee, an outsourcing company with work centers in the Philippines. We were able to offer an affordable, agile workforce to independent entrepreneurs and small business owners. 123Employee was technically a brick and mortar business, but I really wanted the freedom to pursue passion projects and travel the world. So I set up systems that would allow me to manage everything remotely. And even after I had 1,000 employees on the books across 3 continents, I was able to operate the entire business with just my laptop and cell phone from anywhere in the world. As I traveled more, and met other aspiring entrepreneurs around the world, I realized I had a passion for other small business owners and entrepreneurs reach their dreams as well. So I started public speaking and was soon sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in business. I wrote several books, including my biggest hit Outsource Smart which landed on multiple Best Seller lists including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, along with becoming an Amazon #1 Best Seller. I even founded an entire association (Virtual Entrepreneurs Association) dedicated to providing resources and support for entrepreneurs and small business owners at any stage of their careers. For the past 6+ years I have also been a Cryptopreneur & Investor. Digital assets and the innovations of Decentralized Finance (DeFi) are revolutionizing the way we use money, and I'm thrilled to be at the forefront. My currently Executive Chairman of CurrentC Group, a power provider to the Crypto Mining industry and Michaels Press, a US based, boutique Publishing House.

Psychoanalytic encounters are filled with the unknowability of two unconscious minds meeting. Here one may forge a link that enables the process of meaning-making, or else it can become the space for destruction, perversion, evacuation, regression, and stasis. The area that lies between the mind of the analyst and that of the analysand is thus the liminal area of psychoanalysis - of growth, change, turbulence, as well as that of impasse, bastion, and failure. This latter could be what Bion meant by minus links. It seems that the primitive part of the mind is always looking for ways to evade psychic pain and emotional truth is always in peril. Analytic links are always fraught with danger. Minus links share with each other the quality of evading truth and therefore inhibiting emotional growth and the capacity to give meaning to experiences. Blind spots may be enabled by analytic allegiance to our particular schools, our inability to forge a technique in the face of the protomental apparatus which can breed arrogance, the complacencies of language, gaps between our theoretical allegiance and our technique, and, finally, all too often, our unwillingness and inability to get in touch with our true experience. Would it help to chronicle our quotidian failures? In these liminal moments, the links between analyst and analysand slide away from the emotional truth, rather than towards it. In Plato's Ghost: Liminality and Psychoanalysis (Phoenix Publishing House, 2021), Nilofer Kaul presents these moments and explores the complex reasons behind them in a stunning debut work that questions the heart of analytic practice. Way back in August 2018, I was fortunate to spend a morning with the author of The Penderwicks, Jeanne Birdsall. It was a glorious morning, truly, and something surprising came of it. A little idea popped into my head, and it just sort of… rooted itself. Actually… the idea that popped into my head didn't […] Visit Read-Aloud Revival ® with Sarah Mackenzie
