Send us a textFor the past few centuries, we have philosophically operated under Newtonian physics where questions of experience and of the soul were seen as subjective, with no connection to the numerical certainty of science. However, then came quantum physics. In his new book, Light of the Mind, Light of the World: Illuminating Science Through Faith, classicist Dr. Spencer Klavan retells the history of science and highlights the philosophical implications of each era. He argues that quantum mechanics, with its exploration of uncertainty and consciousness, has not only returned physics to the question of the soul. But, also, has provided an incredible argument for the Genesis account of creation. You may recognize Dr. Klavan from his appearance in episode 104 - Modern Problems, Ancient Solutions - Applying the Wisdom of the Classics to the Cultural Conflicts of TodayTopics:The purpose of this bookMusic of the Spheres & the Medieval View of the world - the World as Beauty + OrderPhilosophical implications of "ghost in the machine" philosophyAI and the mechanical view of the universeGenesis, Consciousness, and Quantum MechanicsWorldviews and ScienceA clash of cultures: Scientism and Skepticism in AmericaConfusing spiritual truths and scientific truths"What books have had an impact on you?""What advice do you have for teenagers?"Bio:Dr. Spencer Klavan is an associate editor at the Claremont Review of Books and a podcaster on the great works of the West. Receiving and offering compassion are constant struggles. We often think we're being so compassionate, but what we're really saying is tantamount to, "snap out of it." In this sermon on Psalm 103, Pastor Dave explains how compassion can't be earned, how it is costly, and how it is easily forgotten.
We're all looking for justice, but it feels like a moving target. We want wrongs to be made right, but we're not sure how to do that. Psalm 129 tells us that our search for justice is not in vain or pointless. Pastor Dave dives into this passage and teaches us about the power of naming injustice, the tension with seeking justice, and the hope of ending injustice.

Even in the most advanced society, security is elusive and fleeting. In this sermon on Psalm 46, Pastor Dave teaches us why we lack security, where to find security, and finally, how to live with security from the its only true Source.
Hope is a necessity in life, and to have hope, we must first have meaning. We need to know that our life has significance and purpose. Pastor Brent teaches us that Psalm 8 tells us how to find this meaning by looking up, looking in, and looking out.
The concept of freedom is a hallmark of Bay Area culture. And yet, the freedom offered by the world always leaves the recipient wanting. In examining an excerpt of the longest Psalm, Pastor Brents teaches us the surprising path of freedom, why the path works, and how we can walk the path.
The human experience is marked by guilt, whether it's a low hum or a haunting. In this sermon on Psalm 51, Pastor Dave teaches us how to remove guilt biblically by examining the meaning of guilt, the power of confession, and the joy of salvation.
Brené Brown says that the most powerful words in the English language are "me too." The Psalms are full of people who are struggling and searching as we are. When you're going through a hard season, you want to be amongst people who have struggled as you have and come out the other side. One common struggle is anxiety, which has become the #1 mental health diagnosis in the USA. In this sermon, Pastor Brent teaches about the condition of anxiety, the causes or anxiety, and the cure for anxiety.
When you study the Psalms, you find kinship with writers who are also struggling and searching in various ways. Psalm 1 deals with our deepest search in life: the pursuit of happiness. We are all looking for happiness, but the problem is that very few of us seem to find it. Psalm 1 tells us a radical claim, a surprising key, and a supernatural power as a modern solution to the ancient problem of the pursuit of happiness.

Tom Bodrovics welcomes back once again, Dr. Stephen Leeb of Leeb Capital Management to discuss China's overall growth and the geopolitical impact. Leeb articulates his perspective that the recent slump in China's stocks has minimal effect on its general economy, albeit it may discourage some foreign investment. He argues that China's economic model takes a different approach, focusing largely on knowledge generation and innovation rather than relying heavily on financial markets. A Nature report indicates China surpassing the US in general scientific achievement for the first time, showing the country's advancements in technology. The report singles out China's long-term investment focus as the source of their success, drawing a parallel with Western countries' emphasis on short-term outcomes. Looking at the education backgrounds of top tech company heads, they are often originally from Asia, with examples illustrating that they have the capability to transform industries. A shift in corporate focus is observable, as evident with Microsoft's transition from PCs to the cloud. Yet, a clear concern is expressed regarding the growing disconnect between corporate heads and their employee base, possibly leading to classism issues. Dr. Leeb calls attention to the United States' current condition, making comparisons to China's technological advancement. He voices concerns about societal upheaval due to significant inequalities and a lack of unified mission, cautioning about events like the Civil War. Despite these issues, he remains optimistic, emphasizing the strength of American democratic values. Dr. Leeb explains his views on gold as a significant store of value over other assets. He challenges conventional financial wisdom with his argument that gold has proven to be a reliable safeguard during periods of instability, even though renowned financiers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett disagree. A worldwide crisis is stressed as money unduly influences science. International cooperation is suggested as the key for global progress. He emphasizes China's defensive strategy in conflicts as a model, and strongly advocates for gold as a spiritual value and balance to materialism. Despite a critique of systems like Bitcoin, he expresses hope that future generations will appreciate the balance offered by gold. Stephen Leeb is a financial author, wealth manager, and publisher of a family of investment newsletters. He has been a recurring guest on CNN, Fox News, NPR, Bloomberg, and many others through the years. Leeb was also said to be one of the country's foremost financial experts, with Charlie Gasparino in 2016 recommending Leeb as a good candidate for Federal Reserve Chairman. Leeb earned a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business. He also earned a Master's in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Illinois.
In the long-awaited (whoopsie!) second part of their Spotify series, the Demagogues explore what can be done to rebalance the music biome. What is this elusive context, and how does the indie artist create it for themselves? What is really happening with "good guy" distributors? What is Spotify doing wrong, and why? And what is the listener's role in this ecosystem? Sally puts on her finest podcast bro regalia and flexes her business nerd muscles (thank you, ketones), while Gabbie grounds the conversation with repartée the people are actually interested in. It is, all in all, their best episode yet...and they have no plans to ever be this good again. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Spotify has made some major changes to how they're paying artists in 2024, and people are pretty pissed about it. People, sure, but what about the Demagogues? Gabbie admits to being a total fraud who actually knows nothing about the music industry, then blithely demands that Sally explain everything to her. What are royalties, even? Does every artist deserve to have them? Are the changes to the payment model as bad as everyone says they are? Plus, Sally channels her inner bootstrap-puller in some harsh (yet loving) advice to indie musicians everywhere. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Modern science has truly come a long way with regards to fertility and alternative ways to start families. However, even with these science-aided options like surrogacy and egg freezing/IVF, women are still forced to think about their options with regard to whether or not they want to have children when they are in their mid 20s to mid 30s. Since Angela is in this age range currently and has many friends who have either already had kids or have gone through science-aided options, this topic is very top of mind for her - hence, this episode! We discuss what we think about surrogacy and egg freezing, our personal and friends' experiences with these options, and also the unnecessary taboos and judgments people have around these alternatives and the ways that parents choose to go about their lives before and after a child's birth (i.e., going back to work vs. being a stay at home parent). Are you already a parent or thinking of having children in the near future? What has society tried to shame you for about this process? Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks to Spencer Klavan, host of “The Young Heretics,” about his new book, “How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises”; how the problems that we face as a modern society are not all that different from the problems humanity has always faced; how the great books of Western literature provide more valuable insights into the crises of Western civilization than most modern-day gurus do; how to save Western culture; the most valuable lessons we can learn from classical literature; and much more.
