I'm sure that my first introduction to Robin Hood was Disney's charming fox. It's honestly a pretty faithful telling of the myth, (maybe even more so because of all the talking animals). But in the Year of our Lord 1991, when I was a mere second grader, there was just one Robin Hood: Kevin Costner as the Prince of Thieves. We were not a movie-going family, but the theaters advertised their hopeful blockbusters on broadcast television, and they really sold this one. The trailer ended with a shot from the point of view of an arrow racing through the forest to split another and claim the bullseye. Pull back and behold the shooter: The Field of Dreams and Dances with Wolves guy! WHAT!?!? I had to see it. I actually did watch it eventually on VHS at Preston Jones' house with the GIANT 36 INCH TV. I became obsessive, begging my parents for a real bow and arrow that I would absolutely not shoot my sisters with (denied). But the thing that sticks with me still is the killer ballad featured over the end credits. “Everything I Do, (I Do It for You)” by Bryan Adams forever changed couples' skating and slow dancing in Cordova, Tennessee and probably across the whole dang world. I didn't know it then, but these compelling twins of honor in romance and warfare were interwoven as the DNA of the genre that birthed the very first tales of Robin Locksley. This was a chivalric romance, and I was hooked. I think this is connected to how much I love the stories of King David and his Mighty Men. No doubt the setting and cultural dynamics are hundreds of miles and centuries apart. But for me the common themes trigger all the trappings of a good medieval adventure. A noble warrior and rightful heir becomes an outcast in his own country because of the oppression of an unjust authority. In his exile, he finds the love of the people is on his side, and the most formidable of these band together to see him installed in his rightful place, where he can best care for the poor. Only the return of the High King, (who knows when?), will end this conflict. Until then, the most tragic episodes will occur inside the camp. What's not to love? This week we're really going to dial in on the band of merry mighty men and how their friendship to David becomes an indispensable part of his ascent. It's a model for our own friendships for those who have ears to hear. Looking forward to it.

In part 1 of this series on Building a Team, host Dan Lesniak described the process and steps of when and how to go from being a solo agent to bringing on support. In part 2, he walked us through the steps of going from how do “I Do It” to how do “We Do It.” Now, in part 3, he teaches us how members of a team go from doing it with your support to doing it with your help. This is where leadership comes into play. In part 3, you are likely going to need to hire a COO (either from within or bringing in a new member onto your team), someone who can run the operations of the company. You are also going to have to start getting into a weekly cadence with meetings to review your dashboard items and track your leading indicators. Building a system to track all your leads, appointments, showings, listings, and contracts will help you to take action before it's too late. Leading a team is really staying on top of everything so you can better adapt no matter what the market does. Join Host Dan Lesniak as he discusses… ∙ Making a transition to building a larger team, with at least 10 agents, admin support, and hiring a COO. ∙ The importance of getting into a weekly cadence with meetings. ∙ Why tracking everything from appointments to contracts will help you learn what's working and what isn't. ∙ How building leadership will help you better manage your team and take action before it's too late. Greetings and Happy New Year! My wish for all of you in 2023 is that you experience lots of love and laughter, that a long-held dream becomes a reality, that you experience the discomfort of growth, and that you are able to look yourself in the mirror at the end of each day and honestly say “I did my very best today.” And when that “very best” isn't up to your usual standards – you give yourself a break and love yourself anyway. Let me start by saying I'm a planning geek. Goals and strategies excite me, and I love realizing the aggressive goals I set for myself. Today, I'm inviting you to pick an area of your professional life that you would like to see massive change in. Step 1 – Choose the general area Some possibilities: -Get a promotion -Get a substantial raise -Get a new job -Get a new certification -Complete a degree -Learn how to _____ -Get better at _____ -Stop _____ -Develop a better relationship with _____ -Win _____ award -Become a subject matter expert in _____ -Write an article for _____ publication Of course, there are many more possibilities than these, but hopefully this gets your brain moving. Step 2 – Set a SMART goal As a review, SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Sensitive. Let's do a few examples. If your area is to get a substantial raise, your SMART goal might be: -Ask boss for 20% raise at my performance evaluation in June. Specific: 20%Measurable: Did I, or did I not, ask?Achievable: I can absolutely make this askRealistic: Based on my salary and the market rate for what I do, a 20% raise is very realisticTime-Sensitive: I already have my performance review scheduled for June 19th; that's when I will ask. Here's another example: If your area is to get better at delegating, your SMART goal might be: -Delegate the annual report copyrighting to Dana and the QA for the annual report to James, which is due on 3/01/2023. Specific: Delegate the annual report copyrighting and QAMeasurable: Did I just supervise, rather than work hands on – yes or no?Achievable: Dana and James are both fully capable of doing this work and would enjoy the challenge.Realistic: It makes sense for Dana and James to be involved in this project for their professional development.Time-Sensitive: Project is due 3/01/2023 Step 3 - Write down all the ways this WON'T work. Going back to the example of asking for a raise: -I'll be too nervous to ask -My boss might get mad -My boss might fire me for asking -My boss will tell me I don't deserve that much more money -My boss will laugh at me -My boss will counter with a much lower raise -My boss will tell me that it isn't possible to give me that much In the example of delegating the annual report: -Dana or James might refuse -Dana or James might not do a good job -I may spend more time supervising them than if I did it myself -I might end up having to do it all over again at the last minute -Dana or James might leave before the project is due, and I'll be left picking up the pieces -Others on the team may be jealous of Dana or James because they got this important assignment Step 4 - Use your list of problems to come up with action steps to solve. Going back to the example of asking for a raise: -I'll be too nervous to ask – I will practice with my significant other or friend -My boss might get mad – I can't control how my boss reacts, but I will deliver my request as politely and respectfully as I can while standing up for myself -My boss might fire me for asking - I can't control how my boss reacts, but I will deliver my request as politely and respectfully as I can while standing up for myself -My boss will tell me I don't deserve that much more money – I will have data to back up my request -My boss will laugh at me – I won't make this mean anything about me -My boss will counter with a much lower raise – I will practice how to counteroffer -My boss will tell me that it isn't possible to give me that much – I will have examples prepared that refute this if my boss brings it up What if your goal is more long-term? If, for example, your area is to become a better leader, your goal might be: Attend 3 leadership seminars/events in 2023. The problems and solutions might be: -I don't know where to find the best events – I'll mark off time on my calendar in January to research upcoming events and vet them out -My boss might not want me gone that much – I'll speak with him and get his support to attend -I don't know if my company will pay for that much training in one year – I'll check with my boss on this; I'll pay out of pocket if I need to -I can't take that much time off work – I will identify a 2nd in command for my function to be in control when I'm out; I will train that person prior to the first training I attend Step 5 - Calendar in your steps to success If you need to research trainings, books to read, or how to set something up, block out times to do so. Give yourself sufficient time to complete the task – not too much or so little that you become frustrated. If you plan to return to school, block out time to attend classes, study, etc. If you want to improve a working relationship, schedule lunches or other out-of-office time with that person. Step 6 - Choose an accountability partner – carefully I love mastermind groups for this purpose, because I know that in two weeks, they will ask if I did what I said I was going to do. Step 7 - Check in on your progress at least weekly Create a system to keep track of what you've done and what you still need to do relative to your goal. Anything from notes in your calendar to an Excel spreadsheet to a formal project management tool will do the trick, as long as it is a) easy for you to use, b) accessible to you. Part of checking in is making mid-course corrections. Is there a new step you need to introduce into your process? Has the goal changed slightly as you have progressed? Do you need to adjust your timeline (ideally due to circumstances outside your control). Step 8 - Celebrate the win This is the fun part – and the part so many people forget. This is your opportunity to give yourself a pat on the back, recognize the people who helped you achieve the win, and reflect on how you grew in achieving the goal. What if you weren't successful? Then celebrate the growth and learning. Remember my saying: It isn't winning or losing, it's winning or learning. If you weren't successful, do you want to go for the goal again? Are you satisfied with the movement you did have – and are ready to move on to a new goal? Step 9 - Use the momentum to choose another goal One of the major benefits of setting, and achieving, goals is how you improve your relationship with yourself in doing so. You are learning to have your own back – “when I say I'm going to do something, I DO IT.” Leverage that improved relationship to select another goal right after you've had a moment to stop and enjoy the view from your previous goal. One final note: I recommend starting with something small, if goal setting and goal-achieving is a new concept for you. You're building muscle around your ability to do what you say you are going to do, so don't try to life a 250 lb. dead weight right off the bat. Are you in the wrong job that chips away at you every day? The CareerSpring document and coaching program will help you find a job that uses your zone of genius, recognizes your value, and pays you what you're worth. If All You Did Today Was This… In our last couple +1s, we talked about my Top 3 Work targets and then we talked about my #1 Target: “Recommitting to my Sacred Vow.” As you may recall, these are my Top 3 Heroic Work Targets: I. Recommit to Sacred Vow (101 | 1M | 51 2051) II. #1 WIN III. Shut-down Complete Which begs the question… What are YOUR Top 3 Work Targets? I. ______________________ II. _____________________ III. _____________________ Quick check in… Have you taken a moment or three to reflect on that? If not, why not? Seriously… We're trying to move from Theory to Practice to Mastery, Hero!! Let's GOOO!!! Now… Today I want to chat about my #2 Heroic Work Target. Right after I reread and recommit to my Sacred Vow and BEFORE I allow ANY inputs into my life (no email, no smartphone, no inputs yet!), I decide what THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is that I'm going to do that day and then… I DO IT. And… As I like to say, if that was all I did that day but I did that EVERY DAY, I'd still be more effective and more productive than I was before I made this a non-negotiable habit. Now, of course, if you feel so inspired, we want to combine this AM Work practice with a good “Shut-down complete!” protocol (my #3 Work Target which is the subject of our next +1!) and all the Energy stuff that helps us show up for that WIN feeling ZESTY. Do that consistently and let's see if we can astonish yourself (and the world) with both the quantity AND the quality of your creative output. But… Don't just hit that “#1 WIN” Target once during the day. Discipline yourself to CONSTANTLY focus on WHAT'S IMPORTANT NOW! All day. Every day. ESPECIALLY… Today. Target swipe: “#1 WIN!” Target swipe: “#1 WIN!” Target swipe: “#1 WIN!”
What Are YOURS? Not too long ago, we talked about my Top 3 Energy Targets. As you may recall, I said that it's really hard to have a series of really bad days when I hit my Top 3 Energy Targets. These are my Top 3 Energy Targets: I. In Bed for 9-10 Hours II. AM Meditation (1%) III. Movement (30 Min) (What are YOURS?) Today I want to chat about my Top 3 Work Targets. Here they are: I. Recommit to Sacred Vow (101 | 1M | 51 2051) II. #1 WIN III. Shutdown Complete Note: If ALL I did in any given day was hit THOSE three Targets, I'd have a pretty good day. Period. I repeat: The early research on hitting as few as three Targets on our Heroic app shows that you can boost your Energy by 40%, your Productivity by 20% and your Connection by 15%. And, I repeat with even more emphasis: The extensive research on “checklists” in general is unequivocal: Checklists work. Whether we're talking about pilots or surgeons or athletes or construction managers or aspiring Heroes, checklists help you perform at your highest possible levels. Period. Now… Back to my personal checklists while YOU think about the Top 3 Work behaviors that keep YOU plugged in and showing up at your Heroic best. I. Recommit to Sacred Vow (101 | 1M | 51 2051) First, I recommit to my Sacred Vow to do my absolute best to serve you so we can fulfill our mission. I commit to getting my Soul Force to 101 so we can help 1M of us do the same so we can help create a world in which 51% of humanity is flourishing by 2051. II. #1 WIN Second, I commit to doing what I've decided is THE most important thing I can do that day is (my “#1 WIN”) and then I DO IT. III. Shutdown Complete Third, I decide when I am going to STOP working then, at the end of my day, I hit that “Shutdown complete” Target so I can transition from Work to Love as I spend time with the family and train my recovery so I can go hit it all again with Heroic Energy tomorrow. I will repeat yet again… It's REALLY (!) hard to have a series of bad days when I hit those three simple targets. Which is precisely why I use the Heroic app to recommit to those Targets every.single.morning and then strive to hit those Targets every.single.day. And… We just talked about me way too much. Today's +1 has NOTHING to do with me. It's all about YOU. What are YOUR Top 3 Work Targets? What are the three simple things you do when you're at your best Work-wise? Seriously. WHAT ARE THEY?! I. ______________________ II. _____________________ III. _____________________ Fantastic. Clarity is Step #1. Now… Is TODAY a good day to commit to and then hit those targets, Hero? Awesome. Day 1. All in. Let's go.

In today's episode of Raising Adults, we head into the second part of our three-week series. Last week we covered the "IDo It" phase of parenting, and today we are talking about the "We Do It" phase. This 5-10 age range is where we truly begin balancing responsibilities with privileges and move into a more collaborative part of the parenting journey. "You know what's really cool about this phase, honestly... The "We Do It" phase is where you're together and you're a team. And so the pressure of "I Do It" comes off of you a little bit, but you haven't worked yourself out of a job yet." - Kira Dorrian "This season is when you are collaboratively working toward things like growing responsibility, growing privileges and growing relational skills. This sets up not only raising your adult but how that adult then views their relationship with you." – Deana Thayer Today's discussion includes: A recap of the "I Do It" phase (00:57) Laying the groundwork and reaping the benefits (6:46) The "We Do It" phase (8:18) Setting the tone for the parent/child relationship (12:51) Consistency and communication (16:03) Kira outlines how she balances chores and privileges (17:23) Deana shares how she tackled this phase and her "yes posture" (20:27) How to handle changes in the parent-child relationship (24:56) Thanks for joining us on today's episode of Raising Adults! Niall Scott never enjoyed working for others. Jumping from job to job, he realised that working for himself was the only solution for him but didn’t quite know how to get started. When his father passed away, Niall reevaluated everything and started to think about the bigger picture. First, he invested in himself, in his mindset and then subsequently has invested in property building a portfolio of next level co-living spaces for working professionals and is now focused on social housing. KEY TAKEAWAY “Don't beat yourself up when things go wrong. If things go wrong, it's all part of the process so don't let that stop you. Like the title of the podcast, focus on the why. If things go wrong, just go back to basics and reevaluate everything, learn from those mistakes and just start again.
