In this episode— a 591 dam pressure ridge pressing down on the Mid-South, a nearly simultaneous Arctic outbreak in Alaska, triple-digit readings at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, a restless tropical Gulf, and heat in Iran that is pushing the boundaries of human survivability [1]. This is the kind of week that makes weather enthusiasts lean forward [1].What You'll LearnHow to read a pressure ridge — what 500 mb heights like 588, 591, and 594 dam actually mean for surface temperatures, and why meteorologists treat these thresholds as mental benchmarks rather than hard rules [2].Why Fairbanks and Big Bend are living in different seasons simultaneously — a 505 dam Arctic low is dropping late-season snow in the Brooks Range while Rio Grande Village, TX hits 110–111°F [2].The Bermuda High's role in Mid-Atlantic heat — how a semi-permanent subtropical high is funneling heat and humidity toward Baltimore, Washington, and the I-95 corridor [2].Two major models agree on Gulf tropical development — what GFS and ECMWF are showing and why it matters even before any tropical cyclone forms [3].The global heat context — India and Pakistan surpassing 46°C, Houston heat indices in the mid-to-upper 100s, and Shushtar, Iran forecast to reach 127°F on June 14, with AccuWeather confirming dangerous multi-day extreme heat [3]. The University of Sydney's 35°C wet-bulb threshold for human survivability is not a distant theoretical concern this week [3].The humidity divide — Dubai's suffocating 65–71°F dewpoints versus Phoenix's 20–30°F dewpoints, and why that difference matters more than raw temperature when assessing heat danger [3].Listener City Forecasts CoveredChicago, St. Louis, Lakewood NJ, Baltimore, New York City, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Atlanta [4].International Cities FeaturedTel Aviv, Dubai, and Shushtar, Iran [4].Voice Cast- AIBrian — lead male voice [4]Sarah — female voice [5]Adam — male voice [5]Rachel — female voice [5]Matilda — female voice [5]Weather With Enthusiasm uses a multi-voice AI-assisted format for select episodes. This week on the Carolina Weather Group, we are joined by David Bilstrom, a volunteer reporter for the WatchDuty app. David explains how the free app uses collaboration and various data signals to monitor wildfires, relay evacuation notices, and track firefighting aircraft in real time. He also shares his insights on building "Firewise" homes and reacts to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety's wind-driven fire experiment. Also in this episode:The Drought & The Deluge: We review recent heavy rainfall across the Carolinas, including some staggering totals of up to 12.7 inches near Lake Murray. While the rain was beneficial to the region, it did not entirely end the ongoing drought. Charlotte's Radar Gap: We dive into the frustration race fans experienced during the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway when rain disrupted the event despite barely showing up on radar. This phenomenon was caused by precipitation falling below the radar beam from the 88D, which sits over 5,000 feet high. Weekend Forecast: Panelist Frank Strait shares the upcoming forecast, highlighting a cold front that will bring cooler, less humid air to North Carolina by Friday. Hurricane Season & Tropics: The panel discusses NOAA's outlook for an average or slightly below-average hurricane season, while cautioning that "it only takes one" major storm to make it a bad year. Frank also addresses the GFS model's hints at early June tropical development. Too Many Tabs: We explore new moving traffic cameras available on DriveNC.gov, review ongoing I-40 repairs from Helene, and discuss ways the public can provide feedback on NOAA Weather Radio and the COOP observer network. Join us next week when we talk to the Storm Prediction Center about their new severe weather intensity categories!

Laura Donefer is known for artwork that pushes boundaries by exploring memory, assault, bereavement, joy and madness. Celebrated for her innovative, colorful blown glass and flameworked Amulet Baskets, the artist has been using glass as the primary medium in her work for over 40 years, all while teaching, promoting the glass arts worldwide, and producing her unforgettable Glass Fashion Show (GFS). Donefer has produced 15 of her extraordinary fashion shows, many for the Glass Art Society (GAS). In fact, at GAS Murano 2018, her remarkable and ground-breaking event included 33 glass costumes worn by models as they glided past thrilled onlookers through the canals of Murano, Italy. Award-winning documentary filmmaker David Marshall of Blue Sky Projects Films has undertaken a years-long documentary project dedicated to capturing both the history of Donefer's GFS and the work artists are undertaking to present a captivating and memorable show at GAS's June 2026 conference to be held at the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York. Writes Donefer's assistant and GFS participating artist, Jennifer Hand: "Ten years ago this June, Rik Allen stepped onto a catwalk at the Corning Museum of Glass in a full astronaut getup accompanied by David Bowie's Major Tom and changed my life forever. I found my community in the rapturous throng of creative, compassionate and collaborative humanity who cheered alongside me that night: Die-hard lovers of glass art united by the magnificent spectacle of Laura Donefer's Glass Fashion Show. It was my first Glass Art Society conference, and though the days before the grand finale had been filled with inspiring content and exciting connections, nothing could have prepared me for the cascading emotions I felt witnessing the wild, weird wonder of the artists who had spent years creating costumes for this one-night-only performance. It would have been inconceivable to me at the time, but two short springs later, I danced in my own glass costume on Murano's grand canal to an equally exuberant crowd. It may be challenging for those who have not had the pleasure of attending one of these happenings to fully appreciate their splendor, but for prior participants and audience members alike, the verdict is unanimous - there is nothing on earth like the GFS. Since Donefer hosted the inaugural show at the first Canadian GAS Conference in 1989, she has traveled around the world putting on versions of the event - including several at Corning, Toledo and Toronto, and one particularly raunchy romp in New Orleans. AACG member Beth Hylen, who has been in every glass fashion show except the first, credits the events with transforming her from a quiet librarian to a glassy diva. Hylen describes that experience as a "dream," saying, 'Strutting on the stage is so much fun. The energy behind the scenes is electric, and Laura encourages us to energize our performance on stage. I love working for months creating weird and wonderful wearable glass, and there's nothing like watching the artists who put so much time to create their creations seeing it all come together.' An evening of transcendent beauty is arguably an end goal in itself, but the GFS has impacts far beyond the moment when the last bow has been taken and the last shard of glass swept from the stage. In the years leading up to each fashion show, Donefer provides her encouragement, advice and mentorship to each participant, building a sense of community and modeling her style of unapologetically ebullient leadership to each new generation of GFS artists. GFS veterans seeing each other in the wild at glass world events have a unique bond, and, if we're being fair, an almost evangelical zeal to lure outsiders into the fandom. Neither Donefer nor the models and artists for the performance are compensated for their time, materials or travel to participate - they work their glassy magic into exquisite wearable art out of sheer love of the community and the desire to make the audience gasp in astonished joy.. When Donefer delivers lectures on the history of the Glass Fashion Show, she shares a multitude of stories from her decades leading this singular aspect of the glass field - friendships made, injuries narrowly avoided, and institutional boundaries skirted. Profound storyteller that she is, her lectures are equal parts entertaining and educational, but alone they cannot tell the full story of this cultural phenomenon. Recognizing the magnitude of Donefer's contribution to the trajectory of the glass community, award-winning film maker David Marshall of Blue Sky Projects Films has undertaken a years-long documentary project dedicated to capturing… the Glass Fashion Show… Marshall has begun filming interviews with Donefer and her participating artists, including teams from Murano, Hilltop Artists in Tacoma and Project Fire in Chicago. Film crews will also be on hand in Corning this June to do cinematic justice to the detail and exquisite skilling of this year's costumes, which have been mandated by Donefer to be the most extravagant ever - headpieces, footwear, and head-to-toe glass on every model. Between the passion and labor of the artists and Marshall's thoughtful filmmaking, the documentary will properly honor and record the unparalleled contributions Donefer has made to glass history." Enjoy this podcast conversation with Donefer, Hand, and participating artists Susan Bloch and Hylen, about their memories of and contributions to the Glass Fashion Show. #863 Five friends, fresh out of high school, pooled their savings, stayed up until 5 AM prepping food, and on their very first night selling tacos, sold out in under 90 minutes — here's exactly how they did it! In this episode, host Brien Gearin sits down with Matthew Berda, co-founder of Ponchos Tacos, a seasonal mobile taco business based in Richmond, BC. Matthew shares how he and four friends pooled their savings right out of high school to launch a food stand at the Richmond Night Market — North America's largest night market — and sold out within their first 90 minutes. Now in their fourth year, the business has grown from a single tent to a multi-trailer operation pulling in multiple six figures over just a few months each summer. Matthew breaks down startup costs ($25–40K), food sourcing through distributors like GFS and Sysco, navigating health permits and business licenses, keeping food costs around 30%, and using Square for point of sale. He also touches on their Instagram and TikTok marketing strategy, private catering events, and managing a lean team across multiple locations on a single weekend! What we discuss with Matthew: + Sold out in 90 minutes on night one + $25–40K startup costs + 30% food cost target + Sourcing through GFS, Sysco, and Costco + Health permits and food safety plans + Square for cash and card payments + Instagram and TikTok for marketing + Scaling from one tent to multiple trailers + Private catering alongside public markets + Friends as a flexible, low-cost labor pool Thank you, Matthew! WindBorne Systems is transforming global weather forecasting by deploying long-duration weather balloons that fly for weeks instead of hours. What began as a Stanford Student Space Initiative project has scaled to 100 balloons aloft simultaneously, targeting 500 by end of next year, with an end goal of 10,000 balloons monitoring Earth's atmosphere. In this episode of BUILDERS, I sat down with John Dean, Co-Founder and CEO of WindBorne Systems, to explore how the company secured its first government contract in under three years without lobbyists, achieved 4x annual manufacturing growth, and built Weather Mesh—an AI weather model that outperforms competitors from Google DeepMind. Topics Discussed: The technical evolution from Stanford project to operational constellation of altitude-controlled balloons Strategic decision to pursue government revenue before building B2B forecasting products Navigating Defense Innovation Unit and Air Force Lifecycle Management Center procurement as a founder Timeline from founding to first grants (within six months) and first data delivery contract (two and a half years) Current roughly 50/50 revenue split between civilian agencies (NOAA, international weather services) and Department of Defense Building Weather Mesh after Huawei's Pangu Weather validated end-to-end AI forecasting viability Transitioning from founder-led sales by promoting a Palantir hire from proposal writer to public sector growth leader The 30-year vision of millions of fingernail-sized atmospheric sensors creating a planetary nervous system GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Study the bureaucracy's incentive structures before pitching product value: John spent years mapping how government procurement actually works rather than leading with product capabilities. The critical insight: in DoD sales, the warfighter (end user) doesn't control purchasing decisions. Success requires understanding each stakeholder's specific mandate and aligning your solution to their organizational incentives, not just operational needs. For civilian agencies like NOAA, the dynamics differ entirely. Founders entering govtech should invest 6-12 months learning procurement mechanics before expecting revenue. Use government contracts as non-dilutive scaling capital for hardware businesses: WindBorne secured SBIR grants within six months, then landed their first Air Force data delivery contract through Defense Innovation Unit at the two-and-a-half-year mark. John explicitly treated early grants as equivalent to venture funding but without equity dilution. For companies building physical infrastructure at scale (satellites, hardware networks, manufacturing operations), government contracts provide the runway to reach technical milestones that unlock larger B2B opportunities. This sequencing—government funding first, then B2B products built on that foundation—proves more capital-efficient than attempting to raise massive venture rounds upfront for unproven hardware. Integrate with legacy systems rather than attempting wholesale replacement: WindBorne doesn't aim to replace the 1,000 radiosondes launched daily worldwide—they're expanding coverage from the current 15% of Earth (where humans can launch traditional balloons) to 100%. The hardware is revolutionary (weeks of flight versus two hours), but the go-to-market integrates into existing weather agency workflows and feeds into established models like GFS and ECMWF. This approach accelerated adoption because agencies could add WindBorne data without overhauling their entire forecasting infrastructure. The displacement of radiosondes becomes economically inevitable long-term, but only after proving the system at scale. Move fast once adjacent technology validates your thesis: WindBorne wasn't investing in AI-based weather forecasting until Huawei's Pangu Weather paper demonstrated that end-to-end neural weather models could compete with physics-based simulations. Once that validation appeared, John's team moved immediately—adopting the open architecture and expanding it into Weather Mesh before the approach became widely adopted. The lesson isn't to wait for competitors, but to monitor adjacent technological developments and move decisively when validation emerges. They built a top-performing model by being early to a proven approach, not first to an unproven one. Hire for mid-level roles and promote based on demonstrated judgment: John hired Dana from Palantir as a proposal writer, not as a sales executive. He watched her demonstrate strong opinions that consistently proved correct, then promoted her to build and lead the entire public sector growth organization. This internal promotion model worked better than external executive hires because the person already understood WindBorne's technology, customers, and internal culture. For specialized domains like government sales, bringing in experienced operators at individual contributor levels and promoting them as they prove their judgment builds more effective organizations than hiring executives to parachute in. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. It is the question everyone is asking: Is it finally going to snow in the Carolinas? On this week's edition of the Carolina Weather Group, James Brierson and Meteorologist Frank Strait break down the complicated signal for potential winter weather this weekend. We start with the bitter cold arriving Thursday and Friday, bringing dangerous wind chills and school delays to Western North Carolina. Then, we dive deep into the computer models to see if a developing system on Sunday will bring snow to the Piedmont or just cold rain. Frank explains why the GFS is bullish on snow while the European and Canadian models disagree, and teaches us how to use "ensembles" to cut through social media hype.Plus, we cover breaking space news regarding the first-ever medical evacuation from the International Space Station and track the Buddhist monks' "Walk for Peace" moving through Charlotte.Support the Show: Get your Carolina Weather Group Beanie or Fleece to stay warm during this cold snap! https://carolinaweathergroup.qbstores.com/#weather #northcarolina #southcarolina #ncwx #scwx #podcast

Remember how, before Hurricane Michael, when the storm season came around we only gave it our mild interest. Post-Michael, I haven't yet met someone who doesn't follow Mike's Spaghetti models with grave intentionality between June and November. Experience and expectation really goes a long way in shaping our responses to the warnings we get from NOAA.As we continue our study in Matthew this week we'll be reading chapter 3. We're going to be introduced to a human GFS model – John the Baptist, who will be announcing the arrival of the Messiah and the launch of God's kingdom invasion. As you read John's message, what does his major theme seem to be? What is he calling people to do? What do you think his instructions meant to a Jewish person living in the first century? What does that mean to us, as 21st Century Americans? What sort of radical changes have taken place in your life as a result of embracing the Good News of Jesus? The Pharisees and Sadducees show up too, and John doesn't give them the greeting they are accustomed to. What does he seem to highlight as the problem with these religious leaders? Why does he call them “the offspring of snakes”? Thinking back through the Biblical narrative, do you remember a forecast of “the offspring of the serpent” bruising someone's heel? There's going to be a lot to unpack in this section that I'm really excited about! When Jesus shows up he does something that surprises everyone, including John. He gets in line for his turn to be baptized. John is nonplussed. “You're the Messiah, come to save us from sin…I need to be baptized by you…what do YOU need to repent of?” It's a puzzling scene to this day. Jesus said he needed to do it to, in the Greek, “fulfill all righteousness”. In other words – the righteousness, the setting things right that God intends comes through a Messiah who stands in the river with humanity, identifying with them, protecting them in their corrupted, vulnerable state. What does this tell us about what it means to “fulfill righteousness”?I'm so stoked to dig into this text – Hope to see you Sunday!Click here to view a pdf of the teaching slideshow.

The legislation would clarify SAF eligibility in the USDA's current bioenergy programs and expand markets for crops used in SAF production. It would also clarify the federal definition of SAF for USDA purposes and promote more collaboration on aviation biofuels within the USDA. Six senators from the Midwest reintroduced the bill. Agriculture, aviation, and energy groups have all expressed support for the legislation. The reintroduction came one day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order freezing any new federal rules for 60 days, including the 45Z tax credit guidance.USDA reported a flash sale of corn on Wednesday. US exporters sold 136,000mt (5mil bushels) of corn to unknown destinations for delivery during the 2024/2025 marketing year. Current marketing year corn sales are the third best in the last ten years.China has suspended Brazilian soybean shipments from five companies. China's General Administration of Customs halted the shipments after finding pesticides and pests during a routine inspection. Authorities did not release the number of cargoes or the volume of soybeans affected by the suspension. However, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture reported that the ban is not expected to affect Brazil's overall soybean exports to China. The ministry is expected to provide China with the necessary information to lift the temporary suspensions. The firms included in the ban are some of the largest soybean suppliers to China.Weather forecasts for southern Brazil and Argentina have turned slightly wetter. Rains are slated to return to southern Brazil and northern Argentina by Sunday. Southern Brazil, in particular, should see widespread coverage during the next 5 days. The 5-10 day period introduces slightly better rainfall for key Argentina soybean areas. This morning's extended GFS model, however, is again drier for much of Argentina's soybean country. Despite the rain, parts of Argentina, including Buenos Aires, may remain drier than normal.President Donald Trump is pressuring Russia to negotiate an end to the war with Ukraine. On Wednesday, Trump said that Russia needs to make a deal to end the war, or the US will impose tariffs, higher taxes, and sanctions on Russian imports. The same would apply to other countries providing financial support to Russia. It's unclear which specific Russian goods would be targeted, but Russia's main oil producers could be included. Tariffs, however, won't be overly impactful given that the US only imported about $4.6 billion worth of Russian goods in 2023, accounting for only 0.2% of total imports.President Donald Trump's nominee for Agriculture Secretary previously opposed ethanol and farm subsidies. Brooke Rollins served as president and CEO of the Texas Public Policy Foundation from 2003 to 2018. During that time, the organization claimed that government support for ethanol led to an increase in emissions and a rise in food and fuel prices. In 2016, while Rollins remained in her position with the nonprofit, the group advocated for the elimination of farm subsidies. Despite Rollins' controversial history on policies affecting farmers, more than 400 state and national agricultural groups endorsed her to lead the USDA.

They believe that China would retaliate with its own tariffs on US grains and oilseeds if President-elect Donald Trump proceeds with his aggressive tariff plan. This could give Brazil an even stronger position in the Chinese market, as they would likely benefit from reduced US soybean exports. Trump Denies Softening Stance on TariffsPresident-elect Trump denied claims that he might adopt a softer approach to tariffs. On Monday, Trump dismissed a Washington Post article suggesting that his tariff plan might focus only on sectors critical to national security. This would have been a significant shift from the tariffs he promised during his presidential campaign.Funds Increase Net-Long Position in CornThe Funds have substantially increased their net-long position in corn futures. According to CFTC's weekly Commitment of Traders data, as of Tuesday, December 31, large money managers were net buyers of 58,000 corn contracts. Funds were also net buyers of 29,000 soybean contracts and 12,000 SRW wheat contracts during the week.Weather Relief for Brazil and ArgentinaExtended weather forecasts provide some relief for portions of southern Brazil and northern Argentina, which have been experiencing dry conditions. Both the Euro and GFS models agree that these regions will remain mostly dry through the next 10 days. However, rain chances are expected to return during the 10-16 day period, with some normal rainfall possible between 15-28 days. This has impacted soybean meal futures, which closed lower on Monday and continued trading lower early this morning.US Export Shipments in Line with ExpectationsUS corn shipments were in line with expectations last week, with 847,463 metric tons (33 million bushels) inspected for export. However, this was 6.6% lower compared to the previous week and 22% below the same week last year. Soybean shipments came in at 1.3 million metric tons (47 million bushels), down 22% from the prior week but up 23% compared to last year. Wheat shipments exceeded expectations at 412,342 metric tons (15 million bushels), up 22% from the previous week but down 18% from last year.First US Human Fatality from Bird Flu ConfirmedThe US has confirmed its first human fatality from bird flu, a case involving an individual with underlying health conditions over the age of 65 in Louisiana.
