Go buy it and listen to the shit out of it. David is rad and we unpack many of the musical projects he has been a part of. We actually barely scratch the surface, the man has done so much. But at least we go into as much detail as we can cram into an hour. Hope you enjoy it. https://www.dragcity.com/products/ballads-of-harry-houdini https://www.instagram.com/cestcadavidpajo/

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a reunion of sorts, in celebration of a new release of old music: It's David Pajo, Cassie Berman, and Tim Furnish. These three met in the fertile Louisville scene of the early 1990s. Pajo played guitar in the wildly influential band Slint and went on to play with Tortoise, Royal Trux, Stereolab, and Interpol at various times over the years—he's currently a member of Gang Of Four. But the subject of this conversation is Pajo's sorta-solo career, which went through various M-names, from just M to Papa M and Aerial M. As Aerial M, Pajo brought on some friends for a brief time to tour Europe, where they recorded a Peel Session—more on that in a minute. The friends that Pajo recruited to play in the Aerial M live band were Tim Furnish, whose legendary Louisville band Crain had broken up recently—and who has since recorded experimental rock with the band Parlour—as well as Cassie Berman and Tony Bailey. Berman had been kicking around in Louisville bands, too, and she would go on to join Silver Jews, the band fronted by her husband, David Berman. Drummer Tony Bailey, as you'll hear, played in about a million bands in the area—he died, sadly, in 2009. The reason for today's reunion of the lineup that burned bright but quick is the release of Aerial M's new Peel Sessions album. In case you're unfamiliar, BBC DJ John Peel used to invite the coolest bands of his day—from the ‘70s into the 2000s—to record a few songs specifically for his show, many of which were later released with the same striking artwork. In 1998, Aerial M stopped by and recorded three songs that would turn out quite different to the versions Pajo crafted in the studio, and would really be the only evidence that this lineup left of its existence. Pajo was recently reminded of this session, so he set about tracking down the tapes, sprucing them up, and handing them over to Drag City for a proper release—including an amazing replica of those original John Peel Sessions sleeves. Check out the song “Vivea” right here. I don't think these three had sat down for a chat in a while, so it's like sitting in on a reunion with three people who have a lot of fond memories. They talk about their '98 tour, including the recording of this record, plus they get into fond remembrances of Tony Bailey, racing Stereolab to the record store, and even what they're up to now: Just a few days before this recording, Cassie Berman participated in a tribute to David Berman on the anniversary of his untimely passing, and Furnish has been working on some cool-sounding visual art for other bands. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to David Pajo, Cassie Berman, and Tim Furnish for chatting. For the 25th anniversary of the first Bonnie “Prince” Billy album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Will Oldham grew up studying acting but decided to pursue music while he was attending Brown University. In 1992, he released his first single with Drag City under the name Palace Brothers. A series of albums followed under several variations of the Palace name, which reflected Oldham's unique approach to treating the album, rather than the artist, as the primary entity. In 1998, he had an epiphany that he could inhabit a new character named Bonnie “Prince” Billy for his music moving forward and put his concerns about an artist identity to rest. He began living in his father's farmhouse in Shelbyville, Kentucky along with his brother, Paul, who had been studying recording and set up a makeshift studio. In this isolated environment, Oldham worked on writing songs and had the freedom to record himself in a way that he never had before. Eventually, Oldham invited other musicians including Peter Townsend, Bob Arellano, Colin Gagon and David Pajo to flesh out the songs that would make up the I SEE A DARKNESS record. In this episode, Will Oldham describes a newfound approach to making music at this time and how he viewed his former Palace work as his apprenticeship years. As Bonnie “Prince” Billy, he found that he could portray a larger than life character who had the power to sing songs across the emotional spectrum. The Bonnie character opened up his approach to songwriting as he began to incorporate some traditional elements like bridges and dramatic builds. From a growing confidence in his singing to a deteriorating relationship and the decision to form a sub label to a love of post-apocalyptic landscapes to adding humor as a release valve to taking inspiration from contemporaries like PJ Harvey to the unlikely events that led to Johnny Cash covering the title track, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
Sharon Tate's life, work, and death has had an outsized impact on American culture. Victims rights, parole procedures, and victim blaming as a women hating phenomenon are all part of her story. It is an important one for women who either have been a victim or will become a victim of a violent crime in her lifetime. Unfortunately that comprises a rather large swath of the female population. Her death was largely blamed on her, and by extensions the other victims present at her home on Cielo Dr. I do not talk about the details of the crime but instead discover what about her was magic, why its so touching, and how we can remember and honor her. The primary film I discuss is the 1967 film Valley Of The Dolls. Her full acting credits are listed below. I also discuss her wedding dress, the recent auction of that dress and Leslie Van Houten's many parole approvals. I go into why she hasn't been let out and the political consequences of setting her free. As of today it looks like she will finally have that chance. sources for this week's show include: Recollections- by Debra Tate, Karina Longworth's work on the Manson family and Sharon Tate, Helter Skelter- by Vincent Bugliosi, and nearly every Photoplay that ever mentioned Sharon, including the October 1969 article mentioned by name in the episode. Our 9-hour interview with indie rock legend David Pajo covers every single aspect of his career—his influences, Slint, Tortoise, and his consistently amazing solo career, typically released under the moniker Papa M. In Part 1, “Favorites, Firsts, & Flavorings,” Pajo talks with Discograffiti about his favorite albums of all time, his pre-Slint metal outfits, and the myriad post-Slint bands in which he's played where the members are on the lookout for that indefinable Pajo flavor. We'll learn about what it was about the early Louisville punk scene that made David feel like he finally belonged, the totally uncool band he admits was his first-ever concert, and why he feels a deep-seated need to leave bands. Douglas Andrew McCombs discusses his lovely and fascinating first solo album, VMAK
When the Smashing Pumpkins broke up in 2000, the talented, tortured genius of Billy Corgan was on display again in Zwan, a band with the Pumpkins' monster drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, future Pixies bassist/vocalist Paz Lenchantin, and dual guitarist Matt Sweeney and David Pajo. It's a pity it didn't work out. This is an edited version. The version on Spotify and Anchor has more music. Links for this episode are at mostlymodernmedia.com
Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite, Slowdive's Rachel Goswell, Slint's David Pajo, and Beth Jeans Houghton - aka Du Blonde - discuss how much they care about their live shows sounding like the record, and that awkward moment when you forget the words to your own song live on stage. Stuart Braithwaite is a guitarist, songwriter and vocalist in Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, who have released 10 studio albums since forming in 1995. Their most recent record, As the Love Continues, went to number one in the UK earlier this year, and marks 25 years since their debut single. Stuart's guests include friend and collaborator Rachel Goswell, best known as the vocalist and guitarist in shoegaze band Slowdive. She's also a member of the Soft Cavalry and supergroup the Minor Victories, alongside Stuart. Also joining them is David Pajo, famed for his guitar shredding in US post-rock band Slint. He's also collaborated with the likes of Interpol, Stereolab, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And Beth Jeans Houghton is a London-based artist who makes music under the moniker Du Blonde. Her latest record, Homecoming, came out earlier this year. She's also directed music videos for the likes of Ezra Furman, LUMP, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
David Pajo of Slint (and countless other music projects) joins us this week to talk about what it's like to have a single transient moment of his youth - Slint's 1991 record Spiderland - crystallize in its own mythology into something that still resonates with new listeners decades later. We also talk COVID-fatigue, Marilyn Manson and Armie Hammer, and going cold-turkey during quarantine. Finally, we introduce Dave to the world of Nightcore by playing him a remix of Slint's song, "Washer." Follow Dave on Instagram, and listen to Slint's discography on Bandcamp! On this episode of the Apology podcast the musician David Pajo (Papa M, Slint, lots more) talks with Apology's Jesse Pearson about the eastern spirituality of his punk-rock youth, his recent interest in the stoic philosopher Seneca, and his perseverance through some very trying times.
This week is the first half of my conversation with Conan Neutron! Conan is a guitar player and singer from Modesto, CA, now living in Milwaukee! He was in the great band Replicator and went on to be in Mt Vicious and the band Victory and Associates. Now he works with a rotating cast of brilliant musicians as Conant Neutron and the Secret Friends! He's played with Dale Crover and David Pajo! And more! In part one we talk about growing up in the Central Valley of California, the wild days of pre-techboom San Francisco and Oakland, and we talk about the loss of his best friend. You can hear his music on his website here: https://www.neutronfriends.com/
For Episode 65 I finally got to talk to David Pajo. David was, of course, the incredibly influential guitar player in the band Slint,. David later went on to play with Will Oldham, The For Carnation, Tortoise, Stereolab, Royal Trux, King Kong, Bush League, Zwan, Peggy Honeywell, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and, most recently, Interpol. Despite his incredibly prolific musical career, he still struggled with depression. In the winter of 2015, he attempted to take his own life. As a survivor he has made it his mission to talk frankly and openly about his depression and how grateful he is that he survived. I am so happy that we had this conversation. We talked about how Slint's record 'Spiderland' absolutely spun out a generation of indie rock nerds like me, about our mutual friend Lance Bangs, about his life since his suicide attempt, and about espresso for maybe longer than anyone could possible care about.

We listen to the landmark album from Slint, Spiderland. What band wasn't influenced by this record and band? More importantly how does this sound now and what exactly made it so groundbreaking? How many bands sprung out of the members of Slint and have you seen the documentary "Breadcrumb Trail?". Jon and Jason explore the outer limits of the “the Billy Corgan songbook” this week, as they talk about a Zwan song written by David Pajo and Matt Sweeney. They also discuss one of their favorite tracks on Adore, a Zeitgeist bonus track, the My Bloody Valentine-inspired song “Daydream,” and more. But first: they kick things off with a brief chat about “Author: The J.T. LeRoy Story,” a documentary that Billy plays a pivotal role in. Don’t be afraid, it’s just the Corganator.

David Pajo of Slint on Arvo Part's "Spiegel Im Spiegel."
My guest this week is Chris Freeland, the man behind Baltimore’s Beat Babies studio. He’s been a member of Oxes, Frenemies, International Soundscape Internationale and (my early group) Wounds. He’s been a cool older brother figure to me since I was in sixth grade, and he’s produced a lot of my early Height tracks. He talks about his early days playing in garage bands, and the other 90’s DIY Baltimore bands that inspired him. We talk about the rapid rise of his band Oxes, and his travels with Will Oldham, Cass McCombs and David Pajo. He told me how he’s lost the burning desire to be noticed, and how he’s reimagined himself as a behind-the-scenes studio man. This episode was recorded at the Lineup Room. Mike Riley’s art this week is an homage to The Geto Boy’s “We Can’t Be Stopped.” Once again, we're being hosted by Splicetoday.com.
