Desktop computers are smaller than they used to be. Tower boxes are shorter, but if you really want to save space, consider a notebook computer, possibly with a dock. Notebook systems cost more and desktop systems still have certain advantages, but the trend it toward smaller devices. In Short Circuits: LastPass reported a "security incident" in late August and doomsayers made a lot of noise. As it turned out, the intrusion wasn't a big deal and I'll explain why. • Windows 10 and Windows 11 apps are not installed in the usual Program Files and Program Files (x86) directories. Instead they're in a hidden directory inside the Windows directory. If you want to examine the directory, it can be challenging. Twenty Years Ago (only on the website): In 2002, thinking that the cat or dog could eat your computer was a bit of hyperbole, but today we have watches that are essentially computers. Maybe the cat couldn't eat it, but the dog might.
On today's episode of Restaurant and Retail Marketing Flash Briefing, we look at the recent news that Instagram has enabled posting from desktop computers. It's been a long time coming but for social media managers, this is great news. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Which Mac is the current bestseller? Is Apple giving up on industrial design? Why did you screw Quadra 900 customers by introducing the 950 just five months after the 900? Editor-in-Chief of Macworld Jerry Borrell sits down for some Q&A with Eric Harslem, Apple's Vice President of Desktop Computers in 1992. Simpler times: an Apple VP discussing future product plans and openly admitting mistakes, in this case with the Mac Portable. You don't see Tim Cook apologizing for the butterfly keyboard or the abysmal state of OS X from 2009 onwards, do you? Come back, Eric! Original text from Macworld Magazine, September 1992. Eric in 2012 speaking about his donation to the Mathworks Endowment at Texas State University. Some months after this interview was published, Eric, along Apple's head of PowerBook development, jumped ship to Dell in 1993 to help turn around its notebook division. The Apple New Product Process (ANPP) lives on even though Jonathan Ive did his best to prioritize thinness and visual aesthetics over structural integrity, keyboard durability, and battery life.

Will desktop computers survive as they are? With the advent of tablets and powerful smartphones, the classic desktop computer has seen losses in sales for many years now. Laptops have continued to scale in performance while also slimming down, especially with the recent Nvidia GTX 1000 series GPUs (1080, 1070, 1060). Our preference is that desktops survive and thrive, but there are many challenges moving forward. We go into detail about reasons that they will stick around, but also reasons they could be replaced. The basic idea is that advanced users will probably always want levels of performance that requires a large desktop sized footprint, but things could change. Join us for the discussion!
