IWP Ep44 Kate Field - Eccentric In Her Genius. Today we'll be talking about Kate Field. She was an author, playwright, actress and more. Her involvement in the wine industry was brief but she's worth knowing about, wine connection or not. She helped in the fight to hold off prohibition. Prohibition wasn't an overnight change, it was threatened for years and decades even. Counties and cities going dry, Saloon taxes enacted, bars shuttered, taxation laws around wines changed and when prohibition finally did happen, over 40 years or so had gone by. It was the Wets vs the Drys. Follow the podcast at www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. Lots of women fought to make America dry. They stood at the forefront of the temperance movement, campaigning to get rid of alcohol. They were a big reason why Prohibition became a Constitutional Amendment. They fought for it in speeches and marches and helped police it as law enforcement agents. What was it about the cause that called to so many women? What made them hitch their wagon to this monumental task? NIGHTBIRDS is available now wherever good books (or audiobooks) are sold! “Prohibition”, the 2011 documentary miniseries, gives a pretty extensive look at America's experiment with the prohibition of alcohol, and James Keys and Tunde Ogunlana discuss what stood out most in this Ken Burns and Lynn Novick documentary as well as the lessons we can and should take away from America's failed prohibition experiment.Prohibition: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick (PBS)Prohibition: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick (Amazon Prime Video)

What's up, Pkarlgh? (Never mind, I can't hear your answer anyway...) The Peaches starts this podcast off with some insipid stupidity which is not customary for her. After some banal conversation about paint drying, we transition into a discussion about my transition. Apparently, I'm too old to keep being funny and I'm obligated to "pass the torch" to some younger people. I think that's the message anyway, give and listen and let me know if that's how you understand it...

In 1928 Saint Paul, Minnesota, my great uncle Frank Rothbauer ran afoul of the "Drys", the Federal enforcers of the Volstead Act prohibiting the sale of alcohol. His death, at their hands, made the front page of the St. Paul Daily News for several days running before disappearing into the classifieds.
When the 18th Amendment was enacted in 1919, the fifth-largest industry in the United States became illegal. While many parts of the country (including, famously, many north-of-Chicago suburbs) were already legally “Dry,” Prohibition changed the political and moral landscape of the nation, introducing intrusive federal law enforcement, a new kind of organized crime, and the “scofflaw.” In this talk, Bill Savage will discuss how the politics of Temperance, and the battle between Wets and Drys, exposes rifts in American identity (and American food-and-drink culture) that still resonate today. Using George Ade’s The Old-Time Saloon as a guide, he will explore Prohibition historian Daniel Okrent’s not-so-rhetorical question: “How the Hell Did that Happen?” Bill Savage teaches American literature at Northwestern University and the Newberry Library of Chicago, with special emphasis on Chicago writers and the dynamics of urban spaces, including saloons then and now. He edited and annotated Ade’s The Old-Time Saloon (University of Chicago Press, 2016) and Chicago By Day and Night: a Pleasure Seeker’s Guide to the Paris of America (with Paul Durica, Northwestern University Press, 2013), a guide to night life during the 1893 World’s Fair. Books will be for sale, cash or check. This program is hosted by the Chicago Foodways Roundtable with the Highland Park Historical Society and Highwood Historical Society. Recorded at Santi's Garden on September 20, 2018.
After a stinging defeat nationally, how are Democrats in Colorado gearing up for 2018? We'll speak to state party chair Morgan Carroll about the crowded race for governor, and a change that means 1.2 million unaffiliated voters can take part in next June's primary election. (Tomorrow we'll talk to Republican state chair Jeff Hays.) Then, a major water source for the food supply in Colorado is drying up. In fact, the Ogallala Aquifer supports a sixth of the world's grain, and countless farmers' livelihoods. Plus, a Colorado mountain climber teaches Afghan women to summit their country's tallest peaks.

Alex (@AT09_Trader) is a 22-year old, discretionary day trader, who’s seen great results in the few years he’s been grinding away at this. He trades small caps, and he trades aggressively—as you’ll soon hear, Alex is far from conservative. This conversation was recorded on the 16th of November (2016), right around the time when the madness in the shipping sector was unfolding. So we got talking about the ticker DRYS and how Alex racked up a $40k loss a day or two before our interview (although, he had his first +$100k day shortly after too). Also we spoke about how Alex got started, the types of trade scenarios that he looks for, areas that he’s working on to improve, and also his venture into real estate—where he flipped a foreclosure property for a tidy profit, plus much more. Note: Nothing you hear on this podcast is financial advice. You’re entirely responsible for your own trading decisions.
