IWP Ep79 Tony Coturri and Noel Diaz - A conversation. Today's episode is a little different.  A conversation between Noel Diaz of Purity Wine, the Study wine bar and the Richmond Wine Collective, he was also my very first interview for the podcast, way back on episode 2 and Tony Coturri of the Coturri winery, who has been making natural wines longer than anyone in California. Noel came up with the idea and Tony was up for it! They discuss what has changed over the last 50 years in California Natural wine, some of the struggles and the surprising bright spots, there's lots of talk about farming and how wine fits in with the rest of our food.  We had a great time sneaking the recording in while By The Way was getting started. Today were hearing from Alejandro of Châteauneuf du Fargosonini.  We discuss his really exciting and cool new project focussed on wines from the vineyard he lives on as well upcycling other fruits that would otherwise go to waste.  Alejandro was working his way around the Bay Area to taste different shops on the wines when he stopped by.  I think you'll get a good idea of the wines and project and thought process behind both.  Some wines are made from Grenache but also plum, citrus, apricot and other fruits. Others are intentionally oxidized or cooked in the central valley sun. All the wines are super unique and could create really interesting pairing opportunities. IWP Ep76 George and John Jarvis - Vine Hill Santa Cruz Pioneer Winegrowers Today we're talking about George and John Jarvis.  Pioneer winegrowers in the Vine Hill area of the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Their story is a good one and because we haven't been in the Santa Cruz Mountains much for the historical episodes, there is some background info and other fun details, like 2 Charlies, the 3rd town in California and fires.  One thing about the Jarvis's is that real exact details are lacking a little.  There is more conflicting info about them than most of our subjects.  None of it is make or break stuff, it's a year here, some acreage there, a couple thousand gallons more or less.  Some of the archives of Santa Cruz County have been affected by fires and floods over the last 150 years.  Because they were early on in the Santa cruz Mountains, they speculated on land a lot, so they would buy and sell and have some repossessed before buying a portion back, things like that.  I tried to straighten it out the best I could.  It doesn't affect the story at all.Follow the podcast at www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. We talk about their upbringing and Greek heritage, their Stampede and Cherry house vineyards, why they started producing their own wines and the Assyrtiko plantings they farm.  We recorded this episode at the Lodi Wine Commission offices and the Lodi Visitors Center.  It's a great place to try and to purchase wines from Perlegos and other small Lodi producers that might not have a public tasting room. Today we'll look at the “Wine War” where a conglomerate of winegrowers would battle against the CWA for control of the California wine industry.  They were called the California Wine Makers Corporation, I might refer to them also as “The Corporation” or the CWMC.  This one is deep dive into the politics of the late 1800's wines business. IWP Ep48 Matthew Keller - Don Mateo Matthew Keller or Don Mateo as he was sometimes known, was one of the pioneering winegrowers of Los Angeles, moving there when it was still barely more than a dusty pueblo.  He wasn't the first but was among them, we'll get to his contemporaries in time.  We're going to hear a lot of quotes in the episode today, because Keller was a very prolific writer.  The quality and quantity of his wine writing is matched by only a couple other winemakers in Pre-Prohibition California.  His search for knowledge and his language skills made him a centerpiece of Los Angeles area winegrowing in the 1850's to 1880's.  Follow the podcast at www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. IWP Ep40 The 2 Natoma Vineyards with Kevin Knauss - The American River, Bugbey and Gold.  Today we're discussing the 2 Natoma vineyards, they were close to each other in both time and distance, enough so that they have fooled wine historians much smarter than myself.  They fooled me too.  I have Kevin Knauss helping me today, he was the one to set me straight, he's spent years as a historian studying the American River and Sacramento area and has written about Bugbey and his Natoma vineyard, AP Catlin, Folsom Lake, the American River and more.  Our story today starts in the time and place of the California Gold Rush and concludes with it too.  Although neither vineyard is well known today, they both had their time in the sun.  They were run by real men of the age, with all that entails. We'll hear about the first raisins made in California, one of the largest vineyards in the state, huge infrastructure projects and the demise of both vineyards in the worst ways. We also get a return of Hilgard and the University Experiment Stations, finding what grapes will grow best in California. If you want to learn more about those, check out episodes 24 and 26 after. We'll talk about Benjamin Bugbey first, Kevin gives great descriptions about what people in general and winemakers or vineyardists were going through at the time, trying to find their way in this new land.  Kevin also provides much useful information on the ways farmers at the time would learn of new technologies and techniques and how the sharing of information happened. I imagine in this way Bugbey could serve as a stand in for many of the very early California vineyardists and winemakers. We then get to the other Natoma vineyard and we see the good and bad of when big business combines with vineyards.  You can follow Kevins writings at www.insuremekevin.com and instagram.com/insuremekevin Kevins books are available at:https://www.amazon.com/stores/Kevin-Knauss/author/B01J6787DY?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true Follow the podcast at www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. IWP Ep32 Ryan Stirm - Stirm Wine Co. I recently spoke with Ryan Stirm of Stirm Wine Company in Watsonville. Since his first vintage about 10 years ago, Ryan has become really well known for his multiple Rieslings from the central coast and working with great vineyards like Kick On Ranch and Wirz.  He's also perhaps the foremost producer of Cab Pfeffer, working with the Siletto family vineyards as well as Gimelli vineyard, originally a part of the historic El Gavilan vineyard.  He makes wonderful Zins from Wirz also.  We discuss how he got started and some of his most exciting moments in winemaking.  Ryan is very open and thoughtful when discussing the in and outs and challenges and pleasures of running a small winery and I think you'll really enjoy what he has to say. You can find Ryan's wines at https://www.stirmwine.com and follow him on instagram at http://instagram.com/stirmwineco Follow the podcast www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. IWP Ep31 Julia Ornelas-Higdon - The Grapes of Conquest

IWP Ep31 Julia Ornelas-Higdon - The Grapes of Conquest I recently spoke with author Julia-Ornelas-Higdon about her book The Grapes of Conquest - Race, Labor, and the Industrialization of California Wine, 1769–1920. Julia is an associate professor at Cal State University Chanel Islands and this is fascinating book if you're interested in the history of California and California Wine especially Pre-Prohibition.  It looks at this history from a different perspective than what we normally hear about and is hidden from most of the glossy histories.  We learn more about the plight of the Native American Indians, Mexican and Chinese workers that made the early wine industry possible. The large German and French vineyards of southern California and the professionalization of the industry are covered as well. This book takes a real academic but readable approach and what I especially enjoyed is that it concentrates more on the early Southern California wine history, which we don't hear as much as much about. We've discussed some of this in episodes 24 and 26 on professor Eugene Hilgard and University of California Experiment Stations and more so in Episode 28 on Mission San Jose wine history. There are some other upcoming episodes that explore related themes. Follow the podcast www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback.
