Harriet and Producer Martin moderate a debate between Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Leader of the Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer, probing them on the key issues in this election, such as Diane Abbott, and whether they'd start a nuclear war. We also have comedian and resident diversity correspondent Eshaan Akbar on hand to lighten the mood with some 'lighter' questions that might show us the fun side of the candidates and also pop off on socials like The News Agents clips do. We have a live show coming up on Thursday the 20th June at the Museum of Comedy, we would love to see you there: tickets. There'll be Lee Anderson, Penny Mordaunt, and MP Rosie Holt will be signing copies of her new book, which is published that day. Thanks to HN who signed up to support us at patreon.com/NonCensored this week. If you would like to support the show too, you'll get the full interviews in video, a monthly bonus "time for questions" podcast, and a weekly behind-the-scenes podcast except not this week because we've done things a bit differently. You can also keep your questions coming to the team by emailing noncensoredpodcast@gmail.com. And we'll refund a month's subscription for any Patreon who buys a ticket to the live show! Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/2022/04/14/episode-41-ed-morris/Podcast 41 features one of the industry's greatest talents - Ed Morris.Ed has flexed his creative muscles across just about every discipline you can think of.Art direction, writing, typography, creative direction, photography, commercials direction and most recently turning his hand to film, directing his brilliant debut movie ‘How to stop a recurring dream'.There's no end to his talent. He even plays the ukulele. But thankfully he can't do the Rubik's cube ;-)We spent a wonderful hour hearing how these talents have helped shape his billboards, which have won at every major award show. And every one of them is a cracker. From the beautifully judged b&w portraits for Tfl to the utterly joyful Red Stripe, the iconic Kew Gardens 96 sheet, the graphic Sta Prest and our favourite - Quality Street - which in Ed's own words are ‘like stills from a film'.Every campaign has utter simplicity at its heart, executed with fantastic craft. And when Ed is the client the standard doesn't drop - the poster for his movie is a belter - courtesy of another BtB guest Paul Belford (Episode 2).Ed epitomises what creativity is all about. Passionate. Restless. Honest. Hard working. Collaborative. Always with a point of view. And always with a ton of energy. Thanks for coming on Ed. We loved it.
I sat down with Ed Morris and Mark Nethery, two gentlemen who have held office with The League of Kentucky Sportsmen. The League has been around since 1935 and advocating for the sportsmen and women in the fine state of Kentucky. Walking the halls of the state legislature with one goal, regardless of the subset in the outdoors to fight, weigh in, show our power as a voting block and insure that decisions are based in sound management. Susannah Sayler and Ed Morris have been working at the intersection of art and climate activism for the last fifteen years. They are co-founders of the Canary Project, started in 2006 and inspired by a series of articles that Elizabeth Kolbert published in The New Yorker that eventually became her book Field Notes from a Catastrophe. Adapting Kolbert's investigative strategy, Ed and Susannah initially set out to photograph places around the world being impacted by climate change - in order to call out a warning, as the name Canary Project suggests. (Though the photographs themselves or the installations that ensued were subsequently renamed History of the Future.) Since then, Susannah and Ed have worked on numerous projects, from Green Patriot Posters to the more recent Toolshed, and helped coordinate works of fellow artists tackling climate change. They also both teach in the Dept. of Film and Media Arts at Syracuse University. As a former student of the arts (more the literary kind than the visual kind, but who's quibbling), I was curious about the ability of art to engage in climate activism. What can the artist achieve that the scientist and the journalist cannot, I wondered? And, conversely, what are art's limitations? To see the photos and other images we discuss, go to in-the-weeds.netTo check out Susannah and Ed's latests project go to https://tool-shed.org
This episode is a follow up to episode 264 Divide and Conquer, with Jim Huntsman and Joe Giglia. We recieved an email from listener Ed Morris out of Kentucky. The email had some great talking points and what I would consider a template of action more of us need to follow, organize and promote, a group called the League of Ky Sportsmen, founded in 1935 by concerned sportsmen (www.kentuckysportsmen.com . When the three of us get to talking there is plenty of rabbit holes, nonetheless we felt addressing this on air was the best way to serve the efforts in Kentucky and our passion. Enjoy the episode! Oak Barrels: The Winemaker’s Spice Rack, featuring Joe Freeman and Ed Morris from The Rubin Family of Wines. Ed Morris, associate winemaker for Rubin, has a background in coopering. (“Coopering”, or barrel making, comes from the Middle Dutch/Middle Low German term kūpe for tub or vat, based on the Latin word cupa.) Before going to work for Rubin in 2010, Morris was a cooper in Sonoma County. “Looking back on it, it was a long time in the making,” he reflects. “I’m a fourth generation craftsman. My great-grandfather was a violin builder, my grandfather was a clock maker, and my father was a carpenter and boat builder. So when I happened to get a job at a local cooperage, it was almost fated. So within the first week, I kind of felt at home and was completely infatuated with what was happening around me.” Morris keeps a collection of old coopering tools that he occasionally shows to visitors of the winery who ask about repair and maintenance of the barrels. Whether soldiers are on the battlefield or providing humanitarian relief effort, they need to capture and process a wide range of text, image, and map-based information. To support soldiers in this effort, the Department of Defense is beginning to equip soldiers with smartphones to allow them to manage that vast array and amount of information they encounter while in the field. Whether the information gets correctly conveyed up the chain of command depends, in part, on the soldier's ability to capture accurate data while in the field. In this episode, Ed Morris describes research to create a software application for smartphones that allows soldier end-users to program their smartphones to provide an interface tailored to the information they need for a specific mission.
