We continue our occasional series talking to Cold War undersea warriors with the first installment of a two-episode dive into the submarine career of Commander Rob Forsyth. Entering the Royal Navy in the 1950s, after a brief excursion into the surface fleet, Rob found himself aboard the submarine HMS Auriga, undertaking a patrol during the Cuban Missile Crisis of late 1962. With Warships Pod host Iain Ballantyne, Rob also discusses a submerged transatlantic transit in the same diesel-electric boat, which turned out not to be the record-breaking voyage everybody hoped for (due to a messy technical difficulty). After succeeding on the notorious Perisher- the Royal Navy's very demanding submarine command course - we learn how Rob in the early 1970s took command of the famous HMS Alliance. The Alliance is today preserved at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire. Aside from learning how HMS Alliance battled stormy seas on patrol in the Bay of Biscay, in this podcast episode we also hear how a rather smelly jumper received a burial at sea. The chat then moves into the nuclear submarine world, with Rob as second-in-command of the Polaris ballistic missile boat HMS Repulse, one of the UK's strategic deterrent vessels. In the next episode Rob tells us about how Repulse was forced to conduct a ‘crash dive' by a rather persistent Soviet spy vessel; the Perisher from the perspective of running the course; being CO of the hunter-killer submarine HMS Sceptre while pursuing a Russian aircraft carrier across the Mediterranean. • Follow Rob Forsyth on Twitter @RStanleyForsyth • Iain Ballantyne is the Editor of WARSHIPS International Fleet Review magazine. Mike is “a northerner” raised in Manchester, he holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Portsmouth. He has a great affinity with the area, due to his time in the Royal Navy during which he was based in Portsmouth. It was Mike's affinity with the area and his Naval history that led to him with Andy Burdon investing in the area. They painstakingly invested several years and significant amounts of the own personal wealth into turning a historic gunpowder magazine building in nearby Gosport into an award-winning operational brewery and social event space which they co-founded together called the “Powder Monkey Brewing Co”. Mike has travelled the world and is a serial entrepreneur, businessman and professional investor, retirement just does not suit this Northern fighter. He is currently involved in several private / unlisted companies and invested personally in several listed companies and entities globally. In this Investing Matters interview, Mike provides an overview of his business and leadership journey to achieving his financial freedom at a young age, why retirement did not suit him. What leadership qualities he looks for in companies he backs or invests in, the importance of employing the best people, inclusion, Corporate Social Responsibility, ESG, paying it forward via Charities and local initiatives. His greatest investment successes, his greatest investment mistakes and lessons learnt. The stocks and shares listed in the UK and globally that he views have long-term winning potential and much more. We hope you enjoy this podcast, and we look forward to hearing your feedback. Graham Maby was born on September 1, 1952 and grew up in the small English south coast town of Gosport, near Portsmouth. His musical “awakening” happened at age ten when he heard the Beatles' first single “Love Me Do” on the radio. Six years later he taught himself to play guitar, then bass. His association with British musician Joe Jackson began in 1973 when they became members of a local Portsmouth cover band. Five years later Jackson's solo recording career took off, with Graham's bass playing front and center on albums like Look Sharp! and I'm the Man. Jackson's biggest-selling album came in 1982, with the million-selling Night and Day. The success of the album firmly established Jackson as an artist and Maby's reputation as a versatile bass player. Since 1983, Graham has lived in the USA. During that time, as well as working on numerous albums and tours with Jackson, he has recorded and performed live with many different artists, among them: Marshall Crenshaw, Natalie Merchant, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Ian Hunter, Freedy Johnston, They Might Be Giants, Henry Lee Summer, the Silos, Graham Parker, Darden Smith, Dar Williams, Garland Jeffreys, Joy Askew, and Regina Spektor. Graham co-produced Freedy Johnston's breakthrough album Can You Fly in 1992, and has had small roles in two major movies, Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and The Joker (2019). He has two children, Claire and Pierce, and now lives with his third wife, Maureen, on Long Island. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support

On today's episode of the Resistance Library Podcast Dave and Sam talk about Eugene Stoner.    Eugene Morrison Stoner, the father of the AR-15 and the M16, is a titan in the world of both military- and civilian-use firearms. If he had done nothing but design the AR-15, his name would go down in history. But, of course, he did so much more than that. In addition to changing the landscape of American firearms, as well as the world stage, Stoner was also the archetypal “self-made American man,” working his way up from nothing on a high school education to forever change the world as we know it.   Born in Gosport, IN, in 1922, Stoner attended high school in Long Beach, CA, before working at the Vega Aircraft Company installing armament. Once World War II started, he enrolled in the United States Marine Corps, specializing in Aviation Ordnance. He served in Northern China and the South Pacific.   In 1945, at the war's end, Stoner went to work in a machine shop owned by Whitaker, eventually working his way up to design engineer. In 1954, he went to work as the chief engineer for ArmaLite, then a division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation. His first projects were forerunners of the AR-15, with creative names like AR-3, AR-9, AR-11 and AR-12. These were all prototype small arms that never saw production. He did, however, see success with the AR-5, which was used as a survival rifle by the United States Air Force.   In 1955, Stoner completed the initial run of design on the ArmaLite AR-10. This was a revolution in the world of small arms – a weapon that boasted a compact size, was easy to fire and didn't weigh too much. The AR-10 was chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO, and was first tested at the U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1956. It beat the competition largely due to its comparatively compact size. Still, the weapon was originally rejected in favor of the T44, which became the M14, mostly because of its late arrival in the testing cycle. Dutch company Artillerie Inrichtingen manufactured the AR-10 under lease until 1960. But this didn't mean the AR-10 was anywhere near done.   You can read the full article “Eugene Stoner: The Forgotten History of the Man Who Created "America's Rifle" – the AR-15” at Ammo.com.   For $20 off your $200 purchase, go to https://ammo.com/podcast (a special deal for our listeners).   Follow Sam Jacobs on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SamJacobs45   And check out our sponsor, Libertas Bella, for all of your favorite 2nd Amendment shirts at LibertasBella.com.   Helpful Links:  Eugene Stoner: The Forgotten History of the Man Who Created "America's Rifle" – the AR-15 History of 223 Ammo Resistance Library  Sam Jacobs
